A new vision for the future of cruising The New Vision 68 - Horizon Group’s Newest Model.

All components of the Vision 68 are SCRIMP® using Vinylester Resin and high quality stitched E-Glass ensuring the highest quality laminates and excellent strength.

The New Vision 68 - built beyond the industry standard, is the new model series of the Horizon Group. The construction of the entire Vision 68 is built beyond the requirements of DNV Classifications Society scantling requirements. Naval Architect Gregory C. Marshall engineered the Vision 68 structure to be lightweight and have excellent strength. Its smart molded parts fit together with high precision. The hull of the 68 utilizes a high-density core construction that not only creates a stiffer hull but also has the benefits of excellent impact resistance from floating debris, sound insulation for a quieter running hull and thermal insulation. With very smart part modeling, the structural components of the 68 fit together with a very high level of precision, basically eliminating the need to fair or mask the joints. This precision creates a fit and finish that puts the Vision 68 at the top of her Class for quality. Much more than simply a new motoryacht, the Vision 68 is more conservative in appearance than the other Horizons and embodies a new concept in cruising. The all-new 68 delivers extraordinary interior room and functional arrangement in a hull of exceptional balance and superb seakeeping ability. Built on a huge volume hull with four staterooms and four heads and showers, she's built to be run by an owner/operator but has room for a crew. The wide 20'6” beam and stand-up engine room makes her feel like an 85-footer yet with her innovative design, she's only 68' (actually 69'10-5/8”), allowing her to fit in smaller slips and be easily run by her owner. The large salon offers a wet bar and entertainment center, and a fully-equipped galley is located adjacent to a comfortable dining settee. A covered aft deck and broad bridge deck with grill and service bar allow for open-air lounging and entertaining. A choice of open or enclosed flybridge configurations accommodate virtually any cruising lifestyle. The Vision 68 is delivered ready to go cruising and the structure has been engineered and built to last a lifetime.

ON THE MOVE WITH

A milestone 82-foot Horizon motoryacht, was delivered to proud owners in 2006

Eddie Franco and Sarah Richardson enjoy happy hours with their friends aboard Sweet Sarah.

www.horizonyacht.com

This yacht is the first new build for owners Eddie Franco and Sarah Richardson and the first Horizon 82 to feature the optional wide-body design, where walk-around side decks make way for a full-beam main salon. “About three years ago as I was planning to retire we thought we wanted to live on an island in the Caribbean. I have an airplane so we flew down and visited a lot of islands. The problem was, we could not choose just one as our favorite above all others,” the Chicagoan recalls. “We thought of making Miami our winter base and then someone suggested a yacht. I’d never really thought about that.” After contacting Horizon America Yacht Sales – Eddie and Sarah agreed to inspect several Horizon models. “I loved all the wood in the interior. When Roger told me that an eighty-two footer had been started on spec and that we could finish it off to our taste, I was sold.” said Eddie.

“Being able to finish the yacht to my taste, that’s what sold me.” recalls Eddie

Sweet Sarah has as much maindeck entertainment space. When entering the salon through sliding glass doors, the appeal of making use of the vessel’s entire 20-foot beam for living space is instantly clear. Spacious and elegant, the inviting, multi-function salon features a wet bar in the aft starboard corner and offers plenty of space to entertain guests in luxury and comfort. Opposite the galley a starboard-side staircase leads to the fully enclosed sky lounge. In the starboard aft corner, an expansive L-shaped sofa and hi-lo table is ideally located to give the owners a full view of the route ahead. Another set of sliding glass doors links the sky lounge with a comfortable outdoor space on the upper aft deck featuring a wet bar, a barbecue grill and a corner sofa and table. The large deck leaves ample room for the RIB tender and its davit farther aft. Forward to port on main deck is the country galley with its stateof-the-art appliances, granite countertops and an abundance of storage. The galley opens on a spacious dinette area with ample seating for guests and offers a panoramic view forward. On either side of the dinette, pantograph doors give easy access to bow area seating. With the tender in the water, Eddie has room to enjoy another of his passions — golf. “We have a driving mat and three hundred floating golf balls. You can practice your swing to your heart’s content and then the crew go out in the tender and scoop up the balls,” says Eddie. cont’d on next page...

The vessel accommodates six guests in three en-suite staterooms forward. The full-beam master cabin has two heads, a walk-in closet and four vertical port lights for an abundance of natural light. Two crew cabins are located aft and can be accessed either from a staircase in the aft port corner of the salon or from the swim platform through a watertight transom door. Twin, 1,550hp CAT engines, power Sweet Sarah. Her three Glendinning control stations each feature remotes for hydraulic bow and stern thruster operation. Twin Onan generators provide AC power while at sea and twin PTOs from the gearboxes provide hydraulic power for the thrusters and stabilizers. As with all Horizon Yachts, the main hull and superstructure are manufactured using the patented SCRIMP infusion process to maximize strength, reduce weight and reduce harmful emissions from the FRP process. Immediately after commissioning Sweet Sarah was loaded on Dockwise Yacht Transport and sent to St. Thomas where the couple joined the yacht and cruised for the next five months, venturing as far south as St. Lucia. Eddie’s eight-passenger Pilatus PC-12 turbo-prop aircraft came in handy, allowing him to ferry a steady stream of guests from the major jetports to the yacht, which could then be moored at smaller, more picturesque islands. Proving that seaworthiness and luxury go hand-in-hand with Horizon, after the shortest of breaks from island-hopping, Sweet Sarah headed to Maine, stopping at many destinations en-route. “One of the stops was a tribute to my grandparents,” recalls Eddie. “They immigrated from Italy in 1904. They were so poor that when they arrived at Ellis Island they had no idea where they would sleep or if they could find anything to eat. Two generations later I sailed into New York harbor on my own yacht. It was a great experience for me and it proves how great this country is.”

In a celebratory gathering during the 2006 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Horizon America officially delivered an 82-foot Horizon cockpit motoryacht named Our Way to owners Lew and Linda Teffeau of Little River, South Carolina. Horizon’s East Coast dealership welcomed the Teffeaus into the Horizon family with personalized gifts such as a watercolor painting of Our Way, embroidered jackets, a dock cart and more. Our Way is the first new build for the Teffeaus and a step up in size from their previous vessels. After spending a great deal of time searching for the right builder to help create their ideal yacht and doing research for a number of years, a sea trial on the 82-foot Horizon motoryacht Five Shining Stars eventually turned the tide in their decisionmaking process. The sea-keeping ability of Horizon boats and the yard’s commitment to quality plus its flexible build program won the Teffeaus over to the Horizon fleet. The Teffeaus' new pride and joy is an 82-footer with a cockpit, an open bridge, four staterooms forward and two crew cabins aft. Working with Horizon’s design team, Lew Teffeau was able to realize his specific ideas for the exterior. Our Way’s cockpit is a multi functional area that can be used for fishing, active water sports, or just relaxing in the sun. An ingenious cockpit cabinet hides a barbecue grill that retracts when not in use. While the exterior spaces were developed “his way,” Linda chose all the furnishings, fabrics and accessories. Warm earth tones with rich accent colors and a wonderful sense of texture and materials coordination generated rave reviews for the yacht at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. The main deck salon, galley and dinette area on Our Way are completely open with no bulkheads to obscure the open feel of the yacht. The country galley area is bright, cheerful and ergonomically smart. After the show, the yacht was scheduled to leave Palm Beach for the Caribbean. Here, the owners and their family plan to spend the winter cruising the Virgin Islands before returning to the U.S. in springtime to explore the East Coast.

FeatureStory

Pacific Northwest resident Jack Darcy has years of cruising experience along the West Coast from Southeastern Alaska to the Southern tip of Mexico.

HORIZON 73

Having logged more than 4,000 hours over eight years in his 57foot Tollycraft, Jack knew what he was looking for in his next boat: A seaworthy and safe vessel for long ocean voyages, one, which he could manage by himself, if necessary. His wishes were fulfilled the first time he saw the 73-foot Horizon floating at the docks of Emerald Pacific Yachts in Seattle, Washington. This very first edition of the Horizon 73 made her U.S. debut in Seattle in the spring of 2004. Completely redesigned by naval architect Greg Marshall and Horizon’s in-house design team, the flush deck yacht is larger and sleeker than her predecessors. Featuring three spacious staterooms forward, including a master with en-suite head, plus a fourth stateroom aft suitable for crew or guests alike, the yacht can easily accommodate Jack’s large family as well as friends who enjoy joining him on different legs of his journeys. In honor of the camaraderie the boat was sure to foster, he named his boat Kinship. When asked what he likes best about his boat, Jack points to the outside spaces. He enjoys the swim platform, which is large enough to be considered a separate deck. He uses it for sunning, water sports, and boarding the tender, a 16 and a half-foot Nautilus AB tender with a

8

75-hp Yamaha, which serves for fishing and ferrying guests. He notes that the California-style aft deck is a wonderful spot to admire his cruising surroundings while enjoying a delicious dinner. Along with the pilothouse dinette, a settee in the salon and the flybridge, there are four areas on the boat for Jack and his guests to enjoy a gourmet meal or simple sandwich. The flybridge on the restyled Horizon 73 is 32 percent larger than on the previous model, providing plenty of room for entertaining, and ample space to stow a dinghy and PWC. Features include a large barbecue with wet bar, refrigerator and icemaker and seating for at least 12. A handsome hi-lo dining table and adjacent built-in seating suits outdoor dining on a large scale. Another of the improved features is the sleek, well-designed engine room with adjacent equipment room and electrical control area. From here, the engine room can be monitored through a viewing port away from noise and heat as well as through video monitors in the pilothouse and on the flying bridge. Cameras can also monitor the bridge and aft deck for security or ease of maneuvering short-handed. Horizons are, of course, known for their beautiful interior spaces, and Kinship receives countless compliments for the beautiful ribbon-cut mahogany joinery and the granite accents and surfaces in the galley and heads. Thanks to Horizon’s proven SCRIMP lamination system, solid-glass hull bottom construction and heavy-duty hardware, this vessel is as rugged and seaworthy as she is luxurious and comfortable. Jack takes her everywhere. Immediately after shakedown, Jack and Kinship went on an Alaska cruise covering over 3,000 miles. More often than not, he has met fellow Horizon owners in one of Alaska’s many ports or pristine bays. On his trips south Jack enjoys stopping in Campbell River, Desolation Sound and Victoria en route to Vancouver, British Columbia, Kinship’s homeport. He often drives to Seattle to visit his friends at Emerald Pacific Yachts. Winters are spent in California and Mexico: Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Bara Navidad and La Paz are a sampling of the beautiful ports he has visited on his travels. Being a boater through and through, Jack uses his Horizon year round. He enjoys running the boat himself on short or weeklong cruises with a few pals, but will frequently hire a captain for longer trips or when there are more guests aboard. Since taking delivery of Kinship in May 2004, this busy owner has traveled 18,700 nautical miles and put 2,000 hours on his Horizon’s engines. On average, he cruises at 10.5 knots on long runs. At this speed Kinship has a range of over 1,000 nautical miles and her passengers can enjoy their surroundings at a more relaxed pace.

HORIZON FOCUS:

By Roger Sowerbutts

of Horizon America

Horizon Yachts works from a construction concept referred to as “safety by design.”

10

www.horizonyacht.com

Yacht owners and crew share an overriding passion for yachting. Sometimes this passion overshadows certain criteria when searching for a new boat. I find it surprising, for example, that rarely when a customer comes to look at a boat does he ask, “What is its safety rating,” or, “What has been done in building and equipping this boat to assure my family's safety?” You would probably never buy a car without asking these questions. Considering the sometimes severe marine conditions, you would think a safety rating would be an even more compelling issue when selecting a boat. It's a funny thing about passion; when you fall in love with the way a boat looks, you may forget about details like safety. You might, but we don't. Horizon Yachts works from a construction concept referred to as “safety by design.” Not only do the boats look stylish, but the redundant systems and safety features we insist on far exceed industry standard. All Horizon motoryachts are constructed using the most advanced technologies available and Horizon currently holds the record for the largest SCRIMP hull ever made. SCRIMP infusion is a story all its own. However, for the purposes of this article, SCRIMP means stronger, safer and more consistent FRP parts. By ensuring the perfect resin-to-mat ratio, SCRIMP-made FRP parts are the best any molding process can currently achieve.

Not only do the boats look stylish, but the redundant systems and safety features we insist on far exceed industry standard.

Sometimes safety comes down to exterior handrails, not just the size of the rail but the height, finish and functionality. Horizon uses 2inch rails set at approved heights. Our boarding gates use spring-loaded catches and hidden hinges and locks to prevent accidental opening. The elegant staircase on the aft deck is very easy on the eyes with its sweeping flow up to the flybridge. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but also far safer and comfortable at sea than stainless ladders or nearly vertical staircases used by some builders. Twin staircases from the aft deck to the swim platform are also designed with easy access in mind. Molded into the structure and enclosed from the weather side, they offer handrails on the inboard side to access the platform that in turn is surrounded by 2-inch diameter stainless steel removable rails for your protection. On each Horizon’s bow, the hydraulic windlass is located behind protective bulwarks and operates from either a handheld remote or foot switch on the bow. This gives the anchor operator a safe base of oper-

ation and the ability to view the anchor while raising it into the stowed position. A saltwater rinse located in the anchor locker also assures a clean anchor is retrieved onto the roller assembly. While Horizon offers customers the option of a full-beam salon, walkaround decks offer the ultimate in functionality and safety with enclosed bulwarks offering safe passage to the bow even in the most inclement weather, giving peace of mind to parents of small children. Windshield wipers might not be considered safety gear, however, imagine being caught out in a squall or 10-foot seas when inferior wipers fail or flop uselessly against the superstructure. The windshield wipers selected by Horizon were developed for use by high-speed naval craft and European high-speed trains. To reduce the possibility of losing a windshield to impact from flying objects, our windscreens are tempered glass. Frameless window designs mean no leaks, no frame failures and no frame maintenance. Safety comes in many forms. The addition of concealed escape cont’d on next page...

hatches in the master and VIP cabins is seen by many of our customers as a major advantage over the competition. Aft accommodation areas also have two egresses, one into the salon via the internal staircase and one through a weather tight transom door to the swim platform. Smoke and CO2 sensors in each area of the yacht register an audible alarm if they detect abnormal readings. Any fire needs three ingredients: Fuel, which is found in abundance in any engine room; ignition sources, which again are abundant, and oxygen. Eliminate any one of the three ingredients and you eliminate fire. While fuel sources and ignition are hard to control in an engine room, oxygen can be choked off via hydraulically controlled dampers over the air intakes, which are now standard on all Horizons. The dampers instantly stop the flow of oxygen to the engine room and also concentrate the fire suppressant to quickly minimize the effect of a fire. The Horizon electrical system combines function and safety, the shore-power supply is initially passed through an auto ISO boost transformer. This not only isolates the yacht from any potential shore-side problems but also regulates the voltage entering the yacht by automatically reducing or increasing the voltage to remove the possibility of damage to equipment caused by power spikes. All wiring is color-coded and labeled to simplify trouble-shooting. Magnetic breakers are used exclusively. All installations are done in accordance with safety standards and incorporate the most up-to-date equipment available. Equipment redundancy also plays a large role in safety at sea. An example of Horizon's “safety by redundancy” is its use of double or triple Racor fuel filters, each valved to operate individually or in series. This redundant filtration minimizes the possibility of losing an engine to contaminated fuel. The same philosophy guides the standard dual “live” PTO hydraulic systems for the (optional) stabilizers and bow thruster. This system is driven simultaneously by each engine gearbox. If one engine shuts down, this operating system allows the thruster and stabilizers to remain fully powered without having to turn any valves. Knowing the bow thruster will continue to operate seamlessly is a relief to any helmsman. While some of the above may be considered conveniences rather than safety features, others such as the standard dual fresh water pumps or the dual raw water intake pumps for the air conditioners will allow these systems to keep functioning - and allow you to keep boating - even if one of the pumps fails. These examples of the convenience of built-in redundancy may go unnoticed at boat shows, but they are part of the passion that drives us here at Horizon Yachts.

HorizonCorner SEA TRIAL FOR

HORIZON 128 FOOT MEGAYACHT

Kamaxitha, the biggest yacht Horizon has ever launched.

Driving a luxury yacht is always an enjoyable and relaxing journey, especially when you are in a 128-foot tri-deck megayacht with twin master staterooms, twin salons, a midship dinghy garage, a transom motorbike garage and a bunch of other equipment. But for Horizon's sea trial team, driving Kamaxitha, the biggest yacht Horizon has ever launched, is serious business. On board with owner's representatives and DNV surveyors, the sea trial team tested every piece of equipment to ensure proper functionality and maneuvered the yacht to her limits to prove her performance. The maneuvering trials included a speed test, turning circle, emergency astern, stopping inertia, zig-zagging, zig-zagging with power lost and a full power endurance test. A tri-deck yacht in the 130-foot range may show instability due to the lower beam-height ratio. But after the turning circle and zig-zag test at full speed, Kamaxitha showed sufficient righting moment to recover from heeling situations, which gives the helmsman much confidence. Anchoring is a crucial test since it can be a matter of life-and-death. Two hydraulic windlasses must be able to drop and lift 250kg anchors and 165 meters of anchor chain within a specified time. The fire-fighting system was also tested. Besides ordinary fire hydrants providing pressurized sea water, this yacht is fitted with a water-mist (also called high fog) fire fighting system in accommodation areas. Similar to a sprinkler system which is engaged by a fire alarm, this system uses a very fine mist under high pressure instead of water spray and will not cause damage to the interior. Testing the midship dinghy garage may be the most exciting activity. The fullbeam garage in front of the engine room has space for one dinghy and two PWCs. A hydraulic water-tight garage door at hull side allows the crew to launch the dinghy by a crane fitted on the garage overhead. The owner can get on board of the dinghy from the main deck by a side ladder, which retracts and stores in the engine room. All systems were tested and monitored during the sea trial. Not only the functionality but the endurance at sea is ensured. The sea trial ended with successful completion of the emergency shut down test required by the DNV surveyor when the yacht returned to the shelter of Kaohsiung harbor.

Premier Yachts, a member of the Horizon Group, was officially formed in August 2005. In addition to being the manufacturing site for our custom megayachts of 105 feet and larger, this yard will develop a new model series - the aptly titled “Premier Series. Visitors to Premier Yachts cannot help but notice the stunning views of Kaohsiung Harbour and the city skyline. Situated on an island offshoot of Kaohsiung, the yard's geography offers a tremendous advantage and distinguishes Premier's shipyard from all others in the Port of Kaohsiung. Premier's facility occupies 24,000 square meters (nearly six acres), and with 200m (656 feet) of water frontage, this special location gives Premier logistical advantages for sea trials and loading completed yachts aboard ships for delivery to owners abroad. As many as six megayachts can be built here simultaneously, which is a good thing because there are now confirmed orders for four Premier 130s! James Fwu, a licensed marine architect who earned his Master's Degree in Naval Architecture & Engineering from National Taiwan University, is in charge of management and construction operations at Premier Yachts.

Established in 2000, Vision Yachts, a subsidiary of Horizon, began with a 3,300-square meter (35,520 square feet) shipyard, making it the smallest shipyard in Taiwan. The success of its products led to rapid business growth, which outstripped the capability of the yard sooner than even optimistic planners could have foreseen. By the end of 2005, the new Vision Yachts facility, three and one-half times bigger than the original, was under construction. The bright, new, spacious and efficient purpose-built facility pictured here was completed in Nov 2006. Vision Yachts is dedicated to building Horizon yachts of less than 73 feet in length. In addition, Vision is developing a brand new model line - the aptly named Vision Series. As construction went on around her, the first new Vision 68 was completed and launched in Kaohsiung on December 1, 2006. She will be shipped to her new owner in Seattle, Washington, during January 2007. With the first launching of the Vision 68, the exciting new Vision Series is opening yet another new marketplace for Horizon Yachts. Vision Yachts is led by designer and craftsman Austin Lin. His talent in interior design helps naval architects, customers and his team create and build unique, quality vessels that express each customer's personal vision.
