Physics Degree Sparks Teaching Career for Chien-I Chiang

Growing up in Taiwan, professor Chien-I Chiang always had a keen interest in physics. “Physics has always been my passion, in particular the fundamental aspects of it.” Chiang channeled his passion into a college degree. “I attended National Taiwan University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in physics. After that, I came to California for graduate school, studying theoretical physics.”

Chiang joined DVC San Ramon as an adjunct faculty after receiving his PhD in physics from UC Berkeley. While at UC Berkeley, he became inspired to work with community colleges as a result of helping transfer students. “During my time as a graduate student instructor at Berkeley, I encountered many transfer students, including those who transferred from DVC. I have seen how community college education helps students transform and prepare for their life at four-year universities and beyond. Being part of this transformational process has been a rewarding experience for me and continues to be the main motivation for me to teach at DVC.”

“As the first full-time physics faculty at the San Ramon campus, my main task is to help grow the physics program.” To begin, Chiang plans to offer a calculus-based introductory physics sequence (PHYS-130, 230 and 231) in the near future.

When asked what inspires him about teaching, Chiang says that it’s observing his students’ journeys. “I have seen many young people trying their very best to thrive and overcome difficulties in their lives. Learning about the experience of these students not only makes me feel humble but also reminds me of the importance of our job as teachers to support our students.”

For anyone considering college, Chiang recommends DVC no matter what stage of life you are in. He has taught students out of high school as well as parents and working adults looking for a career change. “DVC provides many great opportunities and support to our students. The San Ramon campus particularly has a small but beautiful campus that fosters an environment of close interactions between students, faculty, and staff.”

Student Success

The DVC Early Childhood Education Program Gives Luis Gonzalez Room to Play

early schooling. I remember the warm teachers, the smell of the paint materials and the moments of play,” said Luis Gonzalez, a student enrolled in the early childhood education (ECE) program at DVC.

Early childhood education (ECE) is a field that historically has attracted more female-identifying students. But as with many other careers, this trend is changing. Just ask Luis Gonzalez, an early childhood education program student at DVC. “Within the ECE program, I received the associate teacher certificate, and plan to transfer to obtain my bachelor’s degree in early childhood education,” said Gonzalez.

According to Paul Pitner, the department chair for the early childhood education program at DVC, “There has definitely been an increase in the number of male and non-binary students taking the beginning child development courses.” DVC’s ECE program prepares students for careers working with young children and families. “Our certificates align with the California Child Development Permit, a requirement for employment in publicly funded early childhood education programs and it meets the requirements for several permit levels: associate teacher, teacher, master teacher and site supervisor,” said Pitner.

Students can also pursue an associate degree in early childhood education and prepare for transfer to obtain a bachelor’s degree for career advancement, like Gonzalez. “DVC prepared me very well to enter the field. I learned how to craft lesson plans tailored to students’ interests. And I also developed a greater understanding of how a child’s success depends on the cooperation between parents, the school, and the child’s environment,” said Gonzalez.

Job outlook

“In California, the average salary for early childhood education workers is $42,117 (Salary.com). Demand for T-K and K-12 teachers is enormous. Many school districts are in extreme need for teachers and are offering bonuses for new hires,” said Pitner.

And job growth is only projected to grow from here. “The outlook for ECE teachers is extremely good - demand for teachers is much higher than availability. Wages have significantly increased in the last few years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this industry is expected to grow 25 percent through 2030.”

This in-demand field opens up opportunities for all students and according to Pitner, “often the income capacity of a career path impacts the interest of male-identifying students in a field of study, but as wages increase, there is now more gender equity in the field.”

Gonzalez has also benefited from the high demand for early childhood education professionals. “I work full-time at Kidango. I open the center, so I’m there bright and early setting things up to greet our early risers. Kidango as an organization has been really good to me. I started off as a teacher’s aide and now I’m an associate teacher. I’ve received raises and bonuses almost every year,” said Gonzalez.
