W

HAT a year it’s been for Walthamstow. I have lived

in the area for 25 years and part of the reason I’m still here is it’s always changing and I’m scared I might miss something if I left. Like other areas of outer London the last year has heard voices raised re that dreaded term gentrification. Whatever the pros and cons, Walthamstow has ended the year definitely on the map as far as the rest of London is concerned. Nowhere is this more evident than in the pubs, with many of them seeing out 2013 under new management as old landlords move on and newly arrived landords chance their arm on the area. Thankfully for the time being at least, local pubs have stopped closing and places such as The Bell and The Chequers have been reborn and are regularly packed with locals both old and new. Pubs have become the heart of the community again with landlords like Rob, at Higham Hill’s The Warrant Officer hosting everything from food pop-ups to Walthamstow’s WI, The Stow Roses. Looking forward I think 2014 will be the year of the pop-ups, whether it be shops or restaurants. People will get bored with the sameness of the average high street and will look to areas where the offer changes almost every week. This idea particularly suits the streets of E17 with its small shops and apparently endless supply of exciting and original creatives. All we have to do is tell London it’s all here and they will come and surely spend.

It is strange now to think that the E List started only in February, originally with a slim 8 pages. Since then it has more than doubled in size and the listings have been joined by regular columns from Walthamstow Diary, Spotted Walthamstow and our resident historian Karen Averby. Thanks to them hopefully the magazine has become a richer and more entertaining read and much more than just a ‘list’. Demand has certainly grown with several venues being cleared of their supply within days and even hours of the E List being delivered. It is good to hear that it’s so popular but we will be making some small changes to the distribution and working with venues to hopefully better meet the growing demand. We also have lots of other exciting ideas with regards to content and what the E List can offer, so watch this space. Part of the E List’s immediate plans is to provide cultural listings for our neighbours Leyton and Leytonstone, so please start sending these through as soon as you can to e17_listings@rocketmail.com and also spread the word. We will also be looking for possible distribution points so any suggestions welcome plus any in E17 that we’ve missed. Anyway hope you enjoy this festive issue, and get to meet Santa at least once this month as from the listings he certainly seems to be doing more personal appearances than the average Kardashian. Enjoy the holidays and a very happy New Year. Paul Lindt, Editor

In which architectural historian, Karen Averby uncovers curiosities and stories from Walthamstow’s rich and varied past.

The Spirit of Walthamstow Christmas Past: December 1913

shopper, optician Owen Aves, Hoe Street advertised perfectly fitting spectacles and pince-nez as “Sensible Christmas Presents.” For those struggling financially, there were several charitable organisations supplying food. The Christmas Hamper Fund distributed 950 hampers to families in need, and The Old Folks Christmas Dinner Fund hosted Christmas dinners. Fundraising events included a charity football match between the police and the Wood Street Tradesmen and sold-out variety shows at The Palace, High Street and Crown Picture Palace, Wood Street. Plentiful Christmas social events included the party of the local Band of Hope (a temperance group) and a Cinderella Dance at the Conservative Club. Musical events were popular: a smoking concert (a live music event where men would smoke and talk politics) was also held at the Conservative Club, and Shern Hall was used for singing concerts. Christmas coastal getaways were available on Christmas and Boxing Day from the Midland and Southend Railway, with

Then, as now, Christmas shopping for food and presents was important, and was made easier by some stores selling everything under one roof. The District Supply Stores Ltd at 7-11 Coppermill Lane, 143 Carr Road and 2, 7 and 8 Rushbrook Crescent offered “the finest Christmas stock in the district,” selling fancy gifts, Christmas crackers, turkeys, geese, hams and cakes; they also provided Christmas and turkey clubs to help spread costs. Pearks Stores at 34 and 224 High Street were renowned for their impressive window displays, and claimed to sell the finest Christmas fruits and fancies at the lowest prices. Novelty Christmas and New Year gifts could be bought from T. Venables Ltd, a house furnisher and drapers at 102-105 and 115 High Street. Clothing shops offering luxury gifts included A. Whitefield & Co, 292-298 High Street and Cooper, Cooper & Co at No. 85, with their ‘bewitching’ range of furs including squirrel, musquash and racoon. For the less frivolous

cheap return tickets to Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff and Southend-on-Sea. Of course, many Christmas celebrations involved Walthamstow’s parish churches. Their interiors were elaborately decorated with holly and evergreens, some with chrysanthemums and lilies on the altar. Carol services included Christmas Eve carols at St Saviours Church, Markhouse Road and a Christmas Day service at St Mary’s Church, Church Hill. Interestingly, over 30 weddings were solemnised at St Mary’s during the Christmas season, twenty one of those on Christmas Day itself. Despite notable differences, there are some interesting parallels between Walthamstow’s Christmases past and present. So this December, whether Christmas shopping locally, donating to the Eat or Heat foodbank, or attending a Christmas ‘do’ or carol service, think of your 1913 counterparts, who were similarly occupied. Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmastime. www.archangelheritage.co.uk

LOCAL HERO

Nat Di Maggio

You’re originally a country boy, what was it like growing up in Somerset? I had an idyllic childhood, born and raised in the heart of the Mendips. There was a real sense of community, especially in the winter when we were regularly cut off. My father was Sicilian and my mother from Somerset. Both came from very large extended families and food has always been at the heart of them. As children we spent every summer in Sicily. My father’s family is Arbëreshë and speaks an Albanian dialect. While language separated us, meals brought us together and I think this is where I developed my love of cooking. I trained as a chef before moving on to Bath to work in restaurants and hotels, as a chef and organising events. You’ve now lived the majority of your life in London and Walthamstow. What do you like about city life? I came to London in 1990 and settled with my now husband in Walthamstow in 1992. The moment we arrived it felt like home. The mix of people, the sense of community, the open spaces and its accessibility to almost everywhere make Walthamstow unique. It’s at the heart of the city yet also a retreat from it: a home from home. You run a venture called Queenie’s Kitchen. Who was Queenie? Queenie’s is Jacky Bergman and me. When we met we created Queenie as a metaphor for who we were and what we stood for in food terms. Queenie is everybody’s favourite aunt, usually your Mum’s best friend. Think tabard, bright pink lipstick; the person who looked after you and cooked you tea when your Mum was working late. What kind of food does Queenie like to serve and where? We provide hearty, home cooked, American diner style food, such as barbeque pulled pork, steak burgers and weekly specials. We have a residency every Thursday at Ye Olde Rose & Crown and we also cater for festivals, art shows, craft fairs, private family functions and birthday parties. 12

You are also involved with Eat or Heat. Great name what does it do? The Eat or Heat food bank was created to ensure that more people could afford to heat their home and feed themselves in these unstable economic times. Who are the people who visit the centre every week and how does the scheme work? It is non-denominational and currently feeds at least 30 families in Waltham Forest. All families are referred to the food bank through registered agencies such as childcare, social welfare, Citizen’s Advice, GPs. There has been a tenfold increase in referrals since the recent benefit changes. There are 20 food drop off points in and around Walthamstow. We are limited, currently, to only distributing tinned and dried food at the moment because we lack refrigeration. Due to huge local support we have now raised the funds to achieve charitable status, which will open doors for further funding. It is our vision to ultimately provide nutritional support, menu plans, cooking demonstrations, together with financial and benefit advice. You’re involved in many of the fund raising events for Eat or Heat, these are often social occasions too. Yes food brings

people together on many different levels. The Eat or Heat café (last Friday of every month) and supper clubs are communal eating events, where interests are shared, friendships are made, all while raising money for the food bank. In fact we have had our first romance, which is still going strong. Perhaps we’ll have our first Eat or Heat wedding…. In 2013 we raised around £10,000, so a big thank you to our supporters. Our fundraising philosophy is to be creative and engage the local community. Shaking tins is not our style. We’ve organised cabaret nights, classical concerts, comedy nights, supper clubs, and a pop-up café to raise the charity’s profile, raise funds and connect people. In 2014 we will start ‘Curry & Quiz’ nights, a masked ball and the ‘Great East End Art Market’, lots of exciting stuff so make sure you are on our mailing list. www.eatorheat.org To finish tell us something magical about Walthamstow that you love. It’s got to be the community, everyone new comments on it. I know I like to chat, but even popping out to the shop can take several hours, bumping into people along the way - café owners, shop owners, publicans, the people on the street. To be known is to belong and I belong in Walthamstow.

Anyone who attended November’s Eat or Heat’s Christmas Fair may well have already felt warmed to the beaming countenance of this month’s local hero, Nat. Here we chat to him in one of his favourite haunts, Le Délice on Hoe Street.

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 The humble alarm clock, a device invented by people who have no problems getting out of bed in the morning to torment those of us who struggle. The instrument of torture next to my bed goes off at six in the morning, but it takes a number of snoozes before I can prise my eyes open and face the world. I start work at ten so I could stay in bed longer but I get up to go for a run before the working day starts. It’s difficult at this time of year heading out in to the dark morning, but sometimes what I see on my route more than makes up for the early start.

“I get up to go for a run before the working day starts”

Just after leaving home I pass the junction of Low Hall Lane and Downsfield Road, looking down Low Hall there is a spectacular view of the city, red and white lights sparking in the morning sky. This is one of my favourite views in E17. The steel and glass of the distant city in the same field of vision as the old Low Hall farmer’s cottages, Old and new, the changed and unchanged side by side. The next stage of my route takes me through the split leaf sculpture on Coppermill Lane and then down on to the marsh. Rounding the corner next to Springfield Marina and joining the path next to the River Lea I am often met by the most amazing sunrise. The sky a mixture of gold and red, the reeds and rushes first in silhouette against the morning sun then shimmer in the light as I run past. Sometimes a low mist lies on the marsh making it feel like I am running through a cloud. Sometimes the air is so still and clear I can see the smoke from house boat chimneys gently curling and creeping ever upwards, filling the air with the smell of burning logs. Out in the open, in the half light of the early morning I let my mind wander. It is the perfect remedy to a busy working day. www.walthamstowdiary.com 14

Bus Station photograph ©Peter Hall

‘Nando’s is coming to Walthamstow – but, is that really newsworthy enough to be on the front page of Walthamstow Forest News?!’ Kwame: Yes, Yes it is!!! Alex: It’s hardly worthy of celebration is it? It’s KFC on a plate... Walthamstow deserves better! Andy: “Deserves better!!” For whom? Just because it doesn’t fit it in with your bourgeois fantasy of Walthamstow as a utopian colony of artists it doesn’t mean it’s not wanted! Christopher: Whilst I personally wouldn’t go, I do see Nandos as a slight ‘step up’ to the usual trashy ‘food’ outlets in Walthamstow. It’s a start. Giovanna: Wow wow wow! This is excellent news! Richard: More chicken and chips...Just what Walthamstow is lacking! Alice: I’m hoping for Honest Burgers or Wahaca PLEASE! Mattyy: Love Nandos! Booom Andy: It’s not fooking fried chicken, it’s BBQ’d. There’s loads of pretentious ponces slagging it off who have never even been. Gem: Nandos rocks! I only need one more stamp to get a free chicken. Amanda: Love stories that brings out all the snobs who wouldn’t touch chicken and chips... here’s a thought if you don’t like it DON’T EAT IT!!!! Simples... ‘Today is World Kindness Day, with that in mind I wanted to ask - what’s the kindest thing a stranger has ever done for you in Walthamstow?’ 31 11 Laura: Walked me most of the way home in the pouring rain holding their umbrella above me, despite not speaking any English. At the junction where we were to part ways he handed me the umbrella and before I could object he had run off into the night and into the torrential rain! Tony: Left me a mattress outside my house. Amy-Louise: Not shouting “oi pinky does the

carpet match the curtains?!” Coral: Paid my bus fare when the driver wouldn’t break my fiver. Rose: Marry me ;-) Rose: Oh.. sorry.... a stranger....doh! He is strange though.... Does that count? ‘Interested to read that Turner prize winning potter Grayson Perry is selling his Walthamstow workshop on Spruce Hills Road after 12 years. Here’s his amusing quote in the Evening Standard, “I’ve moved out just as Walthamstow is becoming gentrified. My work is done.”’ 23 57 Jools: Gentrified? Pah Paula: A group should get together and turn it into something really COOL xxxxx Jannah: Very sorry he is leaving. Knew his work before moving to E17 so happy he was local. Darien: Wonderful guy, wicked sense of humour, always loved his work… Steve: If our new Nando’s wants to ingratiate itself as a genuine local business, they should have a menu special called Grayson Perry-piri ‘I want to buy a flat in Attlee Terrace on Prospect Hill, Walthamstow. Does anyone know the safety of that area and have any advice about the estate and neighbourhood?’ 3 64 Peter: Live at Prospect Hill, lived in Walthamstow all my life. The gang issue is nothing like it used to be. The area has turned around in recent years. Those commenting that it’s terrible are obviously delusional would love to know what heavenly hedonistic part of Walthamstow they live in. Stirling: The feral youth buying sweets from the newsagent look like they’re on their summer jollies from Harlem!!! Lee: I’m a postman in the area, stay away Walthamstow is shit.... Stephanie: I live on Prospect Hill, have done for 3/4 years and have rarely noticed anything which made me feel unsafe! Glenis: Don’t do it I luv, I grew up there but now it’s like the Bronx

Join the conversation at www.Facebook.com/SpottedWalthamstow

Eleanor: I understand the Bronx is rather nice these days. Sarah: To be honest all places are ruined by chavs and gangs, sadly it’s the UK all over :( Lol: ‘…UK all over?” There’s your advice. Leave the country now, as fast as you can. There’s nowhere in the UK worth living. Maybe you could dig a deep hole and live in that? Duncan: “The Bronx”? Makes me laugh! Violent crime rate is higher in rural areas than in urban ones. 100% FACT! TXTXTXTXTX: My missus is from Edmonton. You want to talk about rough areas? Have a look at N9 & thank your lucky stars. Makes Walthamstow look like Hampstead. Tony: Yesterday we heard artillery fire from enemy lines. The air siren sounded and we all hid in the bomb shelter. We’ve only got 2 days’ worth of rations. I only got the pants I’m wearing and I already turned them inside out!! What shall I do? These war zones!! ‘Congratulations to L Manze Eel, Pie and Mash Shop on Walthamstow High Street, which has just been given Grade II listed status, due to its design and historical interest. Great news!’ 71 , 504 Yvonne: Happy to know part of my childhood will stay for my grandkids - great news :) John: This was and is still the best part of a visit to the market. Great news. Sarah: My grandad took my mum when she was a child, my grandad and mum took me every Saturday afternoon, now I take my kids. Soon I’ll take my grandchildren xx Sophie: I LOVE MANZIES!!!!!!! Sylvie: Always take my Dad there when he stays, he’s such a charmer and went as a boy. He’s 87 so he must have been one of their first customers, x Sharon: Can vividly remember watching the guy cutting up the eels outside the shop on market days. He regularly drew quite a crowd! I must say I personally detest pie, mash and eels, but in a strange way, I love the memories. 15
