Split House Adaptation is a recurring theme in everyday life: plants adapt to the nature in terms of temperature and humidity; humans adapt to their indeginous culture by inheriting traditional behavior; architecture also needs to adapt to its surrounding environment.

Photographer's Villa Design, Guangzhou, China

Romantic Verticality Infrastructure Revolution Architectural Design, Beijing, China

Kahn has said: " It is the role of design to adjust to the circumstantial." In its physical presence, architectural adaptation is the connection between the built-environment and the natural landscape – it interrelates different groups of specific users, regardless of the users being plants, animals or exhibits. Conceptually, architectural adaptation connects time and space – bridging the past and future as well as making the pre-programmed functions permeable. Adaptation creates a visual and perceptual continuity. In this so-called flowing space, function is no longer constrained by traditional boundaries such as walls or floors so that people are able to surpass the limit of boundaries, forgetting that they are standing in a physical concrete box or frame.

Unexpected Contradiction Architecture for Lion and Zebra, Beijing, China

Folding Stage Fashion Design College Complex Architectural Design, Manhattan, New York

Nomadic Community Design Resilient for Vulnerable Community, Valenzuela, Philippines

Adaptive architecture should be sensitive to all habitants of our planet, both the nature and the urban environment. With the impact of rapid urbanization, it becomes an emergency to create environmentally sensitive designs that respond to the natural surroundings and the Culture of Congestion in metropolis.

Complementary Works Architectural Designs, Fine Art, Fashion Design, Photography

SPLIT HOUSE PHOTOGRAPHER'S VILLA DESIGN

2013 November - 2014 January Site: Guangzhou, China Tutor: Ping Su Solo work The 3rd Award of Peng Jiwen Scholarship

Functionalism has split the space completely for various use to make sure the schism will not interfere with the other activities that take place in the same house. Lead by a main Grid system, the project was injected an oblique line to activate the regular space. Split by the art gallary in the oblique line system, the house has two separated parts - living and working space. Both parts are connected by another corridor with balconies in the straight-line system, while each half has its own stairs. The overlapping part of the two system weakens the sense of spatial depth; nevertheless, it is also a reminder – the space is now switching to another function.

äş [ CHINESE PAVILION ]

ROMANTIC VERTICALITY

Site: Houhai, West City District, Beijing, China 2014 Autumn September - October Solo Work

In comparisons with the phenomenological arguments on space and place by Husserl and Heidegger, the construction of thinking on garden architecture with Chinese philosophy is further clarified. The pavilion intends to provide a place of viewing the world, instead of that of being viewed. It gathers people and space around, as well as retains the time of life as a stop. The meanings of emptiness derived from Zhuangzi philosophy is projected into the narrative of pavilion, which caused its transformation from a "ready-to-hand" to superfluous thing. The statement results its being an independent thing along with the "useless" person herein. A world established by the vacant pavilion comes into presence along with its subjectivity- people inside, who inhabits here as a permanent guest. The design shows cultural sensitivity and expression of a historic site in Beijing. The narrative space in Chinese is characterized by its serene peacefulness among urban chaos. By re-purposing a public restroom into a pavilion, the design provides a place of viewing the cultural heritage of Beijing. It changes the city's skyline quietly but chronically, proving its value and existence in a modest way. The structure continues to grow with an increasing number of bricks made by polluted dusts from Beijing's air pollution.

Phasing - Unfinished Work as Art Performance Itself Adding floors upon the public lavatory is a revolution for existing infrastructure; accumulating bricks that are made of toxic fumes is a performance art which aims to raise people's awareness to protect our environment. Using these bricks as walls and handrails, we never know when the construction work will finish but we hope it will maintain unfinished because the more bricks we make, the more devastated environment we have.

Hey, it's quite interesting to see people through the table!

You can go to Hutongs. There are some bontiques and many traditional foods are also available.

These gadgets are so lovely! Where can I buy them?

Zebra Park Sou Fujimoto said, “Nature is the nearest space of no intention. Its uncertainty has provided multi-functional space for people. They are the ones who actually define the space. The design explores an architecture for animals rather than for people by investigating the variation of scales, forms, materials, structures and environments. The process of design not only considers different sizes of space visually, but also attempts to simulate a comprehensive experience involving different senses of hearing, smelling, temperature and humidity, etc. In order to find a more appropriate relationship among the users, their shelters, and nature, my design captures the animals' physical demand for water by featuring a structure that flows along a meandering river for two opposing species, lion and zebra. While this seemingly creates an uneasy atmosphere between the two, the design aims to facilitate cohabitation and sharing of natural resources. Animal aggression reflected on the three-dimensional apertures protrudes though the walls. The design also allows peoples to observe both animals' behaviors and emotions. The wall, constructed with different materials and density, are to some extent transparent, leading to a closer relationship between animals and humans, architecture and nature.

Open & Close the Walls When humans are involed in the scenario, they give the architecture a subjective definition of their feelings, which are showed by two different kinds of materials of the "wall". The cold wall between human and lion is made of reinforce concrete so that people can hide behind it to peep at lion. The relationship between human and zebra, on the contrary, is more mitigatory. Therefore the other wall is decomposed. People can still feel a wall when walking but it is no longer a wall when they stop as they can always observe the life of zebra.

Rhythm of the Wall As animals or humans walking along the wall, they can enjoy an ever-changing transparency of the view from indoor or outdoor space. Only a specific scenario can be seen from one spot.

FOLDING STAGE VERTICAL SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN

2015 Autumn September - December Site: Soho, New York Tutor: Gang Song Solo work

It seems like a paradoxical intention to solve congestion, but as Rem Koolhaas put it: “by creating more congestion comes to an adaptive strategy Urban congestion has forced architecture to grow in vertical direction. Soho is also undergoing a significant land shortage currently. As most new buildings in this area cater to more profitable high-end markets, the complex functions of the school are adapted to the site. With a mixture of art, commence and residence, the new school becomes a epitome of Soho. The process of art design is open to the street, so as fashion shows. Art vision prompts people's consuming desires, whereas market incents students' creativities. The linear stage for fashion show or display is folded and changed into a spiral rising circulation to adapt to the congested block. The long stage is disassembled into floors in different level where an infinite number of simultaneous performances can be given in either the same time or the separated time. The structure is maximized for urban uses, with a mixture of commerce, education, entertainment and residence.

The structure is maximized for urban uses, with a mixture of commerce, education, entertainment and residence.

SoHo, New York Influenced by the Skyscraper History of Manhattan and the mixed culture of SoHo, the new design school should show both characteristics of congestion culture and the combinition of art and commerce.

Developmental Logic There is a paradoxical intention to solve congestion by creating more congestion. Manhattan's blocks are so tiny; human's culture is amplified to the collosus in this highly dense space. It is the maximun unit of urbanistic. The typology explores the possibilities of massing and floors that can fit accrordingly with the congested block in SoHo area.

Planar Logic - Growing Stages The stages grow from the bottom, starting from a single fashion show; in order to prolong the show time in a congested site, the stages overlap in the vertical direction. On one hand, the life inside the building is correspondingly fractured; incidents on te floors are so brutally disjointed that they cannot conceivably be part of a single scenario. On the other hand, the stages inside the building is interrelated; contingency can be deliberately arranged to make it a continuous stage, decorated by the same group of people with different shows.

Folded Floors Stepped floors can be used for design studio, exhibition or resting place. Different floors overlapping and interspersed with each other, making the three functions interrelating through the sight of users in each floor.

Functional Mixture - Shop and School In spite of see-through space, the shop is separated with the school by an openrable partition. Students' fashion designs are showed in the shop; consumers also have the opportunities to see the manuscripts and design process; these two groups of people are mixed when the partition opened.

Functional Uncertainty - Fashion Show or Exhibition Architecture is not only a generator of cultural mixture, but also an incubator of future uncertainty. The continuous ramp is split by a openable wall. Separated from the school, the shop display its commodities independently; connected with the hall, the shop display fashion shows. The ramp can grow up gradually, incubating the possibility of a long long show.

Fashion Show as Street Art The fashion show is no longer a private and luxurious activity that only belongs to distinguished personages; it becomes a street art that are open to the public.

NOMADIC COMMUNITY INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION " DESIGN RESILIENCE IN ASIA"

2016 Spring March - June Site: Valenzuela, Philippines Tutor: Yiqiang Xiao, Haohao Xu Team work Team member: Shiqi Chen, Jieqiang Chen Role in Team: Team Leader, Concept Development, Site Research & Analysis Architecture Design What is "Nostalgia" ? "Nostalgia' is an unknown. It can develop a feeling of dating back to the past." —— Fujimori Teunobu The competition aims to design preventive and adaptive architecture that allows communities to become more resilient in floods in the low-lying rural site. A central idea was extracted from an indigenous word "Barangay", which demonstrates Filipinos' willingness to help each other to move their entire house to avoid floods. This social behavior is regarded as a consistent strategy that integrates the community's cultural identity. Social and cultural values can be optimized by bringing a greater level of flexibility into this living pattern. Our team focused on the underprivileged families living in vulnerable huts that are most susceptible to floods by accounting for factors such as local construction techniques and construction feasibility based on a limited budget. The proposal is a group of houses that can be aggregated into a community and separated as individual dwellings. The simple design scheme would allow the residents to have the flexibility to decide when or how to aggregate their houses depending on their functional needs.

Floor Plan Traditional Way to Avoid Floods In today's Philippines, " moving house" still happens in rural area. However, citizens can only hold competitions of this activity to commemorate their tradition. The idea of combining two architectures together is a reproduction of human activity.

Photography My fascination with traveling and photography drives me to embark on my journey continously. I have been to over half of the provinces in China, as well as oversea countries such as Japan, Switzerland, Netherland, Italy, Singapore, Vietnam. The uncertainty and unpredictability of adventures in nature have injected novelty into my urban life of being surrounded by manmade structures with pre-programmed functions.
