abies are only the beginning. To me the idea of bringing a little poppet into the world and with them the potential for unbridled chaos and 18 years of erratic sleep patterns seems terrifying to say the least. To do this and then embark on a business, cradling a babe in one arm whilst mopping a trail of dribble from your business plan with the other seems needlessly reckless. Having a child is defined as a life changer as is starting a business, moving home and changing jobs so it is never recommended to embark on more than one at a time, yet it is amazing how many people I meet do exactly that. This month we talk to Sarah Moore, the mum behind the successful drinks and sorbet company, Woodford and Warner on page 20. As the company has grown she has brought more mums into the company, perhaps reflecting the old adage if you want something done well give it to a busy person. We also meet James and Malin of Bygga Bo on page 24, who at the time of going to press have been waiting days for the arrival of their new child, who seems reluctant to make an appearance, but who will coincide very neatly with the birth of their new homewares venture and pop-up venue from its former incarnation predominantly as a café. Finally whether it be your first or last child you are entering a very privileged club, a club whose members literally have the future in their hands, and a club with access to a huge social support network. Being a parent can be lonely sometimes so just knowing that you’re always welcome at places like BeBop Baby at the Trade Hall or Mothers’ Hub on Wood Street will give you the support of a whole new group of very understanding friends. Which brings me to congratulate Angie and all at Mothers Hub on the Hub’s second birthday this month. Loneliness and isolation was a recurring theme in my chat with this month’s Local Hero, Beryl Streader on page 28 It is a challenge that many of us will face at some point in our lives. She found it after the death of her husband, which lead to her to discover volunteering. As someone who lives with a disability she also recognises its debilitating effects on other disabled people’s lives and that it is often their isolation rather than their ‘disability’ which holds them back. And so she joined the Waltham Forest Disability Resource Centre to help break this pattern. Please read what she has to say. Finally thank you to everyone who has completed our E List survey so far, you might notice a few tweaks in the coming months as a result. I have decided to run it again this month so if you haven’t done so yet and have 5 minutes to spare please visit www.theelist.co.uk/survey. Paul Lindt, Editor editor@theelist.co.uk @TheEList_e17

COVER STAR Stuart Moore Originally from London, I grew up under the big skies of East Anglia, but returned to the city around 1997, finally moving to Walthamstow 7 years ago. A self-taught photographer, I’ve been taking images since I was a child, when I used to develop my own black & white prints at home. Things are very different now with digital, but there’s something about film and good photographic paper which is hard to replicate. I prefer to capture the best images I can in-camera, then accentuate what’s already there. There are some exceptions though, like the abstracts I’ve created recently and the ‘train picture’ above. I have a camera with me most days, as you never know what you might see or when. One misty morning in January, I was on the Walthamstow to Liverpool Street train when it stopped for a few seconds. That was it, the composition and light were just right. Reflections from the inside of the window just added to the surreal nature of the shot. I then uploaded the picture to the ‘Walthamstow Life’ group on Facebook. The reaction was completely unexpected and really encouraged me to create more local images. I love London and cityscapes but it was a visit to the Skygarden which kicked off a series of images both from there and the Shard. The light can be fabulous so it’s hard not to get some lovely results with those beautiful colours.

Although I don’t earn my living from photography (am still working on that one), I am taking it more seriously now and the number of requests for prints is increasing, which is great. I showed at the Art Trail for the first time this year at the Rose & Crown and Wynwood Art District and received some great feedback. I am currently showing my prints at: • E ast of Eden Yoga & Pilates Studio, Hatherley Mews – Abby and Naomi approached me when they were starting the business and kindly allowed me some exhibition space in reception •Q ueens Arms pub, Walthamstow Village – a big thank you to Laurence for offering me some wall space in the dining area •W ynwood Art District – where some of my prints are included as part of Tiggy’s group exhibition until November 17th One of my portraits is currently in the London Independent Photography Annual Exhibition which finishes 1 November at the Embassy Tea Gallery (Bankside, SE1) To see my latest work:

My parents would leave me in their care when they went for bread – don’t stray now, they said But I was gone, already, lost in their spools the tabby grey and black ones twisting and turning over and under the ice. I stroked their sleek backs let them circle my wrist the innocent smell of estuary was my perfume when I was four on tiptoes with my friends the eels silver eyed and curious, smiling shyly, waiting for me as I for them to play amongst the lobsters and the brazen crabs. Dipping and diving over and under the melting ice in and out of my child’s fingers I let them circle my wrist a shiny bangle, smooth and cold and up my arms as far as we dared. A tiny snake charmer I was when I was four. I froze when they told me. Legs jellied on the stairs, hands stuck like clams. But we don’t eat our friends, I whispered Through a wall of ice. And when they came for me I crept beneath the bed where the cat and I held our breath and each other. Lorna says “I’m a London-Irish poet and artist and a member of Forest Poets and Creative Bloc. I was born in Leytonstone, left but then come back again. I am deeply rooted in the area. This poem is based on true events which took place at a Saturday morning fishmonger’s stall at the Bakers Arms.” Find Forest Poets on Facebook and Twitter @ForestPoets 13

Cult With No Name

Velvet goldmine The Wanstead Tap, situated at the lower end of Leytonstone, is rapidly becoming a venue of choice for performers, authors, cooks and comedians. And it’s not just the wall of craft beers or the fine dining that attracts the discerning punter. Aficionados of good music will be making their way to the Tap on November 21st to see a night of live music performed by some exceptional talent. Singer/songwriter John Ellis has toured and recorded with major names in the UK music business including Peter Gabriel, The

Stranglers, Adam Ant, The Vibrators and many more. He will be performing a solo set of original songs. And he might even throw in something from his punk past if you ask nicely! Post punk electronic balladeers Cult With No Name deliver a dreamy set of electronica that wins them great reviews from the music press. They have recently collaborated with Tuxedo Moon on a soundtrack to a documentary about the making of the cult David Lynch movie Blue Velvet. They have also released 7 albums of their own unique music. Kameliya Ivanova, Kami to you and me, is a wonderful young singer/songwriter who is gaining a devoted following. And no wonder! She has the voice of an angel and writes with a passion and a depth that belies her youth. It’s just a matter of time before she is signed to a major label, so catch her before you can’t get tickets for her shows.

John Ellis 14

The evening will be compèred by The Angry Boater a.k.a comedian Joel Sanders. If you want to find out how stand up comedy should really be done, Joel’s the man to show you. But don’t ask ‘What’s it like living on a boat?’

yellow curry with pumpkin & tofu With the seasons changing from Summer to Autumn and halloween kicking the month of November off in style we thought a warming pumpkin based dish would be an appropriate ingredient for our third recipe in our E-list series. The Sunday Farmers Market in the square is the best source for the tastiest and freshest pumpkins at this time of year. Palm sugar or jaggery can be found in the Sri Lankan shops on Hoe St. If you can’t lay your hands on this you can substitute with golden sugar although palm sugar/jaggery does add some extra depth to the flavour. For strict vegetarians/vegans you can substitute fish sauce for soy sauce or salt.

Mapping London lives through film Oliver Parkin, who lives in Blackhorse Road, E17, is a filmmaker currently working on a fascinating series of shorts for Chocolate Film’s 1000 Londoners, some of which will be shown at a Stow Lounge this month. Here he talks about the project and his background as a film maker to Deborah Talbot. 1000 Londoners is a series of three-minute films that tell a story about individual Londoners, reminding us of both how unique people’s experience of this city can be, as well as what connects them. The literary author Jonathan Raban once wrote that London was too immense to conceptualise, and people coped by creating individual maps through it. 1000 Londoners seems to be one way to document those subjective maps. Oliver (pictured filming above, image bottom right) is interested in storytelling, and the ability of film to empower and liberate. He has 16

made music videos, worked on film projects with prisoners in Woolwich, and is planning to work on four films about tattoo artists for the Museum of London’s forthcoming exhibition, Inking London. Here he talks to Deborah Talbot for the E List. Could you tell me a bit about your background? I got into filmmaking in a very roundabout way, which I think is increasingly normal. Filmmaking has become more democratic as a result of technological changes. I was working in social services as a temp while making short films in my own time.

Then during a meeting we were talking about how to record user experiences of the service, and I suggested that I could film them, which was a great experience. Then I made a video installation called ‘Simulated Warfare’, an idea which came from discussions about the impact of violent video games on children’s behaviour. So I had this idea to see the visual responses children have when playing these games. Because of ethical concerns, which I completely understand, I wasn’t able to work with children. So I got a group of adult friends to play these games.

What did you find? How expressive the faces were. There was a mixture of reactions. Some people would smile when they got a kill, and there was one girl who looked terrified. It was selected for the Summer Exhibition (Royal Academy) 2013, and sold after a week to this art collector. I had to go and drop it off at his flat, which was this huge apartment on the Thames. He had all his artwork covering his wall, and had this small TV on the wall, and that’s where he was going to play my film on a continuous loop. It was very surreal. So now you’re working for Chocolate Films, and working on the 1000 Londoners project? Can you tell me a bit about it? The idea came from Creative Directors Mark Currie and Rachel Wang, who are also the Founders of Chocolate Films, and I am part of a team working on it. It aims to create a snapshot of London during this time, to show the diversity of London. It says on the website that people can only be included when they self-declare as Londoners. Why was that important? I think it was the idea that London is diverse, so that’s the one thing that connects people. So we had one film, made by Daniel Onyia

and Mark Currie, about a Polish cage fighter. He’d only been in the country six months, but he had been looking forward to coming to London, and as soon as he got here he wanted to integrate. He said he had a job, was paying his taxes. He was a Londoner. That’s how he saw himself. Given the films are only three minutes long, how do you decide which are the most important issues? You think, what aspect of their life is interesting, or has not been told before. So I made a film about a guy called Adam. He’s disfigured, and every film about Adam is about his disfigurement. So when I spoke to Adam, we found a common interest in how geeky we are - both into science fiction, and video games, so we talked about that. Our shared interest seemed unique. So the film didn’t mention anything about his disfigurement, because why should it always be about that? I think we’re just trying to show how complicated people are, in those three minutes. And maybe being a Londoner is about losing a fixed identity in some ways? Yeah, the anonymity of the big city…

What do you hope people will take away from them? The style of each film is different, both because they are made by different filmmakers, but also that the individual dictates the type of film you make. So, for example, one film is about a Shaolin Monk. His film was all about how strong and disciplined he was, and he spoke very profoundly and poetically. I felt this film had to be cinematic. So what do I want people to take away from it? It’s just an introductory piece about someone. That everyone is interesting, and if you are a filmmaker, you are voyeuristic, nosy, fascinated by people. It’s just showing that passion to other people. You live in a big city, but people are open, they do like to chat, and it’s about remembering that. Selected films from1000 Londoners at the Stow Film Lounge Nightcrawlers – 5 November Easy Riders – 19 November Fight Club – 26 November www.stowfilmlounge.com for details Films can also be seen as part of the BFI’s Britain on Film season.

Abracadabra! Magic Box has evolved and is on the bill for the London Jazz Festival, no less!

Photos: Session © Angie Hicks; Lottie © Jennie Scott; Sara © Richard Ecclestone

Local parents with kids under 5 know professional actor Lottie Allen very well after the organic success of the Magic Box storytelling sessions. Now, with jazz singer Sara Mitra, they have devised a live, interactive one hour show ‘A Magical Musical Story Box’ especially for the little ones in our lives. This newly devised theatre piece takes place as part of the London Jazz Festival - with two shows at the Vortex Jazz Club each Saturday, Lottie Allen on November 14th and 21st. Unfortunately not in E17 but Dalston is just a short hop away by train - and this rather special event is definitely worth the trip out of the borough. ‘A Magical Musical Story Box’ attendees will get to follow anti-hero Captain Wonkynose and his fabulous crew of pirates! Children are invited to travel with them across the seven seas. Will they be able to overcome any sea monsters? Will they stumble across any hidden treasure? Who’s got the map? What kind of adventure will everyone go on? As the children act their way through with as much make-believe as they can muster – only they will know! Lottie and Sara will guide the audience through the theatrical

piece - with a blend of brand new original compositions, traditional songs, improvisation techniques and classic storytelling. The children will also be exposed to a full range of jazz instruments thanks to Time Out ‘Critics Choice’ live performer Sara. Getting to hear the different sounds and a chance to experiment with them. As regulars of Magic Box sessions in Walthamstow will know, Lottie really gets the kids involved and entwined in the story as it unfolds there is never a prescribed ending to Magic Box theatre pieces. Now so successful - after starting as a word of mouth weekly session at Mother’s Hub in Wood Street - Magic Box now regularly appears at children’s events, private parties and festivals such as this one. Lottie and her crew encourage a lot of imaginative play, which is as much fun and wonder for parents and carers watching as it is engrossing and hilarious for the children. And don’t forget the legendary cake at the end to reward for everyone’s imaginative efforts. Farah Ishaq

Woodford & Warner - A local family company with a distinctly international flavour Founded in 2013 by Sarah Moore who has a BSc in Chemistry and many years of retail experience, this is a local homespun company; at its heart is family and home. Words by Kirsty McNeil-O’Connor. Photos by Leonie Morse. Sarah Moore is sitting at a large wooden table in her kitchen surrounded by cooking utensils, huge metal pots, cardboard boxes and a new batch of beverages brewing by the door. However, Woodford & Warner’s story begins thousands of miles away in Trinidad & Tobago. Sarah’s father, Rodgerson studied at Leeds University on a scholarship where he met her mother, Stella from Romford. They married and returned to 20

Trinidad after graduating. By then the couple had 2 children, and went on to have 4 more, of which Sarah is one. Sarah, now 41, has fond memories of her time in Trinidad, the food and drink and especially sharing ‘Julie’ mangoes with her dad, fresh from the tree. However, after Rodgerson’s premature death when Sarah was just 10 years old, it was Stella, her English mother who taught her to

cook Caribbean food. At that time Stella was living in Manchester, she returned to complete her studies, bringing Sarah over to the UK in 1985. Sarah went on to study for a BSc in Chemistry at Manchester University where she met her husband, Jason Moore. An interim job with clothes shop Jigsaw led to her defection from Forensics to Fashion (she was accepted on a post graduate forensic science course

at Strathclyde University). With promotion, Sarah’s job moved to London while Jason, who was working in construction, remained in Manchester. The couple married and eventually Jason joined Sarah in Walthamstow. When Sarah took a new job with Reiss, launching their flagship London store, she received shocking news that she had a brain condition called Chiari Malformation, which required surgery 3 weeks later. However, conscientious Sarah postponed the surgery so she could work for Reiss over the busy Christmas period. She recalls the excruciating 3-month recovery, which she overcame with the loving support of her husband and family. Shortly after returning to work, Sarah was promoted to Area Manager for Reiss and her first child, son Alexander was born. When she was 5 months pregnant with her second child, daughter Molly she was made redundant. Unlikely to get a job while pregnant, Sarah knew she had to change careers. She has been making her own Sorrel as Christmas gifts for friends and family for over twenty years. Not to be mistaken for the sour herb of the same name - Sorrel is made from Hibiscus sabdariffa (common name Roselle) which again is not to be confused with the ornamental hibiscus shrub with large colourful red flowers - this is a completely different genus, it is a species of Hibiscus that is native to West Africa but widely grown and used throughout the West Indies. It is the calyx - the outer whorl of the flower that is used, rich in citric acid, vitamin C and antioxidants. “Each Island has an individual recipe and spices they add to it.” Sarah explains. “The traditional Trinidadian way is to infuse it with cinnamon and cloves.”

Facebook: WoodfordAndWarner

When Sarah was naming the company, she lived in Warner Road, Walthamstow and her mother lived in Woodford - She went online to do a quick search to see if this name was already taken and there was a happy coincidence. “In Port of Spain, Trinidad’s capital, there is an intersection between Warner and Woodford Streets. This sealed it for me.” A good friend, Clare Sydenham urged Sarah to book a stall for Auntie Maureen’s Gourmet Food Fair, part of the Appetite Festival, held in The Bell pub in Walthamstow in 2013. “MP Stella Creasy tweeted to support the product and said it should be on sale in the Spar.” The award winning convenience store in Walthamstow Village agreed and became the first store to stock the Sorrel cordial. The cordial is a heady combination of exotic and familiar, part tangy freshness with rich red depths and a cocktail of spices that instantly transport you to warmer climes, or roaring fires. This drink is at home on a festive table, warmed up for fireworks night or poured over ice on a summer’s day. 100% natural, this non-alcoholic beverage makes a fantastic mixer for any spirit or is a fabulously coloured aperitif when added to Prosecco, as a cooking ingredient for game dishes or an alternative to wine as a reduction - its adaptability makes it popular for families and with the stylish packaging it is the perfect gift. Listening to her customers is paramount to Sarah’s success. “Jason made it possible, looking after the children after a long week at work so I could have stalls and tastings at the weekends and the people of Walthamstow are amazing, so supportive and encouraging.” Sarah smiles. Many of her customers know the Jamaican version of Sorrel with its addition of ginger - she listened and launched a new range, opting to use low G.I natural Agave syrup to replace sugar after customer feedback. The original flavour is not lost with the addition of ginger, but through careful balancing, the spice

adds a palette-pleasing tingle. The original sugar version is still available on request and has just been awarded 1* by the Great Taste team. Local parents form Sarah’s 7 strong team, all employed on a casual basis. The packaging has been through a recent redesign; the artwork, painted by Leytonstone artist, Carne Griffiths was created using paint made from the actual sorrel flowers Sarah sent to him. His beautiful organic style suits her ethos perfectly. This design was used to launch the artisanal sorbet she has created, manufactured at Taywell’s with Alaistair Jessel. She is particularly excited about this product as it is a totally new flavour for the UK market and is a Christmas flavour too. 24 hour arty people October saw an innovative new exhibition space revealed in the windows of the much loved Frank Ison shop on Walthamstow’s Orford Road. Photos Tom Gold. Making Waves was the inaugural show of the Walthamstow Village Window Gallery (WVWG). A collaboration between local businessman and passionate investor in the local community Neil Collins and creative village resident Danny Coope, the WVWG brings an end to years of blank, frosted office windows and the creation of a public asset and conversation piece, from this beautiful, Victorian corner shop. It’s an unusual, purely street-facing exhibition space, prominently positioned beside the village square on a largely pedestrianised street. Curator Danny Coope describes it as “providing a gallery experience from the safety of the pavement to an audience who may not ordinarily visit galleries, while engaging seasoned art lovers and visitors to nearby attractions such as the award-winning William Morris Gallery and world-renowned, neon heaven God’s Own Junkyard.” WVWG aims to create a series of shows by professional artists and creatives, tapping into local talent as well as from further afield. There will be curated shows of quality painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, film, site-specific installation, one/two/ three man shows, group shows, guest galleries and Christmas windows, all to surprise, delight and even provoke. And of course the gallery hopes to be a key venue on next E17 Art Trail too! Making Waves II by Tony Blackmore 22

In his speech Danny Coope the gallery curator (above left) thanked Krystyna and Ashley who work in the office for putting up with the ‘small’ loss of light and local carpenter Toby McNicol for his design and construction skills. For the opening night it was thanks to In Vino Veritas of 21 Orford Road for the fine wines, to photographer and DJ Tom Gold, for capturing the event and spinning the discs alongside the lovely Maureen Sparkles, and finally and most importantly to all the artists involved, for offering their art and advice.

Scandi Style Bygga Bo are riding the wave of Scandinavian design fever and bringing its minimal and bold aesthetic to the borough. Changes are afoot. Karen Dunn finds out more. Photography: Tom Gold. Their cinnamon buns are the stuff of legend and now James and Malin Hamilton, the couple behind Bygga Bo, are planning to bring more Nordic inspired homewares and events to their stylish corner of Walthamstow. Only two years ago if you were thinking of buying a gift or grabbing a coffee, the area around Bell Corner is unlikely to have been your first port of call. But since opening in April 2014, Bygga Bo were swiftly followed by a whole host of small businesses making it a destination rather than a stop on the way to the station Bygga Bo prides itself on being a family business and the welcome when you step inside makes it feel like you’re visiting a friend’s, very stylish, home - complete with one of the prettiest gardens in Walthamstow. 24

However, James and Malin have decided to go back to basics and have scaled back on the café side of the business and are focusing on their first love – interiors. With items sourced from both Scandinavia and local makers, the creative space is set to host more live events and pop-up restaurants. It’s also become a hub for the local Scandinavian community and everything they do always has a flavour of home. The E list popped in for a coffee and a cinnamon bun (well, it would be rude not to) to find out how this creative couple built a bit of Scandinavia in east London and to discover their exciting plans for the future… So, how did Bygga Bo begin? James: We started with a pop up in our house as part of the Appetite Festival in 2013 with homemade cakes and our homewares. We were packed solid with people from start to finish, which was a bit of an eye opener! Malin: I’m from Sweden and have always worked in interiors. We’d been talking about a concept store where we could share everything we love from Sweden for so long when the pop up went well we decided to go for it and started looking for premises straight away. When we found the shop it was still a hairdressers, but the space was perfect, so we sold our house and bought the whole building.

Did you have to do a lot of work to get it how you wanted it? M: We had to do absolutely everything. It was a big job and we had to do it fast because at the time we were living in it too! J: The garden was just a pile of earth and the stable at the end of the garden had a hole in the roof. It hadn’t been touched since it was built in 1897. It was good though because it meant we were able to design the space exactly how we wanted it and were even able to incorporate some of the old hairdressers mirrors and dryers into the design. M: Everything we do here is the way we would do it at home. We think of this place as an extension of our house because everything is either chosen or made by us. What made you decide to scale back on the cafe side of your business? M: The shop was always supposed to be as much about the homewares and events as the café, but as the food side took over, we found we had less and less time to grow other parts of the business. J: This summer we decided to make the leap and just offer coffee and our cakes so we could focus on growing our own homewares range and putting on more events and live music. We may reintroduce our own food at some point, but at the moment we’ve got an amazing guy doing wood-fired pizzas in the garden at weekends and we plan on doing more pop-up restaurants too. What events do you have planned? J: We already have live jazz on the last Sunday of every month curated by a local Swedish girl who has an amazing network of musicians. We’d love to host more music and arts events and we’re hoping to get a permanent alcohol license too. M: We’ve got a couple of Christmas events coming up including a glogg evening where we will be serving food, mulled wine and music all done in a Swedish style. We also host an amazing Swedish creative music group for children on a Wednesday. When we first moved here I had no idea there were other Scandinavian parents in the area, so to find so many has been lovely. We’ve become a real hub for the community and I’d love that to grow even more. J: People can also hire the outdoor area for their own parties and we’re always interested in hearing people’s ideas for events they think could work in the space. How are the homewares you sell going to change? M: We’re slightly expanding our own clothing line and we want to develop our range of cushions and wash bags too. We’re always sourcing new homewares when we go back to visit our family in Sweden and we stock a lot of items made by people in Walthamstow as well. We’re really passionate about handmade so it’s great to be able to promote it. It’s affordable too, so buying a gift for someone doesn’t have to break the bank. How do you find working with your other half? M: Before we started, people warned us that it could end in divorce! We knew it would never be a problem because he’s my best friend and I couldn’t ask for a better workmate. Our skills compliment each other’s and we do everything with a smile on our faces. We love that our children can be a part of the shop too and we can really run it as a family.

Architectural historian, Karen Averby uncovers curiosities and stories from Walthamstow’s rich and varied past

“without the inconvenience of too much food, or too much clothing” Charles Dickens condeming life in the workhouse in Oliver Twist Vestry House on Vestry Road is well-known as the museum for Waltham Forest and as the home of the borough’s archives. Originally, however, it was the parish workhouse, completed in 1730 to house the parish poor following a trial at premises on Hoe Street from 1726. An acre of Church Common was purchased by the Vestry and the new workhouse was erected.

The notion that the poor should earn their keep underpinned workhouse ethos; an inscription above the main door includes the words “if any would not work neither should he eat.” Inmates were taught discipline, piety and practical skills and children were also taught reading, writing and arithmetic. In 1780 the Vestry recommended that the

The workhouse poor were provided with clothing and food. In 1776 men and boys were recorded as being given a coat, waistcoat and breeches, two shirts, two pairs of stockings, a pair of shoes and a hat or cap. Women and girls received a gown, two petticoats, a leather bodice, two pairs of stockings, a pair of shoes, two shifts, two handkerchiefs, two caps, a hat and two aprons.

Eight rooms included a vestry room, two kitchens, a pantry and storerooms and bedrooms on the first floor. In 1747 each bedroom had a small chest and four beds, each with two blankets and a rug. The workhouse was enlarged in 1756 and by 1779 there were eleven beds which an inspection report deemed sufficient for the thirtyseven inmates. The number of inmates averaged 30-40, with over half being babies and children. In 1747 there were two elderly men, ten women aged 20 to 80 and twenty-two boys and girls aged 5 months to 18 years. Although numbers subsequently increased, the types of people entering the workhouse remained constant, commonly being deserted or orphaned children, unmarried mothers, deserted wives with young children and elderly folk.

summer and 9am in winter. Work resumed until 6pm in summer and 5pm in winter, with an hour for dinner. Evening prayers were followed by recreation until supper at 8pm or 7pm, with bedtime an hour later. On Sundays inmates attended the morning service at the church of St. Mary, sitting in reserved pews at the rear.

Food was initially supplied locally, and proposed menus included one reliant upon bread, porridge, cheese and broth, with the ominously sounding ‘thick milk’ for Friday’s dinner. From the 1770s the menu was improved and included fresh vegetables from the workhouse garden. The building remained a workhouse until at least 1841 when inmates were transferred to the new West Ham Union workhouse in Leyton. www.archangelheritage.co.uk

LOCAL HERO

Beryl Streader

Hello Beryl. Are you local? I have lived within the same quarter of a mile in Leyton all my life, including 18 years in a tower block, before moving into a house almost below it when it was taken down in 1995. What do you love about the area? The area is very diverse. The mixture of ages, nationalities and cultures always keeps life interesting! You like to get involved in the local community. I love working with people and have all my working life. I volunteered with the DRC and was asked to join the management committee after about a year. I also volunteer at I CAN Ventures (www.icanventures.org), part of the Ellingham charity, which gives training and support to people with learning disabilities. How did it all start? I am a widow, I lost my husband in 2012, and have a grown up son who lives with me. I found I needed to be useful after David died and got involved in lots of volunteering. I tried to do too much at first and soon found I wasn’t able to maintain the hours, I was making myself ill. I have since managed to set myself a more realistic schedule, and you’ll find me at the DRC Hub three mornings a week, and one Saturday a month for the Saturday stitcher club. In 2005 you were awarded an MBE. I got it for service to the crown and disabled people, I enjoyed my time at the palace and meeting Prince Charles. My mum, husband and son came to support me, however we really thought the Queen would be in attendance, and my mum was so looking forward to seeing her. She was very disappointed when she wasn’t there! Afterwards they gave us a video of the ceremony, and all through it you can see my mum with a scowl on her face! 28

You’ve mentioned your work with the DRC. Tell us about it. The DRC is about helping disabled people who want to learn, develop themselves and make the most of their lives. It’s about giving people confidence and pride. For me it’s where people with disabilities who are often alone can be part of something. The classes and events are all open, and we gain new members all the time. I can see people like I was, looking for something to be a part of. The wide range of classes has something for everyone, and provides a great way of integrating everyone together, while passing on skills and enjoyment. How did you first discover the Centre? I had met Margaret Elias the then centre manager, through my job some years ago, and when I had some spare time she suggested I might like to run a crochet class, I counter offered with patchwork and quilting and we were off! What’s it like being a volunteer tutor? I love my classes, the group is so diverse. They all have different needs because of their disabilities. I am a problem solver and things like finding a way to thread a needle for a visually impaired student or for someone who has limited use of their hands, requires a creative solution!

The classes can get quite full, and we have found that they can be demanding at times but I have found the help of a few volunteers, Jean, Liz, Margaret and new recruit Gill make all the difference. You have a Saturday course too. Two years ago I started the Saturday Stitches Club, because so many people wanted to learn patchwork and quilting, but because of things like work couldn’t make the weekday classes. It runs on the first Saturday of each month. For this I am pleased to have the support of lovely volunteers like Rhonda and Linda. What other classes does the Centre offer. All sorts! We have various fitness and lifestyle programmes such as indoor sports andhealthy eating. Then in addition to my patchwork classes we have things like life drawing, art therapy and starting in November a beginner sewing course. Courses are at any length with the short ones at five to six weeks. You mentioned earlier the importance of volunteers. We are really lucky to have a small group of dedicated volunteers plus the occasional support of a local college who send young people to get experience of working with people with disabilities. We are always looking for new blood! We have people from all backgrounds who are

In a city inhabited by millions it is a sad reflection on our society that so many of our neighbours are left feeling isolated and alone. The reasons can be many, but centres such as the Walthamstow Disability Resource Centre (DRC) are crucial in their role to give people, in this case with disabilities, a renewed passion for life in the company of friends. Paul Lindt talks to Beryl from the DRC.

looking to offer a little of their free time in the support of others and each person brings something unique. People interested in becoming a volunteer can call 020 8534 1589 or email info@wfdrc.org.uk and arrange to pop in for a look around and a chat. It sounds a really fun and rewarding place to be part of, what do you love about it? I love the people! The different things they like or dislike. But they all have one thing in common, they want to be there, out of their homes and mixing with other people. Loneliness I think is a killer, people give up. Sitting in the DRC people don’t get a chance to be lonely, someone’s always doing something! Jane Russell, our Community Project Support Worker is always arranging interesting things like visits to local interesting places. So all in all the DRC is a very inclusive place. How is the Centre funded? As a disabled person I know the difficulties of daily life, the lack of opportunities around today. At the DRC we have gone from being funded, to total self-funding in the last year! We have worked hard to raise money, via events like quiz nights (next one on Friday 20 November) to bingo nights (next one 9 December) to having a stall at the Methodist

church table top sale on Shernhall Street in Walthamstow (next one 10th November) plus selling things made in our classes. In the end most our money comes from donations. At present on our website there is a donation page called Grow Your Own Tenner! This means that every £10 given before 18 November will be matched by another £10 from LocalGiving.com. What’s more if you’re eligible for gift aid your tenner could end up as £21.67! What does the future hold for the Centre? Well we still plan to be here! It’s hard when every penny has to be raised by the stalwart few at the DRC. We are doing everything we can think of to ensure the centre will stay open, and of course raising funds is always right at the top of our list! But we do plan to carry on the most popular courses and also bring in new short courses to keep things fresh. I feel very strongly that we should be an integrated centre with all parts of the community involved. There are many people who don’t think of themselves as a person with a disability, but for example they may be having problems around their health. I am always meeting people locally who don’t even know we exist, let alone what we do!

And finally, personally what would you like to see happen? This is the hardest to answer, want the centre to grow and become secure. The worry of constantly having to raise money to stay open is affecting us all. We are desperately needed, and trying our hardest to keep afloat. So my wish would be more support of centres like ours, the realisation that without our type of support people will become a burden on the other services, The quality of physical and mental health will deteriorate, people will become less independent, many becoming trapped at home and isolated. I would like our centre to be a place were more people can come to overcome there disabilities and grow. UNIQUE GIFTS & FURNITURE, HOMEWARES, JEWELLERY, CARDS & PRINTS 70 Hoe Street, Walthamstow E17 4PG Wed-Fri 10am-7pm, Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-4pm, Closed Mon & Tues

Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 Walthamstow, we all know Walthamstow. Pound a bowl, markets, marshes and a never ending war between drivers and cyclists. Yes, we all know Walthamstow, the place between forest and marsh. We all know Walthamstow, or at least we think we do. There is another E17. This other place is governed by different rules to the one we walk through each day. It’s like another dimension, a wibbly wobbly timey wimey slightly altered version of Walthamstow. It exists in circuit boards and smart phones, keyboards are the weapon of choice, and navigating this other world can be treacherous. Alternate Walthamstow has a name, and its name is Walthamstow Facebook groups.

There are lots of local Facebook groups, and I’m a member of many of them. They can be great places to find out what’s happening in E17. You have to follow the rules though, stick to the paths, beware the moon, and stand back when the facebook hits the fan, and it often does hit the fan. There is more drama on these online forums than on an episode of Eastenders. Each group is slightly different. There’s the one where you can say what you want, but what you say will get deleted if the admins don’t like it. I’ve been kicked out of this one and snuck back in more times than I remember. There’s the one that was set up as an alternative to the first, but is prone to drama. And let’s not forget the other group, the one that is sort of like the facebook baby produced when The Sun and The Daily Mail mated. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking any of these groups, or their admins. Well I may be knocking the tabloid one a bit. I just think those of us who belong to these groups should perhaps sit back, think, and take a breath before we post or reply. If you wouldn’t say it out on the street or in a pub, it’s probably best not to say it online. The groups may be virtual, but the people in them are real. www.walthamstowdiary.com

Thanks to Walthamstow Life, Toss, Whine, Sell or Swap and Walthamstow (unofficial) Tourist Board Terrifying Ken doll for sale. Possibly possessed but not confirmed. Comes complete with a creepy expression and a Hannibal Lecter haircut. He’s wearing a fine black suit, perfect for inviting his friends over “for dinner” and holds a gift for Barbie. The gift box is empty, like his cold cold eyes. Yours for only £3! I live 3 minutes from Walthamstow Central. I would prefer if this Ken doll lived further away... maybe Australia. DB Jimmy Carr and Courtney Cox’s love child? KM: It’s like the end of Seven....don’t look in the box! DCO: I have a friend who, for a month, sent me tiny, plastic nuns in unmarked envelopes. KMD: Could be Yellow Man’s arch nemesis! Ken: “Goodbye mortals. I’ve gone to live with my new family”. New Owner: Ken and I have bonded over coffee. He is feeling very emotional. We have grossly misunderstood him! Turns out Barbie is the real villain, she staged those damning photos. I never trusted her with her unfeasibly small waist! Oh no! Barbie has tracked us down. Here’s Barbie! Walthamstow Sell or Swap Parent’s letting their children wander into my front garden and help themselves to my flowers and large pebbles. Happened 3 times now. It’s not funny.

ML: Get an electric fence. TB: Poison Ivy. AB: Razor wire and shards of glass embedded in the top of the wall. JB: “Know what you need, mate? Landmines” (as Monty Python said) JJ: My pea shingle looks like someone’s filled a bucket from one corner. Don’t you hate it when people go shopping in your front garden?! Walthamstow Whine

DH: Using very large hamster wheels? GL: What a great idea, a never ending supply of unruly teenagers. Could we sell tickets to raise some additional money? Instead of hamster wheels, I think loads of fixed bikes being pedalled like crazy, on their own cycle lanes going nowhere fast DL: We could pay them in hair extensions as a lot seemed to have been lost [in the riot]. Walthamstow Life MM: Anyone else noticed an unpleasant smell - possibly sewage - round Tottenham this morning? JS: Shite Hart Lane? BJ: THFC stinking out north london ;) RS: Yep, definitely Spurs. It’s the smell of shattered dreams. Walthamstow Life

JS: The day the sourdough ran out. PD: The mini holland debate got seriously out of hand that day. AM: Certainly did. They might’ve started pelting cyclists with Edam, Gouda and wooden clogs if the police hadn’t stepped in. MA: I’m still waiting for the first dope cafe. Walthamstow Toss To make Walthamstow even greener there are plans to harness the kinetic energy of E17 teenagers, turning negative energy into something positive. The area should benefit from cleaner electricity, encouraging more green campaigners to move into the area, off-setting the drop in post-‘riot’ property values. In order to roll out the project faster there will be no meaningful consultation, which will save the tax payer a bundle. This money can than be used to pay for extra police officers to herd the teenagers around E17 ensuring enough kinetic energy is produced to make the project sustainable..

I’ve just opened up #E11’s newest Museum at #Leytonstone tube station, all welcome to visit!
