NAMIB DESERT BEETLE RECREATING THE FORM

COMPARATIVE BOARD The Namib Desert Beetle collects water on its back, which is drained to its mouth using gravity.

Both overall topography and microscopic texture are important in controlling the water.

Water droplets form on the hydrophillic peaks, until they grow large enough to fall into the hydrophobic trough and drain efficiently. Hydrophobic trough

By manipulating topography and material properties, i can control vegetation types, which provides an opportunity to produce a more diverse ecology of ora.

ORIGINAL SITE

Here, different thicknesses of substrate correspond to topography to control water retention and therefore vegetation type.

“The huts were knocked down, now its just a fake landscape - modernisation for the worse. I walk my dog here every day in the summer, and not at all in the winter, it’s too windy. ASBOs cause limitation after nine.” “We’re set up here to avoid the police, so that the homeless don’t have to worry... opposite is the only homeless shelter in Rhyl. There’s only eight beds they have to kick you out after five days...”

“its all just druggies over here... people come up from Manchester, Brum and stoke to deal... All the Rhyl people live in the hills.”

‘’Adults can go to the pub in their spare time, but where can the children go?”

“Business is quite good... It is quite boring here.”

“The first thing you see when you enter Rhyl is two abandoned buildings. Apparently, one is being demolished in a week, and its a grade two listed building.”
