Testing... one, two...testing...Finally! We’re on! Welcome to the very first edition of DurbanZone. We're officially making our debut in hard copy. The title really does not need much introduction if you've had your finger on the pulse and you've been streaming the hottest hit radio station in KZN (MegaZone Hit Radio), or if you've been keeping up with our online chronicles. If you haven't, then let me to bring you up to speed. Durban's new kid on the block, ZoneMags SA, has embarked on a mega-mission to bring to you the latest happenings in the brightly lit city of Durban, via online platforms, on radio and now in print. And this is it. This, Durban, is your very own magazine; a reflection of your kaleidoscopic lifestyle, honing in on that uniqueness that makes us the beautiful metropolis that we are.Our November edition has been inspired purely by the city itself, with its intricately woven streets, characterised by the massive weathered buildings in the CBD, boasting the architectural influence of our dramatic history. It is against this alluring scenery, that the spice of Durban life plays itself out. And it is this very unfolding that sets the tone for our in-depth content that gives new visitors to our region, (and those locals who haven't ventured out there for a while) a fresh look into the dynamism that is our Durban. In this edition, we trace our city’s steps from early traditional FM radio to the future of streaming and how MegaZone Hit Radio hopes to launch music-lovers unto this new platform. We also sample the different hangout joints, tasting specifically for that special eKasi zing, and our local style-gurus, Mark and Clint, give us a run-down on do’s and don’ts for a night out on the town. We then hit our neon-lit casino to bore witness to the resurrection of the ‘terrible lizard’ and experience the true heart of the creativity behind the Makotikoti Arts Project and delve into the depths of locally brewed beer kegs, opening the tap on this new hobby that seems to be growing in its popularity. We’ve given you the perfect backdrop for that rousing adventure. Now take it with both hands.

Introducing Samantha Brill. Sam is a 'creative' through and through with a love for all things South African and trendy; her forte being contemporary culture. Through her travels across the country, her 'voice' is inspired by her cultural experiences, ensuring that she covers extensively the 'good stuff'- bound to cure curiosity and open minds alike. Her energetic bouncy personality is fuelled by her love for music and entertainment. Sam …is a journalist for DurbanZone and radio host for MegaZone Hit Radio. A quote she lives by: “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”- Maya Angelou From magenta, to cyan, to yellow and black, artsy genius, Tevin Naidoo affords the DurbanZone title its colouristic personality, taking every blank canvas before him and splashing on the churned-out words and images, arranging it all into the perfect picturesque document for its readers. Layout has long been Tevin’ s strongest talent and heading the title’s creative team is something he can do in his sleep. A quote that Tevin draws much of inspiration from, is from Fernand Leger that goes something along the lines of: "Man needs colour to live; it's just as necessary an element as fire and water.”

Debbie Perumal is DurbanZone’s chatty, vibrant and fun-loving journo-chic that is always up for a challenge, especially when it comes to translating the beauties of life into the written word. Debbie sees the world from the unconventional angle and believes that laughter is the best medicine and that hugs should be given in high doses because to her, that is the only way one can unleash the colours of the rainbow they are. Writing has always been her passion in life, it is through words that she portrays her love for it. Debbie lives by a quote from Audrey Hepburn: “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says: “ I’m possible”

Shivan Khemraz is DurbanZone’s spunky Sales Representative. He might be the youngest on the team, but Shivan’s marketing skills are rather sharp and up to scratch. Shiv is a man who is totally dedicated to his job and prides himself on his loyalty to his team. He never gives up, no matter how great the task or challenge before him might be, and strives to ensure he gets the best deal for his people. A quote by Leo Burnett that inspires him everyday in his line of work is: "The work of an advertising agency is warmly and immediately human. It deals with human needs, wants, dreams and hopes. Its 'product' cannot be turned out on an assembly line." This is Adhir Mungroo. Adhir is DurbanZone’s ever talented lensman. Together with his business partner, Sahil, Adhir puts the face to the text for the magazine, affording it the raw-resources for the visual aspect. Adhir is all about capturing the perfect image from exactly the right angle, and is pretty flexible when it comes to manoeuvring his camera to where it needs to be, for just the right shot. Adhir is inspired by a quote from Aaron Siskind: “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”




Meet Movember’s mow-master by Debbie Perumal llow us to introduce Lazlo Venter. Lazlo is more commonly known as Sweeny the Barber. He is perhaps one of the last truly authentic barbers in Durban, who prides himself in the art of sprucing in the traditional sense of beard-grooming. Based on Meridian Drive, he operates from a simplistic shop that boasts a nostalgic 1800s feel, characterised by antique razors and hairdryers, representing the years of hairstyling experience passed on from generation to generation in his family, including his grandfather, his father and his mother.Scores of men from as far as the south coast wander into his joint for the customary experience of a snip, shave and beard-shampoo, blindly and whole-heartedly trusting Sweeney the Barber with the aesthetics of their physical appearance. If they entered Sweeney’s shop feeling quite caveman-like, they certainly leave in perfect-gentleman mode. “South Africa lost its barbering culture in the 70’s but when the beard trend came out, there seemed to be a need for the art of barbering again. I had to learn fast,” Sweeney told DurbanZone. Sweeney explained how he embarked on a mission to master the art of cutting, trimming and mowing from old books and from how-to Youtube videos. Sweeney has taken his art to the next level, by now also formulating, mixing and bottling his own shaving cream line, beard oils and beard shampoos. Over the years, Sweeney has got the art of beard-grooming down to a science. He is serious about his skill.Which is why it comes as no surprise that Sweeney has assembled himself behind the Movember campaign in full force.

African in men over the age of 50.The prostate is a gland that is a part of the male reproductive system that wraps around the male urethra near the bladder.Testicular cancer is the Cancer of the testicles and that usually affects younger men between the ages of 15 and 49. The most common symptom is a painless lump or swelling in the testicles. Statistics show that around the world, a man dies every minute from suicide due to their mental health deteriorating and physical inactivity being the fourth leading risk factor for death in men. Because these issues were previously pushed under the mat, and not talked about in the open (for fear of being seen as less manly), the Movember Foundation sets out to kill those stigmas and bring these topics to the fore. Sweeney explained that he too felt strongly about these issues and wanted to do his bit to help the cause. He has therefore embarked on mission to encourage his clientele to join the movement.By encouraging them to go to the movember site, www.movember.co.za and join the ‘Sweeney the Barber & Co’ group. They can thereby make a donation of any amount to the cause and print out their receipt. Upon producing the printout on the next visit to the barbershop, Sweeney gives them R50 off their haircut or grooming regime. “At the end of the day, it’s a cause that I believe all men should get behind. We share a camaraderie that can easily be used as a platform for a greater good. If this is one way we can do it, then let’s do it,”. He has therefore embarked to join the movement by visiting the Movember site.

The Movember Foundation, is a movement committed to promoting healthy living for men. Its aim at rasing awareness on the different illnesses that are common to men and encourage them to pursue healthier lifestyles. It specifically focuses on prostate and testicular cancer as well as men’s mental health and physical inactivity. For the month of November, men of all ages from all races groups stand together in the solidarity with the Movember foundation. According to the official Movember site, the movement encourages men to shape their own experience by making a commitment to their health. The site went on to say that the commitment is that the Mo Bros (as the campaign affectionately calls them) should sport a beard from November 1 till the end of the month, whichever moustache style chosen be it the Wisp, Rockstar, Undercover Brothers, the Business Men or the After Eight. They are encoruaged to shave it, groom it and keep it classy for 30 days. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in South

Treatments offered include hair removal, facial rejuvenation, acne scarring, small veins, hyper pigmentation, stretch marks, wrinkles, and solutions for sweaty heels and palms. They also offer consultations for general dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, mole mapping, skin cancer treatment (PDT), dermatological surgery, ultra violet therapy, botox or fillers. The clinic stocks its own range of skincare products. DurbanZone journos therefore embarked on a mission to uncover the best hang-out joints in the city, where the average Joe can just kick it back, have a few drinks with friends, relax after work and over the weekend, or just have a bit of good old fashion fun. This was the final shortlist.

#1 Factory café Set in an old factory, with working machinery, and home to Colombo coffee,this coffee shop exudes passion and a true love of good coffee. Factory Café is a simple, enigmatic coffee shop in a coffee factory setting, staging stand-up comedy, art, folk and rock bands, with an unusual ekasi-like industrial atmosphere, offering caffeine junkies the ultimate sanctuary. One can bore witness to coffee beans being ground and roasted right there and then and brewed into the most perfect cup, with the tempting aroma of such a discipline luring them in. Factory Café on 369 Gale Street (Magwaza Maphalala), Umbilo is a must visit to all Durbanites this lifetime.

#2 Bat Centre

For those artsy counterparts of the human race who like to let their paint drip and their creativity flow, especially those who draw great influence from their ethnic backgrounds, the Bat Centre, an arts and culture community joint, is the hang-out headquarters for them. The centre celebrates the arts and local cultures of Durban, incorporating all elements in its get-up and set-up. Always abuzz with painters, sculptors and performers from all walks of life, the centre makes an awesome chill-out-place for the creative at heart. The Bat Centre is situated at the Small Craft Habour on 45 Maritime place, Victoria Embankment.


#3 Coco’s on Florida Coco’s made the list because it allows its visitors to sip on a tantalizing cocktail, kick it back with a refreshing glass of wine or savour a delicious meal on the balcony that overlooks the hustle and bustle of Durban’s popular lively and upmarket Florida Road. Coco’s epitomizes the very essence of Durban’s fun, unrivalled night life. Sporting a rustic pub look and feel, Coco’s is drenched in eKasi flavor through and through. #4 Cool Runnings A yasso nice! Cool Runnings is definitely a great place to slow the weekend down for a bit and kick back, relax,while just chilling out. Cool Runnings is smack in the middle of CBD on 49 Milne Street Durban but is ironically, a perfect escape from the Durban rush, and has long been known as the ultimate relaxation-zone. Though rather Jamacian in its décor aspects, it does still elude to an eKasi vibe which takes shape from the the strategically placed plants and hot summer atmosphere. Rest assured, inside, the beer is nice and chilled, the pool table flat and the music, jammin’ good.

#5 Winston Pub This one is not for the faint hearted. Enter this graffiti-covered wonderland, and one is immediately greeted by a six-foot fiend painted on the wall. This is no place for one’s Nine Wests. But the chilled-out vibe at the Winston Pub is like no other. Legend has it, that Winston Churchill sat at this very bar and wrote a page or two of his memoirs. Based at 9 Clark road Umbilo, it's nice to know that some places stay the same. A low-lit stage serves as the perfect platform to host big-names and up-and-coming local bands and live music on a regular basis. But best of all, there's pool and tunes, and the staff are as awesome as they look.

#6 Velvet Lounge Set for a king and queen in the heart of Florida Street, with royal style lounge seats, elegant mirrors and stylish frames surrounding the interior, one can club in style at Velvet Lounge. It might give one a slow sensual feel upon entering but at night the local house music is turned up high, drinks all around and the eKasi party’s up.

#7 House of Curries

For awesome South African house music with a touch of spice, this local joint with its shebeen and tavern feel, is a must-visit. Offering a variety of indian foods, this favourite hangout is found in the heart of Florida Road. House of curries is the ideal place to kick it back with friends and is known for serving some of the best curries in Durban: tender lamb curry, spicy bean curry; and mini bunny chows with a difference. It’s comfy and casual, hip and happening and generally serves the best of both worlds.

#8 Comedy Lounge To relax, mingle and laugh, have a snack, get a drink and chill out, Comedy Lounge is the place to be. Business does not need to be done in the office now that the comedy lounge is on the Durban map. Hang out with distinguished people and have fun with the likes of Felix Hlophe, Neville Pillay, Masood Boomgard, Arny Payne, Mondli Mzizi and many more. Comedy Lounge is situated on 150 Avondale Road.

#9 Zulu Jazz Lounge The guys who brought you Society have decided to take back Durban's CBD, bringing the fashionable revellers and music appreciators back downtown. Zulu Jazz Lounge is truly underground, literally under the Playhouse Theatre. In fact, it's the old Playhouse Cellar. The spacious venue has come alive again and is hosting some of the biggest names in SA jazz, including Natalie Rungan, Darius Brubeck and Burtan Naidoo, on 231 Anton Lembede Street. There's plenty space to dance to as well, and the big dance floor in front of the stage doesn't go to waste when international acts like DJ Krush come to town.

#10 Miami Boulevard For a classy take on clubbing with a bit of local zing, a stylish night out at Miami Boulevard is highly advisable. Local DJ’s from all over play in both the downstairs and upstairs dance floors. It doubles up as a restaurant and is situated in the heart of Durban’s hip and happening night life spot on 153 Florida Road. Patrons enjoy the spacious outside bar area with comfy seating, as well as the beautiful VIP area on the deck with own its bar.

HOW TO DO IT njoy the summer city escapades feeling extra beautiful this season.Whether you plan to party the night out at the city’s fancy dens and digs or whether you plan a sundowner at your local lounge, why not make it a beautiful affair? November blockbusters Let's face it: final exams are here and amidst the bustle of realising you haven't cracked open a book since your midterm, there is nothing better than a little distraction of escapism, by going to the movies. So grab a box of popcorn and a large coke and let’s head off to the big screen.

The Martians - 4/5 stars With all the recent hype of possible life on Mars, as depicted by apparent new photo evidence from NASA, there couldn’t have been a more perfect time to have released this movie. Being an obsessive chick flick fan, I somehow strangely found myself sitting among geek-ish Star Wars fans, watching this sci-fi movie. But then again, who in their right mind would lose an opportunity to ogle at the gorgeous Matt Damon? In a nutshell, the Ridley Scott’s science-fiction survival epic is about an astronaut accidentally stranded on Mars and decides he’s going to “science the sh*t” out of his dilemma.The most fascinating sequence, comes when NASA astronaut Mark Watney, stranded on arid Mars, decides he must grow food. Using a plastic tarp, a flame and a bucket of self-produced fertilizer, Watney creates not just a small potato farm but enough water to sustain it. When the first green shoots emerge from the soil, Watney, realises he has performed a modern miracle: He has made a lifeless planet habitable.When a problem arises, sit down and do the math to solve it, because that’s the only way we cannot just live but also transcend our simple lives for something greater than ourselves. All in all, this space saga is all about being human and going back to the basics.

The Intern - 31/2 stars After a little bout of ‘switching to the other side’, I return with a typical chick-flick, ‘The Intern.’ So gather the girls for the perfect night out at the movies! I am a huge fan of Anne Hathaway and, as usual, she does not disappoint with her award-winning performance. However, all credit goes to female director Nancy Meyers, who executes the story in her unique style, proving yet again she is Hollywood’s best female director. She reminds us that there is life after 60 in a frothy exploration of romantic travails set in the offices of a thriving dot-com fashion business. As she bridges the divide between the old-fashioned ideals of a bygone era and the relentless 24-hour bombardment of information of the present day, the writer-director sketches a touching friendship between a 70-year-old widower and a high-flying young executive. Nicely acted by Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, the artificial sweetener has its bright spots but is practically blinded by its own privileged perspective of life among the landed gentry of Brooklyn. It’s a cute little movie with cute little problems faced by cute little people.

Hotel Transylvania 2 - 2/12 stars As much as Hotel Trans is targeted towards kids, it is equally as entertaining for adults alike. This version picks up where the last left off. Dracula (Sandler) has opened his hotel’s doors to humans and even allowed his daughter, Mavis (Selena Gomez), to marry the mortal Johnny (Andy Samberg).Within minutes after their wedding, Mavis and Johnny have already conceived and birthed a boy named Dennis, who gets his curly red hair from his father but might or might not be a vampire (we don’t know, because for no explicable reason their teeth don’t grow in until the age of five).The film’s plot centres on this question of “Is he or isn’t he?”, with Dracula doing everything he can to ensure that his vampiric bloodline continues. It’s a predictable dilemma with a predictable outcome, even for a children’s movie. But you know what? Hotel Transylvania 2 is kind of a fun movie if it catches you in the right mood.

The fingertips that once drew life away assimilate with that of the ocean-crashing waves that give and take. Makotikoti Zikale stands on the shore lines and looks to the sparkling water that gives purpose to a life he feared. This man’s story began way before the moments of desperation as he stood in court pleading for forgiveness. In March 2011, Makotikoti Zikale was sentenced to five years imprisonment for killing a loggerhead turtle within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park which is a world heritage site. The circumstances leading up to this moment were nothing short of debilitating poverty. It is a story of a man that was so desperate and overcome with the responsibility of feeding his family. From a young, age Makotikoti left school to become the provider for his family. The relationship he shared with this beloved mother has heavily influenced the exceptional man he is today. Makotikoti was offered a total of R500 to poach one of the infant loggerhead turtles that remain an endangered species, which he obliged, option less, in order to provide for his family. Poaching the turtles was a form of survival within the community as the flesh could be used for food and the fat for ‘muthi’. Once his actions had been completed, it had all caught up with him resulting in a prison sentence that caused his entire world to come crashing down. Five years was considered a feat for the poaching world. But, retrospectively, from a humane perspective... five years? “World, I am afraid of you…” Makotikoti began his journey of contrition whilst inside the four walls of his jail cell, as he engaged in writing poetry, a narrative testimony. His deepest fear was fuelled by the thought of his dear 95-year-oldmother passing before he could see her again. Those walls saw the deepest sadness, weeping and prayer enriched with a sense of epiphany. “… but my brothers the hardship of losing time, of being disgraced, of losing your dignity, does not mean the end of life. Try my brothers; it is not difficult to change.” March 2012 saw the early release of the gentle soul that came to terms with the fact that his actions were wrong. Sadly, the day of Makotikoti’s discharge was the day of his mother’s funeral. It is not hard to imagine a part of Makotikoti died that day as he stood at the funeral, with tears in his eyes declaring: “I am not a criminal” intertwined with a promise to tell the world his story. During the course of Makotikoti’s trial, dubbed the ‘turtle butcher’, the Roving Reporters (a Durban based investigative journalism group headed up by Fred Kockott) joined forces to explore Makotikoti’s journey, having recognised the potential for empowerment and endless possibilities of transformation, conservation, education and inspiration for Makotikoti and the greater public. As Makotikoti was released, Andries Botha, well-known elephant sculptor, reached out and offered him an intense mentorship program in order to teach him the art of turtle sculpting. “Art is not just about creating, but also educating and reaffirming human values,’ Andries explained, “ And that is exactly what we are doing here. We’re training Makotikoti to put back the creatively that he took away, and at the same time empowering him with skills that enable him to earn a decent living instead of poaching.” And so the Makotikoti Arts Project (MAP) was born; into the hands of South Africans, that epitomise what it means to be compassionate and socially responsible. The concept of taking a poacher and transforming him into a conservationist proves that anything is

possible. The MAP has three tiers within its shell. The first is the sculpture programme that involves the production of limited edition turtle sculptures that are beautifully hand-made by Makotikoti himself. The focus is on the support of environmental education and is supported by the Human Elephant Foundation, Roving Reporters, the Artists for Human Rights Trust, Wildlands and the Wilderness Leadership School. Each turtle figurine is precious and unique in its own way. The second tier is the MAP’s Eco- Art programme, which is inspiration personified. The programme encourages environmental and conservation education for the youth. It began with engaging with primary school children painting wooden turtle motifs, and thereafter selling those to raise funds in lieu of developing environmental education in the very school Makotikoti abandoned to help sustain his family as a young child- KwaHlomula Senior Primary School- in Kosi Bay. There is a second phase to this programme, one that we foresee will bring an exceptional degree of great to the sea side youth of Durban. MAP will be inviting schools to join the initiative by ordering an abundance of the little turtle motifs for the students to paint and make their own. These colourful, fresh and innocently beautiful turtles are to be sold at school, with 50 percent of proceeds going towards developing marine-based environmental education at that school. In addition to this, MAP is introducing a quarterly drawing competition for kiddies to explore their marine-creativity, with the winning artworks being developed into fridge magnets. These will be on sale at the MAP pod at 8 Morrison Street. The final tier is the new Roving Reporters journalism training programme. With the knowledge that these journalists brought life and light to MAP, the programme has been initiated to develop these shining lights in society, with the intention of expanding knowledge of these important issues. Issues that affect everyone. This programme is in the process of being supported by the sale of the limited edition turtle sculptures. This story is touching and, although tarnished by a sense of lost justice from before, it breathes life into a promise to Mother Nature. Makotikoti is an enigma and conveys the gentlest of respect for life. “Even during my sleep I dream of making these turtles due to my love for this job” Makoti explains,“I encourage the youth to visit me so I can share my knowledge about the beauty of this animal”, Makotikoti said. by Samantha Brill t is more than simply a shopping experience as you walk into a store that glows with an aura of authentic ‘South Africanness’. Within the heart of vibey Umhlanga lies a true gem and asset to 031 fashion: SAM (South African Made). If you are not yet familiar, you are truly in for a treat. The concept of SAM was coined as a ‘project of love’ by fashion designer and established entrepreneur Genna-Wae Webster in January 2014. What began as a sincere little pop up shop, gained momentum, snowballing into a rainbowesque store in Umhlanga Centre, since July 2014. The store epitomises something that Durban has never seen before: Versatile, boho, chic. Genna-Wae has established a ‘home’ for a multiplicity of talented, unique and high quality South African designers that share the mutual vision for an avenue that she explains as: “More expressive in their own individuality within the confines of SAM.” As a relatively fresh fashion fan, I was completely taken by the vibe that I was welcomed with as I took my first steps. Steps towards a style romance! Expectations were exceeded when it came to versatility. The store holds a kaleidoscope of colourful garments that will entice and draw you in. Whatever floats your boat, chances are you will find it, even those products you did not know you needed. So, what can you expect? It is a broad spectrum of individualised expression. From Tuesday tank tops, summery floral dresses, tie-dye swimwear, elegant lingerie and unique design trends for the ladies, to quirky t-shirts, gymified vests, sporty shorts and flat caps for the guys, SAM challenges the typical fashion experience for Durbanites. It is the one and only store that you can buy your very own onsie. And the range of options is endless. Fancy Pikachu? Or perhaps you want to show your pride as a springbok (literally)? As I explored each aspect of the store, my romance was solidified. The central focus of SAM explores fashion autonomy not only with clothing but home décor, accessories, fine art and even a unique range of ‘man products’ (perfect for your Movember). There is a flawless balance between sea-side culture and street style. The emphasis on Africa will instil a true sense of pride as you waltz through each designer rack. Some of the prominent designers that are central in the store are Tasha’s Closet, Dirty

Indigo, Miss Pretty, Gee Love It, aFreaka, and WaeWest (just to name a few). Genna-Wae has proven to be a strong inspirational role model for entrepreneurs in Durban. Fashion has always been at the foundation of her life, with her family firmly rooted in the fashion industry. She does not refer to herself as a fashionista; she did not study fashion, and everything has been a process of self-teaching and feel. “I would like to look at myself as a brand architect for people,” she explained glowing over her project of love. The ‘Wae West Expression’ is a term coined perfectly to describe the look and feel of her work.

But the journey travelled has not been all sunshine and roses. “In the hardest times of the business, and there have been plenty, the kind of person I was a year ago is completely different to who I am today. The confidence I have gained out of the initial self-destruction that SAM had brought has been amazing. You have to tear yourself down completely to build yourself up.” Genna-Wae has a close-knit team that works together to make her vision a reality and laying the foundations of a successful business and brand. Apart from SAM, Genna-Wae is a designer and utilises her factory for the manufacturing of sample garments for a variety of well-known brands (ranging from surf wear to gorgeous lingerie). The third tier to her fashion umbrella is consulting for brands such as Bad Girl, Gotcha

The future for SAM is incredibly bright. There are so many exciting plans for moving forward and we can be exceptionally proud that this brand originated from our sunshiny province. Gen’s focus on uniting quality designers under one roof is reminiscent of her belief: “The world is such a small place and we are all linked, so why aren’t we helping each other? Why are we making it so much harder for each of us to survive? If we are only in it for ourselves then we are not going to survive. INTO DURBAN


eptiles are abhorrent because of their cold body, pale colour, cartilaginous skeleton, filthy skin, fierce aspect, calculating eye, offensive smell, harsh voice, squalid habitation and terrible venom; wherefore their Creator has not exerted his powers to make many of them." It’s the immortal words of Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist from the 1700s that aptly sets the tone for what Durbanites can expect from the world-class DinosAlive exhibition, where more than 20 realistic, life-size and life-like dinosaur sculptures will crash into SunCoast this month. In fact, 25 mythical dinosaurs will be on show at the DinosAlive Exhibition and will be making Suncoast their home from 12 November 2015 to 10 January 2016. Durbanites will feel a different kind of beat – one quite similar to the pulsating scene from Jurassic Park – at the popular entertainment world, as these terrifying long-dormant giant lizards are brought back to life. To think these sinister creatures ruled the earth for 135 million years, before they became extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene, makes one wonder what early earth must have been like during this primal era. Now, 65 million years later, scientists and artists alike have joined forces to recreate the forests of the then Triassic and Jurassic worlds, bringing to life, through animatronic replicas, the creature known as the ‘terrible lizard.’The animatronic dinosaurs are realistically modelled after their real-life counterparts, with lifelike skin and texturing. The likes of the winged Pteranodon, towering Diplodocus and horn-rimmed Stegosaurus are popular attractions on show. In addition, fossil displays, a mock excavation pit, rides on the popular T-Rex and Apatosaurus and a jumping castle will be on offer. These replicas are said to be as close to a scientific ‘recreation’ as possible, and are an accurate representation of these giant lizards that once walked the earth. The show has been described as an absolute masterpiece that captures the imagination of these creatures’ demeanour and movement, allowing a visitor to feel like they are enclosed alongside a real-life dinosaur, in its natural habitat. Expo Africa’s Etienne Schlechter told DurbanZone journalists that the exhibition’s creators have left no stone unturned in an effort recapture the environment of the Mesozoic setting, allowing visitors the opportunity to wander around a surreal forest complete with the roaring sounds that will electrify and inspire all ages. “It is a Jurassic tour back millions of years using 5D technology, transporting the curious to a wonderland of prehistoric shrubbery, passive river streams, rustic bridges and rockery and sparkling waterfalls,” he says.The exhibition has become an instant favourite amongst children and adults alike and part of the fascination is due to the realistic movements and sounds made by the dinosaurs, thanks to the animatronics technology. Schlechter believes DinosAlive holds real educational merits too, and has been a source of intrigue for school children since the start. “We’ve recently been exhibiting in Witbank, where once again, the reception has been great. But from the start in Cape Town and later Pretoria and Bloemfontein, school children have been unanimous in their appreciation.” “An exhibition for the entire family, DinosAlive not only entertains but also stimulates the mind,” says Suncoast Marketing Manager, Louise Howell. She adds: “Exhibitions such as these are vastly important from an educational point of view as many children do not get the chance to experience such a world of intrigue, technology and discovery. Children and even adults will get an intimate and real sense of how these wonderful creatures once roamed the earth. It’s truly an experience not to be missed.” The Durban exhibition will feature five information boards that explain the three historic ages of the dinosaur: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous, as well as a look at life before and after these lizards roamed earth. Tickets for the exhibition are already on sale and can be purchased online from webtickets.co.za. Each dinosaur is backed by an audio guide that explains more about the dinosaur in question. It links to the DinosAlive WeChat account, which is accessible over all smartphones. Schlechter has this to say: “This is the sort of interactive element we feel elevates the DinosAlive experience. It’s

completely optional, of course, but anyone with WeChat installed can follow DinosAlive and scan a QR code positioned beneath each dinosaur model. That code takes the viewer to an audio recording that explains the dinosaur they’re looking at in more depth.” Durban is the exhibition’s final stop after an exhaustive year-long tour that began in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront in December 2014 with a smaller, more intimate show featuring 9 dinosaurs. “Suncoast is a great location for our exhibition,” Schlechter says. “DinosAlive takes indoors so there are never weather concerns to worry about. People can visit the exhibition

and then dine at a beautiful restaurant. We feel the event is perfectly situated for the people of Durban.” Twenty-five dinosaurs will be on show in total, including 3 dinosaur rides that are suitable for children. Suncoast Casino, Hotels & Entertainment is a famed resort, known for its water attractions and plush dining locations. Tickets have already gone on sale. he art of beer-brewing: Previously, a scientific discipline reserved exclusively for the chemically-knowledgeable and produced in copious amounts by larger conglomerates, thereafter bottled on a conveyor belt operation and delivered fresh and chilled to the millions out there who cannot resist the crisp experience. That was before. But enter the year 2015, and the art of beer-brewing has seen a real revolution. After years of accepting and enjoying those said big brands, a new everyday hobby seems to have taken the 031 by storm. A brewing storm. It seems like the trend of brewing craft beer in the comfort of one’s own home is gaining much momentum, as more and more Durbanites invest in their very own beer-making kits, lending their own creativity to concocting the perfect taste and flavours. While conventional brands and brewskies still have their place and continue to dominate and help enhance the revelry on the social scene, the beauty of craft beer is slowing growing on beer-holders, as more thought and effort is put into the actual taste and texture, thereby affording them more choice. It is no secret that Durban’s neighbour watering hole – Nottingham Road – has long been exploring this avenue for years. With a selection of delicious personally crafted beer, the sky is the limit when it comes to preference and just what tickles one’s taste buds. The awesome thing about craft beer is that the alcohol content is somewhat steeper with a taste explosion like no other. Durban too is now slowing learning that craft beer has become conventional beer’s new smaller but funkier sibling on the scene, a sibling that can very well hold its own. A delicious blend of hops, barley, yeast and whatever natural flavourant one desires to make their drink experience just that much more enjoyable, craft beer is, essentially, a masterpiece of creativity with each sip. The variations that may be achieved by the simplest and smallest of tweaks and additions, and with the evolution of the alcohol industry, craft beer tasting and collecting is at a close tie in the race of collectables for individuals with a taste for premium, quality beverages. Similar to wine, craft beer ages as beautifully as mom’s Christmas cake, soaking in dark rum over time. Home grown based collection ‘The Dawg Series’ is the new kid on the Durban block and is finally on the beer market for all craft beer fanatics and collectors all over South Africa. The group that brings to Durbanites this delicious series comprises of PMB based microbrewer Travis Boast (Mo’ Gravity), crazy cool creative Nkanyezi Ndela (Visual Foc) and independently strong Zama Memela (Easy Eating). These three individuals have taken a unique stance on the delicate practice of beer brewing and pairing their beers with food. Unique and exceptionally South African, the Dawg Series is something most never seen before. It goes beyond taste; it exudes quality and a passion that is so inherent with the South African. Over the coming weeks, some exceptionally exciting plans are to be released on the scene in conjunction with the Easy Eating crew. So, we start with The Dawg: a craft beer that utilises the general characteristic ingredients of the brewing process, left to ferment for a long period of time for flavours to mature and of course to give that buzz-kick from that high alcohol content. What is the result? A beautifully rounded essence with an after-bite that is reminiscent of coffee beans and a hint of fruitiness. “When you drink it you feel like ‘The Dawg’, aka the boss,” Nkanyezi exclaimed with pride. “The Dawg Series defines the characters of the people who don’t need to be told how to live and think,” Nkanyezi’s counterpart, Zama explained with an air of absolute confidence. What is to follow is a craft beer titled “The Hair of the Dawg” just for the morning after a ‘big one’, as well as a craft beer designed perfectly for the beer drinking babes, that are not afraid to give the guys a run for their money. Both Zama and Nkanyezi, are just a few of the many who believe that the art of brewing craft beer is something that has its place in local society and hope to inspire others to take up the art, affording more sumptuousness to beer-lovers. And word on the ground is that, it’s not as difficult as one may think. All you need is the home brew kit, a dark room, fermenting barrels and a bunch of beer bottles for the delicious masterpiece to live inside. The general ingredients will be supplied in the home brew kit and may involve a little experimenting. It’s totally worth the experience, especially being able to present your very own beer (be it malt, ale, pilsner or whatever you may like to name it) to your friends as you sit around a braai and gloat over what a beer connoisseur you have become.

tudying for an examination always seems to be more stressful that actually sitting down and writing the examination itself. Procrastination becomes the involuntary pastime, as one sees the need to do everything in that moment that they never really needed to do before. From the very instance that you sit down and open those books, you tend to feel that you’re probably in need of coffee. Or you remember that you left the faucet running. Then, just like that, you need a toilet break. As you start to read, your mind takes a quick detour and you realise you did not pull out the weeds in the yard. Then suddenly again, you need another toilet break. Come back to your desk, and the urge to stalk that person on Facebook grabs you. (You just want to take a quick peak to see what they’re getting up to). In that same moment, Instagram calls your name, and before you know it, an hour has passed and you’re still pretty much on chapter one, page one. If you find yourself in the similar situation, which in turn leads to stressful learning experiences, here are some tips on how to eliminate the exam exhaustion. • Summon the self discipline to prepare in advance. Give yourself enough time to study. Last minute cramming does not work. Best you don’t fool yourself and get cracking. • Set up a study timetable mapping out which subjects need more time to study and highlight dates of subjects so you will know how many days to allocate to each. • Organise your study space, ensure that there is adequate lighting that there is enough area to spread out books, that you have a comfortable chair and ensure that the cell phone and video games are out of sight. Try and get rid of all distractions and formulate a way to guarantee concentration. • Make your black and white study guide learning-friendly and more eye-catching. Use different colour pens and highlighters to capture important notes. Formulate revision notes and make notes that you understand rather than just learning straight out of the guide. • Go through old exam papers and past year examination. This is probably one of the best ways to stay ahead of the pack.

• Take disciplined break intervals. Taking breaks helps give your brain much needed time to retain information. During your study breaks, drink lots of water and snack on healthy meals. But when they time comes to get back into the grind, make sure you get back into the grind. sxBefore you know it, that dreaded day of the examination arrives and more often than not, the nerves kick in. Here are some tips to help you prepare so that you can combat those jitters in true academic ninja style. 1) Wake up early. Get the day going to have enough time to get ready. 2) Have a balanced breakfast, something that is satisfying, healthy and stomach settling. 3) Double check the date, time and exam venue to avoid confusion. 4) Check that you have everything you require such as your ID, timetable and appropriate stationary. 5) Make sure you have plenty of time to fill up on fluids (either water or energy drinks) and visit the toilet before commencing the exam. 6) Calm down, find your seat and ignore any one that is in a panicked state around you. 7) Take the first few minutes just to read through the question paper, familiarising yourself with the questions and formulating your thoughts into answers. 8) Start to answer questions you are confident and comfortable with, to get them out of the way early. 9) Don’t spend more time than you planned on a particular section/question or you might run out of time to answer the rest. Best to leave any questions that you are unsure about for the end. 10) When done, use the last minutes to review your answers. Check that everything is up to standard and hand the paper over calmly, confidently . Then breathe. Just breathe. □
