My one and only nephew celebrates his birthday this month. So the other day, my sister-in-law sent me a Whatsapp message saying that he had decided on a gift that he wanted. Having just touched down on pay day, I was prepared for the worst.

Turns out, Tinder is the cupid app, playing match-maker to the singletons of the 21st century by suggesting possible partners that are within the same proximity to them. And while it may seem a bit of a desperate resort, apparently it is not. In 2014, the app saw approximately 1 billion swipes per day, with a popularity growing by the hour. Fast forward two years later, and that number has grown considerably. This was good news to me. It meant that despite the age of cynicism we find ourselves in, love is still in the air, with people still clinging to the hope of the new. Love is definitely the magic that has inspired our pages for this edition and with the new year upon us, we explore the very essence that Tinder inspires: optimism and taking a chance on life in our combined January and February issue. This edition is inspired by the celebration of the new year and Valentine’s Day and as such our optimism junkie, Sam, visits the Township Yogi Project, where she documents yoga classes held in a range of townships throughout KZN. She hears of how people are being empowered and enlightened by this ancient practice. She also catches up with local personalities who take a retrospect view of their lives, jotting down a bit of advice they would give to their younger selves. Debbie finds us five things for parents to do now that the kids are back at school. She also helps out the ladies with creative marriage proposal ideas this leap year and let’s us in on eThekwini’s Inner City Local Area Plan. We also meet Danica who teaches us how to salsa. There’s loads more to help kick off your 2016 on just the right note. So here’s to a new spark, a new love, a new year and a new you!

The city of Durban is about to undergo its biggest make-over yet! by Debbie Perumal

t's a New Year for Durbanites, and that means it is time for brand new endeavours. As we shift into the fresh year, the excitement continues with Durban getting ready for several innovative plans by the council to turn this city into an urban gem ahead of the Common Wealth Games 2022. Most of the initial plans for Durban are still under construction, but members of the executive council are busy with the strategic ideas to bring our beautiful city up to speed.

Introducing... The Inner City Local Area Plan There are definitely major plans ahead for 2016 and city management has quite the mammoth task ahead of them with plans to rejunvenate the weathered city of Durban in the build-up to the 2022 Common Wealth Games. The eThekwini municipality confirmed that they have recently held a successful workshop where experts in the built environment field were invited to come together to comment on the proposed Inner City Local Area Plan. In the last few decades, issues of a political struggle and the task of achieving social equality has demanded the greater slice of the city's resources and time. But as time passed, the physical aspects of the inner city became neglected and overlooked. Crime thrived during this time and took a sore toll on the general look and feel of the inner city as a whole. Durbanites were reluctant to venture into the inner city for fear of becoming victims of pick-pocketing or a quick street mugging, and having to negotiate their way through delapidated sidewalks and piles of litter that created an unwelcoming stench. Fortunately, all this is about to change and city management is hard at work to PAGE 4

www.megazonehitradio.com

formulate a strategy that would bring about a sustainable change for the people of Durban. They have therefore introduced the Local Area Plan. Ultimately, this plan aims to ensure the inner-city of Durban will be a vibrant, connected and integrated city centre to provide a suitable environment for economic, residential, sporting and leisure opportunities for all. And 2016 is the year that has been earmarked for the many months long execution of such a sophisticated plan. Municipality’s Communications Head, Tozi Mthethwa, told DurbanZone journalists that further arrangements include an open-day in March to obtain comments on the Local Area Plan as well as another major workshop to discuss a re-development plan. The precinct plans are expected to be completed in May this year and the regeneration plan is anticipated to be completed by the third quarter of 2016 and will then shift to an implementation focus. And council is not taking any short-cuts this time in ensuring that Durbanites get equally involved in the massive plans for the city. They are pulling out all the stops. “A major carnival will be planned for May next year with the intention of creating a paradigm shift in the way the inner city is perceived and used as a reference point. The inner city master plan will be launched at the carnival to better illustrate the changes planned for Durban while at the same time activating

the inner city precinct," Mthethwa explained. Mthethwa further explained that as the meetings and discussions progress, city leaders and officials will be promoting Durban’s diverse culture, encouraging strong public-private sector involvement while also mobilising resources to facilitate the creation and constructive management of the urban realm in the city. A number of landmarks have been earmarked for revival during this massive campaign. The most commonly-known of which is the Durban City Hall, where all major city meetings currently still take place. “The launch will also serve as an administrative and political revival of the City Hall as a key Durban City pivot of interaction and democratic decision making. This event will promote activation of continuous dialogue, collaboration and interaction between the city, businesses and communities,” Mthethwa added.

Tackling crime, traffic and electricity problems Durban can also take delight that the rejuvenation strategy will also tackle issues of crime in the inner city as well as traffic congestion, dilapidated buildings and the water and electricity interruptions. The idea is to build and reconstruct the city of Durban to make it an improved living environment which, in turn, means that people can expect to see positive development and economical changes that would be advantageous to the community and its people.

Durbanites’ reactions to the new plans Procurement officer, Ashika Govender, who frequents the CBD quite often on business, was keen on the plans made. “There are a few very positive changes, however, having been a citizen of Durban since birth and having seen the degradation of the city, it is difficult to picture a better, brighter view of the city. But being ever optimistic, I will keep my fingers crossed that these changes will implement positive attributes into a city bursting with promise, and that finally the situation with crime will be controlled and eliminated,” she added. Henry Yagambaran, an occupational health and safety officer, based at Dr Pixley Kaseme (West) Street, was a little less enthusiastic about the initiative. “It’s well and good to have all these grand plans but what has been done to address the issues that can derail the plan? Standards have dropped. Most significantly, with crime in the CBD, filth and the grime on our streets and unruly behaviour by revellers, one cannot walk in town at night anymore. I’m hoping it’s these very aspects that they are focusing on with this new plan,” he said.

Ladies, take aLeap

this V-Day!

L

by Debbie Perumal

et’s face it, if you like it, then you’ve just got to put a ring on it. But ladies, take note, the year 2016 is a leap year and that means it is your turn to pop that question and turn up the love-o-meter.

Fun leap-year V-day facts Women in Finland are advised to propose only on leap-year day for good luck. If her boyfriend should refuse, he is required to pay her a fine which is enough fabric to make a skirt. In folklore, a lady dropped to her knee and proposed to a man, but upon refusing the proposal, he kissed her cheek and handed her a silk gown to ease the blow. Irish tradition therefore dictates that any man refusing a woman's leap-day proposal must give her a silk gown. In Scotland, an unmarried Queen Margaret allegedly endorsed a law allowing women to propose on leap-year day. But there was a catch: The proposer had to wear a red petticoat (a skirt under her skirt) to warn her intended that she planned to pop the question. Luckily, unlike women, men don’t expect a flashy proposal. But they do want to feel like some effort was put into it. Here are some dramatic, but oh-so-romantic proposal ideas and how to execute them to ensure you get a ‘Yes’ this Valentine’s Day. Pop the question as you pop that trunk Get some of his favourite customised cars revved up and ready with signs in each car windscreen. Place the ring in the bonnet of the final car and confidently know that with this idea he will be fascinated with the creative thought rather than the supercharged V8 engine. A treasured day Make the proposal fun by inventing a treasure hunt. Leave notes and clues in places that have some relevance to your relationship or his interests. He will be eager to find the prize at the end. When he finally reaches the end of the hunt, have the last note be the proposal. Think of it as a guy's version of romance. Etched forever If you want to be more traditional and straight out, ask him to marry you during a quiet moment. The actual challenge is in finding what to give him. After all, we girls expect a ring but in the case of a man that is not into jewellery, give him something he's interested in and have it personalised. For example, a hip flask with the words ‘Will you marry me’ engraved on it. Half-time engagement If you are sure he won't mind a public proposal, put your proposal up for all to see at his favourite sporting event, be it at home or at the bar big screen, in the form of a PowerPoint slide show in between half-time. Not only is he getting to enjoy something he loves, but it’s also fun, romantic and shows him you know what he likes. Surprise suprise On your partner's birthday, plan a surprise party, and then pretend to ruin the surprise by having him get there early. The real shock will be when you propose and all of your friends and family show up from behind the curtains to celebrate. Plan the party filled with friends and family at a bar near where you are proposing and then suggest a celebratory drink after your partner says yes. You can also have your proposal in a park, with friends and family a safe distance away. Once you've proposed, have everyone show up for a spontaneous celebration. Take a ride with a ring Rent a Vespa, scooter or bike to tour the city and invite your soon-to-be fiancé for a ride, but remind him, to be safe and wear a helmet. Hand over the helmet (with the ring box already in it), and then you can zip around town to celebrate. Another great idea is while whisking around town, have the question put up in separate signs in noticeable places, as you both are passing by point it out and see if he gets the message. Home is where the heart is If you feel more comfortable proposing in the privacy of your own home, then fill a favourite room in your home with photo memories from your relationship. You can hang them from balloons or cover the walls and as he is looking at the pictures, reminiscing the good times, with more to come, pop the question and you will be surly getting a yes. Even though this idea is over done in every starry-eyed movie, it is most romantic of all. Turn off all the lights in your apartment and make a trail of candles which your partner can follow that leads to a rose petal heart with a ring in the centre.Do something you know you both will be comfortable with. No matter what you do, be sincere and let him know how much you care. And let this leap year Valentine day be the year the ladies reap. PAGE 6

with Samantha Brill The year 2016 is officially upon us! With the new year comes new resolutions and, of course, the urge to delve into the world of gadgets. We are talking more than simply an upgrade of your favourite cell phone brand. We are talking the real deal. As technology thrives and flourishes year after year, we have seen the introduction of intelligent devices that mimic the robot human. What’s next? Probably the ability to create your perfect partner and boom, just like that, robot romance. But for now, here are the awesome gadgets you can really look forward to this 2016. Brace yourself. This is the future.

This gadget is brought to you by NeuroMetrix. It is a special band that is designed to do the unthinkable: provide pain relief with complete eradication of drugs. It works with a fantastic new technology that is called ‘wearable intensive nerve stimulation’ (WINS). It is almost too good to be true but it truly is revolutionising the medical industry by creating relief for patients that suffer with chronic pain. Once the band is worn it stimulates the sensory nerves responsible for carrying neural pulses to the brain, thus triggering a natural response that clocks pain signals. These sessions occur every hour. What’s even more neat, is that this gadget connects straight to your smartphone, providing you with the perfect opportunity to monitor your sessions as well as the quality of your sleep. They even have a mobile app: Quell HealthCloud. Image courtesy of neurometrix.com

Introducing the mobile virtual reality headset designed for your smartphone. Yes! This is the future of virtual reality. To be specific: smartphones with screens that measure around 11 cm to 15 cm on Android or iOS are compatible. MotionSync is the technology that the device works off, ensuring that the user has a smoother virtual reality experience (no more motion sickness). The IonVR will be exceptionally popular and compatible with games, live sports and of course movies and entertainment. 2016 is the year we anticipate the prototype becoming a reality, and we can’t wait! Long gone are the days that Adidas was simply just a sporting brand designed for athlete’s feet and toned bodies. Adidas has pushed borders and brings you their very first SmartRun watch. This gadget is a runner’s dream as it assists the serious (and the jogging few) with the ability to improve, with the assistance of ‘real-time coaching’ though miCoach training regimes (designed by professional running coaches worldwide). This watch is a little pricey, but it has some amazing features such as GPS that records your running speed, distance and route as well as a heart monitor so you can review your progress. It even contains a wireless music player and connects straight to your smart phone. Athletes, this is the real deal! Image courtesy of uncrate.com

Orée is an up and coming brand that is something a little different. They take seemingly average tech tools and transform them into natural beauties that look like they have come straight from the forest. Perhaps an over exaggeration but they build keyboards, phone cases, and wireless chargers from natural materials (wood and leather). This one is classy and shouts: “I am an environmental friendly fundee!”

This is a nifty device that is going to transform workplace communication. It is a cross-platform tool that is compatible with iOS, Android and Windows. The concept aims to utilise mobile devices to create an interactive communication environment. The gadget is based on content so users can propose activities and schedule meetings and brainstorms as well as live messaging. Even more interesting is that if a colleague engages in a presentation, Klaxoon allows for a survey to reach all that attended to determine how many people were engaged with the content and fully understood it. The device can hold up to 40 participants with the ability to access group content remotely (so you don’t even need an internet connection).

We have seen the emergence of the hoverboard in 2015. These floating mini movers are all the rage, but be warned, they may be easy to float around upon but not so easy on the pocket. For a mere R5 000 to R10 000, you could be the proud owner of this ‘hands-free scooter’. Pretty self-explanatory, the board is elevated by two wheels and is controlled by your weight and stance. The average speed at which it can hover is around 20km per hour (roughly) and is battery operated. Seems like a thoughtful gift? Well, they have been known to explode but we hope that 2016 will see these kinks ironed out.

warm weather

urbanites alike can agree that as much as we love our city, our current warm and humid Durban weather is making these summer days rather unbearable. Just the thought of getting all dressed up or following your regular beauty regime seems like a mammoth task and all these New Year events really seem to require

your styling efforts. Rest assured. The beauty bosses have got you covered.

Below are a few ideas to help stay in your comfort zone, and this will allow you to manage the Durban summer a bit more gracefully. • Keeping the skin more hydrated is most definitely the first aspect to look at. Many beauty houses stock hydrating sprays and products that you can use over the face and neck area that will keep you hydrated and fresher on the skin. Alternatively, opt for a toner that you can decant into a smaller spray bottle and carry around with you and use more frequently as required. • Use garments with a lighter weight and preferably more blended fabric options (as in cottons). Keep the outfits more flowing where possible with limited body hugging designs or styles. • Try getting a bit of exercise into your daily routine or as often as possible. This helps for good circulation throughout the body and will keep your skin radiant and your complexion noticeably refreshed and healthy. This will prevent a dehydrated and tired disposition. • Facial masks are a must during the warmer months, mainly for oil control if you do have the type of skin that oils when you are in a warmer environment. Use it preferably once a week over the face and neck to rejuvenate dehyrated skin. • Add to your diet plenty of juicy citrus fruit and leafy vegetables, your body is designed to store the water extracted from such produce so that it can replenish itself when required. In order to feel lovely and refreshed on the outer you have to feed the body with all the necessary requirements to aid this internal support system. Give yourself the opportunity to manage the warm months with your personal input. This will certainly make your days more comfortable.

“I

was a fat kid." Not the words you would expect to hear from the individual who was voted as one of the top five most beautiful women in the country, but Kajol Sewgobind is serious. "I was overweight and dark and was bullied throughout my teen years," she said, with a nostalgic heaviness that is seemingly uncharacteristic of the generally upbeat Durbanite beauty.

My self confidence was at an all-time low. Nevertheless, I tried it, " she said. A single shoot later, Kajol's fame grew. She was eventually approached by FHM and asked to try her hand at lingerie modelling. "As a Durban Indian girl, the idea was a little disconcerting for me at first. We come from conservative backgrounds. But I was also opened to the idea of crawling out my old skin and learning to be more empowered. I didn't tell my family, because I knew they would not approve. I did the shoot on the lowdown," she said.

But the flashback fades almost immediately as Kajol slips back into the present. It is certainly a better space for her. At age 23, Kajol Sewgobind has become an international icon known for her exotic looks and fuller figure, hitting headlines across the globe for being the first Indian South African woman (from Durban no-less) to have reached the pinnacles of the modelling industry. Some of the achievements that she has boasting rights to include being listed on FHM's top 100 Most Sexiest Women in the World, landing the 'Face of Sutra' title, becoming the very first South African Indian woman to model for Guess International and being the current 'Face of Vogue Eyewear'. But Kajol does not boast.

But the high quality of her shots was something that could not be kept on the lowdown. Kajol's pictures were splashed across the different pages and she was immediately given a stage name to introduce her to the world. "My name is Kajol Sewgobind. But the people handling my public image at the time felt that the name 'Sewgobind' was too Durban Indian. They felt that I needed something more exotic, more avant-garde. And so I was renamed Kajol Andhee. But my real name is Kajol Sewgobind," she said adamantly. The introduction of Kajol Andhee saw magazine sales rocket, as more people cured their curiosity with this exotic new brown-skinned beauty.

"We need coffee and cake," she said, moving effortlessly around the room, in momentary oblivion to the empiral self-image she holds. In her element, Kajol is very much the epitome of the girl-next-door; the bosom-buddy one asks to come over to play dollhouse with, or the ally one calls to cry to and eat icecream with while wearing pyjamas, when one's highschool crush has a new girlfriend who he kissed behind the school library. Kajol may have an endless string of male admirers now but she too knows heartbreak, rejection and restoration all too well. "I wish people wouldn't see me as this stuck-up barbie doll, in the image the magazines have created. I'm just a normal girl. I've been knocked down too, you know," she said. 'Knocked down' is perhaps gently put when describing some of the challenges in life Kajol had encountered and conquered. Born to a conventional Hindi-speaking family in Bayview, Chatsworth, Kajol is the younger of the two siblings in the Sewgobind clan with a big brother, eight years her elder. The siblings lived with Kajol's mother after her parents separated, but still maintained a fairly good relationship with their father. "We lived a humble life. We were not very well-to-do people and it was tough making ends meet most of the time. As a child, I was overweight and not exactly the 'cute kid' growing up. People rarely gave me the time of day. But we were a happy family. We had our health and we had each other," she said, always looking for the silver lining in life. Within her family circles, Kajol was at ease, but it was her highschool life that she shuddered at the thought of. "I was extremely bullied. Because of my size and darker complexion, the boys at school use to call me 'Mamajack'. They tortured me with their antics. From throwing buckets of dirty water on me, to having bubblegum put in my hair, I've been through it all. It was so hard, that I use dread going to school. I stayed at home crying most of time, refusing to go back. It was rough," she explained. But as she grew, Kajol found her skin complexion lightening slightly and the weight shedding itself. The bits of weight that did remain behind, seemed to only enhance her figure, affording her the curvy look that she has become so famous for.

Soon, the newspapers got wind of Kajol's fame and more so, the fact that she had refused to pose for Playboy SA and the international title, despite being asked three times. "I just didn't want to do something that my future self would hate me for. I still would never go completely naked," she said. Kajol's lingerie-clad images were splashed across mainstream and community titles' front pages for this bold and seemingly 'foolish' act. "It was then that my family in Durban found out that I was a lingerie model. I remember the neighbour telling my mother, 'Did you see Kajol is posing naked on the front page of the newspaper?' My family was very upset with me. My mother became more understanding but my protective older brother was livid, as you can expect a brother to be," she said. Suddenly, Kajol's life did a 180 flip, and the people who once bullied her were now vying for her attention in full force. She was no longer Mamajack-Kajol. She was now Kajol Andhee. But since 2013, after more than making her mark, Kajol insists on now using her real name. "I'm finally comfortable with who I am and how God made me. Why shouldn't I use my real name?" she asked. After making her Bollywood and local on-screen debuts in Highway Sheila, Kajol has mellowed out a bit, refraining from making too much of an appearance on social media. She prefers to spend her efforts concentrating on her international image, constantly going abroad to shoot or work on different projects. Her passtime these days are spent practicing yoga, taking long walks on the beach with her fiancĂŠ and talking to her favourite pet, an African grey named 'Kuku'. Her new success has been overwhelming at times. Kajol is now one of the highest paid photographic models in the country. But she does her best to stay grounded. "I try to always remember from where I've come. It's the one thing that helps inspire me to keep pushing forward. It helps me to soldier on. "

Eventually, the time came where Kajol decided to leave her less-than-desireable lifetyle and followed her dreams of becoming a successful attorney. At age 18, she relocated to Johannesburg to complete her matric. Not having a proper financial support system, she took on a part-time job as a hairstylist at a local salon. It was then that she met the wife of a renowned photographer who asked her if she had not considered modelling, while Kajol styled her hair. "Had I? Of course! Which girl hasn't dreamt of becoming a world-famous model? But it sounded too good to be true. PAGE 13

YOGA mends the eKasi soul

by Samantha Brill

PAGE 14

reathe in… breathe out… and again. Breathe in those afflictions and worries that are firmly slumped over your shoulders at this very moment. Hold it in, collect it and slowly let it out. Reflect. Eyes closed, you are present in the moment, it is your time to free your mind and open your soul. If you focus, you can feel the air around you and the soft breeze across your fingertips. If you just remember to breathe, you will simply be. It’s a tricky concept to grasp at first, Yoga. It appears complex and perpetuates the need for suppleness, and an incredibly patient demeanour. But yoga is a lot more. The art form is the pathway to a healthy soul. This ‘yoga for the soul’ concept all began with the vision of a woman who believed that every single person deserves a shot at a life of meaning and significance. Elle Matthews had a vision for hope.

B

It was in 2012 that Elle visited Thailand for a ten-day yoga retreat. “Those ten days changed my life”, she explained with a deep sense of gratitude. “When I returned home, I was increasingly aware of the desperation of thousands of unemployed people sitting on the curbs all over KwaZulu Natal, hoping for a job. Or the despair of people I personally knew who lived in our townships – victims of crime and violence – or those I knew who were living with the effects of HIV/Aids in their lives. I kept saying to myself: ‘They need to do yoga.’ For some reason I truly felt that. By February 2013, I decided to launch the Township Yogi Project, which would bring yoga to the townships of South Africa: because I honestly believed it would change people's lives.” This was the beginning of something incredibly special. There is something truly satisfying about the image of a little boy rolling out his colourful yoga mat, smiling from ear to ear as the little man eagerly awaits his Yogi. A guru of sort that gives him all the courage in the world: to be brave (strong and centred). This is what Township Yogi is. It represents a bruised and broken South Africa eagerly awaiting for something, or someone, to save and nurture it. It represents a promising youth ready to stand up taller, learn better, breathe better and be better. It sees our South Africa with raised arms and an open chest reflecting an inner dignity that once seemed completely lost. This is encapsulated in the words of one of Township Yogi’s members, Zweli Vilakhazi, when he explained, “I live here, but my mind does not live here.” This Non-Profit Organisation comprises of four directors namely Elle Matthews, Peter Matthews, Christine Withiel and Tazmin Mahomed. At the center of the entire project are the volunteer yoga teachers that teach free classes within the townships as well as township teachers who have trained, qualified and are now giving back to the community. From 2012, there was a steady growth in the project as the township teachers were mentored and trained with the intention of wholeheartedly giving back. It is cyclical and it is beautiful. On being asked what the project means to Elle and the communities they reach, she gently explained: “Yoga is about balance: physical, mental and emotional. And we continue to see the benefits across all these areas in different people who participate in township yoga. We want to change hopelessness and desperation to peace and hope, and those with ill health and suffering to strong, empowered people who can face their illness and difficulties with true strength of spirit. That's the kind of change we're seeing because of the power of yoga.”

This project invites all people regardless of age, gender, sickness or ability. An unconditional invitation to help the body, mind and soul. Breath and focus merged into peacefulness. This is a place for the young and old. Township teacher, Kenneth Shange, beamed with pride as he explained, “I have always wanted beautiful things like yoga to come into the township that will totally change their mindset and give them health and hope.” But what also strikes one, is the positive impact this practise has on the youth. Elle expressed that children living in townships carry tremendous stress, and they are constantly faced with negative influences such as crime, violence and drugs. “As a form of physical exercise, yoga helps them develop flexibility, strength, co-ordination and body awareness. Mentally, it helps their concentration and brings more calmness and peace into their lives. It also helps them connect more deeply with their inner selves and develops their self-esteem. We’ve seen first-hand how the Township Yogi Project benefits children and our intention is to offer township children an alternative to drugs like Whoonga, which are destroying their lives,” she said. Furthermore, Elle believes in the power of yoga to transform the whole person. The project aims at providing a form of exercise that will assist in dealing with the excessive struggles dealt with in township life. So delicately put, Elle believes that they need the meditation aspect and they need yoga lessons to carve out their little corner of peace in their otherwise very intense lives. “Yoga helps with breathing, strengthens the immune system, and reduces stress. We believe this will go a long way to helping those living in the townships who deal with daily stresses of HIV/Aids, crime, violence, unemployment and poverty. Yoga promotes strength, flexibility, relief from pressure on the abdominal organs, and enhances circulation, and can be hugely beneficial to the millions of people we have living with illnesses such as TB and HIV”. Elle reached out and said: “It’s inspiring.” The dedication of this team is touching and provides that much needed faith in humanity. The year 2016 will bring the repeated process of training new teachers, setting up more classes in new townships, fund raising for training and yoga mats, and the goal is to roll out the project nationwide. This ambitious objective is so close, and with the help of others, this project could blossom and positively impact the future generation of South Africa. So where do the organisers see this going five years from now? Elle smiles and says: “I hope the Township Yogi Project will be running in countries bordering South Africa, and that the power of Yoga is spreading throughout Southern Africa. Ten years from now, I’d love to see Yoga happening regularly in every township in South Africa and its neighbouring countries. That would be amazing.” PAGE 15

Pierre & Penelope: Licensed ust when you thought mornings could not get any more glorious, MegaZone Hit Radio has introduced their drop-dead awesome MegaMornings team, with Pierre Venter-Maher and Penelope Kirkland. As of August 3, 2015, MegaZone Hit Radio's airwaves were set alight when the duo took over the studios, back then, and have rocked out ever since. Both dynamic and vibrant in their take, Pierre and Penelope are said to be the best way for any and every man or woman to start his or her day as they push buttons and break listenership ratings with fans tuning in around the world in Australia, Iraq, Canada and the UK. "It's the wackiest, coolest way to get your bod up and at ‘em in the morning," Pierre told DurbanZone journalists. "You've got to just tune in to see." His partner in crime, Penelope, fondly known as Pene, just had to agree with her co-host. “We’re the kick-start you need in the morning. We’re all about being topical, fresh, relatable and entertaining,” she said. Both Pierre and Penelope are not new to the airwaves. Pierre has a wealth of experience in the field, and is known for his positive, energetic and exciting presentation, having being in the entertainment industry for many years now. Penelope herself was discovered a few years back after she entered a competition to co-host a well-known drive-time show with a popular radio personality. Having won that, Penelope went on to work for MRP radio, where she was trained and mentored. On air every morning, Monday to Friday, from 6am to 10am, the cheerful pair rock out with tomorrow’s hits today and a sprinkle of classics too. “We play a great mix of music from a variety of genres but we mostly spin current hits and favourites,” Penelope said. But what really makes this team unique is the wacky activities that the both of them get up to during their broadcast. From ice skating, to the Big Rush swing jump, to the ground-breaking exclusive interview of the Blood Lions documentary which exposes canned lion hunting in South Africa, they’ve done it all. These rebels on radio have taken it to the extreme, totally pushing the boundaries with every sunrise. First, there was Penelope getting her best assets measured live on air by the lovely people from Satin Candy lingerie. Then there was the prank the team played on Penelope’s mom known as ‘Mama Bear’ offering her a birthday gift of “Happiness by the body.” And of course, nobody can forget the jaw dropping comment by Penelope (“I aint never had power like that between my legs” ) after venturing out on a Harley Davidson. Catch Pierre and Penelope from 6am to 10am every weekend morning on MegaZone Hit Radio.

What time do you wake up to prepare for the show? Lucky enough, we prepare for our shows in advance because my morning alarm already goes off at 4.30am. I get up #SparrowsFart to stay up to date with the most current affairs. Then I grab a coffee and my morning paper on my way to the studios.

Q& A’s

Do you hit the tea pot or coffee jar to start your day? I’ve been nicknamed “The Steaming Latte”. That just about says it all. What is your morning affirmation? My morning motivation is just simply put: Rise and shine.

Adventure #SELFLOVE Sam delves into the depts of Oribi Gorge this Valentines month in search of a deeper kind of love.

F

ebruary marks the month of love and naturally latches onto the romantic love that is exemplified by the little round bottomed cupid and his arrows of good fortune. Having somewhat recently experienced a break-up which has left me in a hue of singleness, my mind wandered forward to the thoughts of, “This year I am Valentineless”, “Roses everywhere… except for me” and “Relationships suck. That’s why I am not in one”. But I took the stance that this month. This year is going to be different. After all, this month marks love in all shapes and forms, and notably, it marks the most important love of all: self love. My heart was hungry for an adventure to heal the mind and soul. There was a chanting within my very being that was softly nudging me towards visiting a place where I could throw away all the complexes I had acquired and look upon a scenic perfection that would firmly root me within my province and myself. Having noted that my previous relationship left me feeling completely devoid of being a strong independent woman, I took a stance to regain who I was and who I want to be. I am also a firm believer that nature has the power to heal in any capacity and form. And that healing was exactly what followed… Allow me to introduce you to one of the wonders of South Africa: The Oribi Gorge. Admittedly, I had ventured to this place in the past with my now ex yet I had a voice recalling me to the breath-taking location. Perhaps it was to revisit in order to gain a sense of closure but most importantly I felt the call to centre my soul and engage in a journey towards forgiving my imperfections and embracing the very essence of what it means to be young, wild and free. The Oribi Gorge, dubbed a nature reserve, is around 2 hours from Durban and is 21 kilometres inbound from Port Shepstone. This natural wonder is a canyon that is cut by the Mximkulwana River, which is around 27 kilometres in length. An incredibly interesting part of the Oribi story is there are two gorges in this area that cut through the sugarcane farmlands known as the Oribi Flats. Introductions aside, Oribi Gorge is a phenomenal choice, first and foremost, for its aesthetics and breath-taking scenery. Fitting, given that we are on the topic of love and attraction. The Oribi gorge has been documented as one of South Africa’s most significant assets due to its incomprehendable beauty and natural perfection. In order to reach the very top of the Gorge, I began my journey at the very bottom of the canyon. I slowly ventured along the winding roads (strictly no faster than 30km/h) that were painted with the lushest forestry and trickling water that playfully tip toed around the rock formations. I opened my window and stretched my arm out to let it float along the cool air and for the first time in a long time, I could breathe. I took the time to stop and each and every park bench along the way to enjoy the unpolluted air that caressed my face and I met some of the most amazing groundsmen and tourists. We all shared the same vision:To fall in love with nature and ourselves.

a natural beauty that would otherwise have been devoid of substance. Now that we have covered the somewhat superficial part of romantic love (the looks) it’s now time to delve into why you should choose this venue. I believe that this place is for everyone irrespective of whether you are married, divorced, separate, ‘it’s complicated’ or just darn right single. This place has something for everyone - the adrenaline junkies, the relaxers, the foodies and the adventurous. This area boasts an array of outdoors activities that I consider food for the soul (the best part is 98 percent of these activities, I could partake in as a lady on my own). For those who enjoy relaxation, the Gorge has several areas that welcome you to sit with nature, open your favourite book and listen to the distant flow of the river running through the canyon in a waterfall like manner. I found myself looking within and figuring that I could either choose to feel alone or to embrace nature, at that moment, as my companion. In addition to this, the Gorge is renowned for being a photographer’s dream and has a range of pretty picnic spots on the bank of the river. For the outdoorsy: The activities are endless. Daily hikes and mountain bike trails that delve right into the forest, horse riding, birding (the range of species is incredible), wildlife viewing (showcasing bushbuck, common reedbuck, blue and grey duiker and the occasional leopard), water activities in Lake Eland and ,of course, abseiling.

For the adrenaline junkies: Oribi Gorge is home to the Wild Swing and the Wild Slide. Both of these activites are unique to the area and have created quite an impact. And I will be the first to tell you, if you had an ounce of ‘woe is me’ in you, these rides will smack that right out of you and replace it with “I am, quite literally, the queen of the world”. Quick rundown: The wild swing is not for the faint at heart. I stood at the top of Lehr’s waterfall and I leapt into the unknown (165m drop and swing from one side to the other). Little did I know that this is the highest swing in the world and is equivalent to pouncing off a 55 storey building and reaching a total speed of 120 km/h. For the less fearless the Wild Slide is the activity for you. Make no mistake, it is exhilarating but in the form of a Zip Line across the top of the Gorge from the Lehr’s Waterfall. Throughout this, I got a bird’s eye view of the falls and even the Baboon’s Castle. And what better way to end off my self love adventure than with a good old braai at one of the many beautiful braai areas that allow for the opportunity to indulge on meaty goodness and that wholesome, delicious scent that reminded me of home. The month of love is so much more than red roses and chocolates wrapped in a bow. It is a time of reflection providing the opportunity to let go, let live and let love, for Finally, at the top of the Oribi Gorge I stepped out of my car and yourself. Oribi Gorge gave me the perfect platform to fall in love looked out at the valleyesque setting that was gently paint with the Sam I am and the Sam I want to be. brushed with soft mist and clouds. It was immediately reminiscent of the resilience of the human spirit and soul. Just as the most beautiful of structures are eroded by natural occurrences by Samantha Brill (similar to break ups and social setbacks) true beauty emerges, PAGE 19

Get Your Happiness On From Day One

H

appy New Year and best wishes for 2016! May this year bring you an abundance of happiness, love and great health. It’s a new chapter in your life and its always best to start the new year on a positive and encouraging note, especially honing in on how to look so that you feel your absolute best. So often we get caught up with our daily chores and it seems as if everything takes preference over our own selves. Stop. Take a moment to take in these very easy and practical steps to help you feel and look better.

H

Build your confidence. You are beautiful and unique and no matter how you feel about yourself, remember that there is only one of you. It is really important to actually feel good and not just pretend to feel good. Take some time to do a little introspection and if there is something that you would like to change, go ahead and do it for a better you. Stop comparing. You are not others. And more importantly you can't be anyone else. Allow yourself to admire others and aspire to be a better, but make sure you don’t internalise that admiration to the point where you want to stop being 'you'. Always remember to smile and never underestimate the power of your smile. It cost nothing yet has the ability to make such an impact on people that you encounter on a daily basis.

Pamper yourself . Treat yourself to massages and body treatments. It makes you feel amazing and boosts your self-esteem. Engage in fun and relaxing activities that will assist to keep the stress levels down like reading and meditating. Buy clothes that suit you. We so often hear this but we need to also listen to this very valuable advice that we should not wear clothes that are too revealing just because you think it’s the cool thing to do. Wear clothes that suit your body type and wear your clothing with pride and confidence. Get healthy. This will help you to live a longer and happier life. Healthy eating is the best recipe to feel your very best at all times and try to cut down on processed fats and sugars. Drink lots of water as this is really important for your overall health. Exercise as often as possible, even a daily stroll is excellent for the body and mind. Lastly and most importantly, do what makes you happy. It’s your life and you need to live it how you want. Dancing:

Love In Motion Danica discovers the melodic romance of salsa

o me, Salsa is freedom,” said Ben De Wet of Durban Red Salsa. It was on a breezy Saturday afternoon at the Suncoast amphitheatre, and I was there to sample the free salsa classes on offer to find out what it was all about.

When I arrived, the usual crowd of onlookers were assembled in their semi-circle, facing the sea. I scanned the crowd and spotted the music speakers. Sultry jazzy Cuban tunes carried through the air. I made my way to the music and there I found the salsa dancers arriving intermittently. One by one, the regulars sauntered up: a colourful blonde with a pixie cut, a quiet widower with a twinkle in his eye, and a young beauty from Mozambique, home-sick but at home in her dance. While these seasoned dancers took their twirls, thrilling the little crowd with their twists and turns, I spoke to the brains behind the operation: Ben De Wet and Tina Velkushanova (yes, she’s Bulgarian), both dance instructors from Durban Red Salsa. The free classes have been operating for just over a year and sprung out of a desire to bring the whole Salsa community together in Durban as well as to grow the community by creating awareness about Salsa. As I watched the dancers, I chatted with the little salsa community gathering along the side-lines. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” gushed Karen Botha and she didn’t hesitate to tell me that Salsa has definitely spiced up her life. In fact, the general consensus was overwhelmingly clear: if you want to spice it up, Salsa is for you! So, if you’re looking for something fun and flirty to do this Valentine’s Day, the free Salsa class is a must. Though, ladies might find themselves dragging their men along as the demographic is decidedly swayed. Dance Instructor, Tina says: “The men are shy.” But why be bashful, boys? According to Tina, a lot of guys have the natural moves; they just don’t know it until they come to classes. Rodney Frank, a student at Durban Red Salsa, has certainly discovered his moves. When asked why he thought the gender scales were tipped at Salsa classes, Rodney said that there seemed to be a stigma around dancing. “But once you try it, you discover it’s a great place to meet people and the ladies seem to love Salsa,” he said. Ben confirmed that 80 percent of his Salsa class is single and he’s seen quite a few meet partners through the ever sensual dance.

PAGE 22

www.megazonehitradio.com

But, spice is not all you will get with Salsa, because there’s a sense of unity and community as well. Capetonian, Ben, said that he made friends quickly through Salsa when he moved to Durban. “It’s a safe way to meet new people,” Rodney added, who specified that Salsa creates a safe environment for people to feel open and easy. Ben’s teenage daughter reiterated this point, saying that the Salsa community harbours mutual respect and that everyone is like family. As we chatted, more people gathered and soon it was time for the beginner’s class to start. There was no need to have a partner and we all stood behind the instructors in rows. “Salsa is like walking with style,” Ben said, “You all know how to walk, so let’s begin.” And step by step, we learnt the moves, with ease and edification. It was easy and fun. Even my two left feet soon fell into formation. Children, mothers, aunts, and the few brave men manoeuvred to the jazzy Cuban beats amidst the salty sea breeze, and even in the typical South African diversity of the crowd, I began to sense the community that Salsa creates. Soon the rain came out to dance as well, and the crowd dispersed in drips and drabs. Since our time was up, the music speakers were packed away, though I’m told that the class is usually moved inside when it rains. I was struck by the warmth of the people and the ease of the dance. Though one might overlooked it at first glance, it is certainly worth a shot! I’d definitely recommend a try at salsa to spice up your Valenine’s Day this year.

parents can get up to now that the kids are back at school

I

t’s back to school this month! For most parents, this is an absolute relief. For some, however, it’s a strong dose of empty nest syndrome, especially for those stay-at-home parents. Most parents get up to the obvious, but once that’s done, together with the cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and picking up after everyone, a lot of them forget how to take time for themselves. If you are one of those parents, stop. Realise that back to school means more alone time for you and it is time to take full advantage of this, if for not anything else, at least to restore your sense of sanity and balance. DurbanZone journos caught up with a few parents who were pretty relieved to have the kids back at school. With 6 hours just to themselves, here is a list of what the cats get up to, when the mice are away.

A series marathon For Lynn Goodwin, a stay-at-home mother of two, it’s the perfect time to catch up with her favourite series. “I have busy mornings all the time but once my boys are away and after cleaning up the house, I like to pull out the snacks and catch up on my favourite TV series,” she said. Downton Abbey season 6 release on January 3, this year. Season 5 of New Girl is also out this month and Mob Wives season 6 also comes out on January 13.

Hit the gym The start of the first school term generally means the start of a full-on work-out session for mother of two teens, Denise Govender. As soon as her children are back at school, Denise vents it all out on a Zumba session at gym. “I have two teenagers, Kerissa who is 13 years old and Brady, who is 17. When they are home on holiday, I have to constantly see to them with food and activities so when its back to school time, I drop them off, finish up my errands and at 11am, and then I’m off to meet the girls for a superb Zumba session, where I can dance it all off,” she said.

Xbox your heart out

Dad of two, Craig Jayapalan just waits for the kids to get back to school so that he can unleash his inner child on his Xbox and just chill in front of the telly. “I basically let out my inner child when my son and daughter are gone to school, plug in the Xbox and play till it’s time to pick them up again,” he said.

Time for a little preening Catering to her sons’ every need leaves little time for Anneline Pillay to take care of the little things, like hair, nails and waxing during the school holiday. So when her kids are back at school, Anneline whips out the trusty old nail-file and gets cracking at her fingernails, executing a home manicure and pedicure. “Even though I only go to the salon to get my hair cut, I tend to do my mani and pedi at home. I soak up my hands and feet in warm water and baby oil and paint them myself. It’s just more affordable and I really enjoy doing it myself,” she said. “My husband Laz and I also tend to get our shopping done while the kids are at school and we try squeeze in a lunch and movie date on s o m e days,” she added.

Take advantage of the not-so-crowded wifi When her daughter is at back school, Busisiwe Precoutia Vilakazi has free reign of the laptop and wifi. She said she therefore uses this time to catch up with Facebook and browse the net, doing a little online shopping. After this, Busisiwe then draws a warm bath. “I soak in a long bath whenever I can, with some of the favourite songs on my playlist, and before I fetch my daughter, Buhle, from school I try and get a full body m a s s a g e treatment which is one of my favourite type of relaxation for the day, I actually tend to be much more calmer throughout the day,” she said.

Motoring

AYGO, YOU STAY Buyers’ market happy to accept Toyota’s new version of entry level car

E

ntry level cars are increasing in numbers across the planet and are providing motoring solutions to a once neglected market. Now with the A-segment growing steadily, the competition gets stiffer. This is not a bad thing as it benefits the consumer tremendously. Fortunately there are many players in the market that can cater for this and it indirectly improves customer service levels and affords buyers better deals. In Toyota's instance, the second generation Aygo is about to dominate the A-segment. I can confidently say that as this little city slicker didn't disappoint at the media launch held recently. If you haven't noticed one on the roads yet, you will now, especially with the unmistakable 'X' that stands out in the front grille. This extends to the pillars and mirrors which becomes the trademark, amidst the Toyota emblem. What I love about the new funky Aygo is that it's available with a mono-tone and two-tone exterior colour design. It can be ordered in black and silver. With the black roof, you can pair it either with Cherry Red or an Ice White body whilst silver can be paired with Ash Grey. The X-Play models for a mere R1000 difference in price gives you leather trim for the steering and gear lever. The interior is refreshing and techno savy buyers will enjoy the colour touchscreen audio experience which can be customised according to colour of choice and graphic. It also boasts all the normal convenience features equipped with central locking, electric windows and air-conditioner to name a few. Also proving useful is a 12-volt power socket, USB and auxiliary input to add to the comfort. Being a five-door car makes it popular when looking at competitors in this segment. Space is slightly restricted at the rear for taller passengers. At 1.73m I didn't have too much of a problem getting in and out of the car. Despite the boot being increased by 29-litres, space is also restricted however we need to take into consideration the market to which this car has been designed for. It seems like the in-thing are the 1.0 litre engines and the Aygo is powered by three-cylinders producing 51kW and 95Nm, giving it the edge at higher revs. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, gear-shift was smooth and I particularly enjoyed driving the Aygo at high revs. My recommendation is that you PAGE 26

www.megazonehitradio.com

increase power timeously if you are about to overtake or climb hills. It still proved super economical as my extreme testing only used 4.5 litres for every hundred kilometres travelled. And I tested it hard. Safety isn't compromised at such a low price as it's equipped with front and side airbags. ABS is standard on all models complimented with BA (Brake Assist) as well. With the MacPherson struts at the front and rear, the Aygo is capable of handling pot-holes

as I had experienced. In this segment, competitors are the Volkswagen Up, Datsun Go, Hyundai Grand i10 and the Kia Picanto to name a few. Pricing is set at R138 900 for the standard and the X-Play models are priced at R139 900. It's a no-brainer if you don't choose the X-Play model as R1000 difference can't justify all the little extras you get for that. Overall, the Aygo can be described perfectly as compact, trendy, fun and funky looking. It is specced well and considerable improvement is noted with the quality and build. It comes standard with a three-year or 100 000km warranty. Service plans are optional.

JACK, JACK COME UP THE RED HILL SOBER OR DRUNK? oning out of the festive season into 2016, we brace ourselves for new challenges and the realities of the aftermath of the over indulgences of 2015.

presume to know more than your attorney. Follow his/her advice and bear in mind that, “A person who appoints himself as his counsel has a fool for a client”.

One of the most sobering realities is dealing with the criminal offence of drunk driving or Driving Under the Influence (DUI). If your 2015 was hyphenated with being stopped at a roadblock and charged with this offence you are probably feeling vexed. You didn’t intend to commit this offence but your minimal excess has landed you in this harrowing nightmare. You didn’t feel drunk at the time you elected to drive your vehicle. You were not wobbly or unstable. You could definitely walk a straight line. So you drove your vehicle diligently, or so you thought. So why were you charged and how do you deal with it?

It’s imperative to remember that although you are charged with Driving Under the Influence, the onus rests on the state to prove your guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt”. Consequently, do not offer yourself as the proverbial sacrificial lamb. This is not to imply that you are encouraged to evade the law or the legal system but rather to deal with a bad situation in the best way possible. After all, we don’t want this indiscretion to marr the fabulousness you intended for 2016. A Not-Guilty plea results in the matter being adjourned to trial where the veracity of your evidence will be weighed against that of the state witnesses and the presiding magistrate will at the conclusion of the evidence deliver his/her judgment on your innocence or guilt. A Guilty plea results in a conviction for DUI.

Z

A summation of Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act 93 of 1996), which legislates this contravention, is that no person shall drive a motor vehicle on a public road, or occupy the driver’s seat whilst the engine is running, while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug having a narcotic effect if the concentration of alcohol in a specimen of blood taken is not less than 0.05 grams per 100 milliliters and in the case of professional drivers not less than 0.02 grams per 100 milliliters, such specimen having been taken within 2 hours of the alleged contravention. The concentration of alcohol in a specimen of breath taken is not less than 0.24 milligrams per 1000 milliliters and in the case of professional drivers not less than 0.10 milligrams per 1000 milliliters, such specimen having been taken within 2 hours of the alleged contravention. Flowing from what constitutes Driving Under the Influence, it’s apparent that this is a very serious offence which has far reaching consequences for the offender. If you have been charged and have been warned to appear in court on a specific date your best course of action is to secure the services of a competent, attorney who will have the knowledge and expertise to do the necessary damage control. When you appear in court, the state prosecutor will enquire, via your attorney, how you intend pleading to the charge. Do not be lulled into a false sense of security by believing that it’s in your best interest to plead guilty to the charge and finalise the case speedily. There are many factual considerations that need to be canvassed before one pleads guilty. These considerations will be carefully and analytically examined by your attorney who will then advise you of the merits and the demerits of the contravention and will suggest to you the appropriate line of action. Dear younger self...

Compiled Samantha Brill

It is no secret that Durban is a province that has borne some of South Africa’s most incredible celebrities and high profile role models, be it within the sporting sphere, musical realm, the business savvy or just down right gorgeous; Durban has it all. With the start of a brand new year, 2016, there is an air of inspiration to eradicate the unnecessary from the year before and replace it with a brand new you. With this in mind, I set out to engage with some of Durban’s influential, and up and coming talent, with the intention of uncovering the steps of their journey leading to where they are today. Essentially following the saying, life is about the journey not the destination, our celebs took time to take a trip down memory lane just for you. Without further a due I present to you, an open letter to my younger self:

Majozi:

Professional musician and songwriter (@NhlanhlaMajozi)

Dear Young Majozi

Don't be afraid to make a lot of mistakes. Try things that you don't think you can do. If you fail, learn from that and try again until you succeed. Don't take offense. Offense can only be taken not given. Always put others before yourself no matter what other people are doing and saying around you. Don't hold on to or covet your personal possessions but rather give them away when you don't need them or when someone else has a greater need. Possessions mean nothing in the end, but a small act of kindness and change someone's life. Guard your heart, don't wear it so far up your sleeve but at the same time be bold and take risks with love when you feel that the time is right. People will come and go, you will be let down and you will let people down, but be the best person you can possibly be to everyone; treat everyone with same kindness you would your best friend, no matter how they treat you. Above all and most importantly, seek God in everything you do. Make sure he is your number 1, your biggest passion and your first love. Take joy and delight in him, and everything else will take care of itself.

Jenelle Joanne Ramsami:

Hearing impaired- Director at Hearing Aids Rock, international model, marketing executive and actress (@Iamjenjo)

Dear Jenelle Your smile may light up a million stars, but you know it's more than your beauty that's going to break the silence to your future. Jenelle you have to walk a few mile more than your hearing counterpart, but you know you have to strive to achieve what others may in a few months. Along your journey you might experience negativity and gossip about your passion to succeed. Only your heart knows about your passion to break stereotypical minded people. Your motivation for life will one day turn the system that you will do much greater things when you set your mind to. Take it one day at a time to fight the cause. One day, your stepping stone to a bright future will ensure a passport for those like you. Jen, life's journey will teach you the choices to make. So be observant. Don't take life at face values. Always plan your journey. A teacher is wise only because he learnt from someone else. You have one life and what you do will one day have a huge impact on your future. We all have a platform to shine. Sometimes to get to the top you have to learn the hard way, so smile as best you can. You will one day reap the benefits of a brighter future.

Dominique Mann:

Environmental poster girl and professional South African gymnast (@DomMann)

Dear Dom

Firstly, well done for being so passionate and hard working. I can see your love for sport growing more every day. You want to be the best you can be. Your hunger for success is so evident, and that's very important, but you need more than that to be at the top of your game. There is one special word I want to share with you, it is the single most important word that has carried me through my sporting career. The word is COMMITMENT. It is what will separate you from the rest. Any amount of talent is a waste without it, so never forget it. The sooner you understand that this is the most important part of being successful, the sooner you will reach your goals. Keep your body strong and healthy and never forget that food is your fuel so always be as healthy as you can! Always believe in yourself, if you don't back yourself how can you expect anyone else to? And also, always be kind to others and never ever show bad sportsmanship, even when you are tired and disappointed. Here is a quote that perfectly sums it up: “Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become and the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed you is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back… play for her.” Enjoy the ride, and never take one victory for granted, no matter how small it is, it's one step closer to the big one. Dominique

Queen Dimples Luthuli:

Founder & managing Director at JIC and founder & MD at Just Imagine Concepts, mother, and professional DJ

Dear Dimples Your good heart was your strength and your weakness, you were sensitive and yet kind. When you were bullied about your looks it never bothered you as you knew that was something beyond the looks that you possessed. Although growing up in the Rural Mission of Kwa Ceza gave you some kind of exposure into what the Village life was about, being sent to a Boarding School taught you a lot about being responsible, being patient, being a team player and most importantly trust. You were bothered a lot about other people's perception or when teased about your big forehead. You had a positive outlook on life and remained head strong. You faced the challenges of growing up and never suffered from what I term "Last Born Syndrome." You had to grow very quick when you lost your mom at 16, a vulnerable age when you are in your Teens and need guidance. The strength and tenacity you possessed is what made you become the person that you are today. You have become a woman of strength and purpose, over the years you have matured and realised that it's allowed to be "selfish" in a good way, which is putting your needs first before anything else. It's powerful to say "no" without having to elaborate and justify yourself. I am a non-conformist of note and a rebel with a cause; I am comfortable doing things my way. I have learned to listen to my intuition; I use it as my navigator in this complicated life. I have learned to live a balanced life, and putting my family first. That has led me to starting my own passion, driven business. I don't conform to societal pressure and live my life in my own terms; happiness is key as well as staying healthy and living a fulfilled well balanced life.

BASIC YOGA Poses For Beginners

And here you are. The final page of this very special issue of DurbanZone Magazine. You now understand the incredible results of practicing yoga, for the heart, body and mind. Our very own yogi Abi Rae caught up with us to share her soulful journey with yoga, a relationship she cherishes. Practice these positions, be kind to your body, don’t push yourself too hard and remember to breathe.

Mantra singing The mantra is a chant that is intended to settle your mind, bring your emotions to a center and allow your body to accept the relaxation you are about to engage in. Stand with your feet hip distance apart. You are welcome to close your eyes or keep them open (whatever makes you feel most comfortable). Hold your hands in the ‘anjali’ position (palm to palm) as a gesture of reverence with the self, a gestural sealing of the energy in the body and soul. The chant to follow has both an opening and a close. Inhale audibly through your nose and direct the air to a point between your eyebrows and pronounce the “aum” sound along with your exhalation to create the sound and breath to resonate in your cranial area. This can be done standing or sitting and may last as long as five minutes, as you delve deeper into a sense of meditation. Uttanasana (the forward bend). This pose gently strengthens and lengthens the hamstrings and is best practiced with Ujjay pranyama breathing techniques. Place your feet next to each other and bend down to the floor, vertebrae by vertebrae (head, then neck, shoulders , chest, stomach, hips). You do not have to straighten your legs unless you are able to and you are comfortable. Hold this position for 5 deep breaths and when you raise to standing positionfollow the same vertebrae by vertebrae technique (never allowing for a quick head rush when you are upright). This position also assists with relaxing the nervous system, calm your mind, improve digestion, cleanses mucous from the lungs and has even been known to relieve symptoms of menopause. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward facing dog) This pose is often referred to as the reset pose for yoga. Lower yourself to the floor on your hands and knees, set your knees directly below your hips and place your hands slightly in front of your shoulders with spread palms and your toes turned under. Exhale and lift your knees away from the floor with your knees slightly bent and heels lifted away from the floor. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of your pelvis and press lightly towards the ground (or your pubis). Lift your sitting bone toward the ceiling. With exhalation push your top thighs back and stretch your heels down to the floor (be gentle and listen to your body here). If you can, straighten your knees but do not lock them. Firm the outer arms and press your fingers into the floor. From these two points lift along your inner arms from the wrists to the tops of the shoulders. Firm your shoulder blades against your back, then widen them and draw them toward the tailbone. Keep your head between the upper arms; don’t let it hang. This pose can be practiced for 1 to 3 minutes followed by bending your knees to the floor with your exhalation. The benefits of this pose are endless. It builds bone density, wakes you up and creates energy, eliminates stiffness and back pain, boosts circulation and is just fantastic to check in with your body and stretch it all out. These are simply a few basics to get you breathing and listening to your body. Yoga is firmly rooted within meditation and in this day and age it is essential to focus on just being. Want more?
