JOURNEY TO SOUTH BANK It all started with 411 VM #1. A London metrospective article. I remember seeing South Bank for the first time, and thinking I have to go there! Fast forward to 1995 and I finally saved up what I thought to be enough money for a week long trip. I spent a few days with that by now worn out copy of 411, slo-moing and pausing all the spots and writing down all the names and tube stations. I flew to London armed with a map, a notepad, (which I distinctively remember writing Winston Whitter name down cause he seemed cool) 5 brand new Sonic Skateboards and a whopping $300. Well, right out the gate I traded in my hard earned $300 bucks and got back a disappointing 150 pounds... I had no clue what currency exchange even meant! After all, this was my first time leaving the USA!!! I was screwed. But luckily I had my trusty notepad and my 411 notes! I looked up Slam City Skates, and found my way to covent garden. Looking back, I bet you it was like Seth Curtis working there, I don’t know for sure, but the dudes working there were really stoked on my story of watching 411 and wanting to come out to London. They bought all the sonic boards off me, (The pitch in graphics

if I remember correctly) and pointed me in the direction of South Bank. Waterloo exit, If my memory serves me. Right out the train station I saw a rail that was in the Blind Video Days video! I was stoked, my trip was back on track. I skated South Bank all day. The second day was terrible. I awoke from my shitty hostel bed to find it raining. Bummer. I went back to Slam City to ask about covered spots. While in there, this time half way just killing time I saw there was a UK Mag, Sidewalk. They had a few issues lying around and I half asked to purchase all three, thinking yesterday they heard my plight and knew I had hardly any money… Nope, those dudes charged me full price for all 3 mags. They were of little help that day and I just headed back to South Bank. It rained for the next 6 days straight. I basically lived at South Bank, drinking some god awful beverage that was like .50 cents called White Ace. South Bank turned into a library for me, and my choice of reading was those 3 issues of Sidewalk. I was like a wet sponge and soaked up everything on every page… It was like no other skate mag I had ever seen, with articles like Working Class Heroes, where the dude skated, but was also a full time postman.

All the sick photos. It was nothing like an American magazine at the time and I loved it!! I don’t think I met too many skaters, but on paper I was introduced into a whole scene I knew nothing about. Companies called Death and A Third Foot, superstars I’d never heard of, photographers with names like Wig Worland! Looking back, the one image that stands out the most from those issues was a dude wearing all bright yellow, big yellow a pants, big yellow shirt. I think he was doing a nose slide on a curb. I went back to England a few years later and somehow got myself hooked up with a subscription. Its actually the longest magazine subscription I have ever had! I still enjoy seeing English skate culture evolve, and its great to have seen young talent like little Nick Jenson from the pages of Sidewalk make it the America. Man, Sidewalk has really come a long way from those issues I scoured over and over in that piss smelling underground. Thank you Sidewalk for keeping the British skateboard scene alive! If it weren’t for you I would have never ever heard of a little pikey tranny ripper named Ben Raemers. -Louie Barletta

BEN R AEMERS Raemers comes from a shitty run down seaside town in Essex where nothing ever happens. They built a little concrete park there, so we randomly headed over to check it out as I had been told about this little kid who skated there. Sure enough he was there and we watched this little pikey kid cruising around. He seemed to have learnt a trick from every guy that skated that park. He had a sick style, a rad boneless and could even do pressure flips? A 12 year old should not even know what pressure flips are, yet alone be able to do every variation. Pretty much straight after that he became one of our crew. It worked out pretty well as his mum would always give us a 6 pack to say thanks for taking her angry teenager away every weekend. He then stole all of our tricks and in return we hooked him up with boards, shoes and paid for him to eat pretty much every weekend for 6 years! In the really early days I was a TM for a shoe brand. I hooked him up but he was so little we didn’t have shoes in his size. We wanted to take him to Marseille for the bowlriders to show him what skateboarding was all about but as he wasn’t really on the team at that time we all sold our extra shoes to pay for his flight. This was Ben’s first time out of the country, first ever flight and the start of him seeing what is really out there. After the contest, while we were all in the bar, he was ripping the park with the locals until the early hours and then helping us carry boozy friends back to our hotel.

It was obvious pretty quick we had a Jedi on our hands. He asked you how do a trick, you explained it, showed him and then within an hour he could do it better than you ever had. From pressure flips at 12 to padless mctwists and 12 stair handrails at 14 it was a pretty crazy thing to watch happen. He was like a sponge, picking all the best tricks from our crew and then doing them better than any of us. Ben has always been the coolest kid and has really appreciated everything we have done for him. He has taken all of the abuse from our whole crew all of the time. I think most people are nicer in the USA so it’s harder for him to find total cunts who he classes as mates to call him out and shout at him enough to make him either kill himself or ride away! I know we are all stoked to have been a part of seeing that little kid from a shitty seaside town in Essex go on to travel the world and getting paid to ride a skateboard, killing everything in his path, always with a smile on his face. Going pro and getting two thrasher covers is the icing on the cake! He knows we all owe everything to skateboarding! It’s the best thing you could ever do and you owe it to skateboarding to kill yourself trying. Keep ripping mate. -Munson

What type of work do you do? - Carpentry. How long have you been doing carpentry for? - Off and on since I was 18. So about 8 years. How did you get into this line of work? - My father has been a carpenter before I was born, so when I turned 18 I started working at the same company as him. Are you more of a knock it down, and frame it up, or are you more of a finish guy? - The company I work for does everything. They build giant custom houses from the ground up mainly. So, in the beginning I’m framing and by the end I’m setting the hardware on the cabinets. Do you own a tool belt? - Yup. Is it like skating, does the job site shut down on rainy days? - During the early stage of the house it does. Can’t use power tools in the rain. I notice a lot of construction guys skate. What is the connection there? - I think it’s just kind of the freedom of the job. Yeah, there is a main objective but you can usually do it in your own style. Plus, usually your just working with your buddies goofing off here and there. How is it dealing with homeowners? In a weird way you are invading peoples personal space. - Depends, sometimes people are super mellow handing you beers at the end of the day. Then there are the kooks. Watching you like a hawk thinking you a 3 time felon. If your super good at carpentry can you get like tool sponsors? Like Dewalt or Craftsman? - I know a lot of woodworkers that do online videos do. It’s pretty rad. Lucky bastards. What’s your favorite tool? - On the job site probably the good old skill saw. In the woodshop the hand plane.

Then there are the kooks, Watching you like a hawk thinking you’re a 3-time felon.” Best porta potty art? - An art series of my boss. Think someone spent a couple weeks on that bad boy. Job site shenanigans? Do you guys play pranks on each other at the job site? - Pretty much everyday. Locking my boss in the porta potty to replacing someone’s hammer with a banana in there tool belt. Brown bag it, or taco truck? - Both. Utah get me two! Worst job site accident/injury? - Falling off a 8 foot ladder to sacking the floor joist. Balls were aching & all my tools were everywhere from my belt. Have you ever smashed your thumb? - Yup. My thumb nail grows with a crack all the way down the center now. Been like that for about 5 years. Best/worst part of being a carpenter? - Long labor days suck but using your tool & watching constant progression of your work is pretty satisfying.

What’s the hardest wood? - Morning wood? So now that you’ve turned pro and are making money off skateboarding are you still doing much construction? Is it like skating where you sometimes feel the need to get out there and build some shit? Now, I usually only work if I am hurt for a good period of time. Which unfortunately happened right after filming for the Oververt. Besides that I’m out skating full time & when I get burnt out on skating I’ll spend a couple days in the woodshop messing around. Gotta keep a balance. What’s harder filming and skating everyday or waking up and doing construction all day? - Honestly, filming for Oververt the last couple weeks were probably equal to having the most stressful week I’ve had as a carpenter. I guess it just matters how serious you take your job at certain times.

Who did you meet first from enjoi? - Louie was the first one. How did you get hooked up with enjoi? - The distributor from Portugal first started to give me boards and it was like this for a year maybe a bit more then he told me that he couldn’t give me boards anymore, I said thanks and thought that was it, it was all good. I went to Barcelona a couple days after and I was staying at the DC apartment and Louie was there too. We went skating maybe 2 days and it was super cool, last day Louie came and talked to me about enjoi... back then my English was really bad but I understood a couple words hahaha!!!! He asked me if I wanted to start getting boards, but for real. Boards from enjoi not the distributor anymore. All I really understood was Lou was stoked on me and wanted to give me boards. I was super stoked! That’s rad, I remember Louie talking about meeting you and he was so pumped on you! he said he watched you just pushing around and you just oozed style! Then and there he said he wanted to put you on! he just knew you had it. What was your first enjoi tour like? - First tour was super sick, because almost the whole team went. It was rad to meet everyone and skate with everyone and get to a point where I was comfortable with them, by then my english was good, so we could joke around and basically we just had fun! You don’t party too hard. I see you having only 1 beer or 3 or 4…. were you scared that the team was just going to party super hard the whole time? - Hahaha no not at all, everyone just had a few, “good times”. How was it when Wieger was playing Willy Nelson every day in China, trying to convince everyone skateboarders are modern versions of true wild west cowboys? - That was the best thing! after China I keep listening to Willie’s songs and remembering the moments in the van of him lecturing us about how important it was to listen to Willies words. You were in Texas when Louie and Ben shot the oververt Thrasher cover, right? How was that? - It was gnarly, at first it seemed they weren’t going to be able to do it! They were super close to each other, sometimes it seemed that Ben was going to land on top of Louie, when they both landed it, it was crazy, we were all so stoked. How come you didn’t get in and do triples? - Hahaha, I was thinking about doing something over Ben but nah, I had the best place to watch. Does anyone call you Mowgli? - Yes, even before Oververt my friend Edu and others friends used to call me “Mowgli Boy,” hahaha. When are you coming back to the states? - I think soon, maybe in a couple months, it’s gonna be fun. You skate Barcelona a lot right? There you just cruise from spot to spot, or take the metro around the city. When you think of skating in the USA, it’s all just about spots. What spots do you think about wanting to skate when you think about coming out here to skate? Clipper? El Toro? Hahaha - No way man! I like those natural bumps on the sidewalk you can launch out of, here in Portugal we don’t have those. I can’t really think of the name of them..curb cuts? the Bay Area has a lot of rad ones. Did you know you were going to have 1st part in oververt? - I had no idea, I didn’t know nothing about the video at all and was super sick! I remember that before the premiere started I went to piss and Matt was there and he was like yo Thaynan, did you know that you have the first part and I was like no way Matt stop playing with me hahaha and 5 minutes later I was just shocked doing a Oververt with Louie!

Photography by Gastón Francisco Your song was sick it went great with your part, did you pick the INXS song? - Sent some songs to them, not that INXS, but I’m glad that they put the INXS because went perfect and I love how it looks. Thanks guys! When you were younger, were there any enjoi guys you looked up to? - Lou. That’s rad. Now that you have traveled the world with these guys, who is your favorite enjoi rider to hang out with? - I like to hang out with them all, it’s really fun when the whole team gets together.

Yeah, those are some inspiring dudes. Any other skaters that inspire you? - Watching my friends shred inspire me, seeing a lot of the OGs still ripping is inspiring too. What is next for you? - I love photography and shooting photos, I just built a darkroom so hopefully more printing!! Hahaha . I just wanna keep having fun and skating. Hopefully more traveling! I love being introduced to new cultures. its the best learning experience ever. You rule Thaynan. Thanks.

Manolo Robles Interview by Luigi Sanchez What do you think your life would be like if you were not born in Almeria, Spain? How do you think that being born in the South of Spain has influenced you as skater? - I think that I would be the same person; I would be in the same existential and spiritual plane as I am at now… I could be you and you could be me, but who knows bro… Being born in the South of Spain has been crucial for me. Almeria is one of the most enlightened cities in the world, and down here, Schumann resonance and sunlight are a very important part of our lives. Light is one of the main gateways to knowledge. Sunlight provides you with energy and happiness, something that is very important when you want to practice any activity. You seem to be very interested in music. What role does music play in your life? - To be honest with you, music itself does not inspire me anymore. It’s actually more of an impediment. Silence is what is inspiring now… I play guitar just when I’m bored. Although sometimes, I think that I would like to have a band, take the stage with friends, make some noise and play with chicks… Make all those things that feed the ego… I know that diet and food are a very important part of your life nowadays. Tell me about that - Eating well is important to me but feeding emotionally is even more important… Talking about food, it is true that I’ve been following a different diet for the last couple of years compared to what I ate in the past. I felt bad for a long time, sort of sick, with stomach pains from time to time so I decided to change this… I stopped eating some animal origin food, sugar or refined flour among other things… I got into vegetables and drinking a lot more water… I noticed an incredible improvement in a very short time. More importantly, the best food is love! I still remember that time when we met in London 4 years ago which was your first time traveling out of Spain. Now you seem to travel a lot considering you just came back from a Redbull trip to Jordan. How would you say that travelling has changed your perception on life? - Travelling gives you the opportunity to live lot of situations that you aren’t used to experiencing in your normal life. New languages are unknown to you, people from different cultures who you live with, different religions, different climates, different food… For all that, you need time to adapt… The mind starts to open and you begin to question things… I learned a lot while travelling, and lived lot of adventures. I’ve had many experiences than make you appreciate different perspectives on life… I’m so thankful for that. Within skateboarding you can skate so many different ways, expressing each one’s personality. In your Technical Life video part, it is pretty clear that you are one of the top ledges skaters in the world. What does it take to become a technical skateboarder? Almeria is a city full of ledges. I spent my entire life skating plazas surrounded by ledges so skating that way wasn’t too hard for me… it was what we had in my town… Mullen, Creager, Brennen, Santos, Daewon, Javier Asensio (peluquin), and some others that I can’t remember, where a group of masters… But on the other hand, I always enjoyed watching Colin and Way skating Vert. I wanted to fly as they did but we didn’t have anything like that in Almeria, so I had to adapt myself to what the city offered us… How long does it take you to film a video part with technical ledge wizardry ? - More than a few months. I would say more like a year or sometimes two… Sometimes, there is that trick that it looks simple and it takes me hours until I get it. And other days, a crazy technical one might only take me three minutes… I think this is something that sounds familiar to all who rides a skateboard, right? Some days seem that I can’t even ride my board, and other days, it is like I would disappear and tricks comes out super easy….without interruption…

You have very personal bag of tricks that no one has seen or done before. Do you dream of them and them? - Many of them come up in the right moment, while skating… Others because of friends… I dream a lot, but in my dreams I skate miniramps, stairs and gaps . But, never ledges!

Let’s talk about your set-up. What do you skate ? - I skate 8.0 and 8.25 Darkstar decks, 50mm Wreck wheels and 5.25 Tensor Req mag lites. Social networks have a lot of information constantly… what do you want to tell through it? Apart from the fact of being able to communicate worldwide, for me, social networks are part of the ego’s game, where you show what you are able to do, among other things… I consider you as a quiet and deep thinking person. As you know life goes by very quickly. How would you like to be remembered? - If you think about me, and you feel happy & compassionate, that’s enough for me!

The original urethane durometer that changed skateboarding, and now it’s available in a white urethane. The 91A is our most versatile durometer; soft enough for a smooth cruise on rough streets while the high-rebound formula makes these wheels fast.

The 94A is a fast and resilient urethane formula with a fair amount of grip. Perfect for carving lines in slick concrete skateparks, but soft enough to smooth out even the roughest ditch.

The 97A is the hardest durometer in the white urethane series and is the perfect formula for pools, bowls, ramps, and skateparks. It’s a fast and grippy formula that gives you control when you need it most.

The unique red formula delivers a fast and smooth roll even on very rough surfaces. The soft, forgiving compound keeps your wheels on the ground and you in control.

The Andalé Swiss are manufactured for speed and durability. The races and the ball bearings are made from a higher-strength steel alloy that are precision polished for the smoothest roll. Constructed using a nylon retainer along with the deep groove races allows the ball bearings to handle the force of impact from even the biggest drops. The Swiss also feature a single-sided removable rubber shield for easy cleaning.
