{ Architecture } is the art and science of making sure that our cities and buildings actually fit with the way we want to live our lives: the process of manifesting our society into our physical world.

{ Design Methods } is a close examination of existing literature, in corporation of personal experience as an architect that test these theories through iteration. This creates different types of design Aesthetic depending on the method being practiced.

{ Objective } the team will work collaboratively to design, test, evaluate, and fabricate a real project for the community within Hunter’s Point neighborhood. The project team will include the architect, project management company, the community, and other financial stakeholders.

{ Narrative } Eating is a essential cultural need in society; therefore access to high quality produce in a community is fundamental. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) characterized Food Deserts as low-income areas with limited access to healthy, affordable food. With the ever-changing economic expansion, these diverse communities are being left behind. With Bayview-Hunters Point being one of the largest communities in San Francisco, the residents are forced to face hardships while eating unhealthy processed food.

First Meeting // The first community workshop was all about the client and their vision. A series of questionnaires and workshop activities such as program place-making, site integration diagrams, and model making were conducted. This was to establish a transparent design goal that is derived both from the team and the community. Knowing their vision and their commitment to the garden also gave us the constraints and opportunities of the site and the flexibility of the pavilion’s design. The overall feedback allowed us to further extend the current use and future programming opportunities of the pavilion.

Second Meeting // The community meeting was about the pavilion design and location. Physical model iterations were introduced to the community based on the initial feedback. The team and the community developed a more complete idea of the location within the site. The gathering space was based on a circular gathering space; programs would include performance space for holidays and community events; preparation area for food education and cooking as well as sink and BBQ pit. All programmatic areas will be overlooking the garden and the San Francisco Bay. The redwood lumber material was introduced due to its durability and resistance to weather. The lumber creates a rustic look over time and is resistant to insects and UV rays.

Fourth Meeting // A youth and kids’ workshop was conducted on the last final visit. The workshop was geared towards the younger residents of the community and allowed to experience the design process by building built elements such as wooden stools, concrete stools, and wooden planters. The wooden stools are made from redwood slatted members resembling the pavilion benches. The concrete stools are made from round, concrete seating and wooden legs. The concrete seating is stenciled with leaf patterns using the actual leaves from the garden site. The wooden planters are framed marine-grade lumber resembling the existing wooden planters on the site.
010 // 011
Third Meeting // The final meeting for the pavilion design. A full-scale section prototype model was introduced showing the modular design of the benches, the connection between the bench and the structural frame, and the wave-like expression of the bench. A mapped-out floor plan using tape was provided to show space clearance and program proximity. The floor plan allowed the community to experience the sequence of circulation, move around, and envision the spaces within the pavilion.

Benches // The benches make up a big proportion of the overall pavilion. They must accommodate for different programs in different scenarios. The design follows the same language of the trellis. The 2 x 4 vertical redwoods extend to reach the top of the trellis and acts as blocking. The benches consist of four different modules. Each module is carefully placed to respond to a program or a view. The back module mimics an ottoman bench where the backless design opens up views to the rain garden. The benches were built parametrically to accommodate any changes that might be required in the future. The benches were built off-site, stained and transported to the garden for insulation.

{ Kid of PARTS } a series of ‘Play Furniture’ with a coded ground scape that uses graphic color markings to encourage imagination, exploration & intergenerational play. { Community Workshop } by encouraging various online meetings with SFHDC and the community Youth, we’ve learned that the residents would like an active, inter-generational and flexible space: allowing interactive play, seating, relaxing and community events.

{ Objective } is to design a flexible system that incorporates a range of different activities from play to relax and is available for all generations and residents. We are trying to beautify and activate the courtyard to fully optimize the space.
P R O J E C T / / K I D O F PA R T S
{ Narrative } We have been working with the Bayview Commons Community through workshops and outreach to develop, design and build an outdoor furniture installation that is located in their existing courtyard. The Bayview Commons Apartments is an affordable community in service since 2003, located in Bayview-Hunters Point. Our hope is that this installation can create a new vibrant imagination and gathering space for all residents of this diverse building, but especially for the 29 children residing here. As students, this is a excellent opportunity for us as designers to hone and develop our design skills while learning to fabricate, build and deliver a creative outdoor installation for our client.

Site Markings // The Floor Markings where formulated by creating a set of diagrams using site information learned through site visits and community outreach. The under utilized narrow ally is being turned into a vibrant area for kids to play different types of games. It is abstracting the idea of how soccer is played. It also has an extra layer for kids to use their Imagination to create games out of the circles that mimic the murals color pattern. These games could be anything from darts, corn hole, or even a jail space for tag. Within the main space lyes the Planets. Surrounding the Planets Zones in the Play-Path that also mimics the Mural’s color palette. The turns are curved to create a more friendly path for the users. The blue within the Zones is hatched using white lines to indicate the main play areas were these follies will be used. It also is connected 2 Zones together.

Community Outreach // 01 We used Mood-boards to connect and learn what the community would like to see in their courtyard. We learned that they would like an active space that focuses on their youth. They also responded well to Vertical Gardens, Floor Markings, Sports and Interactive Play Objects Community Workshop // 02 We were very excited to interact more with the community with some fun activities that would have allowed us to learn more about our client. We created activities that both shows us how the community views their courtyard and how kids interpret space.

Community Zoom // 01 Because of the shelter in place order we decided to switch our design process to virtual. We did not want this to effect our mission to learn more about the community and its youth. Luckily we were able to connect with several kids in the building through various Zoom calls that focused on getting to know them and introducing them to design.

{ Objective } I am showcasing urban structures through a new process driven methodology by challenging type driven structural responses. I explored conflict between architectural priorities and structural efficiencies; celebrating structural adaptations that creates a rich tectonic expression, complex spatial configurations, and new program relationships.

{ Narrative } My whole life I have been dealing with Dyslexia. This is why I decided to challenge the conceptual design practice of a developing a learning center. I am focusing on the practice of ‘Leave-In’ instead of ‘Pull-Out’. By using the SFUSD Education List I was able to map schools and the level of teaching services they provide. Using this information and my design process, I was able to develop a Design Vocabulary. Based of my personal experience I decided to focused on the inauguration futures of my main program categories; Classrooms, Physical Education, Auditorium, Library, and the Arts.

{ Objective } emphasize the design process and rule driven design methodology. Students will develop two through four dimensional drawings and experiment with model making techniques based on specific methods of design. { Narrative } Culinary and Parkour Center is an experimental space that explores the mutation of activity informed through the process of coagulation, where liquid substances harden over time. The program is shaped by the layering of the skin, which inherits the attributes of the behavioral conditions that bifurcate or fluctuate spaces. The circulation and movement through these programmed areas are denoted by the behavioral response of the skin enabling a sense of division throughout the various pathways and routes within.
