All Star Productions are a thriving theatre production company who regularly perform dazzling shows at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Pub on Hoe Street. Their aim is to produce the highest quality professional musical theatre on London’s Fringe. E List chats to Andrew Yon. What’s been the high point for the company so far? The continued praise from audience and critics complimenting the high standard of professional talent and shows that we have produced, resulting in 4 and 5 star reviews, and winning and being nominated for various theatre awards.
Tell us about the Ye Olde Rose and Crown as a theatre venue? Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre is one of the largest pub theatre venues in London with a seating capacity of between 60 – 80 depending on the configuration of set and staging of a production. It also comes with its own theatre bar which recently was awarded the Off West End award for “Best Theatre Bar in East London”
Tell us about the sort of productions you put on there and how you select which shows to do? Our artistic policy is to produce shows which have not been revived professionally in London for a long time or to produce works which have not yet been produced in this country at all. Our recent show “Phantom” was the UK professional premiere with other shows such as “Flora The Red Menace” which was the first London production in 18 years.
How do you assemble a cast and what sort of performers do you feature? We audition professionally trained actors some of which have already had a professional career in the West End. In most cases they are
required to sing, dance and act during the audition process which can include being invited back for recalls etc. before the final decision is made.
You have a show this month. Tell us about it? LITTLE ME: The story of Belle Poitrine’s ascent from the wrong side of the railroad tracks in Venezuela, Illinois to the exquisite luxury of Southampton, Long Island. Belle meets high-born Noble Eggleston. He cannot marry her because she does not have “wealth, culture and social position.” She achieves these goals through her association with seven men, some of whom help her progress by being taken dead at opportune moments. ummer has finally arrived as I write and one
of my friends has reacted to the current heatwave by renaming E17 as Costa del Stow (nice one Richard!). Normally at this time of year many of the town’s numerous creative residents would be stuck indoors working hard to complete their pieces and exhibitions ready for September’s E17 Art Trail. However the Trail is taking a break this summer, ready to return at its new time in May/June next year. In its place and for the whole of August, Walthamstow has its very own Summer exhibition (yes, just like the one at the Royal Academy). The show at Penny Fielding’s on Orford Road features 135 works selected from the best of local talent and promises to be the Walthamstow art event of 2013. I have taken part in previous Trails and with each year I have seen more and more visitors from other parts of London and even beyond. The sheer number of artists and people involved is staggering (I think around 3,500 last year) and the benefit it brings to the area and its businesses can not be underestimated. Obviously as the Trail grows so do the admin costs so not only will the summer show be a brilliant event but it will raise funds to help us build an even better Art Trail next year. The establishment and growth of the E17 Art Trail is one of the major changes I have seen over my 25 years in Walthamstow. I think it is the way that the town is constantly changing and developing that keeps me here. I mentioned ‘potential’ last month and it feels that there are always things just bubbling under ready to explode at any time given the right people and environment. Just such people are Clare and Andrew who I met last week. They have taken over the rear part of the old Litho Printers shop on Orford Road as a base for their fab children’s clothing business, Little Mashers. This leaves the front of the building that faces onto Orford Road, which they are offering as a space for pop ups/workshop/gallery space. Orford Road is already a hotbed of restaurants, pubs and of course the likes of Penny Fielding and Finamore so this is an amazing opportunity for somebody to come up with something new to add to the mix and to take advantage of the street’s growing popularity. So if you think you have an idea for the space please email Clare at info@littlemashers.com Another recent welcome change is the successful revival of several of the area’s pubs after a long period when many had been lost. The latest one to watch out for is the former College Arms on Forest Road, soon to be renamed as The William Morris. New landlord Laurance hopes to have it reopened by the end of the month. Finally I am very pleased to welcome in this issue the Soho Theatre as an advertiser and supporter of the E List. And who says nothing ever happens? Paul Lindt, Editor

Welcome Walthamstow Dad. It has to be asked but are you a native to the town? I’m not from London. I grew up on a farm in rural Leicestershire. I moved to London in ‘96 and lived in Camden, Hoxton and Finsbury Park before moving to Walthamstow. We’ve lived here for 12 years. Assuming you are indeed a Dad, tell us about your kids? We have 2 daughters: Isobel - 6 and Bo - 4. Constant trouble in a really good way. Tell us how you transformed from a normal man to Walthamstow Dad? I invented Walthamstow Dad the night Isobel was born. I’d had way too much gas & air and fashioned a cape out of a hospital bed sheet. I’d made a T-Shirt with DADDY printed on it and the seeds of what is now Walthamstow Dad were sown. I felt so grateful for all the help and kindness we were shown at Whipps Cross, I decided to try and use my design skills to fund raise for the Maternity Department. I found the anonymity of a ‘character’ easier to promote and so separated it from my professional work as a 3D designer but it’s become a significant part of my portfolio. I’m very proud that the community has taken it to heart, they are its success. Apart from your kids what is your greatest achievement to date? I’ve managed to surround myself with a cracking bunch of mates. You use your T-shirt designs as force for good. Tell us about your new designs. I’ve designed two more T-shirts this summer, one for Walthamstow Mums and one for kids. They are raising money for Specialist Children’s Services at Wood Street Health Centre. Have you any other projects on the go? I’ve been commissioned by The House of St Barnabas to design a huge lighting installation for the entrance foyer at their SoHo members club. It’s an inspiring space to work in and a real challenge. Not many dads get to create their own currency. What was the Stowner and how did it come about? The Stowner is alternative Walthamstow money. I created it for the E17 Art Trail last year. It was meant to be a performance piece where I created a bank within my house and robbed the bank whilst visitors came round the show. I got as far as creating the money... Back to the kids, is Walthamstow a town fit for children and if so why? It’s an interesting place for children to grow up. My kids will learn how to rub along with a diverse range of people from all walks living in Walthamstow. They will even meet vegetarians. What’s the worst thing about being a Dad here? The spaces where children play are not good enough. Badly designed too. And the best? Having the marshes and the forest on our doorstep is fantastic. What is Walthamstow’s best kept secret? There’s an infamous dogging road
in Walthamstow. I’m not saying where because that really will affect house prices. Last year you went viral with the brilliant YouTube mash-up, Walthamstow - The Final Days* inspired by a Mumsnet discussion. Why do you think people get so polarised about E17. I don’t think it’s different elsewhere - villages where I grew up always had rivalries. There’s a lot of reverse snobbery around the whole issue. Walthamstow is no better and no worse than anywhere else and that was the message of the film. But it is where our children were born so it’s a very special place to us. On to possibly Walthamstow’s most contentious issue: buggies in pubs. Discuss. Kids should not be in pubs. No one relaxes. That said, the people who raise the most objection about it always strike me as the least tolerant. Don’t get me started on Bugaboos! What are your dreams for Walthamstow in the next few years? I’d like to walk my girls to the local EMD cinema and watch a movie. Thanks Walthamstow Dad, any final message to all those other local dads? You’ll get no parenting wisdom from me!

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 A few days ago I was walking along Markhouse Road heading for the tube when someone stopped me to ask for directions. The young man was trying to find Central Station but was headed in completely the wrong direction. I gave some instructions, provided some cursory pointing to show him the way and then continued on my high speed march up the road. I glanced back as I walked away and the poor chap was stood exactly where I had left him looking a little confused by my directions and less than friendly attitude. Remembering how lost I got the very first time I came to Walthamstow when I was a student, I went back and told him I was going the same way and he was welcome to join to me.

The East London
As we walked along Selborne Road, the young man explained that he lived in Sri Lanka and was in Walthamstow to visit his brother who is studying in London. He had arrived at Heathrow that morning and had managed to negotiate his way to E17 by bus, a pretty impressive feat for someone that has never been to London. I asked him what he intended to do during his visit, I expected him to list the usual tourist attractions like Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London, but instead he grinned at me and said “William Morris Gallery” He went on to tell me that he is studying the Arts & Crafts movement on a design course back at home and had saved for two years to come over and visit. Seeing his enthusiasm for the gallery reminded me what a brilliant local resource it is and how lucky we are to have it on our doorstep. It’s easy to take local attractions like the William Morris Gallery for granted and it was nice to see someone from a different country so excited about visiting it. As for the visitor, I dropped him off outside the station to meet his brother and I hope he enjoys his visit to Walthamstow.
