Temporary Hotel
[undergraduate thesis project. penn state // astana, kazakhstan // 2016]
Can a hotel be something different than a traditional building? Can it be a network in the city rather than one single construction? Or can it be reduced to a smaller space, like a single room, a pavilion, or ‌ ... can it be something like this?
Thesis Statement Nomadism is increasingly relevant as practical solution to urgent building needs in the era of globalization and high mobility. Temporary architecture based on nomadic culture is well placed not only to save a wide range of architectural problems, but to do it better than more conventional responses.

Many different aspects of nomadic lifestyle inspired this design exploration for an alternative to traditional hotels. The main set of guides was set primarily by the yurt – nomadic dwelling that was refined through centuries; and the meaning of the yurt for the nomadic community.
Nomad 1 [Foldable Hotel]
Nomad 2 [Lightweight]
Portability of the yurt. A hotel that could be Yurts were lightweight flatpacked and shipped to any destination and could be transand effortlessly folded back up. ported by a single camel. Paper tubes are the main structural element that will reduce the weight and provide easily accessible and recyclable material.
Nomad 3 [Walking City]
Mobility of the nomads. Nomadic communities were a much more convincing example of walking city than the one proposed by the popular group Archigram.

Nomad 4 [Emerging City]
Nomads chose specific sites for their camps, which they almost never changed. Every year around the same time a “city” will emerge on that site. The proposal is to build permanent campgrounds with infrastructural cores that will emerge from the ground whenever they are needed. Then, temporary structures will be built around these cores.

NomadicCity [Hotel as a temporary network]
Nomadic camps can be seen as “temporary cities” with the entire network created to allow the community to function. The entire city traveled from place to place, but the network always functioned.

Sai Ying Pun Wet Market [academic project // hong kong // 2015]
Traditional wet markets have existed in China and Honk Kong long before refrigerator was invented. Wet markets have a reputation for selling the freshest produce, fish, meat, and other food products, because a majority of the goods sold are locally grown in the region. However, wet markets are slowly being replaced by supermarkets due to its poor hygiene and food safety standards. Today wet markets are most frequented by older people, those with lower incomes, and domestic helpers. The new Wet Market improves the sanitary conditions and attracts more people. You can buy the freshest fish at the fish market (2m deep fish tank floor) and vegetables at the floor above. On the next floor you may take cooking classes or make a family barbecue. The roof houses a bar, small garden and an observation deck with a spectacular view of the bay.

Sphere
[materials study // group project // 2013]
The task was to design a sphere made out of single pieces no longer than 22 cm. The material is wood. The object is supposed to be lightweight, but be able to hold a weight of 10 kg. Additionally, every team was to design a facade with lighting features. We used glulam plywood, which we made ourselves. To bend the plywood we put it into a framework right after applying glue for couple days. The insides of the faรงade panels are painted with reflective paint to enhance the lighting effect.

Display Wall
[design build. group project // state college, pennsylvania // 2012] [client: “learning factory metal shop. penn state]
The shop supervisor asked us to design something where they could display the sponsors and achievements of the Learning Factory. He set up a budget and 3-months timeframe. In collaboration with the shop employees our team developed a design for the display wall. We also manufactured all the parts (CNC) and build the wall on site. My responsibilities included: quality check and construction of the structure; purchasing materials; installing the metal facing and facade panels; developing a solution for the construction of the circular edge.
