About the Exhibition:
From the Juror:
The Sevier County Biennial Juried Exhibition is a juried multiple media presentation of artworks created by residents of Sevier County, Tennessee. This countywide exhibition is hosted in alternating years by Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts with dedicated support from many local and regional sponsors. The purpose of this exhibition is to recognize the skill, talent, and creativity of the artists living in Sevier County.
Serving as the juror for the 14th Sevier County Biennial Juried Exhibition was an honor, a pleasure, and a daunting challenge. I was very impressed by the record number of entries and overall quality of work. As a long time resident of East Tennessee, I have often visited Gatlinburg on trips to the Great Smoky Mountains. In a city driven by the economic forces of tourism and littered with kitsch and trite consumer novelties, the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts stands apart as an important cultural landmark that celebrates, inspires, advocates, and educates the area’s vibrant arts and crafts community. It was refreshing to witness the outpouring of support for the nationally renowned contemporary arts and crafts school over the past year. I think that all one needs to do is look at the impressive body of work at the Biennial to realize Arrowmont’s importance to the community.
Artists in this county 18 years of age and older are invited to submit up to four artworks for juror consideration. All artworks must be original in design and be created by the artist. The juror, Clark Gillespie, was chosen from visual artists and art professionals from the Southeast. For this 14th edition of the Biennial, 96 artists submitted 267 works for juror consideration, and 178 works created by 89 artists were selected for exhibition. The exhibition represents the best of the works submitted and are recognized for their quality. The artworks receiving awards represent the highest standard of achievement from the juror’s perspective. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is honored to exhibit the fine visual art and craft from the artists residing in Sevier County. We congratulate those artists whose works were chosen for exhibition and appreciate efforts of all those who participated. It takes a combination of many components to create an object with purpose and vision. I think the same can be said for the evolution of this exhibition.
My goals in selecting artworks for the exhibition were to choose works that would reflect the diverse artistic approaches within the community, to select works that exemplified both traditional arts and contemporary ideas, and to award works that displayed a refinement of both craft and concept. This proved to be a difficult task. Every medium had many strong works that highlighted the artist’s vision and skill.
I would like to personally thank my colleagues Jennifer Brown, Development Assistant; Jill Greene, Staff Photographer; Kim Newman, Public Relations Coordinator; and Robyn Rainwater, Graphic Designer for their expertise and dedication in producing this catalog, as well as the Arrowmont staff and volunteers who attend each component in an excellent program. A generous thank you to Exhibitions Preparator, Darren Case, with the capable assistance of Arrowmont residents Magda Gluszek, Damon McIntyre, Susan S. Roberts, and Lindsey Oesterritter along with Christopher Durocher, for their diligent installation of this exhibition. I would like to thank Clark Gillespie, as juror, for his dedication to visual arts and commitment to creating artistic bounds within the community.
There was an impressive array of entries that dealt with a wide variety of subjects. The majority of works were two-dimensional with many in the mediums of painting, drawing, mixed media, and photography. Although the work did not ensnare me the first time I viewed it, Ronald Burke’s photograph Col. Chapman’s Place patiently earned the award of Best in Show. His ephemeral vision of a door jam offered an interesting composition that most photographers might not even notice. The composition quietly invites the viewer to explore the intricacies of the photograph, which highlight the artist’s technical skill. John Fancher’s found object shadow boxes captivated me with their playfulness and flawless execution and garnered an Award of Distinction. Awards of Merit were given to: Marilyn Anderson for her fabric construction, which illustrates the artist’s mature vision and refinement of technique; Stephanie Brichetto’s Somewhere Between Here and There delighted me with a smart feathery cluster of brushstrokes that betrayed the overall subterranean abstraction; and Tony Newman’s P.O. Box Americana #2567 is a witty construction of ingenuity.
The works that are submitted to this juried opportunity continually amaze me. Clearly the visual arts are flourishing within Sevier County. And finally, to all the artists that participated, I thank you. Through your courage in creativity, you enrich and inspire our lives. That is something to very proud of.
The visual arts and crafts community in Sevier County is obviously strong and growing. I sincerely hope and expect that Arrowmont will continue its tradition of serving the arts and the community. Thank you to Arrowmont for the opportunity to participate in this exhibition.

A special thanks from the Executive Director . . .
I am very pleased to acknowledge the generous amount of financial and
in-kind support the exhibition has received from our sponsors again this year. I would like to extend a very special thanks to Sevier County Bank and to its President R.B. Summitt for their premier sponsorship. For the past several years, Sevier County Bank has supported both the Sevier County biennial and Invitational exhibitions. This year’s sponsorship continues their commitment to both Arrowmont and the artists of Sevier County. This support is significant for the artists, as there are many national exhibitions that do not have the amount of awards we are able to present. In addition, a generous grant from the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville provided for the exhibition’s publications. While viewing this exhibition, please join me in celebrating the achievements of our artists residing in Sevier County. This exhibition personifies the vibrant creative community in our midst, and I am delighted Arrowmont can play a key role in featuring it for all to enjoy. David Willard Executive Director
