Shadow and Light To celebrate its first decade, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University commissioned two murals by painter Odili Donald Odita, including Shadow and Light (For Julian Francis Abele) seen on this page. The mural, located inside the musuem, was inspired by Abele, the African-American architect who designed much of Duke’s campus. The artist generously allowed the use of the mural image in the design of this publication. His second mural can be seen on the wall of the Downtown Durham YMCA at 218 W Morgan St. For more information visit nasher.duke.edu.

American Underground - Bill Russ/DCVB
COME GET INSPIRED IN DURHAM, A PLACE FOR BEGINNINGS, FOR GROWING, FOR CREATING
Durham’s entrepreneurial community is booming. Rooted in science, healthcare, and technology, entrepreneurs are flocking to the city for its supportive culture. Home to Black Wall Street, where African-American businesses prospered in the early 1900s, and Research Triangle Park since the 1960s (major companies include IBM, GSK and Bayer Crop-Science), Durham has spent decades building a smart and innovative community with both multi-national corporations and thriving startups. meet.durham-nc.com
Many new businesses originate in one of Durham’s entrepreneurship clusters, like the Downtown District and Research Triangle Park (RTP). American Underground and Triangle Startup Factory are downtown incubators where new business owners can get office space and mentorship. One of only 10 Google for Entrepreneurs Tech Hubs in North America, American Underground is receiving national acclaim for its dedication to diversity. Located in South Durham, RTP is the largest research park in in the country, and home to The Frontier, an entrepreneurship and co-working space that inspires collaboration. Much of the rising talent comes from the major area universities including Duke University and North Carolina Central University (NCCU). These students are nurtured and developed right in Durham and many students go straight into the local workforce. Duke encourages this climate with its Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative, where students can start growing their ideas into businesses before graduation. NCCU has a Fab Lab partnership with MIT, where creativity and innovation reign as students are encouraged to create and invent. If you haven’t heard of Durham-grown companies like Bronto, Windsor Circle, or Automated Insights, you probably will. The work that they are doing is changing the business and technology landscape, not just in Durham, but around the world.
Don’t just take our word for it— Durham has been gathering a lot of accolades for its innovative business climate: Durham was recognized as the fourth Top Metro for Venture Capital Investment per capita by the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto. Durham is one of the Top 20 Cities for Young Entrepreneurs, based on factors like the local economy, access to funding, and networking opportunities as ranked by NerdWallet. Forbes named the Durham-Chapel Hill metropolitan area one of the Best Places for Business and Careers.

While in South Durham, explore the area that was once a unique AfricanAmerican enclave in Durham, flourishing from the 1880s to the 1940s. Urban renewal scattered this community, but its history is preserved by the St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation at the Hayti Heritage Center and at North Carolina Central University (NCCU).
Learn about Durham’s innovation sector RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK at Research Triangle Park (RTP), a global science park that is an epicenter of technological research and discovery. 147 Home to more than 170 companies, RTP is the oldest operating science park in North America.

The Durham Convention Center Complex is located in the City Center District of Downtown Durham, four miles from Research Triangle Park, one mile from NC Central University, and cradled by the three campuses of Duke University. It is made up of four venues and one hotel, conveniently located within one city block: Durham Convention Center, Durham Arts Council, Carolina Theatre, Durham Armory, and Durham Marriott City Center.
Downtown Durham Downtown is a compact and walkable four square mile area, with four million square feet of historic tobacco warehouses and cotton mills restored into unique shops, restaurants, loft-style apartments, artist studios, and other thriving businesses. There are also several major visitor attractions, including DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, Carolina Theatre, and Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Discover Downtown Durham in the Durham Districts section of this guide ▶
Durham Convention Center The 35,000-square-foot Durham Convention Center is part of the overall Convention Center Complex, including a parking deck, plaza, and several theaters, galleries, and pre-function spaces that can be incorporated to host larger events. It is within a 10-minute shuttle ride of over 3,200 guest rooms; with additional hotels under development, the Center will soon have 500 guest rooms within walking distance.
Durham Marriott City Center
Many large-scale events use the Durham Convention Center Complex as a hub, and utilize surrounding venues to accommodate breakout sessions, special events, and more. This approach allows you to customize the city to your needs, and encourages attendees to step outside of meeting halls to explore the city and have a memorable experience. Work with the DCVB sales team to create a venue plan that meets your needs.
Connected to the Durham Convention Center, the Durham Marriott City Center provides convenient lodging in the heart of downtown with 189 guest rooms.

AENC - Bill Russ
CASE STUDY: AENC
In 2015, DCVB worked with Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC) to host the group’s 60th Annual Meeting. The sales team worked closely with AENC and the Durham community to create an event that would meet the group’s needs while showcasing the best of Durham. meet.durham-nc.com
Event: 2015 Association Executives of North Carolina’s (AENC) 60th Annual Meeting
Background: AENC provides professional development, networking, and recognition for the association management profession. Members include CEOs and staff from associations across North Carolina, and representatives from the association service and hospitality industries.
Goal: Create a memorable 60th anniversary event for association executives and meeting planners to compete with prior events often held in resort locations.
Approach: The Durham community got busy pulling everything together into a final comprehensive agenda that would showcase many of Durham’s downtown venues. AENC had met in other Durham locations in the past, but with so many new venues open downtown, they were eager to come back.
Result: • This meeting drew its highest attendance in over a decade with nearly 250 association executives and affiliates. • Attendees were exposed to eight Durham hotels, meeting facilities, and services. • A custom web portal was created to introduce attendees to the event and the city.
Feedback: The meeting was such a success that Jovita Mask, AENC’s event manager, wrote to say, “The Durham CVB did an outstanding job,” and “You truly went above and beyond.” She finished by saying that she would like to recognize our efforts at an upcoming meeting.

What do you do? I promote Durham as a destination for the corporate, sports, and university markets.
Describe your dream day in Durham. It starts with waking up in any of the unique properties in Durham to experience the best in Southern hospitality, then breakfast Beyu Caffé or Monuts Donuts. I’d head off to the Museum of Life + Science, if my daughter is with me, or Duke Gardens, followed by lunch at Old Havana to get an authentic Cuban sandwich. Any day at the ballpark is a great day, so I’d walk to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for a game!
