the end is nigh According to the Mayan Calendar the world as we know it is going to come to an abrupt end on the 21st December. So, if like me you leave your Christmas shopping to the last minute, there’ll be no need for present buying this year and here’s to another drink in the German bar! This magazine sees us return to pastures old, with the infamous double issue. I’m off to Antigua for Christmas so a January deadline was to be avoided at all costs! So here it is; our Winter #endoftheworld issue. We put together a great apocalypse fashion shoot on the beach, cooked up our own disaster scenarios and tackled a survival guide for any one left standing. In the very likely event nothing happens on the 21st, we’ve put together a bucket list to get your own ideas fermenting on how you can live your long and fruitful life to the max. Aside from that there’s the usual gubbins, schizzle and magic. Hopefully see you again in 2013 for our February ‘Love’ issue. Laters Utd.

INSPIRATION... I get a lot of my inspiration from the streets of London, it is a truly cosmopolitan city and there are some really inspirational fashionistas out there, I think we give the likes of Paris and Milan a run for their money. I also love keeping up-to-date with social media sites such as Pintrest. FUTURE... I love blogging so I hope that this will continue to go from strength to strength, and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to do some more writing in the future. I’d love to get involved more with local Bournemouth businesses, I recently discovered Iron Fist whose distribution centre is local, it was a great find! ON BOURNEMOUTH... I love coming back to Bournemouth, the scenery is beautiful especially in the summer and my family are based here. I find that it also has a calming affect on me and allows me time to reflect.

21ST DECEMBER 2012

As you sit down with your family on Christmas day and tuck into the daddy of all lunches, feel safe in the knowledge that you’ve survived the impending apocalypse, and those pesky Mayan’s were in fact wrong. Although, to be fair to the ancient Mesoamerican civilisation, scholars state that conjectures of impending doom are not found in any of the Mayan accounts, and it’s instead a statement made by a handful of writers, historians or astronomers in order to up their book sales, as we’re all suckers for a good Armageddon story. In reality, the Mayans used several intricate calendars to number their days, and their long count calendar is due to end on the 21st of this month, concluding a near 2 million day cycle. The Mayans believed that God had previously created three failed worlds, followed by a successful fourth- ours, and when that cycle finished, that simply the fifth would begin. So the Mayans were actually predicting that the world would continue- that in another 7,000 years from now things would be exactly the same as they are today. It’s always seemed

08 | DV8BOURNEMOUTH.COM

we’re a society obsessed with endings; the oldest book we’ve got finishes rather depressingly when mankind receives a good beating for our millennia of wicked ways. But the Mayans worked a different way, looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. They had a completely different mindset. The Mayans weren’t the only people to predict the end of the world. Incan and Egyptian calendars, as well as the prophecies of Nostradamus all supposedly point towards some sort of end or change in 2012. And of course there’s the usual amount of slightly deranged individuals who’ve cried out that the end is nigh in recent years. I suppose the truly surprising thing about all this is that there are actually those out there who hold some truth to these predictions. Hopefully you’ll have taken the theme of this month’s DV8 as it was intended, a tongue in cheek approach to the topic that provided something a little different to the usual Yuletide offerings. But there are those out there who genuinely think this could happen. NASA had to set up a specific page on their website answering questions from worried

individuals. One woman said that she was considering killing her children and then herself to avoid having to witness first-hand Earth’s destruction. And NASA says the number of questions only rises, as the date gets nearer. Ron Hubbard, the builder of survival shelters in California, says that normally business is going well when he gets one or two buyers a month (God only knows who or why). But as time has closed on December 21st, sales of his shelters designed to protect families in the most extreme and unimaginable situations has exploded to one a day. I suggest we just let these people get on with whatever it is they like to get up to in Crazy Town, and concentrate on the positives that lie ahead. Yes, the Chancellor may have recently admitted that things haven’t gone quite according to plan with saving the economy this year, and our faith in certain national broadcasting companies took a bit of a bashing, but overall it’s been a successful year for Old Blighty, and as D:ream like to point out, things can only get better.

DOOMSDAY

So it’s nightfall on the 21st December, and I’m madly clinging to a piece of Bournemouth pier in a sea of molten lava. An alien spaceship hovers in the distance as a gargantuan crack forms across the cliff top and The West Cliff disappears into the abyss, thousands of people letting out a collective scream of pain and fear. All the while unscrupulous nightclub owners are hauled before the devil and beasts circle overhead throwing lightning bolts at the dying and already dead. A lion atop a car roof floats by on a tsunami of debris. You can’t describe the heat. It feels like my skin is disintegrating in this inferno. I roll on my back and look to the heavens for redemption, hoping that the second coming of Christ is imminent and that Jesus will extinguish these raging fires...

Who can tell what will happen should the world end. Doomsday all sounds very depressing. Here’s a stab at a few Hollywood-esque theories we should perhaps start planning for: Disease: Late one night a Mad Cow has a few too many Jagerbombs and jumps into bed with SARS and a monkey who has a potent strain of Ebola. Over the course of a wonderful evening a mutant disease is bred, and by early the following morning the disease is airborn. Dressed up in full evening attire ‘baby bastard’ will sneeze across the oceans and the world will become a toxic petri dish of horror. Masked people will madly flee the land, and think ‘Waterworld’ as poorly maintained, floatable crafts are lashed together as people trade soil and feebly hope seaweed + seawater = sustenance.

10 | DV8BOURNEMOUTH.COM

Alien invasion: The most popular alien invasion scenarios involve the aliens landing on Earth, destroying or abducting the human race, crushing Earth's military forces, and then destroying Earth's major cities. Usually, the story seems to centre on the battles between the invaders and Earth's armies, as in ‘The War of the Worlds’, and we ultimately become a slave planet to our oppressors. Another twist is that our alien invaders covertly subvert human society using disguises, shapechanging, creating conflict in humanity and letting humans destroy themselves. David Ike seems to preach much on this, as does the Church of Scientology to a degree.

Environmental catastrophe: Close your eyes and picture a lump of rock the size of the Isle of Wight and as deep as a skyscraper. Imagine 30 of these boulders superheated, raining down like missiles on a land mass twice the size of Europe. Where’s Bruce Willis when you need him! It’s happened before, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t happen again. In ‘2012 The Movie’ a series of environmental catastrophes utimately causes the Earth to tilt off its axis. In recent years we’ve had floods, earthquakes, tsunamis. Looks like we’re on course for something exciting!

Religious doomsday: Your most common garden variety. All who have lived before us will arise from their graves to be judged by The Beast; complete with fire and brimstone, rapture and condemenation. Simply put, you’re either going to hell or about to be embraced by the warm bossom of an angel and no, you’re not asleep in FYEO. The second coming of Christ is upon us and this time around there’s no escape for Tony Blair. What goes around comes around; karma doesn’t take sides.

SURVIVAL GUIDE

The apocalypse is finally upon us, the four horsemen have made it to town and some serious shit has just gone down. Let’s face it; the apocalypse is going to suck. Within days, if you’ve lasted that long, you’ll probably be onto your last packet of radiation-resistant noodles and contemplating how your own urine tastes. The time has come for all those wasted Sundays watching Bear Grylls sleep inside a camel to come in handy, and luckily for you, DV8’s put together this handy survival guide to help you along.

ARMAGEDDON OUT OF HERE! 1

1.

PREPARATION

WATER_

Humans cant survive more than a few days without water, so if the thought of drinking your own urine doesn’t quite appeal to you (although it can’t be much worse than Strongbow, right?), you better have a plan in place to obtain clean water. Fill up the bath, sink, empty bottles and everything you can get your hands on before the water supply gets shut off. Any large containers will also come in handy to collect rainwater, unless there is nuclear fallout. It may also be an idea to stock up on some water purification tablets – people may look at you oddly now, but you’ll be laughing two weeks in.

2

DURATION

3

RECOVERY

SUSTENENCE_

Let’s face it, once the apocalypse hits, the staff at your local fast-food chain, although already zombie-like, aren’t likely to stick around and it’s doubtful that you’ll just be able to ‘pop to the shop, love’. Even before disaster strikes, it’s a good idea to stock up on non-perishables, you’ll save money by eating out of your dry-store stash and in these financial times who isn’t interested in that. Everybody wins. Well, you win.

As well as grains, beans etc, cans are the way forward. There are stories of people eating cans of food over 50 years old and they seem alright (?), and anyway, even if you don’t eat all of them, who could resist a bit of post-apocalyptic pop-art style décor as your walls become lined with cans of Campbell’s. Don’t forget to stash a can opener as well.

SURVIVAL GUIDE

3.

People tend to get grumpy when they’ve been forced to leave their homes, have run out of food and are knackered from running away from zombies all day – best stay well clear I say. At this stage, you should have already assembled you’re A-team of useful friends and acquaintances, your bases are covered so chances are anybody extra will just complicate matters. When you’re picking your team however, remember to be brutal; your best mate may be good at keeping your secrets, but when it comes down to it, good ‘banter’ and a string of in-jokes isn’t going to win the zombie’s over or make it easier to move the debris left from the asteroid.

REBUILDING SOCIETY_

STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE_

2.

DEFENSIBLE POSITION_ Statistically, survivors are likely to be those who are naturally immune to whatever infection it may be, lucky, or very good at hide and seek. This doesn’t bode well for the majority of us. In terms of infection, you’d do best to be somewhere rural; a low population lowers the risk of infection spreading. In the case of something like a tsunami, official advice urges people to move 30m above sea level or 3k inland. If you haven’t got time for that however, and you’re suck at home we suggest the roof. In case of a hurricane, you’re safest in the centre of the building, away from any windows and external walls, for an earthquake you’re best off out in the open, away from any buildings, and if there’s a tornado, tunnel underground. You may be pleased to know that all the recycling you keep meaning to do may come in handy when disaster strikes: if you’re trapped in a building, crouching under stacks of old newspapers or magazines may save your life as paper wont compress under the weight of rubble.

SELECT YOUR WEAPON_ Whether you’re defending yourself against zombies, or just people who have lost the plot in the confusion, you’re going to need a weapon. A gun may seem like the obvious choice, but they’re not all that easy to get hold of in this country. Not only that, but the sound of gunfire is a sure way of attracting attention to yourself and giving away your position to crazies who have seized the opportunity to embrace their cannibalistic tendencies. What you need, is something for close-up work, think hammers, cricket bats, axes, you get the idea.

A NEW DAWN_ Congratulations, you’ve survived the apocalypse. Now that’s all over though, you’ve got some more business to handle – procreation. We’re all familiar I assume with Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection (survival of the fittest), so if we take this as a model, chances are those who have made it through whatever disaster has befallen man, are going to be the cream of the crop. Only the fittest, most intelligent will remain, so ladies, take your pick. Bow chicka wow wow. I guess the most important thing is to make sure that it is actually all over. You don’t want to spend your days rebuilding civilisation only to find out that round two is just around the corner and you should have spent your time elsewhere because, well, you’ll die. If you are sure it’s all over, you’ll need to restart utilities. Now, I’m not going to pretend I would know how to do this, but what I will say is that although you may not have gone to a library since school, now is probably a good time to start; all the information you’ll need will be there, and who’s going to check your library card post-apocalypse.

HEALTH

SKYCIG - MUST QUIT... With 2013 rapidly approaching, you’ll be starting to think about potential New Year resolutions, and for some of you top of the list will be to quit smoking. We all know the health risks attached to that infamous stick of death, and yet for many it seems to be attempting the impossible to stop. A lot of this is down to ‘smoking cues’, those seemingly unobtrusive everyday triggers, that don’t go away once you’ve quit. But if you can plan ahead, and be aware of what triggers you to smoke, you’re halfway there my friend. 1. Smoking and drinking at the same time is a habit many smokers enjoy and miss once they stop. But the link between tobacco and alcohol will pass with time, you just need to be aware of what you’re up against, and hang in there.

ASK THE EXPERTS // BODY SUPPLEMENTS It happens every year. We're going to eat way too much, we're going to drink too much and we're even preparing to miss a few gym sessions (shock horror). And quite frankly we at Body Supplements cannot wait for it. The holidays are creeping up on us and so too are the new years resolutions and self loathing that comes with our stretched waistbands. But we wouldn't want it any other way and actually, we're quite looking forward to it. If you're like us, Christmas and New Year is a time to let your hair down and indulge. Of course it's great if you can abstain from junk food and say no to a Sunday afternoon on the sofa but we're happy to pig-out and be slobs at Christmas. We've worked hard all year and this is our reward. We also know that the new year brings a wave of excitement for training and that's exactly how we feel. In theory, a diet can start anytime but let's face it, life gets in the way. So why fight it? Why not plan to relax over Christmas and begin training early for that summer body in the new year. When you're sat on the beach or sprinting those last few hundred yards of the Bournemouth Bay Run, won't you wish that you started preparing just a little sooner? The reality is, Christmas takes it's toll on the bank balance and the best laid plans can immediately be delayed if you don't have the pocket money to support your training programme. So rather than silly stocking fillers and chuck away gifts, why not pop in and speak with us about our gift ideas or vouchers. We know it's not as romantic as underwear or chocolates - but it's a gift they'll really appreciate! Products are available from Body Supplements. 232 Holdenhurst Road Bournemouth. 01202 552 598

IMUSCLE - APP £1.49 This is a great app for gym fans, helping those who want to gain muscle in specific areas. With animations of exercises in 360 degree, 3D view, you can see exactly which muscle groups are being used. The app allows you to edit an exercise within a workout to suit you, and even create you very own workout from scratch. 22 | DV8BOURNEMOUTH.COM

2. Being around other smokers is never helpful, but unless you plan on changing your entire social group, it’s something you’re going to have to deal with. If you live with a smoker, ask if triggers such as ashtrays, boxes of cigarettes or even lighters can be kept out of view when not being used. 3. Work can push even the most devoted quitter to their limits. You’ll be tempted to join your colleagues outside for a quick smoke and a catch-up, but don’t cave in, as this type of stressattached smoking is most dangerous in the early weeks after you stop.

4. Everyone has their own personal cues, which can be anything from being bored, driving, finishing a meal, walking to the shops or having a cup of tea. Don’t be fooled by these seemingly harmless but lethal cues, as too many smokers are. --------It’s difficult to successfully quit smoking by going completely cold turkey, so an electronic cigarette could be the solution. SKYCIG is the UK’s leading provider of e-cigarettes, the cheaper alternative to tobacco cigarettes and an indispensable tool in the pathway to quitting. The DV8 office decided to test the SKYCIG and see if it lived up to the hype. The packet came with two normal filters and one menthol, along with a USB stick charger and a mains adaptor. Whilst the e-cig is heavier than an actual cigarette feels, and doesn’t taste the same, simply having something in your hand that’s shape feels like a cigarette goes a long way to curbing those urges for a genuine smoke. Having to recharge the SKYCIG can at times be annoying, but the advantages of being able to use it inside are brilliant, especially in these wet and miserable climes. I’ve been smoke free for three weeks now, and apart from the health benefits have saved a nifty £20 that would have normally gone towards smoking paraphernalia, which all adds up in the end, and if I’m honest, would be the main reason for me quitting.

Mark and Emma Baravelli are the chocoholic couple behind Baravelli’s, a small, artisan chocolate company based in north Wales. Having won several awards in the industry, we were delighted when it was announced that they are now being stocked in Chocol8, Westbourne. We took the opportunity to meet the couple at the launch, ask them a few questions, and of course sample some of the irresistible chocolates. Q. How did you get into chocolate making? We used to run a chocolate shop in Llandudno, selling bought in chocolates. We decided it might be fun to try and make our own. We went on a short course and soon after we entered and won our first competition. Q. What was your favourite chocolate treat as a child? Emma: Walnut Whip – one of my aims for

the future is to make the best walnut whip in the world. Mark: Curly Wurly – ugh! I wouldn’t touch one these days. Q. Does working with chocolate every day put you off? No, never. We both eat chocolate every day; someone has to do the quality control! Q. What is your favourite flavour of those you have created? This is an easy one! We both love our chili truffles. Emma likes the white one and I prefer the dark one. Q. What is your career highlight to date? Buying beans from Costa Rica and actually making chocolate from scratch. With a wide selection of their creations available at Chocol8, it’s the perfect excuse for a bit of try-before-you-buy Christmas shopping.

FOOD REVIEW

Rock is the latest company to make Westbourne’s historic eighteenth century Methodist church their home. Sharing with a Tesco Express, it offers a poignant reminder that society’s new religion is convenience; perhaps the venue choice was their way of prompting some interesting food for thought for diners. No matter how you may feel about this in a social context, it is undeniable that on first sight the venue is very impressive with the stunning stained glass windows the focal point of the room. You can see what they have tried to do in terms of design with heavy woods in keeping with the building’s heritage juxtaposed against plush velvets and bright colours which attempt to bring it up-to-date.

POPPY MAE: The story behind Poppy Mae: Owner Matt, opened it for his daughter called Poppy Mae back in May 2009 and built up the cafe from a little shop unit in Westbourne, expanding year on year. This year it was decided to move into the town centre. Moving away from the shabby chic look the new place has a lot more of an industrial feel. The concept is the same, the menu is kept small so they concentrate more on quality and the coffee is still the main focus. DV8 tried the duck pastrami which had been cured for five days served with a cucumber and coriander seed pickle which is available for £5-50

The menu itself is enticing, promising ‘modern British food…locally sourced produce…[and] Michelin star trained chefs’. What was delivered however, fell short of our expectations. Both meats for our main courses were over cooked and tough, the mozzarella in the salad that we had to start was watery, coarse and lacked flavour and the puddings were equally underwhelming. The best dish of the meal was the smoked salmon served with crème fraîche, capers and toast – a simple, traditional combination that’s difficult to get wrong. Overall, we were rather disappointed, not only did the food not live up to the promises, but the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. We hope that this was a unique experience and is not an accurate reflection as the venue has a lot of potential that on our visit was unfulfilled.

SIENNA RESTAURANT

Nearly 80 years ago, André Michelin and his brother Édouard introduced the Michelin star system, the first country-wide food ranking system in France which was later adopted by the rest of the world. Since then, the coveted Michelin star has become synonymous with exquisite, inspiring food and excellent service. Ranging from 1-3 stars which are awarded by anonymous inspectors, the highly sought stars are notoriously hard to obtain and even harder to hold on to. It is so difficult in fact, that only one restaurant in the county is able to boast one - Sienna in Dorchester. Having been awarded their star in 2010, the first in Dorset for over 20 years, chef Russell Brown and Eléna Brown (restaurant manager) have maintained and built upon the fantastic reputation that they have gained. Seating just 15 guests, Sienna is the smallest Michelin starred restaurant in the country, and as such, does lend itself to allowing you time to brush up on your Chinese whispering skills. On first impressions, you may not immediately recognise it as a Michelin star venue. Far from the artificially pristine aesthetic that you may associate with these high-end establishments, Sienna has a more refreshingly modest décor; the venue is clearly an honest, unpretentious labour of love for this culinary couple. After tucking into homemade breads and a delicious selection of canapés that included an innovative goats cheese truffle rolled in porchinni dust; a creamy yet smokey test of the senses, we were presented with our starters. From the small yet varied selection on the lunch menu, we selected the perfectly smooth duck liver parfait which was served with a spiced plum puree and Agen prunes to off-set the richness, and toasted brioche to add a sweetness and further depth of flavour. As well as this we had the pan-fried fillet of brill with chilli, red pepper and spring onion broth, which from first bite was an explosion of flavour; a wonderfully light broth with a balance of spice that complimented rather than overpowered the brill. The confited leg of duck demonstrated classical skills and was cooked perfectly. What really made this dish sing however, was the perhaps unconventional accompaniments; parsnip puree, marinated fennel, apple salad and cider sauce. The puree itself was incredibly smooth and sweet without being overpowering, but it was the addition of the apple salad that really made a difference to the dish, the tang of the fruit cutting through the sweetness of the parsnip and allowing the flavours of the duck to take centre stage. The second main course that we chose was from the dinner menu; saddle of wild venison with walnut gnocchi, roasted salsify, button onions and game jus. For each dish, Eléna chose a wine to match and all of these beautifully complimented their respective dish, but it was the young New World Shiraz chosen for the venison that really stood out to us. The subtle smokiness in the wine enhanced the flavour of the perfectly pink meat and richness of the jus. The walnut gnocchi was also a lovely addition – light but full of flavour, it tied together the gamey, earthy notes that run throughout the dish. The dessert menu is equally tempting with a range of indulgent sweets to suit any taste. We opted for the glazed coffee tart with espresso jelly, marmalade ice cream and orange reduction, and a golden syrup and mascarpone mousse served with toasted gingerbread crumb, lemon curd and granita. As I am being honest, the coffee tart was a bit disappointing; the pastry was lovely but the filling was rather runny and the jelly especially was a touch too bitter for our liking. The mousse however, was a different story with a delicious juxtaposition of sharp granita against the sweet lemon curd, a light mousse and moreish gingerbread. Not only will the food blow you away, but it wont break the bank either: three courses including canapés and homemade breads is priced at £28.50 pp (lunch) or £43.00 pp for dinner, a very reasonable price for such exceptional food. I think it is a fair assumption that you walk in to a Michelin star restaurant with incredibly high expectations and that perhaps you are more critical because of this. Sienna however, is very difficult to fault, the knowledge and passion that this small team demonstrates is outstanding, and the food and wine reflects this. 36 High West Street, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 1UP Telephone number 01305 250022 Website www.siennarestaurant.co.uk Email browns@siennarestaurant.co.uk

FESTIVE COCKTAIL

After a tough month in the office, DV8 popped down to the award-winning 1812 to see if C-J could reignite our festive spirit, and he did just that with ‘J.Wray’s Little Helper’. This is a festive twist on a classic flip; a mix of base spirit, a whole egg, cream and sugar. C-J’s interpretation combines Appleton Estate 12 year, Liqor 43, Doombar ale, egg and hazelnut syrup to create a deliciously creamy yet spicy drink with wonderfully warming notes of vanilla, orange and hazelnut to sip in front of the fire this season.
