Precedent Studies Architects: YYA Location: Maldives Project Year: 2015 Finolhu Villas 100% solar powered project. Will accommodate about 100 guests year round. All solar panels are able to be seen by guests and are used as an architectural element. Guest rooms are designed to minimize energy consumption. Operable windows are strategically placed in order to maximize air ventilation. Planes or boats access all of the resorts. Goal was to make the location feel as if it blends into the previous location.

Design Implications - The use of sustainable materials and practices when designing the hotel will be important because Aruba plans to be solely reliative on wind power in the near future. - By using windows and open ventilation between spaces this will promote air ventilation as well as light brought into the interior of the building.

Architects: Elastic Architects Location: Creta, Greece Project Year: 2018 Area: 6700 m2 Mitsis Rinela Beach Resort & Spa The goal of this hotel was to highlight the high aesthetic and hospitality. The simple design is highlighted by greek elements that dictate function of spaces. Light with shadow, natural materials, and unobstructed views were important. Different materials textures create different shadows which create an ever changing environment. A tall entrance, central fountain and open fireplace are the 3 key points within the main building. There is an unobstructed view of the ocean. The mixture of natural materials lets one area flow into the next. Marble used in the pools was also used around the centralized building to promote unification of the spaces.

Design Implications - Using the view to the advantage and getting the most out of it is important when designing the spaces of the hotel. - The use of materials and their natural aspects is important when correlating the concept with the materials. - The mix of a luxury stay with the classic beach elements promotes this sense of relaxation and will be a prominant design aspect.

Architects: Onion Location: Ko Samui, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani, Thailand Project Year: 2018 Area: 10,757 m2 SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort Every room at SALA has a private pool and sea view. There is a 52 room beachfront phase with 3 levels of rooms. On the other side of the road, there is a 85 room roadside phase. There is also 2 presidential villas and 4 pool villas. Everything is designed to enhance the sequence of light, shadow and shade. The design process started by thinking of what guests would like to see and how would they like to live while they were there. The courtyard has no control over circulation and this is to promote guests being able to sit anywhere they would like, as well as the pool being a circle to allow for this as well. The pool lights mimic moon light and have an “onion ring” as the light source. The sea view is never blocked, even in the lobby which gives a sense of luxury. The façade is long and white to mimic the crescent shadows. 7 different curves are used to show the separation of different spaces; moving shadows make each room different. They used local materials and everyday objects but make them appear special.

Design Implications - The use of light and shadow could create more interest in spaces that are more interior such as the spa area, so by incorporting a variety of light and architectural elements this could be acheieved. - The spherical shape of the stair case can relate back to the concept of sea grapes as well as the rounded corners of the furniture peices. This brings the ideas together and creates a more cohesive flow.

Precedent Studies Architects: Conran and Partners Location: Krakow, Poland Project Year: 2018 Area: 12,644 m2 PURO Krakรณw Kazimierz Hotel Fusion of energy, history, authenticity, and culture of location (Bohemian). Created a welcoming feel with indoor/outdoor areas promoting guests to enjoy the hotel and its hospitality. Street frontage bakery that connects inside of the hotel, as well as a restaurant with locally sourced ingredients. Material choices are chosen to represent the industrial areas as well as the new art galleries in the city. Guest rooms have large windows that bring in lots of light. Other features: wellness facility, events and function areas, atrium, local artists were commissioned for the art throughout the hotel

Design Implications - Correlating the location with the design of the space will be important when thinking of Aruba and its climate variables. The climate will tell what materials are best for the space as well as windows and outdoor-indoor spaces. - This being a boutique hotel, making the space unique and a destination spot for those visiting will be important. Creating a special space like a spa into the hotel design will set it apart from other hotels in the area.

Natural Bridges

Aruba, known as "One Happy Island" is a Caribbean island that lies 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The location of the island allows for great weather year round, making this country a very popular vacation destination. Aruba is a melting pot of over 90 different nationalities which is something that the Aruban's take pride in. The aruban people speak a local language of Papiamento as well as Spanish, English, and Dutch. This now resort island was home to Caquetio Indians of the Arawak tribe who inspire much of the culture in Aruba today. Every Tuesday the locals hold a Welcome Festival known as the "Bonbini Festival" to show visitors what Aruba is all about. Aruba also consists of many popular landmarks such as the Natural Bridges, Fontein Caves, and their white sandy beaches.

Baby Beach, Aruba

Baby Beach Site Implications - The location of the hotel will provide a slight breeze which is important in the design of the hotel by making outdoor spaces more prominant. - The more secluded beach will allow for visitors of the hotel to relax in the indoor/outdoor spaces with views of the beach. - The coastal views provide lower levels of stress as studies show which influences the positioning of windows and rooms. - Close by, are restaurants and

bars that allow visitors to venture outside of the hotel if they choose. -From this location visitors are a short drive away from activities on the island and the positioning provides easy accessibility to roadways.

Concept

Influenced by Aruba's surrounding nature; the local sea grape has influenced the design of the ``KurĂ Hotel & Wellness''. Its health advantages, color, and resiliency have helped define the spaces of the hotel. The ``grape of the shore'' has an abundance of benefits and applications. These aspects inspired the inclusion of the wellness spa and the personal care visitors wish to invoke when taking a vacation. Natural materials used throughout the hotel reflect the environment and provide a calming feel for visitors to enjoy. Gradual changing colors of the sea grape and the environment it has grown in, provides notion to the color palette used throughout the space. The indoor-outdoor design of the hotel lets visitors interact with their surroundings. This allows them to connect with nature, alleviating stressors within the mind. The overall design of the hotel hopes to provide both mental and physical wellness to visitors while still enjoying luxurious hotel accommodations.

Goals - For visitors to feel relaxed and take in the beauty of Aruba. - For visitors to be able connect with themselves through the use of hotel amenities. - Create a space that allows for movement and social relationships. - Use indoor/outdoor spaces to create a connection with the landscape. - Use materials that will provide a cool space in the Aruban climate.
