editor’s note
This month we’re proud to bring you a new style ready for Summer. Bold and brilliant as always, we have a jam-packed issue full of interviews with Bournemouth faces, including Priva Director Josh Simons and Leilani Dowding our very own LA starlet, to name just a few! Thanks to all those who came to the DV8 Party at Alika, what a night! Apologies to those of you with sore heads the following morning! This month we’re working with The Ladies Club, sponsoring the ‘What Women Want’ Fashion Show at the Ocean View Hotel on May 3rd and we are also working with the Innercity boys to bring you a banging all day party on Bank Holiday Sunday at The Viper Lounge. Bring your shades and join us for some champagne on the terrace… don’t forget your bikinis for the Jacuzzi! Throughout April, we have been busy sampling the exquisite cuisine at Day’s Restaurant – the newest addition to town, and we have also had our tastebuds delightfully kicked into action by the delicious chicken at Roosters Piri Piri, which has recently opened on Old Christchurch Road. Massive congratulations to Olivia Witt and Elliott Oram who won the Go Trek USA competition, and will soon be dispatched to America touring California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona for a seven day tour. Thank you to all those who entered. As usual, there is plenty going on this month in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch… Keep up to date with all the latest news and events by following us on Facebook and Twitter. If you want to get involved with us at the mag, then please feel free to give us a call or drop us an email. Laters United.

Leilani
This month’s DV8 front cover girl is Bournemouth’s Leilani Dowding. We chatted to the former Miss Great Britain about her love of Bournemouth, living in LA, going to the gym with Bradley Cooper and her new fashion label. At the age of 32 Leilani is now based in LA and has recently starred as a main character in an American TV Reality Show ‘Tough love Miami.’

feel I have let the idea of a family slip so this is definitely a priority for me. How did it feel winning Miss Great Britain? At the time of me being crowned Miss Great Britain it was one of the most amazing moments of my life. What is it like waking up everyday knowing you have been voted as one of FHM's sexiest women in the world? Haha I don’t think about it like that... I have the same body issues, bad hair and bad skin days as every other girl. You visited the troops many times in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Cyprus to boost morale, what were these trips like? Visiting the troops was my favourite part of doing page 3. They were pretty crazy trips as we weren't always in the safest situations but I loved going over there and meeting all the troops. Most famous person you have ever met? Well… Simon Cowell was a judge when I won Miss Great Britain so I adore him for changing my life. I’ve met a lot of A-List actors but they are pretty boring. Dr Dre was one of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever met. I bump into Bradley Cooper at my gym regularly but I just stare. Best Celebrity friend? My best celebrity friend… I don't really hang out with many celebs anymore. I kind of got bored of that. I’m really into just meeting good like-minded people. However, I do see Michael Greco from Eastenders out here a lot, he's really cool and doing so well out here.
S
o, are you missing Bournemouth? I’ve always loved how everything is so close together. Bournemouth is so easy to get around with little traffic. I miss the way of life, how chilled it is. Meeting my friends on the beach, and going out to the New Forest for pub lunches with friends. Do you miss chilling on Bournemouth beach? When I was young I would always go to Bournemouth Pier but nowadays I love lazing around on Sandbanks beach. How often do you come back to Bournemouth? My parents still live in Bournemouth and I own a flat there. I’m usually hanging at my parents and friends’ places on my return. I haven't been out in Bournemouth for about three years so I’m sure everything has changed.
Cavallari from The Hills and Melissa Gorga from Housewives of New Jersey. How would you describe your fashion line? Fun, sexy but still classy. Where can we purchase your fashion range? You can purchase a limited range at www.leilunacollection.co.uk which my sister runs. The full range is on www.leilunacollection.com but takes longer to receive the items as they are all sent from LA. What is your favourite product you have ever designed? My favourite dress is still the long sleeved classic backless dress. It was based on an old dress I had purchased elsewhere which I loved but thought I could make it better by changing it.
You are taking part in a reality show ‘Tough Love Miami’, what has this been like for you? Tough Love was hard. I was very misunderstood by the Americans through the way the programme was pieced together.
Where does your inspiration come from for designing your clothes? Everything I create is stuff that I like to wear. It’s hard to find sexy dresses in LA that don’t look cheap or tacky. I keep the best selling styles and change the fabrics and colours depending on the season or what’s going to be in fashion.
What is your greatest achievement so far? I think so far the one I’m most proud of is starting my clothing line especially as so many celebrities are wearing and loving my dresses. I’ve seen Leann Rimes wearing them, Kristin
What are your future ambitions? My career ambition is to extend my clothing line and my personal ambition is to settle down and start a family. Due to me being so career minded I
12 | DV8BOURNEMOUTH.COM
Best person you have ever partied with? You can’t beat partying with your real friends. Without name dropping wherever you go you see the usual LA party crowd out in LA like Paris Hilton, but they just aren't exciting to me. Do you feel more under pressure to look a certain way living in LA? I don’t feel that much pressure. There is a lot of the fake plastic look going on out here but I’m happy to look different to that. People’s lives are so much healthier here. Everyone goes to the gym and the restaurants are healthy; it’s not hard to stay in shape. People should put that pressure on themselves for health reasons if nothing else. Best place you visited through your modeling career? Cabo Saint Lucas in Mexico. If you could relive your life again, is there anything you would do differently? That’s a hard question! There’s not much I would change. Maybe I’d have eaten better and worked out more in my early twenties. I didn't really bother because I was always booking modeling jobs but since being in LA my lifestyle has become so much healthier. I wish I was in the shape I am now whilst I was modeling. You can find out more about Leilani at www.leilanidowding.net and purchase her clothing line at www.leilunacollection.com

LAYLA TOURH BEAUTY ENTREPRENEUR Age: 30. Where was the concept of 'Exposed Spray Tanning Solutions' born from? I have been in the beauty industry for almost fourteen years now and so I have seen numerous companies come and go. Exposed was born from my drive for business and my interest in spray tans. What are your hopes for Exposed this year? What direction are you looking to take the brand in? I have just completed my Exposed Educator Bootcamp! This comprised training twenty new Exposed Educators from all over the UK to go out and represent the brand by offering courses in spray tanning from beginners to master level. What would you say are the key elements for maintaining a successful business? You definitely need to understand, love and respect your customers. Without them you have no business! You also need to appreciate your team - my staff are amazing. Which platforms are you using to market your company? Professional spray tans can be offered from an authorised JUST THE FACTS Exposed Salon. Exposed is Best thing about currently available from Salons Bournemouth: across the UK and the retail can be purchased via the website or the I love the beach! Facebook page. Especially
Sandbanks. Defining character trait: I’m outgoing this helps to understand different people at every level. The downside to working in beauty: Never having the time to get a spray tan for myself.
Who would you say is your target market? Professionals in the beauty industry such as beauty therapists and salon owners who either want to enter the very lucrative world of spray tanning or convert to Exposed from another brand. The amount of existing spray tanning techs that have converted to Exposed is unbelievable.
Have you got any tips for any other budding entrepreneurs? You have to be prepared to put your absolute all into it and not expect to get a lot back. I started as a salon owner and am now selling my own brand. I am a very lucky girl and I work hard for my success. Photo Credit: www.sambaxterphotography.co.uk

e’ve all heard the term ‘fashion icon’ and one can’t help to wonder how this is achieved and how one becomes a so-called fashion icon? What makes a fashion statement so big that it creates that title? In my line of work, I come across plenty of fabulous dressers - from celebrities I work with, to high editors, but making it onto the top list takes more than a closet full of the latest Balmains and Louboutins. The people chosen have one thing in common: they have affected the way other women dress. You may love them or hate them, but you can't ignore them. To become a fashion icon, you have to know what works and what doesn’t. Of course, you must be willing to use unconventional techniques and take risks. After carefully choosing pieces that are right for you, your next step is to pick a trademark look. With that in mind keep it simple and keep it yours. Follow me @GVfashionstyle.

his month has been so busy with shooting images for Lauren Goodger’s products range - Lauren’s Way. I was the make-up artist for the shoot. The final shots look amazing and will be used for her lashes, fake tan products and hair extension range! May brings us even closer to the Summer and with that comes more revealing outfits and Summery looks. I’ve been experimenting with fake tans to find the best and I have found that Lauren’s Way tanning products are the best. Lauren’s Way tanning products range from gradual tans to instant wash off tans with prices varying from £11.95 to £18.95.

My favourite is the Lauren’s Way Glam Tan (£18.95) because it is easy to apply and an intense professional colour. Wearing false eyelashes can give you a look of sophistication, elegance and even make you appear to be sexier. If you’re a bit afraid of wearing them because you feel that they will overpower your eyes or because you feel that they look too fake then take the time to check out Lauren’s Way lashes. Lauren’s lashes are natural, easy to apply and are suitable for all eye shapes and occasions (£6.95). www.laurensway.com T: @VictoriaMoores.

CATHERINE SABATINA FANTASY AUTHOR, DANCE TEACHER Age: 28. What inspired your dream to be a published author? At the age of twenty-eight, I found out I was dyslexic. This was such a liberating discovery and really urged me to pen my first novel in order to prove to anyone who suffers from dyslexia that it shouldn’t stop you from reaching for the skies. Yes, there are times I find writing difficult, but I have a wacky imagination and luckily the computer gives me the freedom and confidence to transfer the ideas in my head into perfectly written words.
JUST THE FACTS
Best place to read in Bournemouth? Sat on the beach on a sunny day. Your favourite book? ’Labyrinth’ by Kate Mosse and ‘Captain Corelli's Mandolin’ by Louis de Bernieres. Your favourite restaurant? Sal E Pepé in Charminster do the best steak.
How would you best describe the tone of your story writing? My debut novel ‘Sweet Jasmine, Cakes and Magic’ is aimed for anyone aged sixteen and upwards. It is ideal for readers who love their chick-lit and urban fantasy. If you love the Twilight series or Marian Keyes’ work then you will definitely love my work too! I tend to fuse sinister and dark material with light comedy. I am just putting the finishing touches to my sequel novel, so watch this space!
When you’re not busy writing, what do you enjoy doing? As well as always working on enhancing my writing skills, I teach approximately twenty-four exercise classes a week at the Littledown Centre and Stokewood Road, which includes Zumba and Pilates routines. Where can we purchase your debut novel? You can download ‘Sweet Jasmine, Cakes and Magic’ via Kindle from Amazon for £4.99 or £6.99 paperback through Play.com. You can also visit my website www.catherinesabatina.com for further information. Where is your gorgeous outfit from? My dress is from Dolce and Gabbana, and I bought these shoes recently from TK Maxx – they are from the Jessica Simpson range. Do you have any tips for budding writers? I would suggest contacting The London Book Fair’s New Title Showcase. This is a yearly event that enables you to get your name out there! It’s what I did for ‘Sweet Jasmine, Cakes and Magic’ earlier this year. The hope is that a publisher or agent will spot your work.

BOXING Many of us struggle to get fit just for the reason of getting fit. Many of us also get fit to lose weight, that's why it is really important to have goals or something to train for, such as the London marathon, or the Bournemouth Bay Run. Why not train for something different like a white collar boxing fight? You could use it as an excuse to lose weight and get fit while having a goal and a date to train to. You could use it to raise money for your favourite charity, and then at the end you can compete in front of all your mates against a like-minded professional. Participating in a white collar boxing fight is an amazing feeling - you can box at any age from 18 to 50. As long as you have a doctor’s certificate then I will train you for the big day. If you are interested please get in touch via my website, or my Facebook page, or my Twitter page @jotraining. I look forward to hearing from you. • Contact details: www.johnorchardtraining.com or Facebook: John Orchard Training.

AJAY KUMAR THE YOGA GURU
E
very year, thousands of people travel to Mysore, India to study yoga. It is renowned worldwide for its charm, tradition and origin. I have been back to Mysore seven times and was lucky enough to meet an amazing Ashtanga teacher called Ajay Kumar in his Yoga Shala (place of practice) in 2006.
A typical day in Mysore starts by getting up at 5am when the temperature is already 20 degrees! I spend my days practicing Ashtanga at Ajay’s Yoga Shala with about twenty others who have traveled from all corners of the world to share the experience. The locals chant carrying out their early morning pujas or rituals which adds a real mysticism to the air that you will never experience anywhere else. Going back to Mysore for me is like being plugged back into the mains, it gives me a certain energy that I don’t get from anywhere else. I bring this energy back home with me to the classes I teach at Yoga Room. I am delighted to announce that Ajay Kumar is coming to Bournemouth in October 2012 to hold several workshops with us.

THAI TAPAS
HEAVEN
Koh Thai Tapas offers innovative yet classic Thai cuisine of the highest calibre and was awarded Bournemouth's Restaurant of the Year 2010 just 11 months after opening. With a second restaurant now open in Bournemouth town centre DV8 caught up with one of the owners Andrew Lennox for a chat.
DV8: Where did the idea of Koh Thai Tapas stem from? Andrew: We always wanted to create a unique and complete dining experience. Our idea of a 'Thai Tapas' concept fitted brilliantly with our informal dining idea, allowing you to share with friends and family alike. This along with the popularity of Thai food in the UK, made the idea of 'Thai Tapas' a concept that had great possibilities. We have always wanted to develop a brand and chain of restaurants we believed in, allowing us to serve our customers with fantastic food, great service, warm atmosphere and value for money. What do you feel Koh Thai tapas brings to Bournemouth? We feel Koh adds a more relaxed and informal dining experience. We have no specific customer but like to believe we appeal to everyone. We serve our customers how we want to be served, with great food, fantastic service at a reasonable price in a relaxed atmosphere. I think we bring a refreshing change to the Bournemouth scene. How do you feel you compete with other Thai restaurants in the Bournemouth area? We don't really feel that we compete with other restaurants, Thai or otherwise. We are completely different to the restaurants in Bournemouth. If we stick to our ethos, keep serving our customers how we would like to be
44 | DV8BOURNEMOUTH.COM
served, the restaurants will speak for themselves and we can continue to strive to be the leader in our field. Now you have opened the Bournemouth branch, how has this affected the Boscombe Branch? It was a quick process when we opened our Bournemouth Branch and there was quite a bit of excitement and expectation on what we were going to do and whether we could replicate Boscombe. Obviously everyone wanted to see the new site but for all their similarities they are both very different, they both have their loyal customers and there is a friendly rivalry between the two restaurants. They both capitalised well on their assets and Boscombe is certainly holding its own against the new site. Koh is quite community minded, why do you feel this is important? One of our main objectives is to invest in the communities we are in. We believe a community together is a community stronger and this shows especially in Boscombe - the area is slowly getting there and we are proud to be a part of it. In Bournemouth we are on the BID steering group, a scheme to invest money into Bournemouth which has just been voted and approved by

The lounge area at Koh Thai Bournemouth's businesses. This means new investment of over 7 million over the next 5 years. Furthermore, we have invested nearly ÂŁ20,000 in Bournemouth and Boscombe over the last 3 years in community investment, charities and sponsorship. We are passionate about the areas our restaurants are in and will continue to help however we can. What is next for the brand Koh? This year is an exciting year. We will be expanding our outside catering side of the business with our Koh Lounge which we trialled last year to great success. This will include some festivals and one of two brilliant events just being confirmed. We have decking just going through planning for Koh, Poole Hill which is going to bring some great al fresco dining for the summer. A big refurb of Boscombe is underway this month which we are really excited about. With Koh three in the pipeline for the end of the year it should be a challenging and busy year.

The bar Koh Thai Bournemouth Town Centre
What is the long-term dream for Koh Thai? We have always been an ambitious company and we are on course for our brand objectives. A new restaurant this year then another in 2013. The aim is to expand the brand first in the South West and then go national. We are passionate about serving our customers and feel that we have a concept that will really be able to develop into a leading brand and chain. Whilst still maintaining the highest of standards and our complete dining experience. How did you come up with your striking interior design of Koh Thai? With a combined experience of over 40 years in the industry we have picked up a couple of ideas along the way. Drawing on experiences from Thailand, Europe and the Americas we wanted to create a warm atmosphere, something conducive to a truly relaxed dining experience. We have combined ambient lighting, striking murals, old style brick walls with contemporary features and traditional Thai artefacts to create a truly warm and sophisticated dining interior. We like to think it is timeless in an age where fashion and interior design change seasonally. If you could take Koh Thai to another country which would it be? The idea of taking Koh internationally is something we are looking at currently, whilst locations are a closely guarded secret, taking our Thai Tapas concept to areas such as Spain and France are really interesting possibilities. There is a real market for what we do out there and we feel it could be an unbelievable opportunity and a great challenge. Watch this space!
Koh Thai owners Nick Billingham, Jay Hampton and Andrew Lennox.
If you had any advice to new businesses what would it be? Business in the UK is tough, as operators you need be streamlined, forward looking and adaptable. Stability is key, people need to see you as a constant force - both in business to business dealings and with your customers. At Koh we strive to be an honest, respectable and a caring company. This is reflected in our suppliers and brand partners. We only use the best companies and our relationships with brands such a Asahi, Tiger, and Veuve have grown respectively as our business has grown. Best bit of advice? Treat others how you would want to be treated and be humble about what you do. DV8 BOURNEMOUTH.COM | 45
