President’s Note

A short time ago, we held a farewell ceremony for a retiring employee who has worked for us for 17 years. We wanted to publicly thank him for his valuable service and wish him well in his brand-new retired life. This ceremony was a first for us, but we foresee having more activities to bestow our appreciation on our hard-working employees and let everyone realize their contribution to the Horizon Group. I think our “Human Resources” are the most important elements in our corporation, whatever their duties are. Therefore, as a leader of the Horizon Group, I am always thinking about providing for the well-being of the employees. That includes creating a good work environment, an incentive promotion system, prospects for the growth of the company, and taking our employees’ career development into consideration. We not only wish to take care of every employee’s needs and development at the present stage, but also hope our superannuation scheme can demonstrate commitment to them. I believe that those workers who have been with us through our development stage, helping us meet and overcome every challenge, should share the positive results of their hard work as well. Horizon Group is bringing a new model line to the market, the Bandido Series. Bandido is an expedition type of vessel, perfectly suited for those looking for a sturdy and seaworthy yacht capable of long journeys. The concept for this series was developed during discussions between Horizon Group’s CEO, John Lu, and his old friend Albert Drettmann, the Horizon dealer in the European region, about their vision of the yachting lifestyle. They decided that an expedition-type yacht, one that exceeded the ability of the common trawler, was needed to complete the lineup of Horizon models.

While some seek speed and excitement in yachting, others enjoy calm and relaxing encounters with Mother Nature during a long cruise. Bandido is the perfect vessel to satisfy customers in this segment. Inside her classic and magnificent wide body is a cozy and spacious living area outfitted with naturally finished joinery that helps relax the weary soul. In addition, with her impressive sea keeping ability and robust construction, the yacht makes her passengers feel as comfortable as if they never left land.

Bandido will take you cruising across the horizon to experience and explore the other side of the world. The design brief included a request for a full-volume vessel with ship-like systems but interiors styled like megayachts and a contemporary edge to the profile. As the first model of the Bandido series, the 75-footer with a 21-foot beam features a full-beam master amidships, a forward full-beam VIP room and two guest cabins in between. The main deck has walkaround side decks rising to a Portuguese bridge surrounding the raised pilothouse, which also includes a social seating area. For those who like outdoor entertainment while underway, the flybridge provides a wideopen area to enjoy the sunshine and time together with family or friends. The spacious stern conceals the owner’s tender and toys in a substantial garage adjacent to a lazarette and a crew cabin. In the standard arrangement, a starboard side foyer divides the pilot house from the spacious salon and dining area while a large enclosed galley is to port. The Bandido presents an elegant new face to the expedition yacht genre.

Each magnificent achievement involves the efforts of many people in its success. Gregory C. Marshall, a Canadian-born naval architect, is one of the significant players behind the scenes of the Horizon Group’s high quality and customer satisfaction. Since setting up his own design firm, Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects (GCMNA), 14 years ago, he has been involved in some of the most successful large yacht projects around the world. In 2006, the recruitment of a new partner, Gordon Galbraith, has elevated GCMNA to its current success. With 21 employees, today GCMNA is one of the larger yacht design firms in the industry and specializes in yacht projects from 40 feet to 230 feet for construction in all hull materials. By applying cutting-edge 3-D graphics computer technology, GCMNA and Horizon Group have completed several successful projects together. The first was the 130-foot motor yacht project, which was a joint collaboration with J.C. Espinosa. The new 130

Hull #2 followed, wherein significant portions of the interior were digitally built prior to construction. The result, as Greg puts it, is one of the highest quality interiors of any vessel of any size. It does not matter where you look, the quality is VERY impressive. On this yacht, GCMNA provided the structural and mechanical engineering and the naval architecture as well as the interior layout. In addition, the GCMNAdesigned Vision 68 and 74 series are capturing the attention of many boat lovers. Most of them are impressed by their classic style as well as their spacious and cozy living spaces on board, which are rarely found in boats this size. The of fices of Gregor y C. Marshall Naval Architects have become an important part of the Horizon Group’s powerful formula for successfully delivering large, world-class motor yachts. Horizon Group is happily anticipating brainstorming more creative projects with GCMNA.

This year’s Horizon America display at the Palm Beach Boat Show was the largest Horizon line-up at any U.S. boat show and was by far the most varied with each of the models showing a different exterior design and completely different interior layouts and finishes to give potential customers a good idea of the many choices available at Horizon. Although the economy certainly has had an impact on the U.S. boating market, the show was still very encouraging from the Horizon perspective attracting customers who were new to Horizon seeing firsthand the quality, customization opportunities and workmanship and commenting very positively on the product. The owners of each of the yachts were on board during the entire show, providing valuable insights on the Horizon build process and final product. It is a tremendous benefit when a customer asks, “What does the owner like about Horizon” and the owners are right there to share their views about the boats and the dealers. Who better to explain how to "Define your Horizon" than those who already have.

How does the Horizon Group handle a rapid increase in orders? The answer is by relying on Atech Composites, a professional FRP composites manufacturer to cope with it! Atech Composites was founded in August 2000 by the Horizon Group and is responsible for providing all composite hulls and superstructures to three Horizon Group shipyards. Atech is the first FRP corporation in Asia to obtain licensing authorization for the patented SCRIMP process (Seemann’s Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process). This technology is used to produce all of the FRP composite parts in our yachts. Moreover, Atech is recognized as the first company in the world to complete a 130-foot, one-piece hull by using this resin-infusion technology. Atech is certified for meeting ISO9001:2000 standards by DNV. To insure consistency and quality, Atech owns a multi-purpose 10-ton Material Testing Machine to verify the mechanical properties of the composite materials it supplies. In addition, Atech has operated its own laboratory to test the fiberglass content of composite materials since 2006. Today Atech occupies a total of 249,070 sq.ft (23,140 square meters) and is still expanding. As one of the most important elements in building superior Horizon yachts, Atech has a high-level technical R&D team led by Jack Lee to consistently improve the quality of the composite hulls and superstructures. Meanwhile, in order to keep all the Horizon orders on track, the well-experienced factory chief Felix Lee controls all the production planning and quality. As a behind-the-scenes hero, Atech is the backbone of the Horizon Group.

It was a pleasant day and the bright sun lit up the Horizon shipyard on April 30, 2008. Colleagues and managers congregated awaiting the beginning of a special occasion with excitement, cheer and sentiment. It was a ceremony for Mr. Chung Min Hsiung’s retirement, a senior carpenter who has worked for Horizon for 17 years. With applause and cheers, Mr. Chung walked into the venue, holding a bunch of flowers and accepting everyone’s congratulations and good wishes. “Even though it is our first time to hold a ceremony like this,” CEO of the Horizon Group, John Lu, began in his opening speech, “we expect more activities to bestow our appreciation to our hard-working employees.” Mr. Chung studied woodworking classes during High School in the 1960s. He gained practical experience from several Swiss teachers. Before coming to work for Horizon, he had worked in several shipyards. Asked why he chose Horizon at last and worked here for the last 17 years of his career, he said “Horizon is a company, which provides a good environment to work,” the shy and courteous carpenter continued to say, “and the company truly values every employee.” He is now a grandfather with a big family. During his retirement, he has so many plans that he will become very busy trying to complete each one. With getting together with his grandchildren, farming and planting on his own land, and his rock collection, his retirement life will be full, indeed.

John Lu gives a souvenir to Mr. Chung to thank him for his contribution to Horizon.

The Horizon management sees off Mr. Chung and say farewell.
