Dear EAA Members, Supporters, and Friends: Those of us who enjoy aviation know that flying is more than a job or a fun pastime. The experience of flight is something that reaches into your soul and changes who you are. Our EAA community is filled with people who know that feeling, whether it’s flying an aircraft, building an airplane, or experiencing the excitement of a Young Eagles flight. Sharing that opportunity and that feeling is the core of EAA. There are hundreds of thousands of people who look to the sky and long to be part of it. They admire those who have forged their own path into the air and found the joy, fulfillment, and sense of accomplishment that is unique to aviation. EAA is determined to foster a vibrant and growing aviation community by providing pathways for all who wish to participate in the world of flight. The Planes bring us together, the People make the experiences real, and the Passion creates the sense of community. Add to that the flying fun that EAA members bring to their experiences, and you’ve found what makes EAA unique among aviation organizations. Those pathways to participation can be found, for instance, through EAA’s chapters, which promote and support aviation on a local, grassroots level; through outreach programs such as Young Eagles that inspire and motivate young people to dream and achieve; or through workshops and resources that expand knowledge and information for those who are discovering more in their own personal world of flight. In this annual report, you’ll read about some of those accomplishments during the past year, the people who made them significant, and the investments that are making the promise of an even better future possible. As I assumed the role of EAA’s chairman in 2009, as well as continuing my responsibilities as our organization’s president, I had the opportunity to reflect on the essence of our EAA community. We are building toward the next generation of EAA leadership, which will continue to personify who we are and what we truly represent – “The Spirit of Aviation.” Sincerely,
Tom Poberezny EAA Chairman and President

creating pathways to
Participation
It’s amazing to see the breathtaking progress that has roots in the flying community, and it exists as strong been made in aviation since the first small group of EAA as ever today. EAA has become an essential element in members founded the organization on a cold January maintaining the freedom of flight, as well as the pathway night in 1953. In the

early years of EAA, it meant building relationships with federal officials (based on respect) and finding solutions for those who build and restore aircraft, or those who restore vintage and warbird airplanes. That relationship allowed EAA to find ways to encourage more aviation participation, whether it was through ultralights in the 1970s and 1980s, auto-fuel research for aviation, or the new sport pilot rule less than a decade ago. It continues today as we look at airspace, security, fuel, and taxation issues much more complex than what could have been imagined 50 years ago. Even at its beginnings, EAA saw the importance of involving the next generation in flight through direct assistance such as Project Schoolflight, which allowed schools to build airplanes. And nearly two decades ago, the Young Eagles program accepted the challenge to fly young people—more than 1.5 million to date—and ignite within them the passion for flight. Today, EAA brings the fascination with flight to youth in ways most familiar to them: through online courses and communities with the
latest technology. EAA is also dedicated to reaching those whose dreams of flight have never wavered from their youth, even as families, careers, and other demands delayed their aviation goals. International Learn To Fly Day and other initiatives allow people to see themselves in the cockpit and achieve the unique thrill of flight. Even in these recent, difficult economic times, EAA is making investments to ensure that aviation’s future is not only welcoming and encouraging, but open to anyone who wishes to participate. Those investments are strengthening the EAA chapter network; developing the technology for aviation enthusiasts to receive information in the ways they prefer; improving EAA’s AirVenture site to maintain the event’s world-class status; and initiating education programs for youth and adults that create clear pathways that motivate and support their dreams of flight. This is EAA’s vision: to foster a vibrant and growing aviation community. EAA. The Spirit of Aviation.

In 2009, EAA hosted four Chapter Leader Academy sessions in Oshkosh, attended by 96 officers representing 61 chapters from the U.S. and Canada. These weekend sessions provide networking and fellowship for chapter leaders including information and ideas they can take back home to enrich their chapter. One-hundred percent of attendees indicated they would recommend the sessions to a fellow chapter leader.
Trial Membership Program An idea generated and developed through the Chapter Leaders Academy is the Chapter Trial Membership program. The new program empowers chapters to give a complimentary, six-month EAA membership to new chapter members. This includes all benefits of EAA membership, including EAA Sport Aviation magazine, free-of-charge for six months. Initiated in 2009, the program is available to any interested chapter and has proven a useful tool to help generate new chapter members.
Online Insurance Process EAA’s continuing quest to reduce chapter paperwork led to the creation of a new online chapter insurance process. Previously, more than 5,000 annual chapter events were administered using a cumbersome and time-consuming process. Chapters can now electronically file for event insurance and receive e-mail confirmation of the event’s approval, including a certificate of insurance. This change has streamlined the process for both chapters and staff, and saves a few trees in the process.
Participating in Online Community Summer 2009 marked the official launch of EAA’s online community, Oshkosh365. Created to keep that “Oshkosh spirit” alive all year long, Oshkosh365 has online community features where users can post pictures, establish a network of aviation friends, participate in webinars, and share information through forums and message boards. Users can also create a personalized homepage with news, aviation weather-ata-glance, and access the world’s largest aviation events calendar.

AirVenture Goes “Green”
A special meeting occurred at EAA headquarters during AirVenture to address questions surrounding the future of electric-powered aircraft. Other topics included ways to increase public awareness and the need to establish engineering and regulatory standards for electric aircraft.
Water storage was put underground, versus a retention pond, due to AirVenture’s proximity to an airport. Porous asphalt funnels the water to a reserve to reuse on grounds as needed. NOTE: Nearly all healthy trees removed were transplanted to other locations on the grounds, and hundreds of new trees were planted, creating green spaces to refresh and provide shade.
Flush Toilets To improve the AirVenture visitor experience, flush toilets were placed in strategic locations on the site: next to the Forums Plaza; between the large exhibitor buildings; and next to Theater in the Woods. Flush toilets in the campgrounds were added to the refurbished shower facilities.
Most significant change A “V” was created to promote better direct access to the north and south ends of the grounds. (highlighted in orange on photo)
What’s next? • Exhibit Hangar C expansion, including indoor restrooms • 250 Camp Scholler electrical and water hook-ups • Chip-sealed roads • More campground shower and flush-toilet facilities • Expanded availability of flush toilets on the show grounds • Even more green space for rest and shade

Overflowing aircraft campgrounds, a filled-to-capacity Camp Scholler, even filled-beyond-belief car parking lots— they all add up to what EAA President and Chairman Tom Poberezny said was “a convention that will go down in the record books as one of the best ever.”
Willan Benches Approximately 100 benches were generously donated in 2009 by Craig and Connie Willan, EAA Lifetime Members, for use on the AirVenture grounds. The benches are in memory of Craig’s older brother, Brent, who succumbed to brain cancer several years ago. More benches are scheduled to be placed throughout the grounds in the coming years.
Brown Arch Returns Since the annual EAA fly-in arrived in Oshkosh in 1970, the Brown Arch has been the traditional entryway to the Oshkosh flightline. After a 10-year hiatus, the Brown Arch returned in 2009 as a special tribute area consisting of nearly 3,000 paving bricks to allowing members from around the world to leave their mark on Oshkosh. A special dedication ceremony was held at AirVenture 2009.
Airbus A380 The world’s largest civilian airliner dwarfed the other aircraft on AeroShell Square at AirVenture 2009, and, for the first time, Airbus offered walkthrough tours of the plane’s interior. Approximately 12,000 visitors toured the aircraft. The A380 also performed a flight demonstration upon its arrival and before its departure.
WhiteKnightTwo Monday’s air show opened with the arrival of WhiteKnightTwo, its first appearance before a general-public audience. AirVenture attendees got an up-close look at the unique, groundbreaking mothership that will lift SpaceShipTwo and its passengers to altitude for launch into suborbital space.
US Airways Flight 1549 Cockpit Crew Captain Sully Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles, the pilots who successfully carried out the emergency ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River January 15, 2009, saving the lives of all 155 passengers on board, gave presentations on Flight 1549 at the Honda Forums Mainstage and the Theater in the Woods. Sully and Jeff also became the new Young Eagles co-chairs in September 2009.

representing all aviation interests
EAA Sport Aviation - Growing Wider Eighteen.
That’s how many months we surveyed our members to find out what they liked, didn’t like, and what they felt was missing in EAA Sport Aviation magazine. We found that our members represent every aspect of aviation, and we needed a magazine that represented this diverse membership. In January 2010, we re-introduced our #1 rated member benefit to appeal to builders, restorers, pilots, and enthusiasts. The all-new EAA Sport Aviation is chock full of all the things that set EAAers apart. Additions include “how do I?” features, member-tested product reviews, guest columnists, and expanded editorial content for all aviation interests. The new magazine was well-received among members and garnered much praise from industry leaders. EAA Sport Aviation magazine received three EXCEL awards from Association & Media Publishing magazine for its redesign. EAA’s flagship magazine was honored with Gold Awards for overall redesign and design excellence, plus a Silver Award for most improved magazine. More than 1,000 entries were received from 91 non-profit organizations in the awards competition.
Electronic Newsletters - Growing Deeper Digging into your passion for aviation. With the content expansion of the print magazine, there was a need for members to dive deeper into their specific interests. This need was met by EAA’s suite of specialty electronic newsletters that are packed full of fascinating, helpful, and detailed information, including links to video, audio, and photo galleries. Launch date: July 16, 2009 (one week before AirVenture) AirVenture 2009 stats: 68,061 visits 369,372 page views (40,000 views of the runway webcam alone) Average new registrants/week: 834 Number of forums: 8, averaging 350 – 400 posts/week Average daily visits: 14,644 Worldwide reach: Visitors from all but 17 countries (175 countries total) Total users signed up in 2009: 42,774

reducing barriers
promoting accessibility and affordability of flight through government advocacy General Aviation (GA) Caucus
In 2009, the House General Aviation (GA) Caucus was created to inform Congress about the value and benefits of general aviation. Co-chaired by EAA member and Representative Vern Ehlers (R-MI) and Representative Allen Boyd (D-FL), the Caucus now includes 116 House members who have pledged support for general aviation. In addition, EAA’s home representative, Tom Petri (R-WI), and EAA member, pilot, and homebuilder Sam Graves (R-MO) are also caucus members. Less than one year later, a GA Caucus was also formed in the Senate. With the same mission, and 29 members strong, these caucuses will serve as a rallying point in Washington, D.C., to ensure that general aviation is well-represented as an avocation, lifestyle, and career choice.
51% Rule In October 2009, the FAA released the long-awaited final order that revised the amateurbuilt aircraft certification policy known as the 51 percent rule. The policy updated and clarified the amateur-built aircraft building process. The fear many had of not being able to build and fly their own aircraft as in the past was diminished.
thousands of people offered their signatures in support of general aviation. newly appointed FAA Administrator randy babbitt also stopped by to lend his signature and support. photo by: hilAry lAWrEncE
The policy highlights include: • “Grandfathers” existing kits • Creates a uniform standard for new kits to be approved • Defines “fabrication” • Provides clearer guidelines for builders who hire professionals to assist with their project • Offers the privilege to build and fly almost any aircraft one dreams
Sport Pilot The FAA’s revisions to the five-year-old Sport Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft Rule went into effect in April 2009. Sport pilots are now allowed to fly higher and safer in mountainous regions, and will find it easier to gain towered airport experience in a powered parachute or weight-shift-control aircraft. In addition, S-LSAs can be used at Part 141 flight schools; this will likely reduce training costs for all student pilots. A key change to the aircraft maintenance rules now allow E-LSA owners, whose aircraft were originally certified as an S-LSA, to perform their own maintenance. EAA provided comments regarding many of these changes.
Zenith Zodiac EAA worked with FAA to address major structural failure concerns with specific Zenith Zodiac models by supporting a detailed and comprehensive investigation by the FAA. More importantly, EAA worked to ensure that FAA understood the need to make details of the investigation available to the public, and which details were most essential for aircraft owners and operators. Through EAA and its members’ efforts, precedentsetting restrictions that would have significantly increased barriers to participation were prevented from being placed on the homebuilt aircraft community. All of this work was done while addressing important safety issues.
Through the Fence EAA met with the FAA Airport Division in Oshkosh to discuss the recently updated Through the Fence (TTF) policy. As a result of this meeting, a working group of industry experts gathered to draft a revised TTF policy that ultimately was submitted to the FAA. Because of this input and member examples, the FAA has agreed that a “one-size-fitsall” approach is not best and will revise its policy.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) In partnership with the CBP, EAA helped introduce and gather feedback on the new electronic Advance Passenger Information System (eAPIS) from members and others flying to AirVenture. eAPIS is a program to move private aircraft customs border crossing filing requirements from paper to electronic forms. In an effort to make this transition as easy as possible, EAA provided a kneeboard-sized quick-reference tool to pilots.

The majority of our nation’s pilots belong to one or both of these organizations, so our members expect us to utilize these strengths in a way that addresses the long-term vitality of general aviation. - Tom Poberezny, EAA chairman and president
Each of our associations has been an effective advocate for GA. But now I look forward to EAA and AOPA working more closely together at all levels to protect and grow general aviation, and to keep it safe. –Craig Fuller, AOPA president
Because of the feedback we provided, EAA was consulted when CBP updated eAPIS. The new document is now the industry standard for private pilots crossing any international border when flying into or out of the United States.
Avgas Alternative Because no viable unleaded alternative for aviation gasoline (Avgas) exists for piston-engine airplanes, EAA and others within the general aviation industry have been actively involved in developing a plan to transition to a new, unleaded aviation gasoline (Avgas) for piston-engine airplanes. EAA is committed to addressing environmental concerns of lead in a responsible and timely manner while maintaining the safety of general aviation and reducing the impact on aviation owners.
EAA and AOPA Collaborate On June 3, 2009, senior staff from EAA and AOPA, including EAA chairman/president Tom Poberezny and AOPA president Craig Fuller, met at the EAA headquarters to discuss ways to partner in support of general aviation. Both organizations agreed to a collaborative, threepronged commitment to protect general aviation interests, promote general aviation safety, and grow the general aviation community. A memorandum was also signed at AirVenture in support of this partnership. photo by: Jim koEpnick

Young Eagles Program Surpasses 1.5 Million Mark On Thursday, October 15, 2009, EAA’s Young Eagles department entered the 1.5 millionth Young Eagle into the World’s Largest Logbook, marking a major milestone in the program that has provided flights to kids age 8-17 since 1992. More than 40,000 EAAers have donated their time to give youth an inspirational and educational first flight experience in a general aviation aircraft.
Expanded Young Eagles Credit Program Successful fundraising efforts allowed for a major expansion of the Young Eagles Credit Program which, since 1995, had awarded a $1 credit for each Young Eagle flown that could be used for EAA Air Academy scholarships. 1.5 millionth young Eagle reno Elliott, right, with his young Eagles certificate, along with flight leader phil haupt. In 2009, the value of those credits increased to a $5 credit per Young Eagle, and the range of eligible activities expanded. This change gave EAA Chapters the opportunity to apply credits to fund youth activities at a local level. Chapters that choose to provide Air Academy scholarships have expanded funding parameters that allow for greater participation and reimbursement of travel expenses.
New Leadership Harrison Ford Passes the Torch to Sully & Skiles After five years as Young Eagles Chairman, Harrison Ford transferred co-leadership to US Airways Flight 1549 Captain Sully Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles. The formal transfer took place in September in Santa Monica, California, during an evening celebration attended by nearly 300 people, including members of 20 California EAA Chapters. Sully and Skiles’s mission is to emphasize training, preparation, and leadership to the next generation of aviators.

In honor of Harrison Ford’s contributions to the Young Eagles program, Jim and Angela Thompson, longtime EAA members and supporters, pledged this challenge grant to EAA. This fund is meant to help support scholarships in Harrison Ford’s name for young people on the path to becoming a pilot. Contributions from other donors will be matched up to $100,000, creating a scholarship fund of as much as $200,000. Commitments to the Harrison Ford Challenge came from such entities as Garmin, which supplied a key pledge to help complete the challenge, and Macy’s, which made a donation to honor a retiring executive and longtime EAA member Jim Zimmerman. Qualifying youth will have completed an EAA Young Eagles flight experience and the follow-up companion program provided by Sporty’s Pilot Shop, the free online Sporty’s Complete Pilot Training Course. These funds can be utilized toward the cost of the FAA written pilot’s exam, flight training, attendance at EAA’s Air Academy, and other pursuits including college attendance. The purpose is to help youth achieve their dreams of flight at whatever level the need exists.
Next Step Program Sporty’s Pilot Shop and EAA teamed up in 2009 to help Young Eagles move from the right seat to the left seat with the Next Step program. The program gives each Young Eagle access to the Sporty’s Complete Flight Training Course for free. More than 2,200 Young Eagles have signed up for this free online ground school since it was introduced in April 2009. And because of the growth the Young Eagles Program has been experiencing, Sporty’s funded a full-time position to manage youth programs and take the Next Step program to new heights. less than one year after the program started, 16-year-old tyler Whitney became the first EAA young Eagle to pass his FAA private pilot written test through the Sporty’s online pilot training course. photo SubmittED

Brady Lane, EAA Multimedia journalist, chronicled his journey to a sport pilot certificate in his Earning My Wings blog. The blog became the number one page visited after EAA’s homepage. Brady became a sport pilot just prior to AirVenture 2009, and is seen here giving his first Young Eagle flight to Austin Feggestad of Omro, WI.
In 2009… • Nearly 80,000 youth became Young Eagles. • 5,500 volunteer pilots logged 26,140 hours flying Young Eagles. • Two Spread Your Wings scholarship recipients received their pilot’s certificate thanks to Peter and Debra Bapes, who provided the scholarships. • 25 students and four educators from Orlando, FL were flown commercially to Oshkosh in April 2009. The group spent three days at the EAA Air Academy discovering the world of aviation. Generous donors Bill and Becky Bryan sponsored the group through the Flight Link program. • Young Eagles pilots earned nearly 50,000 credits (valued at $5 each) in 2008, and 153 EAA Chapters and 39 individuals provided credits to assist nearly 168 campers with some or all of their tuition to attend Air Academy in 2009. Close to $100,000 was returned to chapters to assist these efforts.

thank you for helping grow
participation
in aviation
Thank you to all our donors, who gifted nearly $5.3 million. Every gift, big or small, made an impact in 2009.
Give Wings Give Wings, EAA’s individual donor program, raised more than $390,000 to support youth education and historic preservation programs that help young people achieve their dreams. EAA also distributed close to $300,000 in the form of youth scholarships, most of which are endowed, to EAA educational programs, school visits, and college tuition in 2009.
the gathering of Eagles signature item, the AirVenture Xperimental 2010 mustang (AV-X10) Dearborn Doll built exclusively for the event by Ford motor company, brought the night’s highest single bid of $250,000 to help EAA’s youth programs.
Gathering of Eagles EAA’s annual Gathering of Eagles fundraising event, presented by Cessna Aircraft Company for the fifth consecutive year, was attended by more than 1,100 supporters. Silent auction items raised $100,000, and lunch with Harrison Ford and aviation legend Bob Hoover, combined with a flight with air show great Sean Tucker, attracted a bid of $50,000. The annual Raise the Windsock challenge gave attendees the opportunity to match a challenge gift of $100,000 from Bill, Debora, and Foster Bachschmidt to “Light the Fire” of imagination in the hearts and minds of our youth. The windsock challenge totaled $300,000 and exclusively supports the Young Eagles First Flight program and annually reaches more than 70,000 young people throughout the nation. Donations from live, silent, and President’s Choice auctions help build programs like the Next Step that engage kids in aviation-related activities. The event’s proceeds of $1.9 million will benefit EAA’s inspirational and educational programs that introduce young people to aviation, emphasize math and science, and strengthen the future of aviation.
Share the Spirit Sweepstakes and Young Eagles Raffle Other fundraising activities in 2009 and at AirVenture included Share the Spirit sweepstakes and The Young Eagles Raffle. With the support of Flight Design, Share the Spirit sweepstakes brought in $460,000 to support youth initiatives and historical preservation. Other sweepstakes donors included Chevron, RotorWay International, John Deere, Canon, and Bose. Special thanks to EAA Chapter 22 members for continuing to support the sweepstakes operations. The 2009 Young Eagles Raffle, with the help of Ford Motor Company and Kocourek Ford of Wausau, Wisconsin, raised $110,000 for the program.

Eight members were inducted into the First Wing this year during AirVenture, honoring their support and commitment to increase EAA’s endowed funds through their donation of $5,000 or more, or through a future commitment outlined in their will or estate plan. The annual Memorial Wall ceremony, honoring members “gone west” and traditionally held on the last Sunday of AirVenture, remembered 79 aviation enthusiasts whose support and passion for aviation positively impacted the lives of those around them. Fourteen aviation enthusiasts were honored with a brick at Compass Hill symbolizing their dedication to the spirit of aviation.
Our Business Partners In addition to donors and volunteers, our business partners also play an important role in the financial health of EAA. Sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers committed more than $7.8 million in 2009, an investment that helped fund and support educational programs, advocacy efforts, AirVenture site enhancements, and more. The support from our business partners also allows EAA to keep its dues low and AirVenture admissions reasonable.
Brown Arch The famous Brown Arch returned in 2009 as a special tribute area. Nearly 3,000 bricks became available for members to leave their mark on Oshkosh through personal messages and dedications to family and friends.

thank you for helping grow through your dedication Our volunteers have been the heart of EAA accomplishments since the beginning. Every event, program, service, and even day-to-day operations involves volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without them. Nearly 5,000 people volunteered their time at AirVenture 2009, including those who helped at KidVenture, Women Soar, Operation Thirst, admissions, flight line operations, and maintenance. The EAA
