President’s Note

On February 26, we held a Grand Opening event in Kaohsiung to celebrate the launch of Horizon’s Premier 130+. To us, this vessel is the biggest yacht we have ever built and also represents the most effort we have ever put into one project. With the Premier 130 +, we can easily appreciate the beauty of the yacht, the fine level of craftsmanship, the highly functional engineering systems, and all that goes into a luxury yacht. But most importantly, I believe, and what I would like to share here, is the Horizon spirit behind the scenes. Our people showed a strong will to overcome all kinds of challenges, great passion to keep the project moving along, good skills and the depth of experience necessary to cope with difficulties, and fine teamwork to smooth the building process. I am proud to say that they have achieved the goal of producing a yacht unlike anything ever before built in Kaohsiung . This project began more than four years ago with the idea of developing a large, new series of Horizon yachts. Meanwhile, an entirely new shipyard–Premier Yacht –purpose-built for the construction of megayachts, was also just beginning. Today, the Premier Yacht shipyard, showcasing the latest in modern shipyard design, is the newest element in the Horizon Group. The completion of the first yacht in the Premier 130+ Series is a remarkable milestone for Horizon Group. We expect that the success of this model will lead Horizon Group to become one of the major megayacht builders on the world stage. John Lu CEO of Horizon Group

Horizon's Announcement

One Brand Five Series Many Yachts Horizon reorganizes the five model lines under a single brand

Consistent with its business model for expansion, Horizon Group has been extending its product line and developing various model series ranging from 52 feet to 163 feet to satisfy the vastly different requirements and demands from its global customers. These models are differentiated by their unique styles and distinctive features, yet not all models have had the same names or been available around the world. In order to better organize the growing family of Horizon styles and models for today’s yachtsmen, all models are now being branded under one of five series banners: Elegance, Vision, Premier, Bandido, and Sportfisher. Elegance Series is the new name of the original Horizon series models that are known for their modern and European exterior styling and high-quality performance. This model covers the full lineup from 60 feet to 120 feet and includes various motoryacht types, such as open flybridge, raised pilothouse, enclosed skylounge and cockpit, etc. Premier Series is the name for all custom-built, tri-deck megayachts produced in various ranges for boats beyond 105 feet. Vision Series, ranging from 64 feet to 84 feet, features a more traditional and classical appearance and well-appointed spacious interior accommodation. The second type of these vessels, featuring a cockpit, will be delivered to the U.S. this year. Bandido Series is an expedition-type yacht available from 66 feet to 148 feet for long range cruising. Sportfisher Series, originally developed for Asian sportfishing clients, has been revamped to satisfy the convertible client who enjoys both the yachting and fishing life. Currently a 52-footer is available. Horizon Group expects to fulfill all yachtsmen’s dreams by developing new products that will fill in the various model ranges and types, but promises that it won’t be limited to just the current five series offerings. Horizon will keep moving forward, matching global yacht markets and trends !

DESIGNER’S COMMENT The inspiration for the new Horizon Elegance 88 derives from my earlier designs for Horizon Yachts in the 76’ to 105’ range. Over the years these designs have proven to be both successful and appreciated by customers. The design brief from Horizon Yachts was for a new contemporary style 88’ creation which had to combine a modern seaworthy hull with a sleek superstructure, whilst retaining the family resemblance to the other yachts in the series. The intention is not to replace but rather compliment the existing models. My vision with this new design is to catch a younger clientele, whose taste is typically more modern, but still with a keen eye for the classical lines together with the solid quality one expects from a Horizon yacht. The most challenging aspect of remodelling the superstructure was to offer clients the option of having a nice sky lounge. The yacht is going to be built in two versions – with and without Sky lounge. This gives the clients the opportunity to tailor their yacht to their specific requirements. I am definitely convinced that this new Horizon Elegance 88 model will be appreciated by customers worldwide and a worthy member of the Horizon family.

The Elegance 76 and 82 foot motoryachts designed by John Lindblom have been among Horizon’s most popular models. Now that 15-year tradition continues with the release of plans for the long-awaited Elegance 88. The first impression of the Elegance 88 design is how well the skylounge harmonizes with the yacht’s profile. A successful skylounge motoryacht must be much more than a motoryacht with an enclosed flying bridge. Not only must the proportions be pleasing in profile, the skylounge/bridge must provide truly a useable and luxurious space without compromising the seakeeping qualities of the vessel. To complete the package, the main deck must also be reconfigured to take full advantage of the extra space afforded by moving the inside helm station to the upper deck. The design of the new Elegance 88 does all this and more. Its hull is performance oriented. The sharp bow entry angle transitions smoothly to a well-balanced semiplanning bottom aft to provide low resistance. A unique concave shape in the midsection gives good maneuverability in calm or rough seas. Horizon tank-tested this design at SSPA, the top test facility in Sweden. Besides the regular resistance tests, which collect parameters for power and speed calculations, Horizon’s engineers also put the model through an irregular wave test to measure the seakeeping behavior of a boat encountering waves. Human comfort criteria and deck wetness is then recorded and analyzed. And this hull is proven to have excellent performance in every aspect. The interior layout inherits the theme of the Elegance 82, providing unbroken sightlines on the main deck from the aft deck lounge through the salon to the country kitchen. Twin staircases descending to the swim platform gently wrap the aft seating area. On the lower deck the accommodations feature an amidships full-beam master stateroom, a VIP stateroom opposite and two guest staterooms in between. All staterooms feature private bathrooms. Crew accommodations and working spaces are segregated from the owner and guest areas aft of the engine room to provide maximum privacy. On the upper deck, the skylounge features a well-protected helm station where the owner or crew can enjoy operating the boat regardless of the weather and socialize with guests at the same time. An extended aft deck provides ample space for tender stowage and a well-designed alfresco bar, sure to be a popular spot to watch the sunset over cocktails. Horizon’s all new 88 Skylounge Motoryacht delivers the true spirit of “Elegance” without compromise. DEFINE YOUR HORIZON®

A Magical Trip down under Aboard

Magician

Story and photos by Mark Mckay, owner of “Magician” Editor’s note: MARK and JENNY McKAY purchased a new 73-foot Horizon at Australia’s Sanctuary Cove Boat Show and decided to take her home to Perth on her own bottom. Home being more than 4,000 miles away, this was no ordinary shakedown cruise. After much deliberation, they christened their yacht Magician for the lifechanging experiences they expected the boat would bring. Here are some of the highlights of a truly remarkable cruise in their own words.

6

www.horizonyacht.com

While Jenny and I enjoyed this experience immensely, we truly believe that our children are the ones that grew most from our trip. The things these children saw and experienced will be with them for a lifetime. Our trip over the top of Australia started September 1, 2007, when we departed from Sanctuary Cove, Queensland. . .destination Perth, Western Australia, literally the other side of our island continent. We were very fortunate to have two skippers aboard. Jeff Ralston, the owner of Kimberley Quest, a charter yacht that operates out of Broome, travelled aboard our boat until Darwin. Sam Lyons, who also worked for Kimberley Quest, was our skipper for the duration of the trip. Although our voyage began with poor, spring weather, for the remainder of the journey we experienced almost ideal conditions with ver y few uncomfortable days. And fortunately, when we did experience bad weather, we were lucky enough to be either in the Whitsundays or the Kimberleys, where you could find shelter among islands or a river. Our first port of call was Airlie Beach, where we spent a few days recovering from bad weather (the crew on board wanting a bit of time out because of it!) before we headed to Hamilton Island to pick up Jenny and my two sons, Cody and Casey, on September 4. Here we spent a few days picking up and dropping off friends that were spending time with us, lingering around Hamilton Island where the kids made the most of the island’s activities such as jet boats and buggy rides. At Hook Island in the Nara Inlet, we found a beautiful waterfall and an aboriginal cave. This island was also the place that my wife experienced sandflies for the first time.

After picking up another friend and his daughter, we headed for Whitehaven Beach where we came across the ruins of a sand castle competition where there were about 500 meters of professionally built sand castles. The next couple of days found us at locations such as Gloucester Passage, where we all went snorkelling and then out to the Great Barrier Reef. Our youngest son had an experience he won’t forget when I hooked a 10-foot grey shark nurse from the dinghy. I had to reel it in to get control and take it back to Magician to set it free. There were a few tears and anxious moments from my son when he thought the shark would end up in the dinghy with us. But, to his credit, just an hour later he was back in the water snorkelling on the reef just 700 feet from where I hooked the shark. Another of our overnight stops was at picturesque Orpheous Island. We befriended a local fisherman and were lucky enough to purchase bulk prawns from him; delicious! After negotiating the Hinchinbrook passage, it was on to Dunk Island for a few days of relaxation and a rainforest walk; the boys enjoyed lots of tube riding and the resort’s swimming pool and restaurants.

Sailing “Magician” home to Perth was a very unforgettable experience for us all and the things that these children saw and experienced will be with them for a lifetime.

Arriving at Cairns, the authorities placed us in the Super Yachts section of the marina. This was an awesome experience as we soon discovered that our massive (to us) boat was actually a baby in comparison to what we were berthed amongst! We were right between two 130-footers. On the opposite side of us was another privately owned yacht that absolutely dwarfed us, measuring in at approximately 120 meters! She had 30 full-time crew.

7

CruisingDestination We refuelled at Cairns and prepared for the big trip around Cape York and into the Indian Ocean. We spent several days cleaning, shopping for stores and performing general maintenance. Assured that the boat was ready for anything, Jenny, the kids, and I departed and returned home to Perth. A new crew joined Jeff and Sam to run the boat around to Darwin, where Jenny and I would meet up with them again. The trip around Australia’s top end was surprisingly unadventurous with calm seas and per fect winds. For the boys on board it was a bit of a challenge, however, as generator problems left them without air conditioning for part of the trip. Once Magician arrived in Darwin, the Horizon team went straight to work on the air conditioner problem and we were underway within 10 days. Jeff left the boat in Darwin to head back to Kimberley Quest and it was thanks to him, his encouragement, and refuelling from Kimberley Quest II that our adventure was possible.

Our crew through the Kimberleys consisted of Jenny, the kids and me, our skipper Sam, Allana a very good friend of ours, and Patrick, another good friend who had joined us in Cairns and ended up doing the remainder of the trip with us until Broome. The time spent travelling through the Kimberleys on Australia’s northwest coast was an experience that none of us will forget. There were the most remarkable sights from crocodiles to mud crabs and from waterfalls to whirlpools. In some areas the isolation left us feeling that we were the only people in the world. Then the next day or around the corner we’d meet the most amazing people, it was all very overwhelming. Whale activity was another awe-inspiring part of our journey as we travelled the coast at the time of year when the whales are at their most active. We saw pods of up to 15 whales playing in the ocean. One time we pulled into a bay to search for oysters and came across a mother whale and her baby. The baby was very inquisitive and kept trying to approach our fishing boat.

Every time it did, the mother would gently nudge it away from us. After the calf trying this several times, the mother then took control of him by tossing him on her back with one flip of her powerful fin and then slowly piggybacking him away from us. It was amazing and unforgettable.

8

www.horizonyacht.com

With champagne, beer and endless amounts of oohs and aahs flowing, our visitors were very impressed with our Horizon 73. We towed our fishing boat from Wyndham to Broome and this proved to be a fantastic decision that enabled us to go up parts of the rivers too small or shallow for Magician to navigate. Because of this, our fishing endeavours proved very successful as well: Allana easily graduated from novice status, and Casey, our youngest, ended up with the nickname ‘Shark Hunter,’ after pulling in about 12 sharks in total. Our skipper, Sam, had years of experience up his sleeve and knowledge of all the best fishing spots. At the Saille River we said goodbye to Allana and hello to our oldest son, Chad, and refuelled from the Kimberley Quest. We put out our fenders and pulled up gently alongside the charter yacht where Jeff had 18 guests. As we pulled alongside the Kimberley Quest they were all in awe of our beautiful new boat, so, needless to say, once in position for refuelling, they all came on board to have a look. With champagne, beer and endless amounts of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ flowing, our visitors were very impressed with our Horizon 73. The ladies were particularly impressed with the quality of workmanship of the interior woodwork, bathrooms and galley, while the gentlemen took particular interest in the impressive engine room. After a fantastic few hours together, we bid the K imberley Quest and her guests adieu and continued on our way. From there we steamed toward the Horizontal Waterfalls and then on to One Arm Point, near Cape Levique. My brother lives at One Arm Point so we decided to drop anchor

for a few days and take advantage of his local knowledge of all the best fishing spots. Unfortunately, while in this area we experienced major tidal movements with the tides fluctuating up to nine meters. This meant that the fishing was just average and while we didn’t have any success, in this department, it was amazing to experience these major tidal movements. With the water rushing in and out of the inlets between the islands, the ocean was an actual mass of whirlpools, which makes boating quite hazardous for the inexperienced. We tried to capture this in photographs, but photos just do not do this sort of natural wonder justice.

The first Magician trip took 2 months and 4,500 nautical miles from Sanctuary Cove, Queensland to Perth, west Australia.

After our dismal effort fishing at One Arm Point we headed to Broome to prepare the boat for the final stretch home to Perth. Jenny, the kids and I departed for Perth a couple of days after arriving in Broome. For Sam, it was his first break in approximately nine weeks as he had arrived in Sanctuary Cove a few weeks before us. He was glad to have a bit of home time after so long at sea. Two weeks later I returned to Broome accompanied by five good friends from Kalgoorlie, which gave us a crew of seven. We had been following the weather reports and we knew what was in store for us. Things were not looking good, but we had a schedule to keep. At the beginning of the trip everyone was in very high spirits. It was not long before those feelings of excitement turned to feelings of nausea as we encountered waves that were pounding over the bow and winds that reached up to 55 knots. We took a beating, but through all of it Magician behaved beautifully. We could not have been more impressed with this boat in regards to handling any conditions that Mother Nature decided to throw at us. I decided that things must be pretty bad when I arose at 1 a.m. to relieve our faithful skipper, and found him at the wheel with a bucket between his legs! At that point we decided to pull in at LongIsland, northeast of Exmouth, to

rest and recoup. Eight hours later we were underway again, headed to Exmouth where we spent a couple of days making repairs to our Inverter and a few other weather-related problems while waiting for conditions to clear. When we realised that this wasn’t going to happen, we bit the bullet and steamed off again. The weather remained positively shocking until we reached Geraldton where, thankfully, the ocean calmed and everybody’s spirits lifted. We p u l l e d i n to Pe r t h a t H i l l a r y s B o a t H a r b o u r o n November 3, 2007, to a flurr y of excitement and an air of celebration. We had made it, and we had made it memorable. It had taken us approximately nine weeks to get home, burning 55,000 liters of fuel, travelling 4,300 nautical miles, and racking up endless memories, these being just a few. We owe thanks to Sam Lyons, our loyal skipper, to Jeff Ralston, without whom this trip would not have been possible, and to all those that travelled with us on our adventure. But most importantly, gratitude to the Horizon team at Sanctuary Cove who was there as quickly as we needed them for anything. From spare parts to good advice, their support was very much appreciated. And to the Horizon Group: Thank you, thank you for building such a magnificent boat.

Boot D端sseldorf 2008

The 2008 D端sseldorf International Boat Show was held on Jan. 19-27, 2008. About 279,000 people from 65 countries attended this event, which took place at the Trade Fair Center in D端sseldor f, Germany.

A group consisting of Horizon staff members from the business, engineering and R&D departments of the three shipyards, Horizon, Vision and Premier, attended the show and were shown around by John Lu, CEO of the Horizon Group.

Drettmann, the Horizon dealer in Europe, occupied the biggest booth in the largest hall reserved for demonstration of mega yachts. The display included six Horizon models: Elegance 54, 60, 70, 88, 97 and Bandido 75. The Elegance 97 RPH was the largest boat in the dry show.

The large Horizon Group banner could be easily identified representing the Horizon model series Elegance and Bandido at the show.

Boot D端sseldorf 2008 The booth was a 100m x 22.5m (330 ft x 74 ft) elevated platform at waterline level of the boats displayed. Reception and meeting rooms were on the lower level and the main display area was on top. Comfortable sofas provided an excellent location for relaxing conversation. Drinks and snacks served by waitresses from the central bar provided total comfort. The image was created of being in a gallery appreciating master pieces produced by Horizon. Another special feature at the D端sseldorf show was the demonstration of superior accessories directly at the booth. Showcasing distinguished boating accessories helps clients put together an entire package for their Horizon yacht.

PeopleProfile

JC Espinosa

Designer of Horizon’s Premier 130+

Horizon Group often reaches out to acclaimed yacht design professionals from Europe or North America for assistance. Sometimes it is for a “tweak” or a nuance; sometimes it is for an entire set of plans or engineering drawings. In this issue of the Horizon newsletter, we introduce you to the stylist behind several refinements to Horizon yachts as well as the interior design and exterior styling of the Horizon’s Premier 130+, Juan Carlos Espinosa.

There is an interesting anecdote about how JC Espinosa came to be involved in the design of Horizon’s new projects. At the end of 2003, and during a long flight from one of the many boat shows Hor izon attended, John Lu, CEO of the Horizon Group and Carl French who is the original U.S. Horizon distributor, were flipping through magazines looking for design ideas for a new line of larger motoryachts which will would be built at a future branch of the Horizon Group . . . Premier Yachts. As the stor y goes, both John and Carl each independently chose a few yachts they really liked from the magazines, and when it came to show each other their selections, they discovered that these yachts had something in common– they were all designed by JC Espinosa!

Nicaraguan-born Juan Carlos Espinosa is a licensed, registered architect in both Florida and Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Architecture and Urban Planning degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1985. JC, (as he is known in the industry), was first exposed to the field of yacht design while employed by a Chicago architectural firm commissioned to design “Time” which in 1985 was the largest aluminum megayacht constructed in the United States. He admits that he was fascinated by the challenge of applying architectural design principles to vessels. In 1990, he moved to sunny Stuart, Florida, where he still resides today and where his design office is located. JC has two sons who are contemplating pursuing their dad’s chosen career path and perhaps joining JC’s practice in the future. Collaborative efforts between Horizon and Espinosa Inc., began in early 2004 with the design of a new 130’ tri-deck motoryacht. It also happens that JC showed the design to a previous client who ended up commissioning the first hull, demonstrating that JC had confidence that the Horizon Group would do an excellent job on this first build. The first Premier 130+ was launched late last year too much fanfare from the press and interest from prospective clients alike. In fact, the design of this yacht has been so well received that at present there are four more yachts being built from the same mold. The second design, Horizon’s Elegance 120-foot raised pilothouse model, has also met with success and there are currently two of these under construction. JC and Horizon have expanded their collaborative efforts and are developing new models, raging in size from 100 feet, all the way to 163 feet, including Horizon’s newest line, Bandido Explorer Yachts.

Behind the Scenes of a “Very Big” Story We can. We will. We do - thanks to the entire Premier team!

Sunday morning March 30, 2008 dawned clear and cool. The first Premier 130 + Miss Rose which is also the largest FRP motoryacht ever built by Taiwan’s yachting industry is loading aboard a freighter to Port Everglades, Florida, in the USA. Getting to this moment was a huge undertaking for Horizon and all of those who have been aboard for the development of our company. Let’s go back to summer of 2003 when a pair of yachting enthusiasts, Gord Galbraith from GCMNA and James Fwu from Horizon, flew to San Diego, California, just for a look at the initial sketch of what would become the Premier 130+ by yacht designer JC Espinosa. From that moment on, Horizon was committed to a new flagship. From summer 2003 to spring 2005, after careful, planning, design, engineering and consultation with our dealers, Horizon chose to commit the S130 design to the highest construction standard: DNV +1A1 LC R0, Yacht certification and MCA LY2 code compliance. Typically, such high standards are reserved for yachts over 150 feet or 400 GT measurements. With the design and construction standards in place, the project could be announced to Horizon owners, the media and the yachting world. But would this bold initiative find acceptance? Horizon did not have to wait long for an answer. During the summer of 2005, a contract for the first 130–footer was signed in Taiwan by a U.S. owner. This customer was not a current Horizon owner, but after years of searching, he recognized that not only this beautiful design but that also the Horizon shipyard team would be the best choice to make his dream of the perfect yacht come true. So, how did the Premier team make a dream come true? As Hull # 1 of the Premier 130+ Series, Miss Rose is, indeed, a remarkable product.

Firstly, all of her composite parts were built by the patented resin infusion SCRIMP Process. On September 21, 2005, the hull lamination started and three months later, the completed structure was recognized as the world’s largest one-piece marine composite structure ever created via vacuum infusion. Over 12 tons of resin were infused by SCRIMP technology in one shot–within four hours–creating the hull’s skin and sandwich construction together with all frames and stiffeners. The entire construction process was presented to the industry in Paris at the 2005 JEC Seminar, the world’s largest composites show, where it was lauded as a milestone for such construction technology. Secondly, there is her unique, completely custom-made Interior. Short of impacting the class rules or modifying the molded structure, the shipyard worked closely with the owners, revising original plans to help the owners of Miss Rose create a dream layout. Under the main deck forward they located three crew cabins plus a crew lounge and captain’s stateroom plus a laundry separated by water tight doors from mechanical spaces and guest areas. A central spiral staircase connects the guest accommodation area with its three guest suites to the main deck and continues to the bridge deck. The main deck is arranged with a forward master stateroom followed by the galley, dining area and salon. A second master stateroom is located on the bridge deck aft with a study and pilothouse forward. The owners selected every piece of marble, granite and onyx used through the vessel and even flew to the world-famous marble cutting center, Hwa-Lien county in eastern Taiwan, three times to personally approve the bookmatched patterns prior to cutting the stone. Thirteen different kinds of stone were selected for this project, including Rainbow Jade for the foyer, Yellow Crystal and Yellow Jade for the master baths, elegant Emperador Light for the VIP, and a striking Bordeaux for other guest areas. In addition, the owner and his representative visited Premier shipyard 21 times during the yacht’s construction. And finally, it culminated with a successful sea trial. On January 8, 2008, Miss Rose cruised outside of Kaohsiung Harbor into the Taiwan Strait carrying a full load of 11,000 gallons of fuel and 1,400 gallons of water, plus 20 Premier crew, the DNV surveyor team and the owner’s reps, and successfully completed official sea trial. Powered by twin Caterpillar C32A 1,825 BHP engines, in Sea State 4, the yacht recorded an average speed over 16.5 knots at 2375 rpm and power to spare. A lot of people were involved in the completion of this yacht, and Horizon offers special thanks to Captain Thomas Wilson, the master of Miss Rose, who spent 10 months in Taiwan to help this project meet the owner’s expectations. After 30 months gestation, Premier Yacht is ready to present Miss Rose to the world while the team in Taiwan dedicate themselves to completing the next 130–this one with a totally different design style is scheduled to launch in May 2008. Let’s expect another excellent piece of art at sea!
