Secretary’s Corner
In This Issue...
Ohio Angus Breeders, Summer is officially in full swing. I hope that everyone has been able to stand the excess rain. However compared to this time 2 years ago I don’t think anyone is complaining about extra moisture. It difinately has the crops and pastures looking really good. The Ohio Angus Preview was held on June 21 & 22 in Chillicothe, OH. The show was a huge success with app. 90 head participating in the 2 day show. I want to Thank the Wells Family for hosting the show and Jake Osborne and Boehringer Ingelheim for sponsoring the dinner on Saturday night. The National Junior Angus Show started July 6 and runs through July 12 in Indianapolis, IN. Before you know it the Ohio State Fair will be here as well. The Angus shows are Scheduled for July 23 & July 24. I encourage everyone to take a day, attend the many attractions the state fair has to offer and take in a great Angus show. More details and complete schedule for the State Fair Angus show can be found on page 12. The strength on the cattle market held strong

through the spring. With most all of the spring Angus sales in Ohio and surrounding states seeing higher averages and grosses compared to recent years. I anticipate the demand for Angus based cows to hold through the fall. If you are interested in marketing females privately or through a fall consignment sale, give me a call to see how Ohio Angus can help you. Thanks,

Industry News & Notes Alex Tolbert Joins the American Angus Association Tolbert to serve as Angus regional manager for Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. The American Angus Association® welcomes Alex Tolbert of Frankfort, Ky., as the regional manager for Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Tolbert brings several years experience working in commercial livestock markets and managing registered Angus cattle. In his new position, Tolbert will play a significant role in helping Association members identify herd goals, learn new programs and services, and grow into the future. “The legacy of the regional manager for the Angus breed is one of respect,” Tolbert says. “It’s a true honor to promote a superior brand and work hard to maintain that status.” As a regional manager, Tolbert will represent the Angus breed at various cattle events, sales, shows and other activities throughout the territory. Breeders are encouraged to ask him questions about Association programs and services, or for help locating Angus seedstock. He can also advise producers on marketing opportunities available through the Association, including advertising through the Angus Journal and other avenues. “Alex has grown up in the Angus industry, and we are thrilled he is joining the American Angus Association team,” says Bryce Schumann, Association chief executive officer. “He has a wide variety of experiences that he brings to this position serving cattlemen in Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.” Tolbert graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. He most recently worked for the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service in Livestock and Grain Market News. He started there in 2007, as a market reporter and was promoted to the officer-in-charge in 2012. In that position, he directed efforts to collect information from 50 livestock markets across
Kentucky and Tennessee. The reports pertained to supply, demand, price, trends and movements of livestock, including more than 1 million head of cattle. Tolbert’s Angus experience began on a small family operation, but today he partners in Elrod and Tolbert Cattle in Talmo, Ga., where he has learned about the vast array of programs and services available through the American Angus Association. In 2006, he served as chairman of the National Junior Angus Association Board of Directors. Contact Tolbert at atolbert@angus.org or at 706.338.8733. He looks forward to getting to know more Angus breeders in the area and finding ways to be of service. For more information about Angus cattle and the Association, visit www.ANGUS.org. 44 Farms to Donate 2015 Angus Foundation Heifer Proceeds from the Denver sale will benefit Angus education, youth and research.
The Angus Foundation is pleased to announce 44 Farms, Cameron, Texas, as the 2015 Angus Foundation Heifer Package donor. She sells January 2015 at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo. “We are excited about the great work Milford Jenkins and the entire Angus Foundation team is doing to advance research, educate and inspire our youth,” says Bob McClaren, 44 Farms owner. “These are the best of times for the Angus breed and the American Angus Association. We are proud to assist, because the best is yet to be.” 44 Farms began in 1909 when S.W. McClaren acquired his first tract of Little River farmland. Today, four generations later, two of the great-grandchildren Robert S. McClaren and Janet McClaren Salazar, are committed to honoring and enhancing the tradition of a successful farming and ranching operation – 44 Farms. “All of us at 44 Farms are honored and very excited to donate the 2015 Angus Foundation Heifer Package,” says Doug Slattery, 44 Farms chief operating officer. “The efforts of the Angus Foundation to advance and help educate our Angus youth are remarkable, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

We have selected proven bulls since the late 60's, and the Rita Lass 004 cow family came out of the highest classifying cow in the Angus breed during the 1960's. There are over 70 Pathfinder bulls in the first 6 generations of these embryo calves. Selecting proven Pathfinder bulls lends to genetic consistency and high predictability as the Pfizer test scores indicate. We currently have several embryo calves on the ground. The heifers will go into our embryo program and the bulls are for sale. We invite Angus breeders to come by this summer, and see the top genetic proven calves of the Angus breed. We will sell all of our other bulls and heifers out of our cow herd this fall. Prices are reasonable. Come down on the farm and see what 8 generations of performance selection by proven bulls can create on a grass management program.
