Buildings at Merdeka and Purnawarman streets have various type of facade and building mass. Some of them have a modern-futuristic facade with many bright colors on it, and others have a simple facade with simpe shape. Because of it, the new building must have a stunning facade and shape to create a bold appearance among other buildings.

Antapani is one of the largest residential district in Bandung. ISSUES

HERITAGE BUILDING PRESERVATION

CONNECTIVITY

PUBLIC PARK AS WELCOMING POINT

The existing heritage building on the site is being preserved. Thus, the area that can be built for new building is located at the north and south side of the heritage buildings.

The site is located at the Senen TOD area, so the station must be permeable and have the ability to connect with surroundings.

Since the park is located right in front of the main heritage building, the park is designed to be a welcoming point.

SITE PLAN

HERITAGE BUILDING PRESERVATION

HERITAGE BUILDING RESTORATION To preserve the heritage building, the restoration method is applied. The goal of the building restoration is to bring back the shape of the main building mass to it’s form on 1925, when the station building was built for the first time. The aim of building preservation implementation is to protect the heritage building and to educate people about this historic site.

ADAPTIVE REUSE STRATEGY In the use of heritage buildings, applied an adaptive reuse strategies that aim to increase the value of the building, utilizing space in the city, and to improve the image of the heritage building. The main function of the station is placed in the restorated heritage building.

DESIGN STRATEGIES

INTERMODAL DISTRICT RESPONSES

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING

VIBRANT PUBLIC SPACE

Intermodal district is a busy district with a high level of mobility. The site is located in between the terminal, railway station, and public parking lot. This building could be a hub and a place to stop by for the commuters.

The building is in need of being environmental friendly. Responding to the green space at the north, the clean air from the green space is brought into the building with green space continuing to the bowl.

The Bowl is designed as an orientation center, pedestrian node, and the center of mass. The centered public space could make the building more vibrant from the inside.

GROUND PLAN

MASSING STUDY

Maximize land setbacks to create a maximum area for podium.

Cut the mass of the building by creating a green corridor and the circulation corridor. These corridors then formed a node in the center of the podium.

Creating a terracing form to build a human scale to the bowl, and to make a connection with the modern market

Tower is oriented radial to give the impression of “receiving from each side of the road. It also forms a clear segregation between the mass of the tower and podium, to create the human scale of the residents of the apartment at the top of the podium.

THERMAL COMFORT DIAGRAM

SHADOW DIAGRAM

From the analysis of thermal insulation of the building, it appears that the tower casing temperature is not too high. It shows that the chimney wind on the ‘bowl’ works well. Warmer temperatures in the tower is visible on the rooftop, so it is necessary to add ‘green roofs’ to reduce the temperature.

Thermal comfort level in this building is good enough, but to improve the comfort level, it is necessary to add some additional elements such as green elements and water elements.

From the shadow analysis, can be concluded that the tower masses are shadowing each other mutually. It becomes a positive point for the residents of the apartment, so they don’t directly feel the heat of the sun.

BACKGROUND

WHAT Alun-alun is a Javanese big open space which located next to the palace of Governor or King. It is used for a meeting between the Governor or King and his people. This Javanese green space has big banyan trees in the middle as its character (Paulus, 1971:31) Alun-alun is also known as Indonesian architectural term for the traditional central open square common to villages, towns and cities. WHERE The one of historical quarter that represent colonial era in Bandung city is Asia Afrika street. It was named Groote Postweg in Dutch colonial era where city center, Alun-Alun, was built. Groote Postweg changed it’s name became Asia Afrika street in order to remind people about the Asia-Africa Conference in 1995. Some old buildings was kept while some of the other was destroyed. By now, Asia Afrika street become a commercial area surrounded by art deco and international style architecture buildings The quarter shown below is the quarter that we proposed. This quarter is included Asia Afrika Street, Alunalun, Cikapundung River and it’s surroundings.

ISSUES HISTORICAL QUARTER Nowadays, Bandung is one of the busiest cities in Indonesia. This big city has long history started from Dutch colonization. As a consequence of Dutch colonization, Bandung is known as the colonial architecture laboratories until present. USAGE TRANSFORMATION Alun alun as city center has been reconstructed three times, this changing image of Alun-Alun were caused by economic and political issues in Indonesia, and the impact of modernism to the historical quarter. It caused the original character of alun alun has faded away

NEW CITY CENTER With the new city center in Gedebage, there will be urbanization and migration from the former city center to the new one. Although this quarter is planned to be old city for tourist destination, it is getting older and the lifespan of building is decreasing
