Hermanus has been a favourite holiday spot since the 1820s when Hermanus Pieters, a teacher and shepherd at Boontjieskraal farm near Caledon, brought his sheep and cattle down to the coast in search of summer grazing. One can only imagine the spectacular sight that greeted him as he looked down on the bay from the top of the mountains!
Making his way down to the shoreline, Hermanus Pieters discovered a fresh water spring on the edge of the cliffs where he camped with his lock for several months. On his return to the farm after the summer, news of his discovery soon spread and it wasn’t long before more farmers from the Overberg district made the annual seasonal trek to the sea with wagons, wives, livestock and children in tow. Since then the reputation of Hermanus as a holiday destination has spread far and wide due to its unspoilt natural beauty and healthy “Champagne air”. No longer a sleepy ishing village, the town has become the lively centre of markets and festivals, restaurants and coffee shops, art galleries and book stores, and various specialty shops and businesses. Apart from being a world-renowned destination for whalewatching, there is more for visitors to enjoy in Hermanus today than ever before – pristine beaches, nature reserves, whale, shark and eco tours, fynbos hiking trails, an internationally acclaimed wine route, adventure activities and sports, excellent restaurants and a vibrant art scene. The town has a colourful and intriguing history and is illed with interesting individuals, both newcomers and old-timers, who are friendly and accessible, and eager to share their love of Hermanus with others. If you are a visitor to our town and in need of advice, directions or suggestions, the locals are often the best source of knowledge and assistance. Our residents’ strong sense of community is inding expression this festive season in the ASK ME, I’M LOCAL campaign, an initiative of Hermanus Tourism that is being developed to bring residents of Hermanus even closer, support local business, reinforce a pride in our town and motivate individuals who are eager to assist visitors. Anyone who wants to be an ambassador of our town can purchase their yellow badge with the words ASK ME, I’M LOCAL from the tourism ofice at a nominal cost of only R10. This initiative aims to illustrate cohesiveness, support and helpfulness. It is a way of making visitors feel welcome and also points to an environment that is tourist friendly. To extend the campaign visitors are also asked to share photos and memories of their visit to Hermanus on social media by tagging messages and images with the hash tag #myhermanus. The hashtag competition is a way for visitors and residents to promote our wonderful town by creating a conversation about that special something that epitomises Hermanus for them. This could be the iconic Whale Crier, the Walker Bay seascapes, or the Hermanus FynArts Sculptures on the Cliff Path. The best images will stand a chance to win a monthly prize.
And speaking of Hermanus FynArts, this home-grown festival that is a unique celebration of the best of South African arts will be back next year from 10-19 June with an even more exciting programme. One of the innovations for FynArts 2016 comes in the form of Gift Vouchers which will be available for purchase at the Tourism Bureau in the Old Station Building and at the Info Kiosk at the Old Harbour from 1 December until 30 April 2016. Mary Faure, Festival Director, says “A voucher for FynArts 2016 makes an ideal gift and with the wide variety of items on the programme for next year, vouchers can be purchased at early bird discounted prices for types of events to meet all tastes. These events include workshops, talks, performances, food & wine, ilms, exhibitions, demonstrations and children’s programmes. Once ticket sales have commenced, by early April, the voucher can be redeemed for speciic items on the programme, either in person at the Tourism Ofices or by phone, until 30 April.” The FynArts website is being updated and the 2016 Programme will be gradually released from the beginning of December. Until then, visitors will experience no shortage of arts and culture in Hermanus. Enjoy the amazing range of ine art, sculptures and ceramics produced by our local artists by strolling the art galleries in town and the Sculpture on the Cliffs outdoor exhibition at Gearing's Point.
Another popular event that is not to be missed by art lovers, is the Hermanus First Fridays Artwalk (HFF), another initiative from Hermanus Tourism which sees these galleries stay open until 9pm on the irst Friday of every month. The next HFF will take place on 1 January 2016 (see the map on page 4). Not only have several new galleries opened their doors this year, but Walker Bay Art Gallery & Framery has extended its premises in Main Road with additional exhibition space and a bistro. Flavourz Food and Wine Bistro is run by the gallery owner Francois Grobbelaar’s wife Christine and her partner Yolanda Alazraku, previously from Daily Bread in Voëlklip. It forms a natural extension of the gallery and makes use of the delightful courtyard garden where visitors can enjoy coffee, wine and light lunches surrounded by beautiful artworks, verdure and the tranquil sounds of a water feature. They will be open 7 days a week during season. Details on other festivities and festive events taking place in and around Hermanus this holiday season can be found in our Events Diary on page 16 & 17. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

stroll past The Mission’s House Gallery in De Villiers Street in Onrus immediately arouses interest – and it is indeed a very special place. Whether you’d like to immerse yourself in the wonderful collection of artworks on exhibit, or need that special artwork expertly framed, or are looking for that special Christmas gift or decoration, or would simply like to enjoy the atmosphere of this historic landmark, you will receive a warm welcome from owner Glenda Pope and her daughter Braelea.
Once you’ve opened the garden gate and passed through the door you will ind yourself among a treasure trove of beautiful things, with a surprise tucked around every corner in the charming nooks and crannies of this historic old home steeped in the artistic history of the area. The Pope family’s ties to Hermanus go back four generations, when Braelea Pope’s great-grandparents bought a plot in Voëlklip where they built their holiday home and later spent their retirement. Fast-forwarding two generations brings us to the other side of Hermanus, to what was then the sleepy village of Onrus, where Braelea’s parents, Michael and Glenda Pope, purchased a dilapidated old house close to the sea in 1980.
Glenda worked at the Onrus Gallery for 13 years when it was still situated in Van Blommenstein Street, before opening her own art gallery and framing workshop at home, which she named The Mission’s House Gallery. Focusing on selected works by both established and up-and-coming local artists, the gallery features paintings, sculptures, ceramics and a variety of hand-crafted items that meet Glenda’s exacting standards of dedication and commitment. The awe-inspiring collection includes works by Joshua Miles, Weyers du Toit, Charles van der Merwe, Angela Key, Hennie
Glenda was pregnant with Braelea at the time and her older brother Bevan was ive years old. The property that had charmed their parents was a modest sandstone cottage built by Moravian missionaries from Genadendal in 1820 and used by the church as a holiday home. Interestingly, it was the same missionaries who also managed the leper colony established by the Cape government in a secluded valley which they named Hemel-en-Aarde, before the colony was moved to Robben Island in 1846. “The house was in a terrible condition,” says Glenda, “but we loved the fact that it had retained all its original features and character.” With a ine arts degree and a background in lecturing and teaching art, Glenda soon befriended members of the Onrus artists’ colony such as Marjorie Wallace, Gregoire Boonzaaier, Tertia Knaap, Sylvia Smith, Audrey Fourie, Angela Key, and Hennie Niemann senior and junior. Prominent authors who also visited regularly included Uys Krige, Jan Rabie, Ingrid Jonker, Jack Cope, Breyten Breytenbach, Andre P. Brink and Etienne le Roux. Along with accommodating their growing family, the Pope’s home became the artistic hub where these legendary writers, poets and artists gathered to socialise and enjoy each other’s company.

Niemann jr, Sally Dove, Lize van der Walt, Bill Davis and David Clarke-Brown. The subject matter is wide and varies, and includes land and seascapes, portraits, still lives, wildlife and igure drawings, most of which are inspired by the local environment. This historic old building has been an integral part of the artistic heritage of Onrus for more than 35 years and it is this legacy that the family is committed to celebrating and safeguarding for many years to come. In 2014, after the death of her sister Lee, Glenda was struggling to manage on her own and was joined by her daughter Braelea who had returned to her roots after spending several years in the wine industry in the Cape and in France. Braelea’s vision and energy has inspired this mother-and-daughter team to rejuvenate and re-invent the gallery as a unique destination. “The house had so much potential to be utilised in a way that allows the public to enjoy it as much as we do,” says Braelea. While Glenda continues to provide the professional framing service she is renowned for, and the gallery continues to exhibit various collections of artworks, Braelea has extended their offering with an exclusive selection of designer clothing and knitwear, jewellery, crockery and other hand-crafted accessories and décor items. Visitors are invited to linger and browse, or enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea and home-baked biscuits in the shady courtyard garden.

Elsabé and her husband, Reinder, took over the farm in April this year and set about transforming it into not only a guest farm with 6 self-catering cottages (of which 3 are family cottages) and 13 large en-suite rooms, but also a culinary destination of note.
According to Elsabé the Manor House will be offering a ‘Let’s Braai’ Sunday buffet during the season. “As with everything we do, it is not your stock standard braai, but rather a celebration of this favourite South African past-time with prime fillets and boerewors skewers with a variety of salads and side dishes. We are also looking forward to harvesting most ingredients from our newly planted vegetable garden to ensure the freshest ingredients on every plate, and to complement our food by stocking most Overberg wines.”

DINING
by Hedda Mittner
S
ituated on the waterfront adjacent to the Old Harbour, Bientang’s Cave has been a landmark destination for visitors to Hermanus as well as a favourite among the locals for decades. Carved into the high rock face of the shoreline, this popular seafood restaurant enjoys a location that is probably unique in the world – and as close to the sea as one can possibly get. With the interior of the restaurant literally inside a cave, and the outside seating and bar area spilling onto the rocks, both the setting and the food have been thrilling diners for many years –especially when their meal is interrupted by the sight of frolicking dolphins or a breaching whale just meters from their table. According to legend, the name “Bientang” belonged to the last Koi Strandloper to have lived in this ancient cave at the turn of the nineteenth century. Protected from the elements and nourished by an endless supply of fresh seafood, Bientang also had access to the fresh-water stream that still runs underneath the staircase leading down to the restaurant. Bientang’s Cave has been a labour of love for Giangi Negra for the past 21 years. He prefers to refer to himself not as the owner but as the custodian of this very special place. How he found it in the first place is an interesting story which makes one believe that fate surely had a hand in steering him towards his destiny. Giangi arrived here from Johannesburg at the end of 1994 following a serious motorcycle accident that necessitated multiple operations. “Unable to work for prolonged periods, I became introspective and took stock of my life,” Giangi reminisces. Yearning to live by the sea, he embarked on a journey down the coast, travelling in his 4x4 bakkie and sleeping on the beach. “I was on a quest,” he says. In Gansbaai he met up with Isak Lesch, who was the previous coowner of Bientang’s Cave with partner Sparks Esterhuysen. They told Giangi they were looking to sell the restaurant and invited him to Hermanus. “I couldn’t believe this place when I first saw it,” says Giangi with a smile. “I could hardly imagine coming to work here every day.” With the deal concluded, Giangi settled permanently in Hermanus and Bientang’s Cave became his life. “Hermanus was a different place back in 1994,” he says. “It was just a sleepy hollow that didn’t
cater for visitors or tourists at all.” Determined to change that, Giangi set about making improvements to the restaurant and the surrounding waterfront area. His efforts included a new kitchen, bathroom facilities and replacing part of the cave’s roof to let in more light, as well as upgrading the parking area above the restaurant. A few years later, following a violent storm that caused considerable damage, he also extended the deck and the outside seating area on the rocks. It comes as no surprise that Bientang’s Cave was showered with awards at the Restaurant Association of South Africa’s prestigious RASA Rosetta Awards gala dinner in Johannesburg last month. Not only was Bientang’s Cave the winner in the category Best Alternative / International Restaurant in South Africa 2015, but they also received the RASA Rosetta Award of Service and Appreciation (for serving the South African restaurant industry for more than 20 years), the RASA Rosetta Award of Service Excellence (the highest honours for service excellence and overall contribution to the upliftment of the restaurant industry) as well as being one of the runners-up for the RASA Rosetta Best Restaurant in South Africa 2015 Award. “It was all quite overwhelming,” says Giangi. “This is a unique restaurant and it’s great to receive this kind of recognition.” He insists however that Bientang’s awards belong equally to his partner Sylvia Taylor and to each and every one of their staff members, because running a restaurant is a joint effort. “A visit to Bientang’s is about more than just food,” says Giangi. “It’s an experience, an adventure.” His passion for nature conservation is evident when he talks about Piet se Klip, the rock formation in front of Bientang’s Cave. He considers himself the custodian not only of the whales and other marine life that visit our shores, but also the rich biodiversity of our coastal bird life. Piet se Klip is often visited by Cormorants, Black Oystercatchers and Cape Otters, and Giangi urges visitors to enjoy the sight without disturbing them. Bientang’s Cave is open daily from 11:00 – 16:00, and will also be open for special functions in the evening during the holiday season. Call 028 312 3454 to book your table.

he latest addition to the Bientang’s team is head chef Carl Penn, who is working his magic in the kitchen in preparation of the holiday season ahead.
T
With extensive experience gained at acclaimed restaurants in the UK as well as the Cape, Carl’s CV makes for jaw-dropping reading and includes executive chef positions at Simon’s Restaurant at Groot Constantia, Carne-SA and 95 Keerom in Cape Town and Blues Restaurant in Camp’s Bay. Carl graciously agreed to share a few recipes with our readers which are simple, healthy and delicious, and easy to prepare. These dishes are typical of what diners can expect from Bientang’s Cave this season. “The emphasis is on seafood but we also serve hamburgers, ribs, steaks, vegetarian options and various platters,” says Carl. “I en-
This sounds intimidating but is really simple to make and the rewards are amazing. It takes 2 day to cure the salmon so planning ahead is the name of the game here.
This is so quick and easy and bursting with flavor. We tried it as a special and may just throw it on the menu for summer as it really ticks all the boxes as a summer starter. Serves 4 Ingredients 600g Halloumi cheese 100g rocket 120g sundried tomatoes in olive oil 2 lemons 2 cloves garlic, crushed 100ml olive oil
fillet
Carl is the epitome of calm and control among the mid-day rush at Bientang’s Cave. It is clear that his experience extends beyond the kitchen and that his many years of managing restaurants, developing menus and establishing new restaurants from scratch will be a huge asset to Bientang’s Cave. On his part, Carl is delighted to make Hermanus his new home. “Hermanus has everything that Cape Town has – the sea, mountains, winelands, excellent restaurants – while also being more accessible. Everything you could possibly wish for is right on your doorstep.”
Dressing 150 ml good quality mayonnaise 1 tbsp whole grain mustard 1 tbsp finely chopped dill 50ml milk
Ingredients 400g Norwegian Salmon deboned and skin on 100g rock salt 40g sugar 1 large beetroot 3 sprigs of dill 100g wild rocket 1 punnet blueberries 2 x 100g plain chevin logs 1 lemon
joy Mediterranean food which is honest and down-to-earth. It fits in well with the rustic style of Bientang’s Cave which is not fine dining but rather focuses on simplicity, freshness and locally sourced quality produce.”
Method 1. Combine salt, sugar, dill and chopped raw beetroot in a blender and mix till fine. 2. On a table create a “blanket” of cling wrap longer than the salmon fillet and wide enough to wrap over and seal.
2 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper
3. Place some of the beetroot mix on the cling wrap. Place the fillet on top of the mix and then generously coat with the remainder. Wrap the coated fillet in the cling wrap, place in a container and refrigerate for no less than 48 – 72 hours.
6. Arrange the slices on a plate and garnish with fresh blue berries, sliced chevin and seasoned and dressed rocket.
4. After curing remove from the fridge and unwrap and rinse the fillet clean before patting dry with paper towel.
8. Again loads of lemon wedges are not amiss with this dish but you will find that the blueberries add all the freshness you need for this summer starter.
5. With a sharp knife thinly slice the fillet into 2-3 mm slices.
grill the cheese in a non-stick griddle pan over medium to high heat for about a minute and a half each side till soft.
Method 1. Slice the halloumi into 5 mm slices. 2. Combine the olive oil, juice of 1 lemon, smoked paprika and garlic in a shallow dish. Add the sliced cheese and let it marinate for an hour. 3. Wash the rocket. Finely slice the sundried tomato, reserving the oil. 4. Once salad ingredients are ready
5. Divide the slices onto 4 plates and top with the rocket and tomato. Drizzle over the sundried tomato oil and serve with a large lemon wedge. Note: Serve immediately as the cheese can become rubbery on cooling. For extra depth in the dish drizzle with a balsamic reduction.
Everyone loves the combination of prawn and avo, which I have paired with a Caesar salad. We are introducing a classic Caesar salad onto our menu for summer. The dressing is rich and garlicky and a good squeeze of lemon brings this salad to life.
Caesar dressing 1 cup good quality mayonnaise 1 tsp anchovy fillets 2 tbsp Grated parmesan cheese 1 clove fresh garlic Lemon juice to taste Salt and Black pepper to taste
2. I use whole prawns and blanch them in salted water for about 2 minutes then refresh immediately in ice water to halt the cooking process. Once cold peel and set aside.

Method
Ingredients
1. For the dressing blend all the ingredients in a bowl with a stick blender; if you find it too thick feel free to loosen it up with a little milk. I like it thick as it sticks to the lettuce better.
3. For the croutons I use stale ciabatta, sliced thin and toasted under the grill with a drizzle of olive oil. Remove once golden turning frequently to ensure they don’t burn. While still hot rub each crouton with a peeled garlic clove. Try not to eat them all.
120g Cos lettuce leaves 1 Avocado 8 Prawns (16/20 size) Ciabatta croutons Lemon
7. Combine all the dressing ingredients and either serve on the side or drizzle over your complete dish.
4. I like to slice the avo length ways and have long slivers in the salad. I always season and dress the avo prior to adding it to the salad to add flavor and prevent browning. 5. To assemble add all the ingredients except the avo, croutons and dressing to a bowl and toss with about 2 tablespoons of the dressing to coat. 6. Add the croutons and avo last and serve with extra dressing on the side and loads of lemon wedges.

MARKETS

A
mong the many attractions of Hermanus the local markets hold a very special place. There are quite a few to choose from this holiday season, from Onrus and Hermanus to Stanford, each with its own character and specialties. Whatever your choice you will not be disappointed as each market offers a captivating and unique experience. One of the most popular markets among local residents is the Hermanus Country Market, a feel-good place with a lot of soul. There are few places where the community spirit of our town is more in evidence than at the Hermanus Country Market, where residents are to be found year-round on a Saturday morning, supporting the traders with their fresh produce and home-grown arts and crafts. Here you will find everything from fresh organic produce to home-made delicacies, artisan breads, probiotic yoghurts, hand-made cheeses and happy hen eggs, as well as a variety of arts and crafts that includes clothing, jewellery and home décor items. Added to the mix are plants and herbs, and all things that are good for your health and happiness. All the traders hail from the Overstrand, giving the market a truly local flavour. This is one of the best destinations if you are looking for original and quirky Christmas gifts, and it sure beats shopping in the overcrowded shops in town over the festive period. And there’s a lot more to the Hermanus Country Market than just shopping; people flock here on a regular basis to mingle and meet up with family and friends, listen to the music and enjoy the bounty of freshly brewed coffee, homebaked country bread, cakes and other treats or linger over a leisurely lunch with a bottle of local wine or craft beer. Started nine years ago by Lisa van Coppenhagen with 15 traders selling home-made produce, the Hermanus Country Market has grown to 70 traders with crafters joining in the fun. “Markets have been going since Biblical times,” says Lisa. “They seem to have a magical appeal to many who wish to engage with their community, and to be able to look the person who makes the products they enjoy in the eye. It’s also about knowing where their food is coming from, what is in it and how it was made. It’s hard to touch a soul in a polystyrene package.” Lisa says the Hermanus Country Market traders are a very special group of people. “Every Saturday, from sunrise, one can hear the tinkle of laughter and feel the hugs of love. This sort of start to one's day can be such a tonic in the hurly-burly of life and has become so addictive that many feel sad when they miss a market day.” The motto of the Hermanus Country Market is ‘We love what we do’ and each trader’s
passion is apparent in their creations. But Lisa says the success of the market is largely due to the kind, loyal and caring residents of Hermanus who have supported them in so many ways over the years and become firm friends with the traders. “We are certainly blessed to have such special people who have kept this market going through thick and thin, rain and wind, mud and flood. We would like to salute you all for allowing us to continuously bring out the best from our workshops and kitchens, for always supporting and inspiring us to continuously create quality products. It is testimony to the Overberg's uniqueness that so many creative bakers, foodies, artisans, creators, makers, movers and shakers are all living here and can all be found in one place every week. We can’t wait to welcome all the visitors and our local supporters’ extended families to the market this season.” The Hermanus Country Market trades every Saturday morning from 08:00-13:00, and during the holiday season from 9 December – 20 January the Summer Night Markets take place every Wednesday from 17:00-19:00. Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome. There is also a fun go-kart race track adjacent to the market to keep the kids occupied. As a special treat, Santa will be visiting the market on 16 December, and if you’d like your child to receive a gift, you can purchase a R50 ticket for the gift packet at the market. Location: Fairways Avenue, between Bosko and the Hermanus Cricket Grounds.
Other local markets to choose from this festive season include: Hermanuspietersfontein Food & Wine Market Another popular meeting place among the locals, the Hermanuspietersfontein Food & Wine Market celebrated its 10th birthday this year. H
ermanus has experienced unprecedented development and its population has expanded exponentially to almost double in the last decade. Everyone, it seems, wants to live in Hermanus. So what is happening in the local property market, and what are the current trends among home buyers? Village Explorer posed this question to several leading property professionals in town and this is what they had to say.
Evan Rautenbach, principal of AIDA Hermanus, says there is a high demand for properties in Hermanus, especially those under R3 million, and also in the R7 – 10 million bracket which appeals to foreign buyers. Smallholdings are also selling well but farms less so. “Most of our buyers are looking to settle here permanently and our biggest challenge is a shortage of stock.”
“Property sales are up from last year as well as the year before,” says Dean Meijer, principal of Chas Everitt Whale Coast, which includes the areas of Hermanus, Onrus and Kleinmond. “All our areas are performing well, and the high demand for properties under R1.5 million means increased activity in areas such as Sandbaai and Onrus.”
Further afield in the Gansbaai area, Guthrie & Theron agent Johann Dippenaar says at least half of his clients come from other areas in the Western Cape, and the rest from elsewhere in the country. “This area is becoming more well known, and appeals to people who want a more peaceful life close to nature and away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas.” A large proportion of sales in the area are vacant erven, where buyers later build holiday or retirement homes.
Dean adds that rising interest rates might have a negative effect on the property market in the near future. “However, the excellence of local government and service delivery in the Overstrand means that it will always be a sought-after place to live. We are no longer only dealing with people who want to retire in Hermanus. Many of our clients are semigrating from up north, even if it means having to commute for work. While many other small towns are deteriorating, the growth and stability of our region is a great attraction. Let’s face it – we live in paradise!”
Pat McLachlan, principal of Keller Williams Hermanus, whose area of operation stretches from Rooi Els to Pearly Beach, says they too have had a very good year. “Properties under R1.5 million have become very scarce and the result is that affordable homes sell fast. It also motivates buyers to look at other areas as properties in Hermanus are mostly priced above R2 million. Vacant erven are equally scarce in Hermanus, causing buyers to look at surrounding areas such as Gansbaai and Kleinmond.”

20 Vacant erven are equally scarce in Hermanus, causing buyers to look at surrounding areas such as Gansbaai and Kleinmond.” Coastal property has consistently remained a good investment, says Pat. “The saying goes: Buy land at the sea – they have stopped making it!” Cornel Janse van Vuuren, principal of RealNet Hermanus, which includes the areas of Sandbaai and Onrus, agrees that they have many buyers and not enough stock. “Properties over R2 million are not moving that fast, but when we get well-priced properties between R1 and 2 million, they are sold within a month.” Cornel also says that many of their buyers are newcomers from metropolitan areas who are attracted to the lifestyle of Hermanus. “The average age of our buyers is now much younger –between 30 and 55 years,” she says. “Many of them have school-going children and the establishment of Curro Private School in Sandbaai is a great advantage.” Cornel is cautious about the interest rate, though, and believes that it will put extra pressure especially on firsttime buyers who have mortgage bonds of between 90 and 100%. Hannelie van Rooyen has been a property agent with Guthrie & Theron for many years. She agrees that homes between R1.2 and R1.5 million are almost impossible to find, and that prices in the Hermanus area start from R1.8 million and up. Most of her clients are a few years from retirement and are looking to relocate. “Many of them are professionals in the corporate world from Gauteng and Kwa-ZulaNatal, who don’t want to remain there after retirement. They are attracted to Hermanus because it is a beautiful, clean town with an efficient municipality and service delivery.” These retired professionals are a great asset to Hermanus, says Hannelie, because they don’t just sit back after retirement. “They get involved in community projects, organisations
and charities and the town benefits from their knowledge and expertise.” Deon and Aurelia Esterhuyse from AIDA Onrus have been selling property in the area for two decades and according to them it is now very much a seller’s market. “There is a great demand for properties under R2million and very little stock, so when they come onto the market these properties sell very quickly. Overall 2015 has been an excellent year for us and sales in October and November exceeded all expectations.” While they sold many holiday homes in the past, the Esterhuyses say many of their clients are now settling permanently in the area. They include younger professionals who are fleeing from the cities with their families to enjoy a healthier and safer environment, as well as older people who are preparing for retirement. “Houses and apartments in Negester, the high quality retirement estate for fifty-plussers in Onrus, are in high demand and selling quickly,” says Deon. According to Flick du Toit from RedZ in Onrus, the local property market is alive and well. “The only problem is a shortage of stock, especially vacant erven,” she says. “Most of my clients are from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and they are looking for property up to R3million. These buyers are looking for a better quality lifestyle and security.” Flick is another veteran agent who has been in the property business for over 30 years. Whereas previously most buyers were looking for either holiday or retirement homes, she says her clients now include younger people with school-going children who are settling in the area. “Onrus is popular because of its close proximity to the town centre and schools, while retaining its small town character and sense of community. The residents are a very friendly bunch who all support each other and immediately make newcomers feel welcome.”
