2013 Ohio Angus Field Day
On August 18, 2013 the Ohio Angus Association held their annual Field Day which was graciously hosted by Terry & Cindy Schuh of Home Acres Farm in Lebanon, OH. A huge crowd of over 160 people gathered at Home Acres Farm to enjoy an afternoon of great food, fellowship and Angus cattle. The day began with vendor tables and cattle on display from several members of the Miami Valley Angus Association which co-sponsored the event. At noon, attendees were treated to a great meal including Certified Angus Beef Prime Rib and homemade ice cream. After the meal, a program of speakers enlightened the group with comments and updates on their respective entities and the industry. Including Dr. Francis Fluharty from Ohio State Animal Science Department, Mark McCully with Certified Angus Beef,
and Bryce Schumann the CEO of the American Angus Association. A special Thank You goes out to everyone that helped make the field day such a huge success! More pictures and snapshots of the day compliments of Patty Bamber with Pugh & Associates are posted to the Ohio Angus Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/ohioangus

Ohio Angus Breeders Honored for Historic Herd
The American Angus Association recognizes K K Duncan & Son, Zanesville, Ohio. The Historic Angus Herd Award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 years or more. The American Angus Association® is honored to recognize K K Duncan & Son, Zanesville, Ohio, as a Historic Angus Herd. Christmas came a day late for William Duncan in 1949. His parents, Kenneth and Mildred Duncan, purchased their Angus herd’s foundation females on Dec. 26, 1949. The Granger Brothers, Jack and Jim, also from Zanesville, Ohio, bred the two cows and heifer calf. William Duncan raised the cattle as 4-H projects, and because of his efforts, was recognized as a FFA State Farmer in 1957. The family joined the American Angus Association in 1951, surpassing 60 years of raising Angus cattle. Over the years, K K Duncan & Son was recognized with many other awards and showring honors. Today, William and his son, Al, currently run 15 head, and some of the cattle are descendants of the original mother cow.
AngusSource Fulfills 1 Million Tags
The American Angus Association verification program reaches monumental goal. When Drue Summers, Ririe, Idaho, recently placed an order for neon green AngusSource® Genetic tags, he successfully pushed the program over the one million mark. The American Angus Association®’s age, source and genetic verification service has become a trusted approach to identifying calves throughout the past decade. “The millionth tag is a great feat for the AngusSource program,” says Ginette Kurtz, AngusSource Genetic quality manager. “Since we began in 2003, we’ve been able to help a large number of producers receive the most value for their Angus-sired feeder calves and replacement females.” Summers is a manager for Foster Cattle LLC in Idaho, an operation that has been enrolling calves in
AngusSource for more than six years. The total number of Foster Cattle calves enrolled tops 13,000 head. “I think the AngusSource program helps buyers know the quality they are getting, because they are not taking a risk on a calf they do not know anything about,” Summers says. “And then it helps us to go back to repeat buyers, as well.” Documented genetics, consistency and value are what keep customers returning to their cattle, Summers says. They have seen increased interest from buyers who want to know not only the age and source component, but also the genetic verification and performance data associated with a group of calves. Foster Cattle LLC has used AngusSource to keep more accurate records and better analyze the carcass data given back to them, as well. “With AngusSource, records are tied to each individual calf and we can get the data back from our partner feed yards on how they performed,” Summers says. “That effects how we purchase bulls or where cattle are going to go on our ranch in the future.” The Association established the AngusSource program in 2003 as a genetic verification program that would allow producers to receive more value for black-hided calves sired by registered Angus bulls. Today, most producers and buyers want to use data to make sound management and purchasing decisions. The Association has transitioned the program into what is now known as AngusSource Genetic to convey the genetic potential from using superior quality Angus bulls. Calves enrolled in the program are identified by an AngusSource Genetic ear tag and issued an official marketing document. Distributed to interested buyers, the document lists up-to-date production, maternal and carcass expected progeny differences (EPDs) for the group’s sires, as well as dollar-value indexes tailored to both the replacement female and feeder calf markets. “As we move forward, there’s huge need to continue to produce more beef with fewer head of cattle,” Kurtz says. “We want producers to be able to use all the American Angus Association’s programs and tools, so they can get the most value for the calves they raise. I feel that AngusSource Genetic can really help our commercial cattlemen get the most value for using registered Angus bulls.”

Industry News & Notes OCA Young Cattlemen’s Conference Provides Industry Learning Experience MARYSVILLE, Ohio — The 2013 Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC) hosted 10 cattlemen and women for a 3-day leadership development program in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 22-24. The conference was made possible by Farm Credit Mid-America, Ohio Soybean Council and Steve R. Rauch. YCC kicked off Thursday evening at the Crowne Plaza North in Columbus with a beef dinner and participants were present for the 2013 Ohio State Fair Commercial Cattle Show carcass contest awards presentation. Guest speaker, Dr. Ronald Kensinger, The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences Chair, discussed the importance of cattlemen working together, the value of new technologies in beef production and the need for transparency in consumer communication. Friday morning at the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) office, attendees participated in a spokesperson training program by Daren Williams, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Executive Director of Communications. Williams led participants through mock media interviews and provided them with the tools necessary to effectively share their story with consumer audiences. They also heard from OCA staff on the value of membership and the roles that OCA plays in legislative and regulatory issues. Following lunch, participants travelled to the Ohio State House where they met with Representative Gary Scherer (92nd District). Rep. Scherer spoke about current Ohio legislation affecting the beef cattle industry and answered questions from the group. YCC participants attended Beef Night at the Ballpark with the Columbus Clippers on Friday evening. They spoke with attendees about beef production and passed out recipes and giveaway items prior to taking in the game at Huntington Park. Saturday morning was spent with Dr. Henry Zerby, Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences, in a Mini-BEEF 509 class. Dr. Zerby provided handson learning on how meat is graded, fabrication of wholesale and retail cuts, and other issues that can affect beef quality and pricing. Participants also
viewed champion carcasses from the 2013 Ohio State Fair. A special tour of the Ohio State University Football Complex was a highlight of the program thanks to a continuing relationship between OCA and the OSU football team. OCA annually prepares and serves beef for the Champions Dinner and OSU Coaches Dinner. Participants learned about the history of OSU football and walked through training and practice facilities. YCC concluded with a discussion led by Ohio Beef Council staff regarding its role in checkoff collection and beef promotional efforts in Ohio and a “State of the Industry” podcast provided by John Grimes, Ohio State University Extension Beef Coordinator, that tackled a variety of factors contributing to the current state of the industry and predictions for the future market outlook. The purpose of the YCC is to offer emerging Ohio beef industry leaders and young producers the opportunity to build their own leadership skills as they network with beef industry leaders, government officials, businesses and media. Young beef producers interested in attending the 2014 YCC should contact Emily Griffiths at 614-873-6736 or email beef@ ohiobeef.org.
