“Since the beginning of the settlement, overwhelmed the Azorean in relation to the danger, the smallness of the plot and even why not, the meager living conditions.
In these fajãs, the Azorean was born and died, loved and hated, dreamed and despaired, knew joy and sadness, courage and fear, and lived with crises and scourges.”
STATEMENT The main theme of the project is about the protection of cultural landscape by the representations of historical agriculture practice in Fajã de São João, Azores. “Persistence”
could be nuanced as emphasizing occurrences in the past. The concept of “Persistent Landscape” came from Manuel
DeLanda(1992), he provided a unique perspective about the cultural imagination brought by the historic scene scrolls has
achieved the overall meaning of "landscape". Through a narrative
dominated by the geographical formation and historical timelines, n a t u ra l d i s a s t e r s , a n d h u m a n n e e d s , m a i n ly s e t t l e m e n t a n d farming, are considered as factors shaping the historical landscape.
As the inspiration of this concept, I tend to focus on the “representation " of the scene in the past, which connects the imagined past and present.
With the rebuilt of historical agricultural land, the rebuilt of traditional systems and the creation of experience facilities, I tend to achieve a
“representation" of the past and leading to“persistence” of the locality.
And also, the theories from Alain Roger(1997) in the Short Treatise
on Landscape inspired my thinking about the human gaze and looking into the landscape as a cultural invention. In the Concept of a Cultural Landscape, Nature, Culture and Agency of the Land
(2014) , Val Plumwoo pointed out that the cultural landscape is human-centred, opposite to the natural sciences reduction.
Humans are the only creative agent responsible for the cultured
l a n d . H oweve r, d u a l i s m i s n o t a dv i s a b l e a n d t h e e l e m e n t s o f culture and nature support each other. It inspired me that the different elements on the land can be treated systematically.
Therefore, focusing on the cultural landscape and human experience,
my project also considers ecological issues, such as soil erosion and soil conservation, as well as the prevention and control of natural disasters such as landslides. From a heritage point of view, the project sets out the objectives of revitalizing agricultural
activities and restoring cultural heritage and landscape values, while
balancing ecological conservation. The project also demonstrates the conservation and research of ultra-peripheral areas, as well as local
conservation and spiritual continuity, with global agenda implications.

of São João is situated on the southern coast of São Jorge,
along a strip of land in the shadow of the Topo Volcanic Complex.
The mapping is about the location of the site. IT is in the south east
of the s,Jorge island, The São João faja toghter with the Vimes and the borders faja are included in one geosite. And there is a plan route for visitors to travel across the fajas in the southern coast.

SEASONAL DYNAMIC CHANGES ON POPULATION
The temporary living and seasonal transferring inhabitant are social traditions since 18-19 century, because of the climate, and harvesting
conditions on the faja, which also called the “Muda” tradition
To d a y, t h e r e a r e f e w p e r m a n e n t r e s i s t a n c e l i v i n g i n t h e f a j a , h o w e v e r I n s u m m e r, t h e r e a r e m o r e p e o p l e come from the west side, many of them are tourists. Also, people from other towns and villagers up on the mountain, come
to faja in summer and autumn for havesting and planting, in winter,
most of them living in the higher land and looking after the livestocks.

In the representation of the dynamic systems in the site and the
proposal plan, I use the sketch and animation as a narrative way. The
first part focuesd on the anthropocene narration, telling the historical timeline of the geographical formation, agricultural practice , and
natural disasters. It represents the narrate through past, present, and
future, together with the showing of the dynamic elements. The second part mainly focused on the seasonal dynamic system in the site: about the population changes because of the, the different conditions of
plants and crops, and different social activities in different seasons. Focused on different types of timeline, it reflect the dynamic changes of the land, the space and the social environment in different layers.
CHAPTER 03 MATERIALITY
In the materiality part, the siteplan design has been improved and
more detailed. The process of three in the strategies is the main focus on this part-the creation of experiecence and the built of "route of representation".
The new pedestrain path links the public space, viewing points and
"representation space" to create an experience for visitors. The choice of hard materials are the key point in the design. To emphasis locality,
the black basalt is the main material used in the pedestrain, steps, walls and the rebuilt of vineyard textures.

NEW EXPERIENCE STRUCTURE DESIGN The public square is built near the coffee planting areas. It offers
plenty space for the gathering, drying and other steps for the coffee
beans producing in harvest season. Also, it is close to the gathering
place of homestays and restaurants. The building on the square will be functioned as a warehouse for producing coffee beans, which is also
convenient for cafes , restaurants and shops to get the goods directly. B e s i d e s , t h e p u b l i c s p a c e i s i n t h e c e n te r o f t h e c o m m u n i t y,
and it will be a platform for visitors to experience the harvesting, producing and other traditional activities.
The new path also linked with the new vineyards. Most of the vineyards will cover the old patterns left on the land and some will be rebuilt. The vineyard culture landscape on Azores is unique as for the latticework of walls, known as the “ currais ”. It has shown in the siteplan that the traditional “ Canadas ” units of parallel
stone walls with 0.4-0.6 meters height, will be copied in the new vineyards, as a continuing and expansion of the historical patterns.
As for a concept of locality and spirit of space, the black basalt is the main material used in the design, as the most popular local material. This kind of volcanic rock has been used in the walls, paving and building
veneers. Also it is the symbolized material of the vineyard walls.
VIEW POINTS DESIGN There are four new platforms designed as viewpoints in
t h e “ ro u t e o f re p re s e n t a t i o n" . I n t h e j o u r n ey o f ex p e r i e n c e , the cultural landscape and local elements, these areas
offers visitors spaces of rest, sightseeing and leisure. Along the seashore there are three platforms designed along the
seashore, thinking about the need of sightseeing across the channel and the experience of wave and reef. In the middle area of the path structure a deck is designed as an expansion the central community space, linked with a new path along with the existing wall of the
filed. This viewpoint will also be a good place for the sightseeing
of the other side of the channel- the peak of the Pico island.

The first is near the west entrance of the main road, which is also
the main entrance of tourist stream and villagers in summer and autumn. It is set under the road with parking area, which has
revetment around for flood protection. The steps are built on the gap
of the side of wall, which out of the influence of the tide. Victors can park their cars and walk downstairs onto the platform to get close to the sea and reef. Also, new breakwater structure will be built
under the water around the platform to prevent the influence of the tide, although there will be few threaten of flood risk in this area.

The third one is near the east entrance of the main road, which
is also the end of the stone pedestrian, This is near the lowest area in the whole side, because of the water flow. The platform

take a rest and enjoy the soundscape of steam and sea wave,
Concerning about the soil erosion issue, more plantings will be carry out along side the steam and the low land edge, as a part of the overall reforestation strategy. The native plants such as pinus
pinaster will be a main choice, as it is hard and fast growing ,

hard and fast growing , which are good
for the soil strengthen. Also, the native perennial plants in the seashore and reef will be protected and expanded.
The hillside area is perfect place of having a bird eye view of the overall perspective of the faja landscape. The observation of the
platform is set around 150 meters altitude, linked with the mountain road, which is also the main traffic between the faja and the higher
towns. Both residence and tourists usually pass through the road. The timber benches are also designed for the hikers to have a rest on the hillside. The material of the handrail will be titanium steel,
which is durability enough for safety. Also the material can reflet the color of the sky, offering good experience for the observers.
Along the mountain, the Hydrangea macrophylla are
planted, and it is also a pleasant experience
for people travelling through the faja and highland.
