Our Story !

The Durham Symphony Orchestra, established in 1976, is a semi-professional orchestra that was incorporated as a non-profit in 1977. Throughout the DSO history, our mission has been to enhance Durham’s rich cultural heritage by fostering that appreciation of music through the production and accessibility of high-quality performances. Our orchestra consists of professional and highly skilled amateur musicians who are all classically trained. While the majority of our orchestra members and audience are from the Durham and Chapel Hill area, many musicians travel from Cary, Raleigh, Morrisville and Hillsborough because of the rich experience we offer to musician and audience alike. The Durham Symphony Orchestra is a strong supporter of the development of music appreciation in the youth community. Every season, DSO partners with Kidznotes to perform a fun-filled family concert. Furthermore, the DSO hosts the Annual Young Artists’ Concerto Competition in which the winner has the opportunity to perform a featured solo during a DSO concert. Plans are also underway to develop a youth orchestra that will be closely associated with the DSO. !

Our Maestro !

Maestro William Henry Curry was appointed the Music Director and Conductor of the Durham Symphony Orchestra in 2009. With that appointment, he brought a new era to the Durham Symphony Orchestra with his deep understanding of classical music. Maestro Curry is also the popular Resident Conductor with the North Carolina Symphony. Maestro Curry has conducted many of America’s greatest orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has been the Resident Conductor with the Baltimore Symphony, the New Orleans Symphony and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as well as the Associate Conductor with the Indianapolis Symphony and the Richmond Symphony. In 1988, Maestro Curry became the only unanimous 1st Prize Winner in the history of the Leopold Stokowski Conducting Competition event, which led to his Carnegie Hall debut. Maestro Curry’s opera engagements have included appearances with the New York City Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Chicago Opera Theater and the Opera Company of North Carolina. Concerts beyond our shores have included concerts in Israel, Taiwan and Thailand (the last by personal invitation from the King). Maestro Curry has worked with a wide array of legendary artists including Itzhak Perlman, Leon Fleisher, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman. As a vigorous proponent of American music, Maestro Curry has conducted world premieres by many Pulitzer Prize winning composers including Robert Ward, Joseph Schwantner, Ned Rorem and William Bolcom. His recording of Anthony Davis’s opera “X” was nominated for a Grammy- award. Maestro Curry is a composer himself and his works are played all across the country as well as in Asia and Europe. !
