CONNIE COMING TO OSHKOSH

THE RECENTLY RESTORED LOCKHEED C-121A Constellation Bataan, owned by Air Legends Foundation, will be making the trip to Oshkosh this year for EAA AirVenture 2023. In June, the Connie made its first post-restoration flight out of Chino Airport in California. Bataan’s appearance at AirVenture will mark the first time a Connie, either in its military or civilian airline configuration, has attended Oshkosh since the mid-2000s.

Bataan was delivered to the U.S. Air Force in January 1949 to operate within the Military Air Transport Service. After

being used during the Berlin Airlift to transport personnel and equipment, Bataan was converted into a VIP transport. During the Korean War, it was used as the personal transport of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who gave it its nickname. Retired in 1965, Bataan was pulled from the boneyard by NASA in support of the Apollo program before it was decommissioned in 1970. From 1970 to 1992, the airplane resided at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum before Ed Maloney of the Planes of Fame Air Museum secured it. From 1995 to 2016, Bataan

resided at Planes of Fame’s auxiliary location at Valle Airport in Arizona.

Air Legends Foundation of San Antonio, Texas, acquired the airplane in 2015, with it being flown to Chino, California, in 2016 for restoration

work, which was performed by Fighter Rebuilders.

Bataan is expected to arrive at AirVenture 2023 during the air show on Monday, July 24, and depart during the air show on Friday, July 28.

Meet Team AeroShell

ASK ANY AIR show fan to name their favorite civilian formation act, and the likely answer is, “The AeroShell Aerobatic Team.” No surprise, considering the team’s performance schedule of more than two dozen shows from Canada to Key West, including annual appearances at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Launched in 1985 as the North American Aerobatic Team, the group picked up AeroShell as their major sponsor in 2001, and today their four red-orange and white T-6 Texans are a mainstay on the air show circuit. Set against a backdrop of smoke trails accompanied by a chorus of four Pratt & Whitney R-1340 engines, the team’s fluid performance is the essence of “up close and personal.” Fun fact: Their routine uses 18 gallons of smoke oil per airplane, versus only 15 gallons of avgas.

Now in his 25th year with the team, Mark grew up in Alabama on a farm with a grass strip. His dad bought an airplane when Mark was 5, and Mark recalled, “When my brother and I were old enough to fly, we started fiddling with the Cub a little bit. Early on, we always had an airplane around, and so it was easy to get started that way. My dad liked the World War II stuff, so we had a Stearman, a T-6, and later on he bought a P-51.” Mark began flying the P-51 in his 20s and said the experience “became a steppingstone to other warbirds,” leading to his stint with the Collings Foundation flying its fighters, as well as the B-17, B-24, and B-25. When not flying with AeroShell, Mark is an FAA designated pilot examiner and also a certificated A&P mechanic.

You just have to put in the dedication and time and the willingness to work hard.” Does the team require much practice before the start of a new season? “If you and your wife have been married for a long time and you go get on the dance floor … two moves and you’re right back in step. What you’re seeing is a choreographed routine. It turns into muscle memory.”

Like a professional sports franchise, the group has seen some players come and go. In 2008, team leader Alan Henley suffered a nonaviation accident and was forced to retire. His brother Mark, who’s been on board since 1997, now carries on in the lead position. The sole founding member, Steve Gustafson, can be found welded in position on the left wing. Rounding out the roster are Bryan Regan flying right wing and Jimmy Fordham in

Steve recalled, “My dad bought the T-6 I’m flying today in 1959 and paid $1,200 for it. I soloed it when I was a junior in high school. I flew my first air show in it when I was 19, and kind of went from there.” When asked about the challenges of air show flying, Steve remarked, “To do what we do, it’s not that

Bryan Regan grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana, and said, “I started dreaming about flying when I was a kid.” In high school he was active in EAA and the Civil Air Patrol but obstacles kept him grounded. During college, he ran into a childhood friend sitting on the wing of a T-6 at an air show. “After the show, they put me in the airplane and went up and did a loop and a roll, and within days I started training with my friend’s brother. In 35 days I was ready for my checkride.”

Bryan built time flying skydivers and “riding shotgun on freight runs in a Beech 18.” A job ferrying a Stearman biplane for an air show performer led to a slot with the Red Baron Squadron, where he performed in a Stearman for 16 years. Fifteen years ago he joined AeroShell, and recalled with a smile, “I already had the experience. The main thing was making sure I put the landing gear down.” Bryan reported that his teammates enjoy a good-natured critique of each other’s performance. “If you make an obvious error, you have to buy, and you’ll hear it on the radio … that’s a buy!”

Jimmy Fordham, in his 12th year with AeroShell, is the “newbie” on the team. “I fly the slot,” he quipped with a twinkle in his eye. “I’ve got the best view in the house.”

Another Louisiana boy, he learned to fly from his father. “I’d always been interested in aerobatics, and I remember my dad gave me a ride in a Cessna 150 Aerobat for my 16th birthday.” The aviation bug bit hard, and Jimmy worked his way up the ladder to eventually retire as a captain for Delta Air Lines. Along the way, he became good friends with aviation legends Marion Cole and the Cole brothers, which led to his air show debut in a Midget Mustang. Reflecting on his teammates, Jimmy said, “We like what we do, but we’re also real close friends.”

And that seems to perfectly sum up this airborne troupe. Steve Gustafson added, “We get asked all the time, ‘Who’s the best?’ And I always answer, ‘If you can take a little something from Mark, a little something from me, a little something from Bryan and Jimmy, and put those into one

person, then you would have the best.’ What you see up there is the best of all of us combined at one time.”

TWO NEW AIRPLANES FROM TIMBER TIGER

Retro designs complement company’s Ryan replica

TIMBER TIGER AIRCRAFT of Montrose, Colorado, best known as the designer and supplier of the Ryan ST-L replica kit, announced two new aircraft at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023. A reintroduced “early bird Jenny” replica and a r etro-looking classic called the Kay’s Speedster.

Company owner Nick Pfannenstiel said the rereleased early-bird Jenny now has kits open for sale and is not in a prototype phase, with kits ready to ship in three months. The airplane has been flying since it was originally designed in 1985, with numerous examples flying,

and the design was recently purchased by Timber Tiger.

Pfannenstiel told AirVenture Today that he took the kit, upgraded the hardware, and increased the fuselage size for larger people, giving it a more advanced level of finish. Engines for the early-bird Jenny have historically been Suzuki or Honda conversions, with at least one example sporting a Franklin two-cylinder. Also available as firewall-forward options are the Rotax 582 and Rotax 912. Pfannenstiel emphasized he is supporting all of them, and he will help anyone working with an engine he has faith in.

Now that Timber Tiger is the sole kit manufacturer, support for generation one or generation two early-bird Jenny kits is also supplied by Timber Tiger.

Also released is the new clean-sheet design Kay’s Speedster, which Pfannenstiel emphasized is not a replica. Named for his wife Kayla, the design features a two-seat side-by-side

cockpit “with vintage flair.”

Pfannenstiel said the goal was to build a lot of imagination around the airplane so customers can see what they want — like a Gee Bee Model R Super Sportster or a Travel Air Type R Mystery Ship, but redesigned for modern requirements.

The aircraft features folding adaptable wings, with a wingspan of about 25 feet. The windshield folds forward for easy entry into a spacious cabin, and Pfannenstiel is planning on adding a removable hard top in the future.

Also available are adjustable rudder pedals and a BRS option. (The updated early-bird Jenny also allows for a BRS option.) A huge baggage compartment is also part of the design, which was developed after listening for years to “what people wished was in the ST-L.”

Pfannenstiel spent years refining the shape of Kay’s Speedster and said the design goes “back to the imagination.” Pfannenstiel added he is “not just selling an airplane, but is selling an emotion or a feeling.” He wanted a little more speed from this design so the engine is in the 160-to-180-hp range, intended to be a Verner Scarlett 9S with 158 hp — other options include a Lycoming O-320 or O-360. The Kay’s Speedster is still in development — Timber Tiger started cutting metal for the prototype in mid-May 2023, and is hoping to have it flying by spring 2024.

Pfannenstiel and his wife are trying to grow a family around their products. They are not just selling kits to customers but bringing together builders — their ultimate goal is that builders travel

and go to events together. Describing homebuilders as “dreamers and doers,” it is easy to envision squadrons of early-bird Jennys or Speedsters

drawing a crowd at local fly-ins.

EAA celebrates its platinum anniversary

SEVENTY YEARS AGO, on January 26, 1953, EAA was officially founded. That first meeting took place in a classroom at GranAire Inc. at Curtiss-Wright Airport (now Timmerman field) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with 36 pilots and aviation enthusiasts in attendance. Over the past seven decades, EAA headquarters have moved a few times and the annual members convention and fly-in has shifted around, but one thing has remained the same — the organization’s dedication to spreading The Spirit of Aviation. As we celebrate EAA’s platinum anniversary at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023, each day we’ll share highlights from a different decade of our history.

1950s

January 1953: The Experimental Aircraft Association is founded on January 26. After meeting at his home on an irregular basis, Paul Poberezny calls the first official meeting at Curtiss-Wright Airport and is elected president. While the initial purpose of the group was to assist amateur-built aircraft builders, the organization soon encompasses all facets of sport aviation and the promotion of aviation safety.

February 1953: The first issue of the EAA newsletter, The Experimenter, is published. Written, typed, and mimeographed in Paul and Audrey Poberezny’s basement, The Experimenter eventually evolves into EAA’s monthly magazine, EAA Sport Aviation.

September 1953: The first EAA fly-in convention is held at Curtiss-Wright Airport, where EAA was founded just nine months prior. Twenty-one aircraft and about 150 people attend.

October 1953: EAA member Ray Stits asks Paul for permission to form an EAA chapter in Riverside, California, at Flabob Airport. Although the bylaws don’t allow for chapters, Paul permits it, and EAA Chapter 1 is established. More than 900 active EAA chapters now exist.

1955: Mechanix Illustrated runs a series of articles on a Corben Baby Ace built, modified, and improved by Paul. The series generates a significant amount of interest in EAA and leads to an influx of new members.

1958: The first issue of EAA Sport Aviation is mailed to members in January.

1959: The EAA fly-in convention moves to Rockford, Illinois, after it becomes too large for Curtiss-Wright Airport.

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2023 provides the general aviation community with the ability to attend a number of forums and to learn about many different topics, subject matters, and issues. Those interested in hearing the status of the industry’s transition to an unleaded fuel will have the opportunity to hear from a number of different perspectives. These begin with an update from the FAA and industry’s Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions (EAGLE) initiative in the Theater in the Woods today at noon. Included in the forum will be an update provided by each of the four sponsors developing a candidate unleaded fuel as a potential replacement for 100LL. Throughout the week, there will also be a number of forums presented by fuel sponsors and engine manufacturers highlighting their views on the issue.

EAGLE INITIATIVE: COMMITMENT TO AN UNLEADED FUEL

The general aviation industry trade associations, the American Petroleum Institute, and the Federal Aviation Administration established the EAGLE initiative in 2022 with the goal of eliminating the use of leaded aviation fuels as soon as practicable without adversely impacting the safe and efficient operation of the existing GA fleet, but no later than the end of 2030.

FOUR FUELS PURSUING UNLEADED SOLUTIONS

There are two pathways available to obtain FAA authorization for the use of a new fuel: (1) an FAA aviation fuel fleet authorization process established by Congress through a collaborative industry/government testing program called the Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI); and (2) the traditional FAA aircraft supplemental type certification (STC) process.

There are two active fuels in the PAFI test program as part of the development and testing process: fuel producers Afton Chemical teaming with Phillips 66, and LyondellBasell partnering with VP Racing. Both recently adjusted the treat rate of their respective octane-enhancing additives to better balance engine performance and fuel production. Both fuel developers are continuing in the program and shipped fuel to undergo critical detonation and endurance testing with expected completion this summer before moving into full scale fleet

There are two fuel developers pursuing traditional FAA STC approval of high-octane unleaded fuels: General Aviation Modifications Inc. (GAMI) and Swift Fuels Inc. On September 1, 2022, the FAA issued an approved model list supplemental type certificate (AML -STC) to GAMI for G100UL unleaded avgas. This AML-STC represents the first FAA authorization for use of a highoctane unleaded fuel for general aviation piston aircraft and marks the beginning of the complex work that remains to identify a commercial pathway for production and distribution necessary for the fuel to be viable in the marketplace and become available at airports across the country. Swift is also developing a high-octane unleaded fuel and has made application to the FAA while working to obtain an AML-STC for eligible aircraft and engines. Swift has publicly stated that it hopes to achieve initial FAA STC approval for a 100-octane unleaded fuel (100R) in 2023.

EAGLE COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING ALL UNLEADED FUEL CANDIDATES

EAGLE’s efforts to support all fuel sponsors continue as member companies of the sponsoring associations provide technical support to the PAFI testing of the Afton Chemical/Phillips 66 and LyondellBasell/VP Racing fuels. Additionally, GAMI and Swift Fuels are supported in their efforts as sponsoring associations and member companies, including producers, distributors, FBOs, and manufacturers that continue to work to facilitate stakeholder understanding of the fuels to enable support for deployment and use. EAGLE supports each of the fuel developers Afton/Phillips 66, LyondellBasell/VP Racing, GAMI, and Swift Fuels. EAGLE understands that each company makes its own business decisions in choosing what path to pursue for FAA approval/authorization and its approach to commercialize and deploy into the market. However, regardless of their approach, FAA safety approval/authorization and acceptance and support of key stakeholders who must make the business decision to produce, purchase, transport, store, dispense, and use a new fuel in order to be successful in commercialization and deployment into the market are necessary.

2023 Dorothy Hilbert Award Winner

Bonnie Fitzsimmons

EAA FOUNDER PAUL Poberezny was the main contributor to why Bonnie Fitzsimmons chose to incorporate aviation into her life. After dedicating her time volunteering in the world of aviation, Bonnie has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Dorothy Hilbert Award, given annually to a female EAA volunteer who exhibits the same passion and dedication as the award’s namesake.

Bonnie grew up in Elgin, Illinois, and attended St. Ed’s High School. After graduation, Bonnie ended up opening a Zayre department store. In the electronics department of Zayre, Bonnie’s present husband of 50 years, Craig, was an employee at her store. Craig is also the present chairman of the Comm Center, handpicked by Paul Poberezny and Ron Scott. Paul came to Craig hoping to find the perfect two-way radio communication for the convention. Eventually, Craig and Paul met up, and the friendship between Bonnie and Craig and Paul blossomed.

This is the 44th EAA convention Bonnie and her husband will be volunteering at. The convention has grown and developed tremendously throughout the years, and Bonnie has contributed significantly to that growth within EAA. What was once 50 radios for communication between EAA staff and volunteers is now 680 radios.

Bonnie and the ground crew command the radios to communicate with other groups so EAA runs smoothly, especially during the air shows. They work with all the air bosses and performers to ensure they have everything they need regarding air shows. On top of ground communication for the air shows, they do all the sound work.

Bonnie and Craig have built up a team that makes AirVenture possible. This consists of around 40 people who specialize in radio communications. This team is necessary because they take care of entering all the phones during the air shows and the phones coming into AirVenture. The team is 24/7 and has different shifts, fully operating when the air shows happen.

“So, we are a big piece of the air show itself. I think that the thing that I am most proud of, too, is that no one complains about the job that they do. Everybody loves it. Everybody does what they need to do. They come, they know, they are trained, and everybody is cross-trained with each other,” Bonnie said. “It has been a great life for us. It really has. We raised our three kids around this environment and the air show world, and we worked for Bill for 25 years. So, it has been the volunteering and the working, and the fun times are there. It can be a grand old time if you are around it. Let me tell you. It is one big happy family.”

Bonnie and her husband also come up before AirVenture to prepare for the convention. Bonnie mainly works in the EAA Wearhouse and helps the manager tremendously. Bonnie assists in taking charge of all the volunteers who come in, and the manager takes care of all the hourly waged people. Despite it being work, Bonnie sees it as an opportunity to connect with other people, and

it’s a meaningful part of her life, especially when it comes to caring for the interns who interact with her.

“Since I have been in the Wearhouse, a lot of the kids that are college kids become interns. So, then I nurture them in whatever fields they want to go in. Ryan, one of our guys, came on board this year; it is his first year. He says he really wants to be in communications and all that. I said, ‘Well, what kind of communications do you want to be in?’ He said, ‘I want to be in publications and broadcasting and all that,’” Bonnie said. “So a good friend of ours on the grounds here is Dick Knapinski. So, he went down and talked to Ryan, and I like to nurture these young kids. I ask them how they all like what they are doing and what they are going to do in their life and all that. Some do not know yet, and some do. I enjoy that part of what I do down there.”

Bonnie has made a fantastic reputation for herself within EAA. Looking back, she could not imagine it any other way. Bonnie greatly appreciates all the volunteers and notices that EAA AirVenture is only possible with them. She has a tremendous amount of respect for them and actively wants to make them feel cared for and appreciated.

“I think the people make it. I mean, the volunteers are absolutely amazing. We have luncheons on the grounds,” Bonnie said. “In fact, we got the volunteer kitchen area for the July 4th weekend. That is where we bond with each other out here in the park as well. We do a lot of dinners. We have a deck that’s by our camper here. We have a lot of evenings where people come and join each other. My husband and I both help each other and help these people. That if they need anything, that is part of our responsibilities. [That] is the way we look at it.”

UAS4STEM Championship at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023

THE UAS4STEM COMPETITION for high school students is back for the third year at EAA AirVenture

Oshkosh 2023. The Academy of Model Aeronautics event is for groups of students, from age 11 to graduating high school seniors, who build an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) and compete against other teams to complete a specific mission through different obstacles. This year’s competition features two divisions, Beginner and Advanced.

“As the competition has evolved, we want to continue to challenge the competitors who return year after year,” said Kyle Jaracz, AMA’s education director. “The Advanced Division will have teams build on skills from last year’s competition.”

Teams competing in the Beginner class will focus on the fundamentals of drone programming and flying, while Advanced teams will be tasked with developing a mechanism to pick up and transport items to different locations.

A spotter’s guide to the EAA Aviation Museum aircraft around the grounds

EVERY YEAR, MORE THAN 10,000 aircraft fly to Wisconsin for AirVenture. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes

— vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds. But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Each day, we’ll

highlight one of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.

Aircraft: Pereira Osprey 2

Designed by George Pereira, the Osprey 2 is a two-seat homebuilt amphibian built from plans. Pereira based the design on the Osprey 1 flying boat, adding a second seat and landing gear. Hundreds of Osprey 2s have been built and flown. The EAA Aviation Museum’s example is the original prototype that first flew in 1973.

Aircraft of the Vietnam War

THIS YEAR AT EAA AIRVENTURE Oshkosh 2023, we’re commemorating the 50th anniversary of the official end of U.S. military involvement in Vietnam — honoring the remarkable aircraft of the era, the nearly 60,000 American troops who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war, and the thousands of Vietnam veterans who served their country valiantly in Southeast Asia. We’re expecting to have a strong presence of Vietnam War-era aircraft at AirVenture Oshkosh this summer to honor those who fought in the jungles of

Vietnam half a century ago. While many of the mostfamous aircraft from Vietnam have only one or two flying examples left (if any at all), we anticipate a number of the following aircraft, either still serving on active duty or in private hands as warbirds, will potentially make an appearance at AirVenture. Note: Not all of these aircraft will attend Oshkosh this year, nor at the time of this writing do we know definitively which ones will be attending, so keep your eyes open as you wander the grounds.

CESSNA A/T-37

THE CESSNA T-37 TWEET is a 1950s jet trainer that was also adapted to serve in a light attack role during Vietnam as the A-37 Dragonfly. Although the aircraft is retired by the U.S. Air Force, it is still used by Ecuador and Pakistan.

BOEING VERTOL CH-47 CHINOOK

OPERATED PRIMARILY BY the U.S. Army, the tandem rotor Chinook was introduced in 1962 and is still very much in use as a heavy-lift helicopter. During Vietnam, the CH-47 was used as a medium-transport helicopter and for delivering artillery batteries to mountainous terrain inaccessible by other means.

SIKORSKY CH-53 SEA STALLION/SUPER STALLION

INTRODUCED SHORTLY AFTER the outbreak of the war, the massive CH-53 was used by the U.S. Marine Corps for recovering downed aircraft and evacuating personnel. Its Air Force counterpart, the HH-53, was used for similar purposes. While the USMC retired the Sea Stallion in 2012, its successors — the Super Stallion, Sea Dragon, and King Stallion — are important pieces in the Marine Corps’ helicopter arsenal.

BELL UH-1 IROQUOIS (HUEY)

ARGUABLY THE AIRCRAFT associated with the Vietnam War, the Huey was introduced in the mid-1950s and served in almost any capacity imaginable during the war, including general support, air assault, cargo transport, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, electronic warfare, and ground attack purposes. More than 16,000 Hueys were built over a production run of 30 years, with the U.S. Army finally retiring the icon in 2016.

LOW AND SLOW AROUND THE LOWER 48

WHILE EAA AIRVENTURE Oshkosh is typically a week filled with flying for many of us, it’s become a welcomed intermission from air travel for the almost 80-year-old Arty Trost, EAA 485367, as she circumnavigates the continental United States in her Aeroprakt A-22 light-sport aircraft.

Arty departed from her home of Sandy, Oregon, on June 13 and started her way south through California. Longtime friend and pilot Dennis Long, EAA 1020229, has been joining her at each stop of the way in his own Aeroprakt. While Dennis prefers a quicker pace, Arty cruises at an average of 70 mph, and she has logged 107 hours over the course of a month before arriving in Oshkosh. With having much of the trip behind them, Arty remarked that her favorite stops were Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Arty fell in love with flying ultralights in her mid-40s when a friend introduced her to the world of flight in 1989. Now, after more than 30 years of flying, she is no stranger to crosscountry trips; in 2009, she completed a seven-week round trip to SUN ’n FUN in her Maxair Drifter, as well as a round trip to AirVenture Oshkosh 2011 in her

Sport Flight Talon. Arty noted, “I’m going to be 80 in December, and I don’t think I would physically be able to fly completely open cockpit this far again,” and so comes the Aeroprakt, which she purchased two years ago. Arty reminisced, “When I decided to upgrade, I called Dennis to find out what he knew about the plane … and I kept asking him, ‘How slowly will I be able to fly?’… It still flies a little faster than I am used to.”

“Right now, I’m so tired of flying. It’s so great to be here on the ground … and I know by the time the whole convention’s over, I’ll be just itching to get back in the air.”

Landing in Oshkosh on July 15, she decided to volunteer in the Fun Fly Zone as she waited for AirVenture to arrive. Arty joked, “Right now, I’m so tired of flying. It’s so great to be here on the ground … and I know by the time the whole convention’s over, I’ll be just itching to get back in the air.” She will be completing her trip around the United States after AirVenture and expects it will take another week to get home. DECADES AGO, EAA founder Paul Poberezny said, “Aviation seeds must be transplanted to future generations if we are to see our rich heritage passed on for others to see, to feel, to touch, to fly.” Paul inherently understood the vital importance of directly sharing aviation with youths as the mechanism to protect and grow the future of aviation and aerospace.

This week, EAA celebrates the conclusion of the 30th anniversary of the Young Eagles program having flown nearly 2.5 million youths, giving them a hands-on experience in a general aviation aircraft with the intent of inspiring them to consider the enjoyment and the rewards of flight. Clearly seeing a critical and growing talent shortage in the aviation and aerospace industries back in 2018, the senior leadership team of EAA began talking about how EAA could expand opportunities for youths to learn more about aviation. Initially code-named “Young Eagles 2.0,” their planning resulted in a new program called AeroEducate.

Announced with fanfare at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, and then following a year of beta testing and refinement, AeroEducate was officially launched at AirVenture 2022. What is AeroEducate? It’s hard to describe in a single sentence as it is a robust, expansive, multifaceted resource.

KERRY AND GLENDA Mills and their daughter Julia from Cushing, Oklahoma, first attended EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in 2019. They next attended in 2022, and this is their third year — all thanks to Julia’s flight instructor, Hal Keck. Hal encouraged Julia and her parents to attend AirVenture after she earned her private pilot certificate. Although the weather wasn’t the greatest in 2019, they said that didn’t break the enjoyable time

they had together. From then on, they were determined to visit AirVenture as often as they could. This year they are all volunteering for security on the grounds because they love meeting all of the people who attend, and they also enjoy helping to keep the event a safe, familyoriented place for everyone to attend. For Kerry, visiting Warbird Alley and seeing the warbirds in flight makes AirVenture worth the year-round wait!

Scott Evans from Maine is attending his second AirVenture this year. At home he flies Van’s RV-12s and is looking to buy one soon. During the week of

AirVenture, Scott likes to watch the experimental light-sport aircraft in the Ultralights area, with his favorite airplane there being the BushCat. When he’s not on the grounds, Scott enjoys sitting at his campsite and taking in the energy of Camp Scholler.

A Father and Son Duo

Nearly three decades of AirVenture together

BARRY JAY AND his father, Dr. Erwin Jay, have looked forward to the summer for the past 29 years for one reason: AirVenture.

Barry and Erwin are coming up on their 29th year attending EAA AirVenture Oshkosh as a father and son duo. As a child, Barry saw how much his father admired aviation. Erwin knew he always wanted to be involved with aviation, but instead of getting his certificate and ratings, he decided family was his priority. To meet the thirst for aviation, Barry and his father got into building model

airplanes and then flew them together at a little radio-controlled field.

Barry went to Ohio State University, took ground school, and then later transferred to Cal State. He discovered the world of hang gliding and got involved in that industry after college. Around this time, Erwin finally decided to attain his pilot certificate. He also got his instrument rating and bought an A36 Bonanza. He decided to travel to AirVenture in 1976, and Barry finally agreed to join in 1994; since then, the father-son duo has made it a point to attend every year.

“After that first year, I said, ‘You know, that was a lot of fun. How about next year?’ Each year I ask him the same question, and I get the same answer,” Barry said. “I said, ‘You know, as long as you’re ready and willing and

able to go, I’ll go, too.’ From that shared passion for aviation, we’ve had a wonderful time with each successive visit.”

In the early years of attending AirVenture together, Barry was a part of the Toyota Aviation Business Development Office and attended the fly-in convention for work. While this was happening, Erwin was also involved with aviation as a career. He is a doctor of optometry and is still in practice. He did some work for the Federal Aviation Administration and assisted many pilots in their vision test while renewing their medical certificates.

Aviation has played a significant role in both of their lives. Being able to share a similar passion and interact with the aviation world on a large scale is something they both hold close to them. They also see the creativity that comes with this event and the cuttingedge technology in all walks of life in aviation. Being a father and seeing his son grow, Erwin could not be more

grateful and happy that he gets to share this one event every year with his son.

“I think I’m the most proud papa in the world because a lot of my friends who have children seldom communicate with their children. We do it at least once a year, father and son. We’re together seven days, eight days. It’s amazing.”

Not only do Barry and Erwin appreciate the father-son connection this event brings them, but also they think of AirVenture as their home away from home. Their shared passion for aviation has brought them a second family. It makes them feel close to the people they see only once or twice a year. Despite being away for so long, that shared passion is what drives them to have an environment to get reconnected.

“It’s a combination of we know what to expect, in terms of what aircraft are going to be where and all of that. It’s also the anticipation of seeing something new,” Barry said. “It’s like coming home; it’s almost a second home after all these years.”

“It’s like a family reunion. When you have a love of aviation, and you share it, you have so many things that you want to share,” Erwin said. “It’s a whole lot of love. When you’re with people that you love or have a common interest of any kind, you just get together to just have more fun.”

Vietnam veteran Col. Ellis speaks on POW, leadership lessons

AMONG THE HIGHLIGHTS of EAA AirVenture

Oshkosh 2023 is a tribute to the veterans and aircraft of the Vietnam War. EAA’s Rick Larsen, vice president of communities and member programs, noted, “This is an opportunity to recognize those that served, many of whom did not receive a grateful welcome when they returned from their service.” Among those veterans who sacrificed so much were American prisoners of war, who, true to their motto, returned with honor.

Flying his 68th combat mission on November 7, 1967, Air Force Capt. Lee Ellis was shot down over North Vietnam. In his book, Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton, he described the experience: “Captain Ken Fisher and I rolled into a dive-bomb pass in our F-4C Phantom jet … Tracers from the North Vietnamese antiaircraft artillery fire flashed by our canopy like giant Roman candles … We released our heavy payload of bombs, and suddenly an explosion rocked our aircraft … Now on fire and out of control, there was only one option: eject.”

Ellis was taken prisoner and began a tortuous journey through five-and-a-half years of captivity, ultimately being held in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.”

early 1973. In March 1973, Lee Ellis came home.

After his return to flying status and following assignments of increasing responsibility, in 1980 Ellis took command of the 560th Flying Training Squadron at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. The squadron was, and remains, the “schoolhouse” where Air Force pilots learn the art and science of instructing in the supersonic T-38. This was not his first stop at the 560th. From May 1973 to November 1976 the squadron was tasked with requalifying more than 150 pilots, all former POWs. Once medically returned to flying status, a T-38 “freedom flight” was their first step back to the skies.

They were given the call sign “Freedom” and a number reflecting their order of flight. In August 1973, Lee Ellis was “Freedom 34.”

Following his assignment at the 560th, Ellis moved up through increasing positions of leadership and retired as a colonel on February 1, 1990. His decorations include the Silver Star with one oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with “V” device, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, and the Prisoner of War Medal.
