Anjel Totty: Dyslexia Screening and Remediation Services Most parents and educators know that learning to read is a process, one that involves a variety of specific skills. When these skills are effectively learned and systematically combined, a child should then be able to read with increasing success. Children with dyslexia have extraordinary talents, but everyone has a unique potential that is being daily whittled away by this lack of understanding.

If your child is struggling with reading help and spelling you are the key to your child’s success and I can show you how. Your child can feel confident at school and even learn to enjoy reading. Conventional methods often fail struggling readers because they fail to harness each child’s unique strengths. There is often a lot of emphasis on getting classroom accommodations put into place for our children. We understand the importance of accommodations in the classroom in order to help our children learn and prove their knowledge while they work to bring their skills up to grade level.

For children with additional needs, parents and educators may also know that a different approach might be needed. When the approach includes a little fun and enjoyment when learning these needed literacy skills, the result can often be much more successful. Worn out by endless homework wars, discouraged because you feel like you’ve tried everything with no results, desperate to end the roller coaster of emotions you experience watching your child struggle to keep up with schoolwork. You can help by reading the information to your child, asking the child to repeat back for understanding, and bringing it to his or her attention when there is a two part question.

What I find is often overlooked is the need for accommodations at home. Bridging the gap between home, tutoring and school is critical in maintaining your child’s motivation and cooperation. Reading directions to your child is very helpful. This helps ensure your child completes the homework assignment correctly. If you help your child underline keywords, you will also be enforcing study strategies. As you have probably experienced, your child tends to struggle completing assignments correctly.

If so, I’d like to share a simple trick that I learned several years ago. Simply ask your child’s teacher to accept math work on graph paper. The lines on the paper will act as “guides” and make it easier for your child to properly line up longer math equations. If your child finds that the squares on the graph paper are too small, simply turn a piece of lined binder paper on it’s side so that the lines are vertical. This will help keep the problems lined up neatly and offers more room for writing. This trick is also helpful for multiplication problems and long division problems! Your child’s teacher may like the idea so much that he or she decides to ask all students to complete their math work this way! Do you have a simple, effective tip that you would like to share?
