Celebrating 20 Years
1995-2015
Letter from Leadership Durham’s Partnership for Children is 20 years old. As we celebrate two decades of preparing Durham’s children to succeed, it is both humbling and inspiring to know that we stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us so that we can see to a farther horizon. Perhaps at no other time in our history has our mission been more critical. Funding is at an all-time low, but a child only has one chance at childhood. There is no time to wait. Now is when we must dig deeper, be more creative, develop innovative collaborations, bring new voices to the movement, and strengthen our own resolve in order to continue serving the more than 23,000 children birth to age 5 in Durham. We received the GSK IMPACT Award this year, a perfect capstone to our first 20 years. This prestigious award recognizes our achievements in building a healthier community through our Innovative, Measured, Partnered,

Accountable, Collaborative and Transformative work, all of which is featured in this report. We are so proud to serve as the convener and facilitator of Durham’s early childhood system. We are your Partnership. We don’t just operate in Durham, we belong to Durham. Everything that has been accomplished during our first 20 years is a testament to Durham’s spirit of collaboration. Thank you for helping us celebrate our past, look forward to our future, and continue building the resources for the best investment we can possibly make: our young children and their families.

On April 23, 2015, community supporters, current and former Board members and staff, funded partners, collaborating organizations, local leaders, sponsors, and volunteers gathered at the Museum of Life and Science for our 20th Anniversary Celebration: Kids Rock! The event honored the comprehensive system that has evolved from the early days of Smart Start, as we celebrated our past achievements and looked ahead to our future with powerful testimonials, inspiring entertainment, and a shared sense of community.
Thank you for investing in Durham’s future and sharing in the vision, passion and commitment to help lead us through the next 20 years.

This list represents all board members who served during FY 2014-15.
This year, two members of our Durham early childhood family passed away: Dr. Joseph Haenn (Board Member 2003-2012) and Dinah Parker (Board Member 2012-2015). We are deeply saddened by the loss of our advocates, colleagues, and friends and recognize the impact of their leadership in Durham. 11
To ensure every child in Durham enters school ready to succeed, we lead community strategies for children birth to age 5 and their families that promote healthy development and learning and enhance access to high quality care.
