Ohio Angus Breeders, I’m sure like many of you I’m starting to wonder if this winter would ever give up! April was unusually damp and cool, delaying planting and spring turnout for many. But early May things finally started to change some and the forecast is looking more favorable. I hope you all are having a safe spring in the fields and are getting ready for hay season just around the bend. Despite the softer fat cattle and feeder cattle prices the demand for Angus genetics held strong through the spring. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing steady averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. If you are interested in marketing females privately or through a fall consignment sale, give me a call to see how Ohio Angus can help you. Just around the corner will be the Ohio Junior Angus Association will be hosting the Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show on June 13-16 in Lima, OH. I encourge all Ohio Angus members to come to the show and help suppport the Juniors in hosting the show. The Ohio Angus Preview Show nwill be held in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show. The Junior and Open Shows of the Preview will be show on Sunday, June 17. More details are included on the front page as well on the website at www.ohioangus.org. If you are interested in supporting the Preview Shows by purchasing a sponsorship, contact me to discuss options that are available. The Preview Show entry deadline is May 25th. The Saturday evening dinner will be held Ohio Angus Association. Looking ahead, the Ohio State Fair Angus shows will be held on July 27-29. 2018 Ohio Beef Expo Youth Judging Contest Winners
The Ohio Beef Expo’s judging contest was held on Youth Day, sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio on March 16. Over 450 youth participated in the contest, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) and The Ohio State University Extension. Participants evaluated live cattle classes and were required to answer questions regarding those classes. Participants were divided into junior and senior divisions. Complete results from the contest can be found at www.ohiobeefexpo.com. This contest would not have been possible without the valued donations of contest sponsors. Snook Named 2018 Friend of the Ohio Beef Expo

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) awarded Nancy Snook, Caldwell, Ohio, with the Friend of the Expo Award at the Ohio Beef Expo, held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center. Each year, dedicated volunteers spend countless hours ensuring the success of the Expo. In an effort to show OCA’s sincere appreciation for those who have dedicated themselves over the years, the Ohio Beef Expo Planning Committee presents the Friend of the Expo award to worthy recipients who have contributed to the success of the past 31 years of the Expo. Snook grew up on a family farm that raised registered Angus cattle. After showing in 4-H and
FFA for many years, she went on to start a career as a 4-H extension educator. Now, Snook is a 4-H extension educator in Noble County and teaches as one of Ohio’s most dedicated and interactive volunteers, specializing in her youth beef quality assurance (BQA) sessions. Snook’s family participated in the breed show and sale at the first Ohio Beef Expo in 1988. In the early 90s, Nancy was asked to join the junior show committee and help facilitate the judging contest. Today, Snook teaches youth BQA at the Expo and has been a mainstay since 2012. “It’s awesome to see kids get excited to learn about the beef industry. Nancy has executed fun, interactive, and highly educational BQA sessions to Ohio’s youth for several years. Her tireless planning and enthusiasm to go above and beyond are what make her such an asset to not only the Expo, but Ohio’s beef industry,” said Stephanie Sindel, OCA Director of Member Services and Youth Programs. All aspects of the Expo are appreciated by Snook. “I like that the trade show and youth activities have grown. With that happening the breed sales and shows are still the heart of the Expo. It is a whole weekend focused on the beef industry,” said Snook.

Ohio Beef Expo Hosts Successful Sales The Ohio Beef Expo held March 16-18 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio hosted six breed sales, selling 374 live lots at an average price of $2,879 with a gross of $1,197,125. Keri Felumlee Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Keri Felumlee, Newark, Ohio, has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 17-year-old daughter of Dawn and David Felumlee attends Licking Valley High School and is a member of the NJAA and the Ohio Junior Angus Association, where she serves as vice president. She has participated in regional and national shows. At the 2014 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Keri participated in the mentoring program. She has consigned cattle in the Ohio Angus Superstar Sale and the Partners in Performance Sales. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle. The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

with both registered and commercial producers of all sizes.” The 2019 books are available in any quantity for $3.25 each and can be customized, free of charge, with purchases of 100 or more. Customized orders may include the operation’s logo and contact information foil stamped onto the back cover, while standard orders feature the Association’s logo. Orders must be placed no later than July 31 and customized orders should be proofed prior to sending in the information. The black books are a way for commercial cattle producers to collect the information they need for verification programs such as AngusSource or enrolling in marketing programs like AngusLink. Angus seedstock producers find the black book helpful to record information to submit to the Association office. The books include sections for recording pasture usage, calf information, AI breeding records, supplement and cattle treatment records, in addition to a section for notes and a yearly calendar. All of the information contained in the black books makes them an easy choice for Angus producers wanting to improve their herds: “Cattle records are critical when it comes to making data-driven decisions to improve overall herd profitability,” Gottswiller says. “Place your order today to ensure timely delivery this fall.” Books will be shipped on or around the week of October 15 ― just in time to distribute to customers during the fall marketing and holiday seasons. Orders are now being accepted for 2019 Angus Black Book calving books. For years, Angus producers from across the country have kept herd records using the pocketsized Angus black books. Stacks of the books, some dating back more than 30 years, contain handwritten information about the producer’s cattle, memories of where their operations have been and where they are today. Every detail counts when it comes to managing a profitable herd, and the American Angus Association® is now accepting orders for the 2019 edition of the black book. “Black books can be the most cost-effective herd management system for your operation,” says Ginette Gottswiller, Association director of commercial programs. “They are a popular item - 10 -

Early shedders wean heavier calves, suffer less heat stress, tend to breed back more readily and are more attractive to look at than animals that retain their winter coat all summer. “Hair shedding is around 0.35% heritable. “You will be surprised at the variation you find within your herd for shedding. As you work toward a more productive cowherd, use shedding along with growth, performance, carcass EPD’s,” says Cole. “We do not have a hair shedding EPD yet, but someday we might.” Cole says it is important to note that besides genetic differences; age, nutrition and season of calving can all affect shedding status. “Some slow shedders may still calve on a regular basis and wean above average weight calves and vice versa. If that’s the case, I will hold on to them as long as they perform well,” said Cole.
