From the President Dear Angus Friends & Breeders: What a great year to be in the Angus business. All cattle are setting record prices, and Angus genetics are in the greatest demand of any breed. Quality Angus females are sought after by both commercial and purebred breeders because they know Angus are what their customers demand. Angus bulls continue to lead the way as the most versatile genetics in the beef industry. They do all the major things right for the commercial cowman. Now is the time to promote your herd and continue to create demand for Anus genetics. The Ohio Angus Association is here to help you as an Angus breeder. We can assist you with promotion and marketing of your herd. Please take advantage of opportunities like the Ohio Beef Expo, the Ohio Angus Field day, and the annual meeting and banquet to build on the network of Angus breeders within Ohio. The staff, officers, and directors of the Ohio Angus Association are here to assist you in any way possible. If you have questions or suggestions on what we can do for you as a breeder, please give us a call. We are here to help you. Finally, I would like to welcome Dan Wells as the new Secretary/ Fieldman for the Ohio Angus Association. Dan brings a wealth of experience to the jobs. Get to know Dan and take advantage of what he and the association can do for you. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Al Gahler for his years of service. Al always served with dedication, passion, and only with the best interest of the breed in mind. Thanks Al.
Sincerely, Dave Felumlee President, Ohio Angus Association

Message from Jim Rentz Board member, American Angus Association The current status of the Angus business is at an all time high for both value and demand. From all indications, the outlook for the entire beef business looks extremely positive for the next few years. With the Angus breed being the leader in the industry, are you keeping up with the programs being offered by the American Angus Association? Most herds are weighing calves at birth and weaning to receive EPD’s, but are you either ultra-sounding or using the DNA test from Igenity or Pfizer to complete the EPD information for carcass and $ values? Now that CAB and Angus Genetic, Inc. have come out with the new DNA test GeneMax for commercial herds using registered Angus sires, it is even more important for you as a registered Angus breeder to offer bull buyers as much information as possible. The technology is here to improve your herds, so take advantage by using it. The Angus Foundation is a very important ingredient to the betterment of the Angus breed through their scholarship and research programs. Over $ 264,000 went to 109 scholarship winners this past year. Congratulations to two of our Ohio Juniors, Bailey Harsh and Lindsy Grimes on receiving awards from the CAB Colvin scholarship. The Ohio Juniors are part of the three states hosting the 2012 National Junior Show that will be held in Louisville in July. Take time and attend this major event, as it will give you a better understanding as to what these young people mean to the future of the Angus breed. The “I am Angus” shows on RFD-TV continues to grow in popularity with a steady increase of viewers. The “Angus Report” on the internet, along with the Angus Journal and Beef Bulletin all add to promoting the breed and keeping the Angus world up-to-date with information and current events. If you need help or want more information regarding AAA programs, contact your Regional Manager or the American Angus Association office and they will gladly assist you. It is a pleasure representing you on the National Board and I am also available if I can be of any assistance. Sincerely, Jim Rentz 419-678-2779 james.rentz@yahoo.com

Secretary’s Corner Fellow Angus Breeders, I will be enjoying several bittersweet moments
in the coming weeks as I perform my final tasks for the Ohio Angus Association, this being one of them as my final column and final directory as editor. As I reflect back over the last 5 years, it has been an amazing journey that has created many great memories, and even greater friendships within the Angus circles in Ohio and beyond. When I began as the Secretary/fieldman, I was a county extension agent in Fairfield County, single, living in a room at my brother’s bachelor pad in a suburban housing development! While I enjoyed the county, the work, and the people, I longed to be back on a farm, of my own, with a family of my own. Little did I know that one of my regular clients at the Extension office, whose kids I watched grow and mature through 4-H, and who became a great friend, would soon be my new boss, as Doug Majors took the reigns as President just as I began as Secretary. My acceptance of the Ohio Angus position was the first step in realizing the aforementioned dream - giving me at least part time work so I could move home to the family farm, expand my cow herd and role in the family grain and hay operation, and start a family of my own. Susie and I were married that same year, and I found additional work as an Organization Director for the Ohio Farm Bureau. The time flew by quickly as I learned a whole new set of computer skills that are still evolving, learned every back road in Ohio, and somehow even found, near the end of the rainbow and way past where the sidewalk ends and cell phones work, places like Ridgeview Angus, Pine Hill Farm, Bidwell OH, and a mile long lane to nowhere at Claylick Run Farm where I called many nights home in my camper during sale (hunting) season! (Thanks Dave!) At those places and many more I found not only great cattle, but great people, and came to realize what a great asset Ohio and its breeders are to the purebred industry and Angus business. Susie will certainly attest to that statement as well, making a few friends of her own along the way and listening to me swap household stories and make friends over the phone in my almost daily conversations with each of our Presidents along the way - John, Doug, Bob, and Dave. Not long after some of those on-the-road discoveries, I had news for those frequent conversations as Susie and I made a discovery of our own - parenthood! Our hopes and prayers for a family were answered three times at once and here I am today, turning the reigns of a great team and organization over so I can spend more time with my 3 new conversationalists - Lilly, Addison, and Griffin. It has been a lot of fun, a pleasure serving the Ohio Angus members, and, I have enjoyed working with newly hired Secretary, Dan Wells, through the transition in February and March. The board has hired a very capable, hardworking, and knowledgeable individual I now look forward to watching Dan further evolve this job and utilize his well-polished skill set to lead the organization and its members into a very bright future for the Angus business in Ohio. I also look forward to keeping the many friends I’ve made as my family operation continues to raise, show, and market Angus cattle. Speaking of marketing cattle, demand looks to be great, please be sure to mark your calendars for our newly formed “Best of Both Worlds” sale to be held November 17 at Claylick Run Sale Facility in Newark, and either consign a few head or show up to buy a few and support this exciting joint venture between the Ohio Angus Association and the Ohio Simmental Association! Sincerely, Executive Secretary/Fieldman 73
New Secretary / Fieldman
The Ohio Angus Association is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Dan Wells, of Chillicothe, Ohio as the new Executive Secretary / Fieldman. Dan brings with him an extensive background, knowledge, and awareness of the Angus breed, its people, and events, in Ohio and beyond. Raised on a Registered Angus farm outside Chillicothe, Dan grew up showing steers and Angus heifers at the county fair and occasionally at the Ohio Angus Preview Show. Dan attended The Ohio State University, where he earned his B.S. in Agriculture, studying Animal Science and Ag Business. While there, he competed as a member of the 2004 OSU Livestock Judging Team, claiming High Individual Overall at the 2004 All-East Livestock Evaluation Contest. After college, Dan accepted the position of Executive Director of the Virginia Angus Association. During his time in Virginia, he oversaw the day to day operations of the association, planned their many events and activities, ran their sale management operation - Virginia Sales Services, and launched their graphical design and layout service, working directly with many Angus breeders and businesses in the Mid-Atlantic region. In the spring of 2008, Dan returned to his family farm in Ohio after accepting the opportunity to work for Cotton & Associates, the leading Angus Marketing and Sale Management firm in the country. Dan worked closely with Larry Cotton and his staff for nearly four years, producing marketing and promotional items including sale catalogs and advertisements, and assisting in the execution of production sales for their clientele. Today, Dan still resides on the family farm in Chillicothe, with wife Mallorey and two-year-old son Garrett. Dan and his father, Ray, own and operate Wells Livestock, a purebred Angus seedstock operation, and Dan also owns and operates Wells Livestock Services, offering complete livestock marketing services, and equipment sales. When asked about his new position, Wells responded, “With a young family, my own business Wells Livestock Services continuing to grow and develop as well as the desire to expand our family’s Angus operation, taking such a position would allow me to be home more and devote more time to each.” The Ohio Angus Association board of directors is confident in Dan’s background and abilities, and when asked how he feels about working exclusively for his home state Association, Wells added, “My work experience gave me the opportunity to work directly with many of the top Angus operations in the country and establish a network of contacts within the Angus breed, which will certainly benefit the Ohio Association and its members, who I am anxious to work for and look forward to meeting if I don’t already know them.” Dan began his work with the Ohio Angus Association February 1, and will work concurrently with retiring Secretary/Fieldman Allen Gahler through the Ohio Beef Expo in March. Please take the time to introduce yourself to Dan at the Beef Expo or an upcoming sale, or drop him a note and invite him to stop by your farm. Dan can be reached at (740) 505-3843 or danwells@ ohioangus.org and his home office for the Ohio Angus Association is located at 625 Cattail Rd. Chillicothe, OH 45601. 74
THE OHIO ANGUS AUXILIARY On January 28, 1956, a group of approximately seventy-five enthusiastic women met at the Fort Hayes Hotel in Columbus, Ohio and formed the Ohio Women’s’ Auxiliary. The opening session was conducted by Mrs. Barbara Hunt, one of the founders, serving as temporary chairman. Mrs. Arthur Mallory of Hampton, Iowa, then President of the American Women’s Auxiliary, assisted with the organization and conducted the first election of officers in which Mrs. Florence Hederding of Canfield, Ohio was named the first President. The purpose of the Auxiliary has been to aid the Ohio Angus Association and Ohio Junior Angus Association in promoting the Angus breed. These activities include state scholarship awards, support of the American Auxiliary Scholarship program, selection of the annual Miss Ohio Angus, Junior Show Awards for girls & boys, Women’s Showmanship Contest, and acting as a hospitality committee at most Ohio Angus events. The Ohio Angus Auxiliary Scholarship program began in 1962 and through 1968 was annually awarded to an Ohio State University student in the College of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science. The Board of Directors announced that the 1969 scholarship Award would be patterned after American Auxiliary Scholarship rules. This award is open to graduating high school senior boys and girls. The highest scoring girl or boy applicants will be Ohio’s entries in the American Auxiliary Scholarship contest and receive the Ohio Scholarship Award. The American Auxiliary Scholarship winner will be announced at the Ohio Preview Show. The Ohio Scholarship money will be awarded at the following Annual Banquet. The winner must attend college or some other course of higher education within one year. Annually from 1958 through 1965, an Ohio Angus Queen was selected on the basis of her cattle show ring success, and from 1959 to 1963, an Ohio Angus King was chosen on the same basis. After 1965, the Queen was selected from a representative of each district association, competing on a point system. In 1968, the Queen was renamed “Miss Ohio Angus”. Starting in 1972, the Auxiliary selected judges to interview each district representative just before the Annual Meeting. Beginning in 1977, candidates for Miss Ohio Angus need not be representatives of a regional association. The “Miss Ohio Angus” is crowned and begins her reign at the Ohio Beef Expo. She presents ribbons and awards at Ohio Angus Association sponsored events and at other Angus events where she is invited. At the following Annual Banquet she will end her reign, and receive an engraved silver award in recognition of her service to the Ohio Angus Association. Miss Ohio Angus will be allotted an allowance to help defer her expenses in connection with her duties. The Silver Show Award is open to a girl and a boy Junior Angus Association member of 4-H or FFA age and is based entirely on show records. Each year during the Ohio Angus Preview Show, The Ohio Angus Auxiliary sponsors a Ladies Showmanship Contest and presents a trophy to the winner. To be eligible, a contest must be age twenty-one (21) or over and a paid member of the Ohio Angus Auxiliary. The Auxiliary assists the Ohio Angus Association at the Annual Banquet by acting as the hospitality committee, decorating the tables, designing the programs and serving as part of the Annual meeting committee. The Angus Auxiliary serves refreshments at the Ohio Preview Show and the Ohio State Fair, and acts as hostesses at the Annual Field day. The Ohio Angus Auxiliary assists the directors of the Ohio Angus Association with the Ohio State Fair Booth and is available to help with promotions at the Farm Science Review. The Ohio Angus Auxiliary is supported by its dues of $5.00 per year and fund raising projects such as the sale of Angus Motif items and coffee & doughnuts at sale and Angus events. Any women interested in Angus cattle are cordially invited to join our organization and share in activities and fellowship while helping to promote the most important product - ANGUS CATTLE and ANGUS BEEF.

Maplecrest
Rita
Maplecrest Rita 7088 and her illustrious dam, Maplecrest Rita A531, had tremendous show careers. Both females have made an even greater genetic impact in the pasture. As a family, we have always enjoyed competing in the show ring. We’re grateful for the friendships made throughout the years. Many important teaching opportunities with our daughters have been the result of competing with the very best in the show ring. That’s our family. Our expectations for excellence from MCF females far exceed their accomplishments in the show ring. MCF females are pretty on the outside and powerful on the inside. That’s our business.
