Innovative backyard wind turbine, based on Savonius turbines, consisting of two vertical blades in a form similar to the shape of a half cylinder surface, capable of generating electricity up to 1 kW.

Wind turbine with vertical rotation axis and variable blade geometry |  ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES (WIND)  | |  ELECTRICITY PURCHASE COST REDUCTION  | |  POWERING ELECTRIC DEVICES IN AREAS WITH LIMITED ACCESS TO EXISTING ENERGY NETWORKS  |

This solution allows the curvature of the blades to be changed, making it possible to increase the power factor by up to 100% when compared with the standard Savonius turbine design. As a result of the shape change of the turbine blades the effective surface area of the striking blade is increased while the returning blade is rolled up. This produces a marked increase in efficiency. This technology will be of interest to industries dealing with the use of renewable energy sources (especially in the prosumer area) and to wind turbine producers.

The technology will allow surgeons to implant a hip replacement more accurately. Until now, there was no quick and reliable method of intraoperative leg length measurement. NaviFAST 6D measures the change in length and displacement of the femur relative to the hip during the hip replacement surgery. The technology is at the stage of international patenting (USA, Europe, Japan). The technology is intended for the orthopaedic surgery industry.

In view of the need to reduce environmental contamination, the implementation and use of biodegradable materials is now a common trend in material technologies.

Biodegradable material for wound dressing and hygienic purposes At the Institute of Material Science of Textiles and Polymer Composites, a new formation technique has been designed and developed to produce card, needled and spunbond non-woven fabrics, as well as foams and foils. Spunbond non-woven fabrics are modified to obtain strong hydrophobic features using a low-temperature plasma technique, making a skin contact layer for hygienic products.

Moreover, the non-woven materials are coated with alginate acid which provides the materials with alleviating properties and optimal pH for the human skin. Spunbond non-woven fabrics also provide an anti-bacterial finish for hospital products – hospital linen and sheets. The needled non-woven fabrics are given a hydrophile finish to obtain absorbent layers and with an anti-bacterial finish applied on the separating layer in hygienic products. This technology is suitable for applications in the production of wound dressing and hygienic materials.

Research conducted by scientists at the Institute of Architecture of Textiles proved the existence of an analogy between the construction and electroconductive properties of a hybrid bunch thread and an electrical system made of solenoid with a ferromagnetic core connected in series. This made it possible to introduce a system of solenoids into fabric and knitwear as a weft and/ or warp, and to convert field energy into electromotive force induced in the copper thread as well as to alternate magnetization of the steel thread. This technology will be of interest to companies producing textronic systems and dealing with ecological solutions.

Monitoring and reference of velocities/accelerations in an object under dynamic load to standard values. Expert opinions on dynamically loaded building structures. Innovative composite materials for reinforcing existing infrastructure.

|  REAL-TIME MONITORING  |  POSTPROCESSING ANALYSIS  | The dynamic effects of machines can be a source of loads that affect the structure and its neighbouring objects. The long-term nature of these interactions can cause the displacement or velocity values to be exceeded and, as a consequence, can lead to a construction disaster. Measuring the vibration frequency of engineering objects, the excitation of vibrations of a desired frequency, dynamic analysis of building structures

The goal of the measurement is to monitor these quantities. The service prepared by the Department of Structural Mechanics is addressed to real estate developers and users of buildings subjected to dynamic activities.

Assays of heavy metal contents in liquid samples using the ASA method

Assaying of trace substance concentrations, including, among others, heavy metals, requires the application of highly sensitive methods.

The Institute of Environmental Engineering and Building Installations offers laboratory services associated with assaying heavy metal contents. Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (ASA or AAS) is an analytical technique which allows for assaying elements (primarily metals) in liquid, solid and gaseous samples. The measurement principle is based on the absorption of specific wavelength radiation by free metal atoms. This service will be of interest to businesses involved in industrial processing, waste and sewage management and reclamation related activities.

Reinforcing existing structures using stressed FRP polymer composites pasted into a concrete cover (Near Surface Mounted – NSM method)

|  QUICK WAY TO SET UP REINFORCEMENTS  | |  NO ANCHORING  |  AESTHETIC VALUES  | |  HIGH TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE  | Research carried out by the Concrete Construction Department proved that the effectiveness of the NSM system is over 100% higher than that of common commercial prestressing systems for EBR reinforcements. It can be used when increasing the load-bearing capacity of building structures intended for changed functions and when working on historic buildings, where the presence of reinforcements cannot be visible. Composite materials are resistant to the external environment. They do not corrode. This service will be of interest to construction companies as well as to public and private investors.
