I have recently completed a Masters of Architecture (Professional) degree from the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth after completing my Bachelor of Architectural Studies at the same institution in 2017. I am currently seeking employment as a Candidate Architect to be able to register as a Professional Architect after completing the required SACAP candidate program. I am a self-motivated and determined individual with strong leadership skills. These skills are accompanied by good interpersonal communication skills, the ability to adapt to various situations as well as being cooperative in environments where efficient team work is essential. I have the ability to learn new skills at a fast pace and enjoy taking on a challenge in the pursuit to continue to grow as a young architect. While studying at Nelson Mandela University I was part of the Department of Architecture’s Orientation Team, a student assistant in various subjects as well as a student tutor during my final year of studies. I have also been part of a design-build project and a team leader for a design exhibition in my second year of undergraduate studies. I have the ambition to start my own firm in the future and my intention is to develop into a successful architect while contributing positively to any position that I am placed into and therefor; I humbly ask that you consider contacting me if there are any vacant positions in your company that you are looking to fill with a young and passionate aspiring architectural graduate.

(5th Year Master’s Treatise Design Project 2019) Studio Masters: Andrew Palframan and Bryan Wintermeyer The Apartheid government initiated plans to have the residents of a diverse, cosmopolitan suburb removed and relocated to other areas of Port Elizabeth under the Group Area Act. As a result of this, almost the entire South End was demolished. This suburb has been redeveloped since its demolition and only a few traces of the horrific past are still evident in the suburb today. This treatise investigated ideas on identity, culture and place in order to establish an identity for the lost community of South End; which this treatise labeled as a “South End-ness.

The current proposal by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) to develop a social housing scheme within the suburb was the driver behind an architectural product for this project. The MBDA proposal was thus critiqued and this critique was used as an objective standard from which to determine the appropriateness and relevance of this treatise. The aim of this treatise was therefore to produce an inclusive housing model for South End, rooted in a South End identity, which is relevant and appropriate. This was achieved through literature reviews, contextual analyses and precedent studies in order to find an appropriate strategy for designing an inclusive housing model in South End, Port Elizabeth.

(4th Year Design Project 2018) Studio Masters: Bobhan Varghese and Graeme Eckley The Port Elizabeth city center is suffering from large scale urban decay that was caused by a variety of factors that included the mass exodus of businesses and households that had previously filled the once bustling precinct in the city’s not too distant past and as a result the city center is an isolated entity that is situated at the base of a natural escarpment and below the artificial freeways that were constructed in the 1960’s.

The site is situated along the base of the escarpment along Govan Mbeki Road and slopes down from the back of the site to the front by 13m and as such the site became a critical design constraint from the offset. The location of the site along Govan Mbeki Road is in close proximity to the Russel Road Taxi Rank and thus the site experiences a large amount of foot traffic daily and thus the architectural intervention would need to respond appropriately to this large amount of foot traffic. The project aimed to produce a catalytic architectural intervention that is responsive to the urban environment and contributes positively to the formation of an urban green corridor.

PROJECT 03

Page 18

(4th Year Design Project 2018) Studio Masters: Bobhan Varghese and Graeme Eckley Port Elizabeth is located along the edge of major migration routes of various marine animals and this explains the city’s historical connection to whaling and why it is considered to be the Bottlenose Dolphin capital of the world. The waters surrounding the Cape Recife Point act as a calfing bay for various whale species. This heritage focused project explored literature and ideas around intangible heritage values, natural / ecological heritage aspects and built heritage regulations in South Africa in order to create a design response that placed an emphasis on the findings.

The site is located within the Cape Recife Lighthouse precinct and is in a constant state of change that is determined by the natural environment. The site has limited human intervention and thus the natural order and processes form a main design informant for the project, for example; the sand dunes are in a state of constant change and the name “driftsands” is attributed to this effect and can be found on maps that label the empty southern part of Algoa Bay as the “driftsands”. The discovery of Khoisan fish-traps at Cape Recife Point had a monumental impact on the story of the Strandloper as these remains provided evidence that Port Elizabeth was the most easterly point of Strandloper habitation. The tangible remains of Khoisan inhabitants on site offered an opportunity to look critically at the intangible heritage that remains on site through three main ideas; the memory, the lifestyle and the relationship with the natural environment. The architectural intervention aimed to create a strong “sense of memory” that is in harmony with the natural systems that shape the site as well as provide a research station that is unobtrusive to the marine life as well as the natural environment.

(4th Year Design Project 2018) Studio Masters: Bobhan Varghese and Graeme Eckley The Baakens Valley stretches from Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs to the city’s harbour on the east and is a strong ecological corridor for the city. A significant problem in the Baakens Valley is the high number of invasive alien plants that prevent the indigenous vegetation from thriving due to the copious amounts of water and nutrients these alien plants absorb as well as the fast growth rate that these plants experience. It was discovered that the invasive plant problem was not an isolated issue within one precinct of the Baakens Valley and as such the design intervention had to address the potential of a larger clearing area.

The focus of this project was placed on the ecological realm in the architectural discourse and as such literature written by Gary Grant was investigated to determine a key set if design informants that would respond to various ecosystem services. Furthermore, modular component design strategies were explored that would form the basis of a highly tectonic exploration for the project. The project aimed to produce a building that is totally self-sufficient, ecologically sensitive and able to be disassembled and relocated to a different predetermined location within the valley after the previous area of the valley has been cleared of alien vegetation.

PROJECT 01 (2nd Year Design Project 2016) Studio Masters: John Andrews and Barry Bradley The second year design studio was given a brief to design a 5-star boutique hotel and spa in the Tsitsikamma nature reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Four of the student designs were then selected and developed further to present at an exhibition in Port Elizabeth at the end of 2016. The exhibition presented a set of presentation drawings, concept models and final design models. My design was selected as one of the four student works that would be developed and as such I was selected as a team leader in this exhibition project.

The project attempted to “touched the earth lightly” as well as appear in harmony with nature through a selection of natural materials while contrasting the natural landscape through a rigid and highly geometric form. The wrapping of space allowed an intimate connection with the rock to occur where the visitor to the building would find themselves living on top of the rock, next to the rock and floating above the rock . The natural materials further aimed to contrast the hard nature of the rock formation.

The project titled “The Sheathing of an [Un]tamed Nature” aimed to wrap around and over a linear rock outcrop that protruded into the Indian ocean that was conceptually a single sheet of paper that was folded in numerous ways to create varieties in space that ranged from very inside to extremely outside.

(1st Year Design Project 2015) Studio Master: Ernst Struwig The first year design studio under Ernst Struwig undertook a research program in architectural composition from 2013 to 2015. The research program presented 36 villas of the renaissance architect Adrea Palladio (1508 - 1580) and the 36 houses from international and national architects from the 20th and 21st centuries which reflect on the similarities and differences of work from different centuries placed in direct conversation through 432 exhibition pieces which are all realised by hand. The Palladian Villa presented is a type of ideal Villa design that Villa Barbaro (1560 - 1570) was based on. The work included a plan and elevation drawing in pencil, a volumetric axonometric drawing in pencil, a compositional investigation in pen and a plan and elevation model constructed in grey cardboard.

PROJECT 03

(2nd Year Design Project 2016) Master in Charge: John Andrews X = PLACE The 2nd year design class at the Nelson Mandela University Department of Architecture had put together an installation for the Afrikaburn Arts Festival. The architectural content explored the issue of separation and place in architecture. The installation consisted of a dividing wall (made from hessian fabric and manila rope), which separated a forest of paper tubes. When the artifact was burnt the wall fell, selected paper tubes burnt and finally the remainder of the forest was illuminated, and revealed a circular space concerned with gathering and unity.

A tensile approach was selected because of its portability and structural efficiency. The materials were then further informed by cost, environmental impact, expression and “burnability”. In the detailing process of the project it was decided to produce a steel-less construction (no bolts, no nuts, no washers, no screws) which creates a structure that is entirely burnable, with the intention of leaving no trace. (Adapted from Nelson Mandela University Department of Architecture 2016)

What was once a condition of separation becomes a condition of place through the process of burning.........X marks the spot.
