Sharon Drew at the Tokarska Gallery The monthly guide brought to you by
COVER STAR Painter Sharon Drew Contemporary abstract artist Sharon Drew will be exhibiting her paintings at Tokarska Gallery, 163 Forest Road, E17 from 5 June in her solo show LIGHT-WAVES. Nigel Pollitt, poet and former visual arts editor of City Limits magazine, writes, A happy state of flux animates each piece and engages the viewer with gorgeous colour, mesmeric line and seductive ambiguity… Drew’s paintings combine intellectual rigour with aesthetic delight to please eye and heart, and stimulate the mind.
In addition to the LIGHT-WAVES exhibition, E17 Art House are also featuring Drew as ‘Artist of the month’ where her St Ives-inspired limited edition prints are for sale. Based in Walthamstow and exhibiting for over 20 years, Drew completed her MA Fine Art at Byam Shaw, Central Saint Martins School of Art, 2003.
Drew comments,
www.tokarskagallery.co.uk/
Part of my practice as a painter is to work from observation out in the landscape. I regularly travel to St Ives, Cornwall, and each time there are moments when I cannot believe what I am seeing. The light and colour can be truly extraordinary and are continuing source of inspiration.

Drew was selected as Art Consultant for Art Is, providing the paintings for lead character, Lulu, an aspiring artist. This new British musical feature film, directed by Barry Bliss, starring Paul McGann, Gary Kemp and Emily Beecham, premiered in April.

elcome to a special bumper edition of the
E List. With so much happening in Walthamstow this June our regular 12 pages just weren’t going to cover it, hence the 16 page issue. June is a time of summer fairs, summer fetes and in Walthamstow at least, summer feasts. As this edition hits the streets we will be entering a month-long celebration of the world of food and drink with Waltham Forest’s first Appetite festival. Organised by the people behind the E17 Art Trail, the festival sees an explosion of pop-up eateries in pubs and homes across the borough, special events in our local restaurants and cafes, all topped with a gourmet foody market from Auntie Maureen on the 29th. There will be opportunities to learn to cook better, healthier or even just more exotically at various cookery classes set up by local enthusiasts keen to share their passion.
All this means that not only can you try an unfamiliar cuisine, (personally I’m trying for revolutionary Hungarian on 24th), but also it can be an excuse to discover new parts of Walthamstow you may not have ventured to before. Who can resist checking out a pop up meal entitled ‘Walthamstow by the Sea’ happening at the Warrant Officer in Higham Hill on 14th June? Though mainly about foody fun Appetite also has a more serious side. As we face challenging times, Walthamstow’s strength as a community comes to the fore as the festival features several brilliant local schemes which aim to help our most vulnerable residents with accessing food, cooking skills and nutritional advice. Look out for details of two of these, Eat or Heat and 7days4stow inside. Obviously Appetite events feature heavily in the E List this month but for a more comprehensive schedule including events in the rest of the borough, look out for the Appetite guide (it looks like a newspaper) or visit the event website www.appetitefestival.co.uk. Also try www.hornbeam.org.uk/ whats-on for even more food related events. Finally I am really pleased to welcome to the E List this issue local blogger, Walthamstow Diary, a fellow Stow obsessive who has promised to share his local mussings every month. But that’s not all, for one month only we have a guest column by local architect Matthew Eyles, who looks at options to maximise the potential of your home. Anyway here’s wishing you a sun, food and fun filled month! Paul Lindt, Editor

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 I’m a big fan of the marshes, I run across them, walk over them and have enjoyed many a lazy afternoon sitting by the river Lea watching the world go by. On Sunday 5th May I spent a different kind of day on the marsh taking part in the annual beating the bounds walk. This ancient tradition stems from a time when maps were rare. The location of parish boundaries needed to be passed on to younger members of the community, so the elders would lead a boundary walk showing the youngsters where the parish borders lay. We met our fellow walkers at the Princess of Wales Pub and we were handed a willow wand to carry on the walk. Soon after setting off we reached the first boundary marker, before we knew what was happening a small boy was swept off his feet, held upside down and his head was gently bumped on the marker. This delightfully bonkers tradition was designed to make the next generation remember the location of the markers. As our large group walked along the Lea and across the marshes we attracted a fair bit of attention, I suppose that shouldn’t come as a surprise. If I saw a group of 50 people carrying branches and upside down children I’d probably stare as well. The walk lasted for around three hours and was interspersed with historical tales of Vikings and disputed borders. Spending an afternoon surrounded by the lush green of the marsh I was struck by how lucky E17 folk are. We have fantastic spaces such as Lloyd Park, St James Park, Hollow Ponds and the Lea marshes right on our doorstep. The fact that these places have survived the onslaught of railways, reservoirs and builders is thanks to generations of dedicated locals who have stood up to developers to protect our urban green spaces. And I’m so glad that they have been protected, our parks, marshes and woodlands help to make Walthamstow a great place to live. www.walthamstowdiary.com 7
Eat Or Heat? Both please No one in Waltham Forest should have to choose between food and fuel. The Eat Or Heat food bank was created by Frank Charles and Gary Nash who both work with families living in highly deprived areas. As the recession kicked in, both started seeing too many saying: “I can heat the house or feed the family”. Eat Or Heat is aiming to make sure no one in Waltham Forest has to make that choice. The non-profit, volunteer-run food bank is working towards full charity status by July 2013. It already feeds around 30 individuals and families weekly, all referred by a professional body, all affected by austerity. How can you help? Donate food. There are ten locations across Walthamstow you can drop spare tins and sealed cartons and packets of food to (no fresh food or jars currently, they break), including popular community spots such as the Hornbeam Café, The Rose & Crown and The Mill during “Food Bank Fridays”, on the last Friday of each month. You can also come to one of Eat Or Heat’s fabulous fundraisers. The regular Supper Club runs third Thursdays monthly (June is Sicilian). £15 for three courses, and very popular, so book to avoid disappointment! This month there’s also a Cake & Art Fete on 30 June in Walthamstow – see the listings for more details on how buying tasty cake and great art can help feed local families in need! www.eatorheat.org
7days4stow In tough times by working together we can help those most in need Walthamstow is under pressure as never before. Cuts to public services and welfare, combined with the rising cost of living, unemployment and wage freezes mean many in our local community are facing financial difficulty in 2013. That’s why many Walthamstow residents are taking part in the #7days4stow campaign. Each of them is giving the equivalent of a week of their time over the course of the year to helping run projects that support those affected by these changes – from helping run our nightshelter and foodbank, to the E17 Community Kitchen, the campaign against legal loan sharking, befriending vulnerable residents and creating career opportunities for our local young people. Together we are working to try to protect Walthamstow’s future as best we can. Anyone can join in so if you would like to please contact my office on 020 8521 1223 or email me stella@workingforwalthamstow.org.uk. LOCAL HERO
Helen Lerner
Where are you originally from? How long you have lived in Walthamstow? Originally? We are Sephardi Jews who left Spain during the Inquisition in the late 15th century and came through Portugal and the Netherlands to settle in England after Oliver Cromwell readmitted us in 1656. Sounds better than Ilford where I grew up! We moved to Beulah Road in 1992 after falling in love with the area when visiting the Walthamstow Village festivals. The house was pretty derelict when we bought it. My in-laws said it was just like their house that was demolished in the East End slum clearances. How has the Village changed in that time? It was a lot grittier then but there was always the same feeling of fellowship underneath. I’ve kept scrapbooks full of every event we’ve held and it’s amazing to look back and see how things have changed for the better; it’s also a stark reminder of how young we all were when Teresa Deacon and I started the Walthamstow Village Residents’ Association Environment sub-committee. At the first Spring Clean in 2003 we filled the Village Square with rubbish we’d collected – the pile was six foot high. The brick planters were thickets of green spiky shrubs with litter stuck in them. There was a lot of graffiti too; we used to tackle it ourselves and became known as the Village Scrubbers! What would you like to see happen in the area in the next five years? This is my pet subject! I believe that we’re all responsible for the area outside our homes and we should treat it like our very own. I’d like to see everyone caring for their front and back gardens. In urban areas every green space is precious: our gardens, all taken together, help to control urban temperatures, absorb rainwater to prevent flooding, support wildlife, provide space to grow food for us and pollinating insects and give us exercise and relaxation. I believe gardening is a cure for all ills! What can people do right now? First, when putting up posters on lampposts please don’t use sticky tape, it takes the paint off which is very annoying, our volunteers spend hours repainting them. Please use string or cable-ties instead which can be cut away cleanly! And it’s great that most owners are cleaning up after their dogs but please, please bin it properly, don’t leave it bagged in the tree-pits or worse still, throw it over the railway embankment to get caught in the trees and bushes. Sorry, rant over. Walthamstow Village has won gold and London’s Best Urban Community several times in the RHS Britain/London in Bloom awards. How has it affected the community? Winning prizes and attending awards ceremonies is a lovely reward but just the icing on the cake. Wherever a Bloom group is active it has a positive impact making an area greener and cleaner and this instills pride and a feeling of ownership; we call it the “Bloom Effect”. We have made a big effort to use non-municipal, perennial plants and our Graham Sherman has designed the beds for year-round colour and interest. 10
The plants are also chosen to be nectar-rich which will attract bees and butterflies. The Village looks great all year which attracts visitors who boost the local economy by using local shops and restaurants and attending our events. It’s amazing how much our Monthly Gardening Club can do when we work as a team. It is great fun and people say nice things and bring you cakes and drinks, followed by the satisfaction of a good job done after honest toil. Anyone is welcome to join us – you don’t need to be a gardener! Other areas in Walthamstow, like Cleveland Park are now getting involved in London in Bloom. How easy is it for people and their streets to get involved? Groups are popping up all over Walthamstow. It only takes one person to get started, folk soon join in. It’s Your Neighbourhood is a free, non-competitive category of the Bloom. Participants receive advice, support, an annual “judging” visit and an award ceremony. Bob and Caramel from “Cleveland Perk” have just entered for the second year running. It’s so easy to get involved and you can either contact me or London in Bloom directly for help to get started. Can we embarrass you by mentioning that you received a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours. What does that mean to you? I was thrilled that someone, and I still don’t know who it was, nominated me for services to the community in Walthamstow; it’s nice to be appreciated. Most of all I was pleased that my parents and the boys were proud of me. Of course the award also belongs to all our lovely volunteers who make such a difference and to the others on the main WVRA Committee, and Teresa and Graham and my poor, long-suffering John who all work so hard behind the scenes! What are your future plans? I’ve been asked to write a monthly blog for the RHS about community gardening and we’ve been given permission to start a food-growing project on some unloved beds in Beulah Road. Also I’d like us to work on improving the walk up to the Village along St Mary’s Road. So much to do and so little time – I’m sure everyone feels the same!

Wander the highways and byways of Walthamstow village and you can’t help but be wowed by the explosions of colour on virtually every street corner and the lovely flower meadow opposite St Mary’s. This, and the general sprucing up of the area is largely down to the efforts of this month’s hero, Helen Lerner, and a merry band of volunteers.

Maximising your home’s potential It is hard to miss the fact that this part of Walthamstow is currently undergoing something of a boom. This is not the first period of growth and change in this area. The one which perhaps most informs the Walthamstow we know today was in the mid to late C19th when the arrival of the railway linked the area to central London. Much of our present housing stock dates from this period when the general pattern was for two and three-bedroom terraced houses. Whilst the late 19th century housing has charm and much to recommend it, by modern standards, it is in some ways lacking. Typically the smaller houses have downstairs bathrooms, the rear of these houses can be rather gloomy particularly at ground floor, and kitchens are usually rather small, with poor access into the garden. The Victorian and Edwardian housing stock and also the later 1920’s and 1930’s semi-detached properties, all lend themselves well to modernisation and extension. The following outline the most common alterations: Extensions: It is most usual to extend to the rear (allowing larger kitchens, dining and living areas etc.). Where a property has Permitted Development rights (generally that includes most properties except those within Conservation Areas), it is possible to form an extension at 3m deep across the rear of the property. For a 1930s type property it is usually possible to construct a 3m extension right across the rear. For the Victorian and Edwardian properties which are essentially L-shaped in plan, it is generally possible to construct a 3m deep extension off the rear part of the main house (ie effectively an infill to the side of the “outrigger”) as well as a 3m extension off the back of the “outrigger”. Loft conversions: In the larger types of house a loft conversion is a good way to gain an additional en-suite bedroom(s). For houses which benefit from Permitted Development rights, it is generally acceptable to form a full-width dormer to the rear of the roof. There are specific requirements to meet the Permitted Development legislation but in general terms a dormer can be up to 40m³ providing that no part is higher than the original main roof and that the rear wall is set-back at least 20cm from the main rear wall of the house. For properties within a Conservation Area it may still possible to convert the loft providing a rear dormer. Under the requirements of Planning and Conservation Area legislation, dormers are generally smaller than those which can be constructed under Permitted Development legislation. Planning legislation generally requires that dormers to the rear roof slope should be set-in by a minimum of 1m from each side boundary, set back 1m from the rear wall of the main building and lower than ridge of the main roof.

Original Features and a Lovely Location. This bricked fronted two bedroom house offers two reception rooms, an attractive kitchen, first floor bathroom, and is situated in this wonderful location at the Beulah Road end of Maynard Road in Walthamstow Village. Offering potential loft conversion (STPP) this fantastic home could be potentially made larger if required and we have been advised that the property is in the Henry Maynard School catchment area.
Naturally there are other potentials for extending and improving the variety of properties in this area but I have tried here to highlight the most common approaches.
