JORDAAN
THE THE MOST FAMOUS NEIGHBOURHOOD IN THE NETHERLANDS PHOTOGRAPHER: ROB HARPENAU
The Jordaan is probably the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. This once workingclass bastion was renowned for tight community bonds, radical politics and a love for drink and over-the-top sing-a-longs. Gentrification of decades past worked to attract more galleries, restaurants, specialty shops and upwardly-mobile residents to its higgledy-piggledy scenic streets. De Jordaan begins at Brouwersgracht, just west of Centraal Station, behind the popular shopping streets Haarlemmerstraat and Haarlemmerdijk, and then arches around the Canal Ring between Prinsengracht and Lijnbaansgracht before ending at the Leidsegracht. Traditionally, de Jordaan was defined by the area in which you could hear the bells of Westerkerk - as Anne Frank described in her diaries. Highlights The Jordaan is nothing but highlights. Maze-like streets offer hidden courtyards, cafés (both traditional and trendy), art galleries and pleasantly noisy neighbours. One also has access to some of the more scenic outdoor markets in the country. In particular, Noordermarkt has a flea market on Monday mornings and an organic farmers’ market on Saturdays. Eating & drinking One can join along with the sing-a-longs that still occur in such traditional bars as Café Nol. There are many more modern, trendy bars around Noordermarkt and along Westerstraat and Rozengracht. The side-streets that run south of Westerstraat have recently developed into a strong culinary district with some of the city’s more highly regarded restaurants. HELLOAMS.NL/140

ROMANTIC | STAALSTRAAT / WATERLOOPLEIN
A love lock is a padlock which sweethearts lock to a bridge to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts’ names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love. The drawbridge crossing the Groenburgwal Canal, near the Southern Church tower, is the perfect spot to symbolize your love. Couples have attached loads of love padlocks to the sturdy black iron chains. HELLOAMS.NL/141

TYPICAL AMSTERDAM HOUSES PHOTOS: ONAHAZYMORNING.COM
From the narrowest house in the world to a house with many heads, there are many weird and wonderful buildings to explore in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is famous for its brickwork, but it wasn’t always this way. The original medieval buildings were made of wood, but following devastating fires in 1421 and 1452, most of the city burned down and houses were no longer allowed to be built with wooden sides. Oldest house in Amsterdam Begijnhof 34, known as Houten Huys (wooden house), is the oldest house in Amsterdam built around 1425. It is situated in what was a religious community for single women, and features a gothic-style timber frame. Step through the doors into a quiet courtyard to escape Amsterdam Centre’s fast hustle outside. Narrowest houses in Amsterdam Amsterdam’s houses are famously narrow because they used to be taxed on frontage, inspiring people to build long, narrow houses. One of the narrowest houses in the world is at Singel 7. The house is one meter wide, and fits snugly between bigger houses. The smallest house is at Oude Hoogstraat 22, next to the East India House, standing just 2.02 metres wide and 6 metres deep. As you marvel at the narrow houses, you might notice that many have a plaque with a picture located halfway up the gable. This dates back to the Middle Ages when many people couldn’t read, and used the plaques to identify the name or profession of the owner. Keep an eye out for one of over 650 plaques that have been preserved throughout Amsterdam, and take a guess at the professions. SUCCESS STORY
CASPER REINDERS
Creative mastermind behind Jimmy Woo, Lion Noir, Roses Cantina, Chow, Nacional and many more cool venues Chances are you’ve already visited one of his venues: Casper Reinders is one of Amsterdam’s most striking figures in the hospitality business. Nightclub Jimmy Woo is probably the most well-known venue, and it is still very popular after ten years. In 2004 and 2012 Reinders was chosen as ‘Most Distinct Night Life Entrepreneur’ and ‘Horeca Entrepreneur of the year’. Yet everything he does, he does so intuitively: no business plan, no fear. It is an attitude that brings him success after success. Since opening his f irst restaurant, Fortuyn, in Haarlem nearly twenty years ago, Casper has brought more than ten quirky restaurants, bars and clubs to Amsterdam and his business keeps on growing. There is now a noodle bar, a Moroccan, Asian and French restaurant, a bar, another nightclub and recently a gallery - all with their own signature, style and audience. Casper has said that he’s not actually that much of a catering man. His real love is in what he calls ‘building’, that is searching for and scraping together all kinds of paraphernalia that shape the interiors and atmosphere of his venues. With bold taste and almost childish enthusiasm he creates the concept, oversees the renovations and decorates the interior. Matters he doesn’t feel fully equipped doing himself are outsourced to specialists in their f ields, such as chefs, hosts, planners or managers. He creates the concept, invests the money, delivers the complete thing, and moves on to the next project. As a result of this distinctive approach, you can now have dinner underneath an antique airplane, sitting at tables made out of old French wooden doors, watching over Mexican art, lit by copper lampshades. No shiny, smooth minimalism for Mr. Reinders. He just can’t help loving f inery and rarities. But the real brilliance of it is: it works. You never feel lost, only amazed. One of his latest projects is a New York style French brassiere Nacional at the Leidseplein. He insisted on using identical white subway tiles on the 220 square meter wall, originals of course. They looked all over France and Belgium. Sometimes the yield was 10 square meters, other times only 2. When they had collected 80 square meters, the architect said it would never work and suggested he start using new tiles too. But Casper refused. And eventually it all worked out amazingly. It’s this kind of blunt perseverance that makes Casper Reinders stand out. Stubborn, perhaps, but always true to himself and his ideas.

BO CINQ | RESTAURANT & BAR
A nightclub with its own Wikipedia site, the first in Amsterdam with a Door Bitch and famous visitors like Mick Jagger, soccer players, soap stars and the Ocean’s Eleven crew. Jimmy Woo has been an ‘it’ club for years and after a careful restyling remains one of Amsterdam’s most distinctive nightclubs. After seven years of loyal service one element survived the make-over: the fascinating ceiling with more than twelve thousand lamps. Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 18 HELLOAMS.NL/182
In the middle of Amsterdam’s nightlife district Bo Cinq offers fine cocktails and a French-Arabic dining experience created by head chef Mo Mahraoui. Hidden behind two entrances, one with a terrace at the Prinsengracht 494 and one at the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 93 – 95, one can find a refined eatery and two spacious lounges - one of which is dedicated to the oldfashioned joy of smoking a cigarette. WALKING TOURS
AMSTERDAM STREET ART TOUR EDITOR: JESSICA SLICER PHOTOGRAPHER: THOMAS SCHLIJPER
Amsterdam abounds in all kinds of street art. Walking through the city, you find all forms of street art everywhere, from graffiti to stencils, wood blocking, street paintings and murals. This rich flow of creative expression is to a large extent related to the multicultural, international character of Amsterdam. Graffiti While graffiti is often perceived as vandalism and penalised by the law, in Amsterdam there were many attempts by the municipality to reach out to the graffiti artists. Galleries began trading in graffiti art, some pieces were purchased by the modern art collections. Graffiti is often painted on temporary construction fences, so this scene changes every day. Street Art Artistic events, which presented themselves on the streets of the world’s big cities after graffiti, are now referred to simply as “street art”. This artistic stream includes not only painting techniques used by graffiti artists, such as stencilling and wood blocking, but also all kinds of artistic performances and protestart activism. Amsterdam is one of the favourite big cities for the so-called street workers. Street Art Tour The Street Art & Graffiti Tours is a two hour walking tour. Experience this tour with a resident street artist who knows all there is to know about the Amsterdam street art scene. Learn all you want about the artists, methods and culture. Take a peek into this underground gallery of the streets. Book this tour via HELLOAMS.NL/194

A NARROW STRIP OF DUTCH COOL EDITOR: LIZET DEUTEKOM PHOTOGRAPHER: THOMAS SCHLIJPER & NIELS STAVORINUS
Just a few footsteps away from the popular ‘Nine Streets’ - the trendy shopping area consisting of nine picturesque, interconnected streets in the Jordaan area - two other streets are waking up. Prinsenstraat and Herenstraat have been the slightly sleepy neighbours of the nine betterknown streets full of designer brand stores, but now they are realizing their potential. Independent shops, trendy bars and innovative restaurants are popping up. Just two blocks long and linked by a footbridge, the skinny district the Herenstraat and Prinsenstraat form is lined with elegant canal houses. It pairs the new, cool vibe with a fundamentally down-to-earth, neighbourhood-like atmosphere. One–of-a-kind boutiques sit comfortably next to small family-owned shops, trendy coffee bars and antique sellers. The two streets are buzzing with new energy, yet they are proud of their unique composition of local shops and new retailers and visibly try to preserve that. Add their convenient location in the centre of Amsterdam and their lovely canal views to that and there you have it: your new favourite shopping and strolling area in Amsterdam may very well be the Prinsenstraat-Herenstraat corridor.

SYRIANA
MAPPA
Syriana, a restaurant with a Syrian-Lebanese kitchen, a cuisine that is relatively unknown to restaurant visitors and continues to amaze people. The tastes are a class apart, you could say we are dealing with a new culinary taste maker. People like the kitchen because it has many appetizer courses, called ‘mazas’ - very similar to the Spanish tapas. In the restaurant you can also enjoy the unique Arab high-tea with lots of Syrian and Lebanese sweets & treats. Lunch, brunch and cocktails are being served during the day and at night a delightful dinner with Arab tapas-dishes.
In the very heart of the city on the historical street Nes, Mappa is situated in a former coffee house opened in 1810 by the Frascati brothers who became famous for their very popular Frascati Café (from 1940 on). Later, the building was used as a theater with Frascati Café as a part of it. Since 2001, however, restaurant Mappa is the happy occupant. Mappa offers Italian cuisine and “everything is home-made and made with love.” Authentic Italian food is what Mappa offers, and the restaurant is proud of the fact that all its home-made dishes are made from fresh, biological products. Mappa is mainly known for its variety of pasta dishes, but besides the pastas it also has some beautiful antipasti (starters) and a few fish and meat specialties. The menu at Mappa is changed regularly to ensure creativity and quality in the kitchen.

Suggestions can be made for menu, entertainment and theme’s. New at Syriana is the “All you can eat concept”- you can eat 6 rounds and order 4 dishes per round from the in total 56 dishes with a choice from vegetarian, meat- or fishmaza’s. So you can explore the Libanese kitchen in a fun way. Price : € 19,50 during weekdays and €22,50 on Friday and Saturday because of the live music and performance of a Belly dancer. For after dinner cocktails & shiska please visit the Club Lounge Syriana Deluxe.
Needless to say, good Italian food goes hand in hand with beautiful wines. The wine list at Mappa is predominantly Italian, from small vineyards in Puglia to great wine masters such as Walter Massa. The interior of Restaurant Mappa is stylish in a timeless way; 60 people can be seated here. The staff at Mappa is friendly and always ready to help. As hospitality is very important to Mappa, you are guaranteed a wonderful evening out at the restaurant.

PONT 13
LUCIUS SEAFOOD
Restaurant Pont 13 is housed on an old ferry (pont=ferry) built in 1927. Until the 1990s, it used to travel back and forth across the IJ lake. When it was declared ready for the scrap heap, it was bought and turned into a restaurant. Since 2005, Pont 13 has its anchorage at the romantic post-industrial Westelijke Houthavens, characterized by a great deal of cultural development. A beautiful place to be, with a wonderful skyline – the Amsterdam harbor, interesting new architecture, and numerous boats of all kinds including the massive cruise ships.
Lucius seafood restaurant is already for more than 38 years a reliable address for the true gourmets who love fish. A seafood restaurant where quality and atmosphere are the most important thing. Whether you like a simple piece of grilled salmon or rather be surprised with a special fish specialty, we welcome you all! As from day one, Lucius has always been a place for national and international guests. For many years we are receiving guests from all over the world. We provide our guests a menu in nine languages. Of course we are also visited by guest from our local area and the rest of the Netherlands and many of them have been loyal guests for years.

EDITOR LIZET DEUTEKOM
D’VIJFF VLIEGHEN Wooden beams, narrow corridors, unexpected nooks and old Dutch paraphernalia everywhere you look. Restaurant d’Vijff Vliegen (‘The Five Flies’) advertises itself as a culinary museum and that seems right. It consists of five interconnected houses from the 17th century, and during the 75 year history of the restaurant has been decorated with a colorful collection of 17th century glassware, Delft Blue tiles, rare gold leather wallpaper, and even four original etchings by Rembrandt. Impressive indeed. But how about the menu? Don’t be too distracted by your predominant surroundings, there’s a young star chef at work here. Chef Sander Klaasen took the grand history of this famous restaurant and turned its inspiration into a modern menu, with the occasional wink at Dutch historical cuisine. Take the starter of salmon. It’s home smoked, marinated in juniper and seasoned with ‘VOC spices’ - in reference to the Dutch Golden Century fleet that traded spices in the former colonies. And it works wonders. Like many modern chefs, Sander emphasizes the use of vegetables and pure, biological ingredients.
If you’re lucky enough to encounter mister Christos as your host, be prepared for an evening of pure pampering. Always attentive of your needs, he knows lots about the background of the wines too. With the salmon he serves a lovely Verdejo Rueda and the main course of lamb is accompanied by a glass of Milton Park Shiraz. Served form a magnum bottle, letting in less oxygen which benefits the wine. The lamb is prepared in hay by the way, which adds a smokey flavour to the - very tender - meat. d’Vijff Vlieghen loves to remember its heydays when celebrities like Walt Disney, Mick Jagger and Michael Gorbatsjov sat down at their tables (take a peek in their guestbooks dating back to 1946), but there’s a lot to say for the present day. Fine food served in unique surroundings. A must-experience during your stay in Amsterdam.
64
SANDER KLAASEN True, Sander has a challenge. He has to compete with the special interior and the decades-long history of d’Vijff Vlieghen. He does so enthusiastically. He worked as a sous-chef at top restaurant Lute before accepting his bold task to give d’Vijff Vlieghen a new impulse. He likes to surprise his guests and excite their curiosity and works with organic, seasonal produce with respect for nature as much as possible.

Let’s say you’re in the mood for a perfect cocktail and some real food but nothing too complicated. You’d be in the right place
5&33 Let’s say you’re in the mood for some style. A fancy bar, perfect cocktail and impeccable service. You’d be in the right place at 5&33. But let’s say you become hungry after that and are in for a little more than just a bite, some real food but nothing too complicated. Move right over from the lounge to the restaurant, because it turns out 5&33 has it all.
MATTIA PEDRONI Was raised at the renowned restaurant Schuman in Varese, worked at multiple restaurants from the Soho House Group as well as the successful TOZI Restaurant & Bar in London, before following chef Daniele Pampagnin to Amsterdam to lay the foundations of the 5&33 kitchen concept. As Head Chef of the kitchen, Mattia makes sure to work with pure ingredients. He prefers a simple, honest approach to food, inspired by his childhood in Northern Italy.
Located in the art’otel Amsterdam, right in the city centre across from the Central Station, 5&33 is a well thought out place. Modern design furniture, an art gallery downstairs, art books everywhere you look and, most importantly for your rumbling stomach, a sizzling kitchen ready and waiting. 5&33 serves a surprisingly elegant menu of simple, Mediterranean dishes. With an Italian chef at the helm, it’s no surprise that the emphasis is on Italian flavours and traditions. If you find it hard to choose, here’s a relief: 5&33 works with a shared-dining concept. Which means all dishes are modestly sized and you can make your own combination of around three of your favorites. And take your pick from your dinner companions plates too.
65
The food may seem simple, but be sure to know that chef Mattia Pedroni put in every effort to make it exquisite. The grilled octopus has been slow cooked for hours before grilling it to perfection, thereby creating a lovely, non-chewy texture. The burrata - a smoother, younger form of mozzarella has been carefully selected and is paired with the sweetest tomatoes you’ve tasted in a long time. The focaccia is baked fresh twice a day and a lot of the kitchen stock is delivered straight from Italy - just to make sure he gets the good stuff. It’s a nice mix in total. A true balancing act between the traditional building, a modern setting and real, no-nonsense food. 5&33 managed to create both a metropolitan and cozy atmosphere in one. Eat, drink, enjoy. And don’t forget to check out the gallery during your stay.

In 2010 the Amsterdam Canal Ring was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Canal Ring not only remains a historic and beautiful water network through the city, but a stunning backdrop for fantastic cultural and sporting events throughout the year. Built during the Golden Age of the 17th century, Amsterdam’s Canal Ring, known locally as the Grachtengordel, is comprised of a network of intersecting waterways. These were developed through the drainage and reclamation of land for new development. Yet what was initially a practical feature, allowing the city to grow beyond its fortified boundaries, subsequently evolved into the area’s characteristic gabled canal-side estates and spectacular monuments thanks to financial enrichment from the booming maritime trade. The most famous trademarks of this new canal belt became the concentric loop of the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel canals. Aerial imagery The photos are taken from the book ‘Onbewolkt’ (Clear Sky). Photographer Peter Elenbaas is dedicated to bring never before seen aerial imagery. See vistas and viewpoints from an unique vantage point. Onbewolkt is available in different shops in Amsterdam and Bol.com

DISTRICTS & NEIGHBOURHOODS
Beyond Amsterdam’s best known sights and attractions are hidden gems just waiting to be discovered, such as a host of quirky museums, charming and fabulous shopping districts, fantastic antiques, a thriving Chinatown and an impressive library with plenty of foreign language titles. In the center you will of course find the magnificent canals, but there is so much more besides. The inner city, for instance, is bursting with interesting museums, sometimes hidden behind beautiful canalside façades. Most visitors to Amsterdam rarely wander beyond the arched bridges, watery passageways and crooked canal houses of the enchanting city center. But equally fascinating is the development boom in the eastern, southern and western part of town.
In the Spiegelkwartier the art lovers will be in their element: virtually every building houses a gallery. Various a variety of dining establishments representing all types of Asian cuisine can be found on the lively Zeedijk, Amsterdam’s Chinatown. South (Zuid) is one of the most beautiful areas in Amsterdam, where historical buildings define its impressive character. You will find Amsterdam’s famous museums, the Royal Concertgebouw, the Vondelpark and the exclusive and stylish boutiques.
NEIGHBOURHOODS
In Noord (North) you discover an exciting world on the other side of the River IJ – Amsterdam Noord. Noord is not only spacious and green, but also inspiring and vibrant. Here you will find an exciting mix of experimental festivals, picturesque country villages and stylish restaurants on the water. Go there by ferry from Central Station and explore Noord on a bike.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT (CENTRE)
The majority of people have heard about Amsterdam’s Red Light District well before their visit. Leaving nothing to the imagination, some stereotypes about this area are true: there are plenty of sex shops, peep shows, brothels, an elaborate condom shop, a sex museum and prostitutes in red-lit windows. But the heart of Amsterdam is much more than that. HELLOAMS.NL/37
In East (Oost) major neighbourhoods are vibrant multicultural areas. Neighbourhoods like Oosterpark, Dapperbuurt and Indischebuurt are very much upcoming. Nowadays it happens in East. Grap your bike and drive around in this beautifully shaped part of town.
JORDAAN (CENTRE)
The Jordaan is probably the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. The Jordaan is nothing but highlights. Maze-like streets offer hidden courtyards, cafés, art galleries, specialty shops, canals and canal houses, and home of the more scenic outdoor markets in the country. In particular, Noordermarkt has a flea market on Monday mornings and an organic farmers’ market on Saturdays.
Around the canals you find wonderful markets to stroll round, such as the Noordermarkt, where stylists often buy clothing for photo shoots. At any rate, shopping is a treat as soon as you stray from the beaten track. Get lost in the Jordaan or in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) – lanes that link the canals and where the most exclusive and original shops can be found, just like in the Haarlemmerbuurt

NIGHTLIFE AREAS
REMBRANDTPLEIN
When it comes to nightlife in Amsterdam, there are venues, dance festivals and club nights to suit every taste. DJs keep the crowd going with everything from techno, dub step and trance to hip-hop, funk and deep house. Some of the most well-known venues include Paradiso, Melkweg, Bitterzoet, Club Up, Trouw, AIR and Escape. Find the clubs anywhere between the Leidseplein, Reguliersdwarsstraat, Rembrandtplein in the city centre and Weesperzijde in Amsterdam East.
Rembrandtplein is often considered to be the heart of the Amsterdam nightlife scene, so it’s not surprising that many of the city’s most popular clubs and bars can be found here. HELLOAMS.NL/47
LEIDSEPLEIN
Leidseplein is one of the majors centres of Amsterdam nightlife and, on any night, throngs of young people can be seen coming and going from the many bars, clubs and pubs around the square. You could spend a whole weekend at Amsterdam’s bustling Leidseplein and still not see everything. This is the true heart of the city and it pulses with bars, restaurants, clubs and theatres.
The fun in Amsterdam doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, and the crowded bars and clubs are testimony to this fact. If you’re out in the evening and think bars look deserted, it’s only because Amsterdam’s nightlife starts rather late and you’re probably out too early. With most clubs not opening their doors before 11.30pm and the party not taking off until 1am, many bars and lounges are full of pre-drinkers waiting to embark on a night out. Most bars in Amsterdam are small and rather crowded, so it’s often difficult to find a comfortable spot. However, the cramped nature of these venues is a result of the fact that they’re housed in many historic buildings, which are charming in their own right and offer an alternative nightlife experience. The city’s nightlife is concentrated around two main squares: the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, so you always have plenty of options. As a result, a night out in Amsterdam can be a very cultural experience - even if you can’t remember it the next morning.
