ITCHEN BATH DESIGN
This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on these applications within residential kitchens and baths. Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions.
RESIDENTIA ENIRONMENTS
This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gathering, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and suitability.
HISTOR OF DESIGN III
This studio presents an in-depth study of the architecture and furniture developments of several major non-western cultures. Religious, philosophical, and social beliefs and customs are emphasized while construction methods, building materials, motifs, fabrics, and decorative arts are explored. Students work within teams to present their research on Middle Eastern, Asian, African, Mesoamerican, and North American cultures. Projects include the development of furniture and accessory designs created through the fusion of world styles.
Miller Residence ď ‹itchen Design CLIENTS NEEDS The homeowners of this townhouse in the suburbs of Illinois have made it clear that they were ready for a change. Further discussing their requests, Mr. and Mrs. Miller mainly wanted more cabinet and countertop space, a movable island, light flooring, easier path of travel and stylish lighting fixture. Together, we talked about all of those wants and came to an agreement with a U-shaped kitchen. That would automatically provide more cabinet and countertop space. With that kept in mind, it was only fair to bring in a movable island in the middle to create more interest. In the original floor plan of the kitchen, the refrigerator was right next to the door opening blocking the pathway to the living room/dining area making it awkward to pass from one room to the next. To fix that issue, the door opening became a wall where the refrigerator could sit up against and the door opening moved all the way down allowing for clear easier path of travel. The cabinetry was clean and simple with stainless steel hardware giving the space a contemporary feel. To achieve the light flooring that the clients requested was an easy fix. By providing them with white porcelain floor planks throughout the whole kitchen, the space automatically appeared bigger and brighter than it really was. Last but not least on their list was the stylish lighting fixture. The homeowners had a lot of character and upbeat personality, so bringing in a bold pendant light was not a problem. The Discoco fixture comes in different colors as well as an artistic flare. The couple loved their new configuration, space, and bold accents. It fit their style right away.

The Miller Residence was a complete kitchen remodel. It not only required a client meeting, but also a field measure, and proper documentation of the current electrical wiring and plumbing. This project allowed for real client based design requirements and a good understanding of the National Kitchen and Bath Association guidelines. To make sure that those guidelines were achieved, a functional work triangle was provided through the use of proper space and functionality improving the aesthetic appeal. By adding the island, the kitchen triangle is improved helping separate food preparation and allows for more countertop space. Learning and applying nomenclature techniques are provided on the construction documentation of the floor plan.

Carlson Miller Residence Residence Bathroom Design This bathroom is inspired by the Asian culture and the idea of relaxation. His and hers vanity resembles a furniture piece allowing it to be the centerpiece as well as adding interest and simplicity to the room. It being on an entire wall of stunning mix of blue 1”x1” mosaic tile not only emphasizes the vanity but brings in the grand appearance of the space right as you walk in. A variety of heights are seen within each different area in the bathroom creating a comfortable feel of separation and peace. A wall separating the water closet from the rest of the interior allows enough privacy but does not feel isolated from the rest of the space. Kohler’s porcelain sink bowls and wall-mounted faucets bring in the contemporary look and feel. Deep rich greens, browns, and blues are chosen to keep the room unified throughout. A beautiful chandelier is placed right above the integrated square tub allowing the eye to wonder around but feel relaxed at all times. The incorporation of a wooden screen separating the shower from the tub area brings in the idea of the “shoji screen”, a Japanesestyle room partition usually made of translucent rice paper framed in black lacquered wood. This wooden screen replaces the rice paper panel or frame, with the contemporary idea of the 3Form panel. It’s a recycled resin panel with stick inlays for a more natural design. Completed with team member, Alyssa Bulfer.

Miller Residence Residence Residential Design Hunter This contemporary living space gives off a sense of peace and a feeling of warmth and relaxation right as you walk in. Providing a functional space for a multigenerational family it is achieved by incorporating different rooms with different functions such as; formal entertainment, cooking, studying, and most importantly, privacy when needed. The interior is unified through the use of the vintage style mixed in with the bohemian color palette bringing in the neutral tones, clean-lined furniture, and the open floor plan creating a romantic vibe. Wheel chair accessibility is important to the space.
It’s brought into consideration with a machine operated stair railing that moves up and down providing easy access from the lower level to the upper level and vice versa. Variety is achieved through the use of unique collections of art and media, organic textures, and spontaneous patterns. The overall design displays the perfect amount of storage for multi uses creating flexibility, easy maintenance, and effective use of space.

THE “GRAND” TABLE The Grand Palace is located in Bangkok, Thailand. The interesting cone-like shape and the idea of it being fully gilded, inspired me tremendously. My idea was to create a table with the same stupa shape but turned upside down resembling the legs. Gilding would be incorporated on the legs and trim of the table just enough to be noticed and appreciated as a piece of craftsmanship and detail.
NATURAL COIL LAMP A fusion piece combining of both Malian and Thai cultures is seen in this piece. The hand painted and natural fabrics from the Malian culture are used as the lampshade and Thailand’s women Karen tribe’s brass coils used to stretch their necks as the post wrapping.
DRUM CHAIR Mali, Africa is well known for its brightly colored fabrics and handmade drums. I thought that by combining the two together, it would make one beautiful piece of furniture. The wicker backrest gives it a natural, handmade look. The bottom portion of the piece is covered with vibrant multicolored fabric in a drum-like shape.
EMERALD DRESSER Another fusion piece combining both Malian and Thai cultures was inspired by The Great Mosque of Mopti and The Emerald Buddha. The color and shape was taken from the Mosque of Mopti and the emerald stone was used for the door panels makes this piece one of a kind.

Historical Reference Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia was the inspiration for this interior. The Cathedral was built from 1554 to 1560 and is located over the grave of Saint Basil, a Russian Orthodox saint. Brick was the main material used for its construction along with plaster and bright contrasting colors. The cupola style roofs are all different resembling scales of goldfish, enameled skin of a serpent, the changing hues of a lizard, glossy rose, and azure of a pigeon’s neck. The interior is filled with more than 400 oil paintings. A lot of intricate swirls and bold flowers covered the walls along with simple geometric shapes. Designing an interior space that would resemble Saint Basil’s Cathedral almost seemed appropriate. Bringing in the brick construction and contrasting ceiling colors brightened the space up. To make the interior stand out even more, bold furniture pieces were chosen to compliment the big column-like structure framing the bed. Wall art included swirls and bold flowers similar to the ones in Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

Residence RefleionMiller Fitness Center Thesis III CONCEPT STATEMENT Reflexion Fitness Center’s green appearance gives off a sense of liveliness and a feeling of excitement right as you walk in the door. Providing a space that offers creative as well as pleasing to the eye amenities, attract customers right away. The idea of bringing the outdoors in is one of the most important goals being achieved. The interior is unified through the use of natural tones along with clean cut furniture pieces, accessories, reflective surfaces and natural elements such as; waterfalls and plants. Variety is achieved through the use of organic textures and geometric patterns. The overall design displays the perfect amount of open space for multi-uses creating flexibility and easy maintenance. The interior is filled with natural light shining through the four major domes on each corner of the building as well as the central dome. The low VOC paint and natural flooring materials enhance the beauty of the interior drastically. Fixtures from Kohler supply the space with water and energy efficiency. A well balanced and eco-friendly fitness center is successfully achieved to encourage a healthy and happy lifestyle. Solution Statement 1. Zones are provided through the use of different colors on the walls as well as flooring material change. All exit doors swing out for safety purposes. 2. All corridors are 5’-0” for easy maneuvering and ADA purposes. 3. Low emitting flooring is used. 4. Meeting all of the client’s needs and requirements with a sleek design. 5. The acoustical and sound absorbing panels are applied for a more quiet space that would be easy to work and exercise in.

City Island, Greektown is a place for people to gather together and enjoy delicious food. By creating a comfortable and breathtaking atmosphere, customers will not only enjoy the food but admire the interior as well. Combining the exposed wooden columns with the birch poles create a natural yet sophisticated look appropriate for the urban demographic. Using a midnight blue paint on all of the walls along with a white stone cladding three feet from the floor, automatically unifies the interior in a simple way creating a beautiful contrast. Installing elegant tufted back booths as the centerpiece of the restaurant, furnishes the space with a variety of seating that isn’t overpowering when a customer first walks in. Reusing all of the tables and putting a classy tablecloth over each one, creates an upscale atmosphere that is budget friendly. The back wall of the restaurant is filled with a line of white birch poles giving the illusion of height. In the center of the wall sits a peaceful waterfall capturing the beauty and the movement of the water. Oceanside tile is placed at the top of the back wall to emphasize and frame its grand appearance. All scales represent original scale

Miller Residence Adaptive Reuse Advanced Specialty OLD DOMINICK’S GROCERY STORE The grocery store closed in 2004, and in 2006 a housing development was proposed but never built. Right now, it’s an eyesore waiting to be turned into something amazing that would give to the community. The city of Rolling Meadows is considered to be a TIF district but since the old grocery store is such a big space, it’s hard to find potential buyers. Even for its big size, it has many benefits of its surroundings. Public facilities within walking distance include; Kimball Hill Park, City Hall, Rolling Meadows Library, schools, churches, and the post office. They are important aspects for bringing potential shoppers and apartment/home buyers to the area. Due to the big percentage of high school students and recently married couples, it created the perfect opportunity to allow for a luxury hotel incorporating a banquet and restaurant for weddings, high school graduations, reunions, etc. The facility allows for plenty of room because of its great amount of square footage and comfortable parking space. EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS Keeping the building “as is” and adding to the outside structure is what the main focus would be. By doing so, it not only saves the building’s character, but displays new development ideas and possible trends for the future. The original entrance of the grocery store will be treated as the secondary entrance as well as a direct entrance to the banquet room. The main entrance will be located on the right side of the building where the ceiling will be raised about twice the size of its original size. It emphasizes the beauty of the exterior and shows different levels that will interest the eye immediately when passing by. The cylindrical columns that were originally exposed would be covered up, but not demolished, with a simple curtain wall elongating the building.

ROLLING MEADOWS HISTORY Rolling Meadows was incorporated in 1955 as a city named for its gently rolling terrain. It bloomed during the 1950’s and 1960’s as business moved into the area. Developers inundated the area with apartment buildings and by 1970, multifamily dwellings made up 35 percent of the total structures in Rolling Meadows. The complexes however, suffered a series of fires in the decade prompting the city to become more stringent in their building codes as well as allowing new and improved development to take place. By 2000, the population was 24, 609 with 19 percent at Hispanic origin, 7 percent Asian, and 3 percent African American. The city began revamping commercial areas along Kirchoff Road which is where old Dominick’s used to be located. It was built in 1986 on 2855 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows IL. That was the perfect location to incorporate a fresh and new structure bringing in more people to the community. For population 25 years and over in Rolling Meadows: - High school or higher: 83.7% - Bachelor’s degree or higher: 31.0% - Graduate or professional degree: 9.5% - Unemployed: 2.6% - Mean travel time to work (commute): 24.7 minutes

MillerNight Residence AvantGarde Club CAD III Inspired by Jackson Pollock, the design for Avant-Garde Night Club in unique. Located in Chicago, it’s bold interior brings in customers right in. The theme incorporated in the space applies the directionless lines within the fabrics of the seating. This space will include a bar on the first floor as well as the second, a dance floor, and a stage for the customers to enjoy. VIP area is also incorporated on both of the floors. The variety of seating also influenced by Jackson Pollock’s abstract paintings. At first glance, the paintings look confusing and unorganized but looking at them on a deeper level, they are very organized and mathematically thought out. The general color theme is brought in from one of his famous works called “Number 8” with colors such as yellow, green, orange, white, and gray.

Accents would be displayed by reflective and metal surfaces throughout the night club. Its eco-friendly artichoke lighting not only is energy efficient but also saves money. Kohler bathroom features are also included. Overall, this design is trendy, bright, and brings in Jackson Pollock’s phenomenal paintings to life in a modern atmosphere with an artistic twist.
EXISTING BUILDING CONSIDERATIONS The intervention in the building is limited to the interior of the building, the exterior walls and structure must be kept untouched. Spaces that needed to be incorporated into the space include the following: FRONT OF HOUSE - Entrance with a vestibule to serve as an air lock (intermediate area between exterior and interior with double set of doors to avoid unwanted heat interchange) - Reception lobby with waiting area and reception stand - Coat room - Seating area with tables, booths, benches and bar seating for 120 to 150 people - Two bars - Stage for live performances with back stage, storage and washroom. Private and easy access to the backstage from the street for performers and equipment. - VIP area with comfortable seating, privacy and possibility of isolation for private parties. - Public restrooms for male and female. BACK OF HOUSE - Kitchen and storage with direct access to street - Administrative office - Employees break room - Employees restroom - Janitor’s closet - Maintenance and storage area AVANT-GARDE Abstract expressionism was the first great American avant-garde art movement that took place shortly after World War II.

INTERNSHIP
Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor.
Miller Residence Residence Bathroom Bailey Interning at Insignia Kitchen and Bath provided me with a lot of valuable information and experience that will be applied in the near future. It showed me not only the design aspect of the Kitchen and Bath industry, but also a little bit of the business side. My job there varied from drafting floor plans on AutoCAD and organizing vendor binders to going on field measures with the designers and sitting in on client meetings. I got the wonderful opportunity to be a part of and attend local events as well as the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS). There, I was able to learn more about the products that are out there and talk to people from different states. DISPLAYED ON THESE PAGES A valuable piece of information that I got to work on was Selection Quote Sheets, shown on the next page. That is where I filled out and organized in Microsoft Excel a chart of all of the vendors and their product’s description that were used in a specific project, in this case the Bailey’s Residence, and document individual pricing and quantities. That allowed me to learn the product on a deeper level as well as familiarize myself with the individual product’s pricing for future references. Floor plans completed in AutoCAD by Debby Farley.
