ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURE

7th and Peachtree High Rise

Architecture is the design of spaces of interaction. These spaces are for a community to use and maintain as an integral part of the urban fabric. The spatial design attempts to evoke empathy from society as a means to create a connection (physical, visual, or emotional) with the architecture and the city. By providing these spaces of interaction, the connection made to the architecture encourages society to maintain the importance and meaning of the built environment. The high rise becomes reinvented as a space of interaction within the city rather than a place of introversion.

CCHR: the Center for Civil and Human Rights

As a visitor, you approach the entrance and are lowered into the earth, leaving the chaos of the city behind. Once inside, you are in a cavernous space. The space is envisioned as a sacred capsule of the civil and human rights movements. As you move around the open interior, the space draws attention to a simple floating object in the center. This exalted object is the container of the King Papers. A digital display shows quotes from the texts on the outside of the object, while the interior of the exhibit allows interaction with the papers. Inside the galleries, you are in an open space where light filters in along the sides of the walls to create a sense of a heavy ceiling floating above you. This resonates with the heavy historical and emotional content of oppression in the galleries. Finally, exiting the building, you travel up a ramp and reemerge in the city, leaving behind a sacred space.

International Research Center for the Study of Light and Color

Simplicity. Manipulation. Fragmentation. Projection. Perception. These are the defining elements of the Fractured Perception installation. Conceptually, these elements become the underlying design principles of the International Research Center for the Study of Light and Color. Simplicity in the arrangement and order of space will develop a cohesive plan. Simplicity of the form allows the building to address the urban context without losing a sense of identity, and provides a base for an expressive skin. Manipulation as a design principle develops a user experience that is constantly changing. The manipulations are meant to be subtle changes throughout multiple layers (such as skin, walls, views, and materials) of the design. Fragmentation is used to display various parts of the building in a different setting. Components of the building and space are fractured and rearranged visually to interject into other spaces. Projection as a visual element develops a complex and transformative means of viewing space. By projecting layers of one space into another, the spaces can be easily changed and manipulated to create an ethereal quality. Perception of space and experience is imperative as a design principle. The building presents itself in one manner, but is experienced as another. The physical appearance is deceptive in a way that invigorates the space with a sense of excitement and the unexpected.

Fractured Perception: An Exploratory Collage The collage started by harvesting images that inspired me. Through a series of manipulations and cutting the images into fragments, I distilled the images into colors and shades of light and dark. These fragments of images were then reassembled to form the collages. The collages qualified the initial intuitive process by providing information on the use and combination of color, light, and dark across the images.

Fractured Perception: A Light and Space Modulator Fractured Perception, as a light and space modulator, is an immersive participatory experience. Participants that approach the control panel are able to have full control over the visual experience of the installation as they change the image projection, lighting, and movement of the individual panels. The control is designed to be an open ended experience for the user where images may be uploaded, cameras aimed, or random images searched can be projected in the installation. As the participants move past the control panel, they move through the other panels in the process of being manipulated. The participant becomes an active part of the fragmentation of the images being projected and manipulated. This interaction allows the user to have images projected onto them, but also block the images being projected further resulting in the fragmentation of the resultant image. Finally, the participant is able to observe process of fragmentation at the resultant panel. resultant.

J. Stephen Fountain

J. Stephen Fountain is a medical writer and consultant that had only one requirement for his logo. He wanted to portray his name and logo as a cool scientist. His exact reference was that he wanted the logo portray him as being like Jeff Goldblum. The result is a fluid joining of the JSF initials that allows the forms to come together effortlessly. Also, the use of one accent color helps to define important qualities of his name that his clients struggle with spelling. The period in the logo mark is accented, and the “ph in his name is accented to help remember the spelling.

47

Atlanta’s A-List

Atlanta’s A-List is an underground music, literature, and art blog. The motto for the group is live, local, (sorta) indie, and (occasionally) literate in Atlanta. The logo captures the dynamic quality that is the essence of the A-List. Borrowing from the aesthetic of the Soviet avant-garde, the logo echoes the dynamic angles to imply movement and the diverse sense of culture the blog exhibits.

51

Young Architects Forum

The Young Architects Forum is a public forum for the discourse of architecture and relevant topics for young professionals in architecture and design. It consists of Atlanta’s young architects. YAF held a competition for the design of a new logo to represent the group. This logo is the winning entry, and currently serves as the logo for the organization. The concept is young, modern, minimalism. Using only a few lines and one circle, the letters are represented and unified.

Leadership Buckhead

Leadership Buckhead is a group in Atlanta that serves the business community to develop better leaders. The Leadership Buckhead philosophy is that the most critical leadership skills are developed from the inside out. While many leadership programs are issues based to engage participants in specific community challenges and opportunities, our program is character and principle based. Class members are guided through a rigorous process of self-assessment and given the opportunity to practice leadership skills that build on their own inner strengths. The concept for the logo is to allow the “L” to embrace and nurture the “B”. Essentially, leadership is embraces the community.

Crystalline Lamp

The idea for the crystalline lamp came from observing the way light travels through rock crystals. The lamp become a transmitter of diffused ambient light. The crystalline form unwraps itself to allow light to emit from areas around the lamp. The lamp was an entry in a lighting competition at Southern Polytechnic State University. Since the competition, the lamp has been on display at SPSU in the Architecture Studio.

I Will Possess Your Heart

In a short film inspired by the song by Death Cab for Cutie, the classic love story takes a dark twist. Boy meets girl. They fall in love, and live happily ever after. That is, until another boy comes along. A boy that wants the girl he can’t have. The boy fantasizes about being with the girl, and believes that she will love him as soon as she realizes his existence. He is impatient though. His delusion of them being together leads them both down a dark path where his fantasies become very real for her. Delusions, stalking, love, rejection...he will possess her heart.

Shiny Bacon: A Photographic Study

Shiny Bacon is a series of photographs that explore the abstract representation of reflections on a chrome piggy bank. Through the use of macro photography, the reflections capture places of everyday life with an abstract painterly quality. It is this painterly quality found in photography that is the essence of the study.
