T
he healing power of art is known and acknowledged globally. The time in which we now live has compelled us to publish this catalogue of selected works from our collection. Valentine Museum of Art’s strategy is to collect deep into the creative’s artistic output. Among the 85 rare Hugh Bell photographs in our collection are sublime images of jazz legends captured throughout Bell’s sixty-year professional career. Frank Wimberley’s triumphant Drawing Project of 140 abstract works on paper confidently exudes spontaneity and the improvisational rhythms of jazz. Audrey Frank Anastasi’s 184 ref-u-gee paintings and Robergeau Duverger’s 150 Trafficking canvases remind us of the devastating one-two punch that war, climate change, and health crises bring to the global population. Forced migration disrupts families and leads to great human suffering, including human trafficking. Isha Shabaka’s “Letting Go” and Carl Hazelwood’s “Rebirth” are abstracts that speak to the healing powers of self-reflection, meditative healing through colors and textures. Donovan Nelson’s “The Students” confronts us with the gaze of our children—innocence, hope, curiosity, confidence. Chris Cook’s “Black Lives Matter” brings us to the issues of police brutality, judicial bias, and racial and wealth inequalities that run rampant in societies worldwide. Our collection was built to share. We are confident that institutions globally will exhibit these works.
