Secretary’s Corner

In This Issue...

Ohio Angus Breeders, October was a busy month in the Ohio Angus world. It was filled with sales starting with the Partners in Performance Female Sale on October 19th which was a huge success. The very next day, Terry Howland held the Dispersal of his Meadow Lane Angus which was received by a huge crowd. To concluded the weekend of sales, Champion Hill held another very successful fall production sale. Congrats to Paul, Lynn & crew on a great event. Sale reports for each are post on page 1. Finally we rounded out the month on Oct. 26th with the Eastern Ohio Angus sale. Their sale consignors brought and excellent set of cattle that were very well received by the large crowd. Look for a complete sale report in next months newsletter. Coming up is the Buckeye Best of Both Worlds Sale, November 23rd, in Newark, OH. We have a great sale offering cataloged and interest in this event has been tremendous. I encourage everyone to attend this elite event and support the many consignors. Again this year we will be holding a Directory Cover Photo Contest for the 2014 Ohio Angus Directory Cover. A vote will be held at the 2014 Ohio Angus Annual Meeting and the winning photo will be featured on the Directory cover. More details including entry instructions can be found on the back cover of this issue.

Industry News & Notes Ohio Beef Farmers Team Up to Donate 9,912 Lean Beef Meals

Kerrie Miller Earns Junior Bronze & Silver Awards Kerrie Miller, Wapakoneta, Ohio, has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, junior activities director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo.

(MARYSVILLE, Ohio) - More than one ton of lean ground beef was donated to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank in early October by Ohio’s beef farmers and Kroger. Throughout the summer, Columbus Clippers, Kroger, the Ohio Soybean Council, Ohio Corn Marketing Program and the Mid-Ohio Foodbank partnered with Ohio beef farmers in Striking Out Hunger with Lean Beef. A donation of 2,478 pounds of lean ground beef is the result of that partnership in 2013 with a total of more than 4,500 pounds from the duration of the program which started in 2012.

The 17-year-old daughter of Ron and Kellie Miller attends Wapakoneta High School. Miller is a member of the NJAA, West Central Ohio Angus Association and Eastern Ohio Angus Association. She has participated in local, state, regional and national shows and showmanship. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Miller participated in the quiz bowl contest. In 2011, Miller participated in the mentoring program.

Thanks to the skill of the Columbus Clippers’ pitching staff, every strike out they recorded during the 2013 baseball season resulted in a donation of two pounds of lean ground beef to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. The donation doesn’t stop there, as one pound of lean ground beef feeds a family of four while providing 10 essential vitamins and nutrients and accounting for only 150 calories. The successful program resulted in a donation of 9,912 lean beef meals. “On behalf of Ohio’s beef farmers I would like to say how honored we were to be a part of this program for the second year,” says Bill Sexten, chairman of the Ohio Beef Council Operating Committee. “Lean ground beef plays an important role in a healthy diet and we are thankful for the opportunity to provide more than 9,900 Ohioans a meal that includes beef.”

Miller has consigned cattle the Eastern Ohio sale. She is also active in her local FFA chapter. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

Representatives from the Ohio Beef Council, the Columbus Clippers and the Mid-Ohio Foodbank were present as a Kroger delivered 100 cases of fresh ground beef to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. In addition, those in attendance received a tour of the Mid-Ohio Foodbank facilities and learned more about their work to provide nutritious meals to Ohioans in need.
