The Stow is alive with the sound of music
The monthly guide brought to you by
COVER STAR Forest Philharmonic Orchestra The E list talks to Mark Shanahan the orchestra’s Artistic Director, ahead of their concert at Walthamstow Assembly Hall on 23 June. You’ve got three English composers for your June concert, including Benjamin Britten in his centenary year. What can listeners expect from his Sea Interludes, and the other works in the programme? Britten’s dramatic Four Sea Interludes from his opera Peter Grimes conjure up moods of the sea, from calm lapping at the shore to a full-blown storm. His great influence was Frank Bridge, so a natural match is Bridge’s The Sea. Elgar’s epic first Symphony completes our celebration of English music. You’re in your 21st year with Forest Philharmonic, alongside your work internationally with leading orchestras and opera companies. What’s so special about this orchestra? The people. They come together on a Monday evening after a hard day’s work and give their all, and I enjoy making music with people with such passion and dedication. We’ve done some great concerts together and I have some wonderful memories. After such a long time together we all know each other and I love directing and guiding them through music they enjoy playing. FPO’s Walthamstow concerts are in the Walthamstow Assembly Hall where top CDs by Decca and EMI have been recorded. What marks this venue out? The acoustics! The wooden panelling is perfect for recordings, and unusually, there is no background noise from traffic. We are very lucky to be able to play in such a great venue that enhances the wonderful sound the orchestra makes, and that’s thanks to support from Waltham Forest Council.
The FPO attracts many young performers and a diverse audience. Why do you think classical music is still relevant to a Walthamstow audience today? Classical music is relevant to everyone, everywhere, from any background. In recent years we’ve done workshops with local schools and the young people have loved them. No-one has told them classical music isn’t ‘cool’, so they just enjoy listening to it and coming up with their own music in response. Along with their parents, they are transfixed watching the orchestra live, entranced by the emotions and sound of the music. What would be your dream project with the FPO? Last year, to celebrate 20 years with the orchestra, I wanted to conduct Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It’s a big piece involving choir and soloists. It was fantastic! Local children performed their own music based on the symphony, so it was a brilliant evening. We’ll try to top that for our 50th anniversary celebrations in 2014-15! A
few years ago I heard it said that Waltham Forest has the highest population of musicians of any London borough. I have never been able to verify whether this is actually true, but by the amount of live music beginning to pop up in the listings every month I suspect it might be. In Walthamstow alone you can spend the evening listening to top live performances of blues, jazz and folk. Folk has gone pretty mainstream recently with the huge commercial success of the likes of Mumford and Sons (personally give me the Pogues any day) but for those of you seeking something a little more interesting then search out this month’s folk gigs at the Rose and Crown. Trad jazz is offered by several of the area’s pubs through lazy afternoon sessions, whereas E17 Jazz will offer you a monthly dose of top contemporary performers at the Orford House. If singing’s your thing then I believe there are at least three choirs in the area, performing everything from classical and gospel, through to contemporary and world music. While visiting friends in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire a few years ago I acquired a taste for the sound of a proper brass band only to discover that we had our very own local award-winning band, the East London Brass. I am not much for marching music so thankfully they play a really eclectic range of material, from the classical, the unusual and the contemporary. Their concerts are always full of surprises. For those who enjoy classical music or comic opera or maybe fancy giving either or both a try, then June will offer two excellent opportunities. There’ll be the year’s big classical concert by this month’s cover stars, The Forest Philharmonic, and performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera Patience, performed by the Chapel End Savoy Players. And what about musical theatre? Well the professional premiere of Phantom happens here this month at the Rose and Crown, featuring a stunning score by Maury Yeston. What’s great about many of these musical groups is that there is sometimes a chance for locals to join in. New players are often welcome to join the likes of a classical or ukulele orchestra or choir, often with little or no experience. All the above has exposed a musical hole in the E List (and apologies to any I’ve not heard about), where is all the rock, pop, rap and garage? Who are the local bands and where are the gigs? If you are part of a band who has a gig coming up in Walthamstow then please get in touch and we’ll give you a listing. I’m pretty sick of lazy journalists harping on about Walthamstow being the home of East17 and Blazin Squad, surely there must be some exciting new talent out there!? Paul Lindt, Editor

Mural on the Marsh – Call for Volunteers Mural On The Marsh is a Walthamstow outdoor art project whose aim is to banish senseless graffiti under the railway tracks at the Walthamstow Marshes. With the help of local artists and volunteers, we want to replace it with awesome community art based around the theme ‘Welcome to Walthamstow’. Thanks to the support of Lea Valley Regional Park Authority, we’ve received permission to develop the idea and turn it into a reality. With 12 separate columns, a low wall for kids’ contributions, and two sets of very long winding walls which trail under the tracks, the space in question is huge. This means we need lots of volunteers. We are looking for experienced mural/graffiti artists/illustrators & calligraphers who want to roll their sleeves up to make this neglected part of the Walthamstow Marshes a more colourful place for everyone. If you’re rubbish with a paint brush, fear not! We also need an army of eager volunteers to help clear the brambles, prep the site, carry pots of paint to the site & back, wash up paintbrushes, make tea & bring plenty of cake to keep everyone fuelled. The plan is to commence painting sometime around June so if you’d like to get involved, please email MuralOnTheMarsh@yahoo.co.uk with your ideas or designs and let us know how you’d like to help out. Describe a typical menu at the Café? Vegetables and fruits are the menu heroes! We offer a short and changing vegetarian menu of salads, soups, pastas, savoury tarts and patties, home made bread, cakes, biscuits and fresh fruit. Our chefs cater for varied dietary requirements. Apart from being a daytime café, it is also sometimes open in the evenings. What can we expect from a night at the Hornbeam? A cosy, fun restaurant, generous portions of extra tasty nosh, a great atmosphere and value for money. For some of the events everyone sits together with others run more like a typical restaurant, where you reserve your table and time. We even have live sitar at some of our curry clubs. Open mic is a crammed, lively event with a variety of entertaining performances where we serve drinks and snacks.
LOCAL HERO
The Hornbeam This month our E List local hero is not an individual but a collective. Sounds a bit dry but if you venture along Hoe Street towards the Bakers Arms you’ll discover a true wonder of Walthamstow. The Hornbeam Café is not only attractive from the outside, you’ll find a friendly, fascinating world inside too. There’s so much more to this place than wonderful food. What is the idea behind the Hornbeam? The Hornbeam is a not for profit community venture organised and run by its users. The kitchen and café make and serve tasty, locally grown, organic food. We also develop local projects focusing on healthy, affordable, sustainable food, waste reduction and conserving resources. It’s is a great place to meet and find out about environmental activities and events. We also offer meeting rooms at low rates for local groups to use. In the last 6 months we have launched 2 big projects - Eco Volunteering and Low Cost Living. How and when was it set up? It was set up as a collective in 1991 by a group of chefs, bakers, and other people passionate about championing healthier and more sustainable living. What is the philosophy behind sourcing food for the Hornbeam? The café serves fresh produce supplied by Organiclea. Sourced from local farmers and growers that supply their weekly veg box scheme and market stalls. Organiclea work with small-scale organic farmers in East Anglia ensuring a regular outlet and fair prices. They also run a crop-share programme for allotment holders in the borough to sell surplus produce. We’re part of a zero waste scheme which sees surplus produce being used by the café, keeping our running costs low and food sustainably and locally sourced. All our food waste goes back to Organiclea’s growing site to be added to their compost heap, helping to grow next season’s food! 6
Apart from your Saturday stall, I hear you also run a fruit and veg box scheme? Hornbeam is a pick up point for Organiclea’s veg box scheme. People sign up monthly, choosing their fruit or veg bag size (from £20 per month) and the bags are delivered here on Wednesdays by 5.30pm. The pick up point has a 24 hour access system which means people can collect at their leisure! It’s a great way to always have super fresh, seasonal produce in your fridge at affordable prices. For more info visit the café or contact Organiclea. (www.organiclea.org.uk / box@ organiclea.org.uk / 020 8558 6880) Being sited near the Alms Houses for retired Bakers, The Hornbeam is home to the Bakers’ Collective. What’s unusual about your approach to bread making? We want to make fresh, handmade, nutritious, organic bread from various baking traditions available in our neighbourhoods. We want to inspire people to bake bread, for themselves, each other and for their communities. Also, all our breads are allowed time for a good fermentation (some of the sourdough loaves for up to 24 hours) which improves the quality of the bread: texture, flavour and nutritional value. We also run baking workshops on Sundays. Appetite, Walthamstow’s month long food festival is coming up in June. How will Hornbeam be participating? The cafe will put on a dinner every Saturday: Fork to Fork - the art of living well. We hope to get people participating in painting a big mural at the Hornbeam on the Fork to Fork theme on Fridays. We also hope to give away delicious local strawberries as part of the food trail. Is the café licensed, and if so what drinks do you serve? Yes, we have a full license. We sell cider from Crone’s in Norfolk, Pitfield brewery’s beers and some organic wines. We will be hosting the Wilcumestowe (the old anglo-saxon name for Walthamstow, meaning place of welcome) microbrewery here and selling their beer from June.

Kat, one of the many great people who work at the Hornbeam
Samuel Pepys famously said that the best wine he ever tasted was from vines grown here in Walthamstow. Are there any particular specialities of the Stow region today? Well it won’t be wine grown in Walthamstow, but Organiclea do have a vineyard in Chingford and they hope to be producing this year. Also Organiclea’s tomatoes, grown from seed used traditionally in old market gardens of the Lea Valley, are said to be the best in the UK by some of the chefs they work with! Walthamstow honey sells out as fast as we can get it in, and dried mushrooms (from Kent and Hertfordshire woodlands) are dried over a wood burner in Tottenham.

Every month Neil Collins of local estate agent, Estates17, takes a look at a different aspect of Walthamstow’s diverse property market – this month Neil continues his look at the options available to first time buyers.
May gallery
First Time Buyer Focus: Part 2 Estates17 staff had a heated debate about where we would buy if we were first time buyers looking to live in Walthamstow, which some of us actually are. This is what we came up with.
Markhouse Road/Lea Bridge Road Roads such as Springfield Road, Albany Road, and Boundary Road offer better value for money than their Coppermill Lane counterparts, yet the housing is very similar. Even as you cross Lea Bridge Road into Leyton there are some fantastic two/three bedroom houses with either first floor and ground floor bathrooms that can still be bought at reasonable prices. The Warner flats in this location normally work out 10-15% cheaper than Lloyd Park and Blackhorse Road areas.
Blackhorse Lane/Higham Hill With the regeneration planned in the Blackhorse Road area we think that the roads off Higham Hill Road and Billet Road offer excellent value properties that will give first time buyers more space for your money. Roads such as Lancaster Road, Shakespeare Road and Clarence Road offer great Victorian homes and Mayfield Road has a similar outlook to Walthamstow Village. We think this will be a big up and coming area. With talk of a new Village on the horizon by the residents rather than the estate agents this could be a great place to buy.
Main Roads Main roads such as Hoe Street, Forest Road, Markhouse Road and Lea Bridge Road offer various benefits. Housing is usually 10-20% lower than residential turnings and often the properties are bigger as they were often originally developed for the wealthy who were first to settle here.
Chingford borders Bus journeys to major tube/railway stations are the compromise here, but is that a massive price to pay for a third bedroom or study/studio? Not everyone needs the City access and lots of us have local jobs. As you go out into these areas life quietens down a bit, as they become more suburban and residential. Not necessarily a bad way to live!
Leyton We think that Leyton has a lot of great period homes and some terrific local amenities, Westfield Shopping Centre is nearby. Put E10 into your Rightmove search and have a look.
Merton Road, London, E17 4 bedroom semi-detached house for sale Guide Price £650,000 - £700,000 Open day 4 May, by appointment only. This imposing four/ five bedroom double fronted residence is located on a desirable road on the borders of Walthamstow Village. Offering square sized reception accommodation on the ground floor, the attractive hallway takes you to a ground floor cloakroom, cellar, a large extended kitchen and diner/ family room overlooking a large rear garden with a south westerly aspect. The first floor has 4 bedrooms and a family bathroom. There is an attached extended double garage ideal for car storage, a creative studio, or separate accommodation. The property also features original windows and cast iron fireplaces. An outstanding opportunity to own a stunning family home in a wonderful location. The owner has advised us that “The rear extended family room has the required foundations to add another level, and the roof was replaced three years ago”. This exceptional home is a great example of the bigger houses available in the area. It provides open and calm living areas and a wide 60 – 70' rear garden providing a tranquil sanctuary in which to escape during the summer months.
