Aviation’s greatest celebration just keeps getting better Let’s see…July…Wisconsin…the Experimental Aircraft Association…Oshkosh. For the 60th year, the faithful of all aviation stripes turn their eyes, if not their physical presence, the annual gathering called EAA AirVenture. And AirVenture 2012 continues many traditions started that first year, 1953, when Paul Poberezny, with a group of his friends and fellow pilots, staged a small gathering for their then-fledgling EAA in Milwaukee. In the six decades since, AirVenture has seen spaceships and global fliers of many types, acres of vintage and golden age aircraft, veterans—both aircraft and human— of multiple combat zones, builders and fliers of some of the world’s most advanced experimental aircraft, and millions of visitors, many arriving via the hundreds of thousands of private aircraft that have tied down at the EAA event. For 2012, EAA is assembling perhaps its most diverse and exciting collection of airplanes, people, and events ever.

Remembering America’s finest Veterans of World War II form one of AirVenture’s core groups again this year, with representatives of the Tuskegee Airmen on hand—and a feature-length film depiction of their combat experiences— alongside the commemoration of America’s first offensive against Japan by thenLt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle’s Raiders in 1942. The only flying example of the airplane that ended World War II is also present at AirVenture this week: FIFI, the Commemorative Air Force’s Boeing B-29. And this year’s show is filled with numerous other commemorations of the greatest generation, plus emphatic nods to the veterans of air combat action in the skies above Korea and Vietnam.

A laboratory for aviation technology AirVenture also is the world’s greatest shopping opportunity for pilots and aircraft owners hoping to find the latest and greatest products that’ll help make their flying more enjoyable. Over the decades, AirVenture has showcased many advances in aviation, and this year’s EAA gathering offers glimpses into the future as well as looks back to the development of some of today’s most-heralded, most-used devices. For example, Rockwell Collins is highlighting its role in helping develop the global positioning system, that satellitebased area-navigation wonder by which thousands of AirVenture-bound pilots navigated to Oshkosh. Advances in one of aviation’s newest technological tools—automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast, known simply as ADS-B—also are in the spotlight at AirVenture. The backbone of the Federal Aviation Administration’s ambitious Next Generation Air Transportation Control System, NextGen, totally new ADS-B products will be on prominent display, with hands-on demonstrations, thanks to the efforts of several AirVenture exhibitors. AirVenture is also highlighting advances in robotics, thanks to the return of Honda’s humanoid automaton, ASIMO. And as in the past, AirVenture will also shine a spotlight on other tools for the pilot, from headsets to programs and applications for tablet computers, smartphones, and on to panel-mounted gear for both certificated and experimental aircraft.

day’s most-advanced aircraft, both for the homebuilder and the ready-to-fly buyer. The fledgling experimental-aircraft movement of 1953 helped launch EAA, and today no other venue offers builders and would-be builders the same quality of access to finished kit airplane examples. There simply will be a staggering variety of airframes meeting an equally large number of mission profiles. Maybe it’s a simple piston single for recreational aviating that strikes your fancy. Maybe a speedy turboprop capable of shrinking a continental flight down to a few hours of air time. It’s probably something in between; maybe an amphibious LSA or a sexy new all-composite kit. Regardless, if it can be built by the individual, it’s probably here at AirVenture. But AirVenture is equally enmeshed in the world of factory-made, FAA-certified aircraft. Thanks to the efforts of planemakers, the AirVenture audience can get up close and personal with aircraft designs of all types, whether powered by avgas, diesel, or Jet-A fuels, plus the ever-growing field of electric-powered aircraft. Whether the mission is hauling supplies deep into the bush or hauling the family to the grandparents, it’s probably here at AirVenture.

World-class entertainment—in the air, on stage, and on the silver screen Perhaps the most-known aspect among those who’ve never attended the EAA gathering is the daily air show. Again for 2012, AirVenture has drawn world-class sky talent. The list of performers appearing through the week reads like a who’s who of airborne entertainers, and the lineup varies day-by-day. So if you don’t see your favorite tomorrow, check back; that aerobat is likely

on the list for later in the week. And later in the week is when EAA AirVenture continues the aerial excitement with a world-class night show, complete with fiery flying and a top-of-the-mark fireworks display. After the daily air show, the nightly programs at the Theater in the Woods bring together a series of events promising standing-room-only attendance. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite for evening events, check out the films at the Fly-In Theater every evening through Saturday—each preceded by a celebrity introducer setting the scene for the feature to follow. Of course, music is also a significant element of AirVenture, with the openingevening concert by the Steve Miller Band and many other musical events ranging from flying musicians to nationally known bands. When you come to EAA AirVenture you can count on leaving well-informed, craving some of aviation’s newest products and exhausted by the expansive experience. Many of the world’s top air show performers will be here this week for the 60th annual EAA AirVenture fly-in. AirVenture’s daily air show is presented by Rockwell Collins. Acts such as Chuck Aaron’s Red Bull aerobatic helicopter, the AeroShell Aerobatic Team, Matt Younkin and his Twin Beech, Bob Carlton and the Jet Sailplane, and the Warbirds Extravaganzas (including expanded shows on Friday and Satur-

day featuring pyrotechnics and the AirVenture debut of Pearl Harbor re-enactment group Tora! Tora! Tora!) will provide daily thrills for AirVenture attendees. Also scheduled are Sean D. Tucker, Challenger II; Gene Soucy, Showcat; and Mike Goulian, Extra. Greg Koontz and the Alabama Boys will help celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Piper Cub, as will the return of Kyle Franklin flying his PA-18 Super Cub comedy routine.

Canadian SkyHawks parachute team to make AirVenture debut The Canadian SkyHawks parachute team, the official sky-diving team of the Canadian Forces, is in Oshkosh for the first time this week. The SkyHawks feature a variety of unique aerial maneuvers, formations, and other feats beneath their unique Canadian flag parachute canopies. The team will perform during the air shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 27-29. EAA’s daily air shows are presented by Rockwell Collins. “The SkyHawks are among the world’s best parachute teams, and we’re sure AirVenture attendees will see a dazzling show from them,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA’s vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. “Their performances will make the Oshkosh air show, already regarded as the all-star week for air show performers, even better.” Now in their 41st season, the SkyHawks will perform before millions of people this year at shows in North America, Brazil, and Belgium. The unit has evolved from the initial unofficial team of sport parachute members of the Canadian Airborne Regiment in 1969 to today’s highly trained unit that is part of the Canadian Forces’ Centre of Excellence for Land Advanced Warfare. Witness ‘field of yellow’ as AirVenture celebrates Cub’s 75th Hundreds of Piper Cubs will turn the AirVenture flightline into a “field of yellow” this week. Cub owners will arrive from all over this week to participate. Mosey on down to the Vintage parking area where a special aircraft parking section has been set up along the flightline. A mass gathering was organized by Cubs 2 Oshkosh at Hartford Municipal Airport (HXF), just 60 miles southwest of Oshkosh, and 75 of them were scheduled to arrive in trail early this morning in a group arrival, with more coming throughout the morning. “When talking about iconic aircraft that pioneered the GA movement, you need to look no further than the distinctive Piper Cub,” said Rod Hightower, EAA president/ CEO. “Like many other aircraft types, Cub owners are a community-oriented group that is synonymous with EAA’s culture.” Other Cub events for AirVenture 2012: • VAA/Cubs 2 Oshkosh Picnic Wednesday, July 25, 5-8 p.m., at the Nature Center (advance ticket purchase is required at VAA Red Barn Headquarters) • Cub Fly-Out, Saturday, July 28, 7 a.m.12 p.m., a group of Cubs plans a fly-out to Shawano, Wisconsin.

A significant homebuilt aircraft design turns 50 this year, and EAA will celebrate the occasion at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012. Although on a smaller scale than other prominent aircraft milestones (because there simply aren’t many out there), the Dyke Delta JD-2, designed by John Dyke, was an important, ahead-of-its-time design. In 1962, Dyke designed the airplane, which has a true, distinctive doubledelta design with folding wings, made with 4130 tubing and covered with fabric. The one-plus-three flight deck design is one of the airplane’s unique elements, giving the pilot ample room up front with a bench seat across the back. The FAA database shows 35 JD-2s registered, and around 15-20 more registered as something other than a JD-2. A fast (180-mph) cruiser with retractable landing gear, the Delta always stands out wherever it flies, or lands. Visit the Homebuilders Hangar on Wednesday, July 25, and you can see for yourself the innovative Delta design as two different airplanes will be featured in the hangar throughout the day. Alan White of Superior, Wisconsin, will have his beautiful white and blue Delta on display in the morning, while Dave Williams will have his resurrected yellow and black Delta (N18DW) on display in the afternoon. At noon on Wednesday, EAA will present John Dyke with a 50th anniversary plaque in honor of his contribution to the homebuilder community. AVT

Dinner Wednesday for Dyke Delta’s 50th In honor of the Dyke Delta JD-2’s 50th anniversary celebration this year, the family of aircraft designer John Dyke has arranged a celebratory dinner at the Roxy Supper Club in downtown Oshkosh on Wednesday, July 25. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. and is open to anyone interested in honoring this aircraft and its creator.

Make way for the Flabob Express The Flabob Express DC-3, the signature aircraft of Flabob Airport in Riverside, California, will serve as the centerpiece for the Thomas W. Wathen Foundation’s participation at AirVenture this year. That participation includes up to 15 students from the Wathen Foundation’s charter middle and high school aviation academy and programs; students will serve as docents for aircraft tours and make presentations about EAA youth programs and what the programs have done for them. Organizers are also bringing two or three airplanes built and flown by the students. Along with plane-side presentations about EAA and Flabob programs, the students can also get involved with KidVenture and interact with the EAA Air Academy campers throughout the week.

A regal history The Flabob Express first appeared at AirVenture 2010 for the 75th anniversary of the DC-3/C-47, and also returned last year. Its markings and amenities are of a 1940s Douglas DC-3 airliner; however, the aircraft’s original configuration was a military C-47. Built in 1943 in Long Beach, California,

the airplane was once an RAF transport with wartime service. According to the plane’s website, this very airplane transported Winston Churchill and members of the royal family in 1943 during its initial tour of duty. After ownership changed hands several times in India, Pakistan, and Canada, the airplane made it to the United States and was registered as N103NA. It was nicknamed Classic Express: Wings of Time by the DC-3 Aviation Museum, which Flabob

modified to Flabob Express: Wings of Time. Riverside native Jerry Bartow, prominent aircraft collector and philanthropist, acquired the airplane in 2001. It was significantly damaged in a windstorm that, according to current chief pilot Jon Goldenbaum, blew the aircraft some 300 yards. Bartow donated it to a newly formed nonprofit organization, the Flabob Aviation Association (the “other” FAA), a group of pilots, mechanics, and IAs located at Flabob Airport. They repaired and today

maintain Flabob Express, which is used throughout the year as a hands-on laboratory for Flabob’s and EAA’s youth education programs. In addition to the youth education initiatives, Flabob is also developing career programs for students and returning veterans such as one-year FAA-certified A&P certificate and 120-hour light aircraft mechanic programs. FIFI offers flights at AirVenture for first time The Commemorative Air Force’s iconic Boeing B-29 bomber FIFI, the world’s only remaining flying example of the aircraft, is offering flights in the aircraft for the first time ever at AirVenture. Flights will be based at Outagamie County Regional Airport in Appleton—just 20 miles north of Oshkosh—and are available July 22-29. A unique flight in FIFI will be part of a special, once-in-a-lifetime “bucket list” package to be auctioned during EAA’s annual Gathering of Eagles fundraiser on Thursday evening. The winning bidders will fly in the B-29 on Friday, July 27, with Dutch Van Kirk, the B-29 Enola Gay navigator who flew the first atomic bomb mission over Japan in 1945. Homebuilts area encourages creativity, builders of all ages The AirVenture 2012 Homebuilts area welcomes aircraft made with ingenuity, and provides learning opportunities to inspire aviation enthusiasts of all ages to begin their very own projects. Scott Ehni’s scratchbuilt, turbine-powered Zenith 701 aircraft is powered by a modified JFS100-13 engine, which was originally used as a starter engine for an A-7 Corsair. The only thing not homebuilt on this aircraft is the tires. The hand-blown windshield and door glass, 40-gallon wet wing tanks, and flushriveted construction on this modified Zenith were all techniques used to help streamline the plane and reduce the required fuel flow at cruise speed. Ehni and his building team did all paint, upholstery, and testing in-house. Also among the homebuilt aircraft attractions is Steve Wightman’s Super Sea-

wind, a modified version of the SNA Inc. Seawind kit plane, which is a four-seat, amphibious aircraft featuring a single tailmounted engine. This Super Seawind is a technically advanced composite airplane with a G900X, GRT EFIS, and Sorcerer autopilot, and is

powered by an overhauled PT6A-20 turboprop engine with only 48 hours of operation. Visitors can take in the distinctive sights and sounds of this one-of-a-kind Seawind on July 26 and 27. Along with these unique aircraft visitors, this year’s Homebuilts area is celebrating the 50th anniversaries of the Dyke Delta JD-2 and Bowers Fly Baby, a single-seat, open-flight deck aircraft originally created in 1960 for the first EAA design contest. Throughout this week, the Homebuilders Hangar, presented by Aircraft Spruce & Specialty, will house a group of teens working together to build a Zenith 750. Live sessions of Hints for Homebuilders will also be featured in the hangar all week. Every day from 11:30 a.m. 12:45 p.m., Aircraft Spruce will host forums about aircraft design and building, and even high-

light some of the 2012 convention’s most celebrated aircraft. Those looking for a bite to eat on Wednesday can visit the southwest corner of the homebuilt camping area for a corn roast from 4-6 p.m. Once again this year, all homebuilders who bring their planes to AirVenture and register in the Homebuilts area will receive a commemorative patch in celebration of their hard work and contributions to aviation. The annual Homebuilders Dinner is Thursday, July 26, at the Nature Center. Tickets for the dinner are available at Homebuilders Headquarters on the EAA grounds. Monday through Saturday, Homebuilts in Review offers twice-daily (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) presentations about noteworthy homebuilts. AVT

More than anything, attendees get a unique opportunity to engage with others in the homebuilding community. Wednesday’s presentations will be dedicated to a pair of Dyke Deltas in commemoration of the design’s 50th anniversary at AirVenture 2012. GAMA and IMC Club bring seminars The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) and the IMC Club will conduct three seminars on instrument flying proficiency this week. The three forums will be held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the EAA Welcome Center. Each seminar will be introduced by either National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member Earl Weener or member Mark Rosekind. The IMC Club is a relatively new organization intended to bring instrumentrated pilots, and those who want to earn the IFR rating, together regularly for “hangar flying” sessions to share experiences. More than half of all active pilots have an instrument rating, but only a minority of rated pilots routinely fly IFR.

“We look forward to bringing pilots, controllers, the NTSB, regulators, and aviation enthusiasts together to discuss these important safety topics.” These AirVenture seminars will be patterned on a typical IMC Club hangar flying meeting. What won’t be typical is that experts from the NTSB will join in to discuss crucial safety aspects of GA safety. IMC, of course, stands for instrument meteorological conditions, which are clouds or other obscurations that prevent you from seeing the horizon, and only the instruments can show you the attitude and flight path of the airplane. IFR stands for instrument flight rules, and flying IFR simply means that you are flying in the system with an IFR clearance that assigns you an altitude, course, and so on. Only a very small part of IFR flying is in actual IMC, but flying IMC is the hard part— what the IMC Club hopes to help pilots understand. The IMC Club is forming chapters across the country where pilots can meet monthly. “We are pleased to partner with the IMC Club on these forums at AirVenture,” said GAMA President/CEO Pete Bunce.

Glacier Girl to celebrate 20th anniversary of recovery The Lockheed P-38 Glacier Girl, the fearsome twin-boom fighter that has become one of the world’s most wellknown warbirds since its rescue from the Greenland ice cap in 1992, is in Oshkosh this week marking the 20th anniversary of its first public appearance. The aircraft, which began flying again in 2002, underwent a 10-year restoration. Greenland Expedition Society members Pat Epps, Don Brooks, and others brought the P-38’s salvaged parts directly from the ice cap to the 1992 EAA fly-in convention in a DC-3. The display became a sensation among aviation enthusiasts and the national media following the unprecedented effort to extract the aircraft after 50 years below the ice. “Glacier Girl is a draw everywhere it goes not only because flying P-38s are so rare, but the human challenge to its recovery that made this restoration stand above so many others,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA’s vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. “Twenty years ago, the mere appearance of the rescued parts caused a huge stir at Oshkosh. The pride at seeing the airplane fly at Oshkosh is not diminished two decades later.” The project began in 1981 when Epps and Richard Taylor organized the initial Greenland Expedition Society. It finally gained success 11 years later, when the late Roy Shoffner was a major contribu-

The recovery included digging through 268 feet of ice and pulling the airplane piece by piece to the surface, reclaiming the only survivor of the six P-38s and two B-17s abandoned during a 1942 trans-Atlantic ferry flight. The airplane finally flew again in October 2002 and has been at Oshkosh on

a regular basis since 2003. It is now the crown jewel of the Lewis Air Legends collection based in San Antonio, Texas, owned by aviation enthusiast Rod Lewis. Glacier Girl is regarded as one of the finest warbird restorations flying anywhere in the world. Bob Cardin, who was the project

manager during the 1992 rescue effort and later directed the airplane restoration, will describe the challenges and triumphs for the Greenland Expedition Society during presentations throughout this week. The airplane will also be featured Monday in the 1 p.m. Warbirds in Review presentation. AVT

Garmin displays lower-cost ADS-B options, features ADS-B Academy BY J. MAC McCLELLAN

Garmin is demonstrating the GDL 39 portable ADS-B “in” receiver and the GDL 88 installed system it announced last week. The new system meets the rules for ADS-B “out” and also delivers full “in” capability, including subscription-free weather and display of traffic. The GDL 39 is a small batterypowered unit that receives the free weather and other flight information being broadcast over the network of ADS-B ground stations the FAA is installing across the country. The GDL 39 uses Bluetooth to wirelessly connect to an iPad or to Garmin’s aera portable aviation tablet. It can also be wired to some Garmin installed displays. The price is $799. In addition to receiving the flight information service-broadcast (FIS-B), the GDL 39 can also show ADS-B traffic in some situations. The GDL 88 is a complete ADS-B solution priced at $3,995. The system has a unique way to capture the code set in your standard transponder and send that code out over ADS-B. That is a critical requirement, because starting in January 2020 all aircraft will need certified ADS-B “out” and a Mode C transponder to fly in regulated airspace. But the rules require that you set the four-digit transponder code in only a single location. The GDL 88 resolves that problem by “listening” to the code you selected in your conventional transponder and broadcasting that same code over ADS-B “out.” To meet the rules the GDL 88 must receive position data from a GNS or GTN WAAS-capable GPS navigator. Garmin is offering a no-cost software

upgrade to bring the WAAS navigators into ADS-B compliance. If you don’t have a WAAS-capable navigator installed, the GDL 88 is available with an internal GPS sensor that meets the ADS-B rules, and the price for that system is $5,495. Garmin engineers have invented a new way to display traffic position and possible conflicts using data from the GDL 88. Part of an ADS-B “in” display of traffic is a “stinger” line that shows where the airplane is going. Pilots can select the length of the stinger arrow to represent 30 or 60 seconds, or two minutes of projected track of the target. In other ADS-B systems the stinger line simply represents the other aircraft’s path over the ground. But with the new TargetTrend system in the GDL 88, the stinger points to possible traffic conflicts with your track, and the stinger points toward the point of nearest passage with the other aircraft. For example, on a conventional ADS-B display if you were catching a slower airplane ahead of you at your altitude, the stinger of that traffic target ahead would point forward in the direction that airplane is moving. But TargetTrend logic would calculate that you are converging on the slower airplane ahead and would point its stinger track back at you because you are coming into conflict. TargetTrend logic is very useful when you are converging with other traffic targets at shallow angles. It can be difficult to visualize whether your tracks will merge, and how soon, but the TargetTrend stingers will point to the exact spot where you will come closest, or possibly hit, without a change in course. If you have a GTX 330 transponder, or the GTX 33 that is part of G1000 installa-

tions, you can meet the ADS-B “out” rule by upgrading the transponder to “extended squitter” for $1,200. If you have a WAAS GPS navigator installed, that’s all you would need to meet the requirement. ADS-B “in” remains optional. The whole ADS-B rule and options are so complex that Garmin has created the ADS-B Academy and will be holding seminars Monday through Saturday at AirVenture in its seminar tent located outside Hangar D. At 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. the focus is installed solutions. At 1 p.m., learn about portable solutions. You can also study at the Academy at www.Garmin.com/ADS-B. EAA founder to host test-flight symposiums T

his week EAA Founder Paul Poberezny will host a pair of test-flight symposiums with special guest speakers Charlie Precourt and Terry Lutz. They’ll be in Forum Building 5 at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, and the EAA Welcome Center at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26. Precourt was recently selected for the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and after a long career with NASA and the Air Force, he is retiring as a colonel. Lutz is a test pilot for Airbus and flew the A380 to AirVenture in 2009. He also built and flies a Van’s RV-8. Both are experienced test pilots. Everyone is invited to take part in a symposium for a great educational lesson in flight-testing experimental airplanes. Charlie Precourt

E-volo VC2 to make world debut this week German company e-volo will make the world debut of its VC2 Volocopter this week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2012. VC2 is the successor of the 16-motor VC1, which achieved the first manned flight with a purely electric-powered VTOL aircraft on October 21, 2011. AirVenture visitors can see the VC2 rotorcraft in the Innovations Hangar South. Like the VC1, the VC2 is made of aluminum but is much stronger and lighter, according to e-volo. It’s powered by 18 electric motors, each turning two-blade propellers, mounted to an aluminum framework with three inflatable balls serving as the landing gear. E-volo also announced a rigorous flight-test program to start in September. “We will extensively test all the developments in the field of safety techniques, electric motors, steering controls, and BMU (battery management unit),” the company stated. The technology features several separate and mutually monitoring onboard computers controlling the precise rotation speed of each motor for attitude and directional control. The custom, German-made electric motors produce 2 kilowatts each. Honor Flight will fly veterans from AirVenture to Washington, D.C. EAA, American Airlines, and Old Glory Honor Flight Inc. have again joined forces to give World War II veterans the opportunity to visit the powerful memorials dedicated in their honor with an Old Glory Honor Flight departing from AirVenture this Friday, July 27. The Old Glory Honor Flight is just one of the many special activities for EAA’s Salute to Veterans Day, presented by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, on Friday. On that morning, a special American Airlines yellow-ribbon 737 aircraft Flagship Liberty will fly approximately 80 WWII veterans from the AirVenture grounds to Washington, D.C. After a reception greeting them at Reagan National Airport, the veterans will be taken on a daylong tour of memorials honoring the sacrifices they made preserving freedom, including the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. “All of us at American Airlines are excited to be a part of this year’s EAA AirVenture, and especially to have the opportunity to fly some of our nation’s greatest treasures—World War II veterans—to see their memorial in Washington, D.C.,” said Capt. Jim Palmersheim, American Airlines director of veterans military programs. “American has a long history of supporting our troops, veterans, and their families. It

Future aviators inspired at KidVenture One of the missions EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower sees for EAA is creating the next generation of aviators. That objective is a central theme of KidVenture, where young people can get hands-on experience in building, piloting, and other aviation-related skills. KidVenture, sponsored by United Technologies (UTC), is in its 14th year at AirVenture Oshkosh this year. It’s located on Pioneer Airport directly across from the EAA AirVenture Museum. KidVenture is the place where young people can explore aviation from several different fronts. Comment on EAA/AOPA medical certification exemption at EAA Welcome Center EAA wants to help aviators submit their comments to the FAA to take advantage of the agency’s 70-day extension of the public comment period for the EAA/AOPA third-class medical certification exemption request. The comment period now runs through September 14, and AirVenture is a great place for pilots to add to the 14,700-plus comments already submitted. You can fill out an online response form and submit it the Welcome Center’s Internet café or complete a form by hand, which EAA will fax to the FAA. The voluminous comments already submitted show overwhelming interest and support for the proposed change, which would allow an estimated 39,000 pilots to fly recreationally as many as 114,000 popular single-engine aircraft by completing an online medical awareness course, carrying a valid state driver’s license, and observing certain operating limitations. Rockwell Collins Night Air Show returns to provide an AirVenture ‘skylight’ “Skylights” will fill the night air over Oshkosh when the Rockwell Collins Night Air Show returns on Saturday, July 28. Since debuting in 2010, this event has become the marquee attraction of Super Saturday on AirVenture’s final evening. It’s scheduled to begin at approximately 8:30 p.m., with fireworks and the Wall of Fire to follow. The Rockwell Collins Night Air Show is a oneof-a-kind, signature event, bringing tens of thousands of people to the flightline to see some of the world’s best aerobatic artists performing in sync with pyrotechnics and music. Crowd favorites like the AeroShell Aerobatic Team (four T-6s), Bob Carlton ( jet sailplane), and Gene Soucy (Showcat) are scheduled to return in 2012, and they will be joined by two new all-star additions to the lineup: Bill Leff (T-6) and Wicked Willy ( jet dragster). “The Rockwell Collins Night Air Show is without a doubt one of the most talked about attractions of the AirVenture week,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. “This will be the perfect way to celebrate the final evening of AirVenture 2012 and cap off what we expect to be a memorable week.” Carnival-style food and beverages will be available for purchase on Phillips 66 Plaza, adding to the festive atmosphere. Note: Special vehicle traffic pattern in effect Oshkosh road traffic during AirVenture can be a challenge, especially during the high-volume hours. In an effort to keep motorists moving toward their intended destinations in a reasonable amount of time, a special traffic pattern will be in place during EAA AirVenture 2012 near the main access point from U.S. Highway 41.

Designated lanes for local and AirVenture traffic will be established to ease congestion and keep motorists moving along in a safe, orderly fashion. Although the U.S. 41 major upgrade project continues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will ensure two lanes of traffic are open in each direction during AirVenture.

The AirVenture traffic loop, encompassing South Park Avenue, 20th Avenue, and Washburn Street, will have special restrictions and police-controlled intersections to accommodate the high volume of traffic during AirVenture.

Attendees traveling from the south as well as all who are camping are urged to use the Wis. 26/Waupun Road exit from U.S. 41 and approach the AirVenture grounds and Camp Scholler from the south.

Additional important items to note for AirVenture attendees as well as Oshkosh residents and businesses: • No AirVenture or U.S. 41 access from South Park Avenue westbound. No through traffic from South Park Avenue westbound at Koeller Street/Knapp Street Road. Left turn to local businesses ONLY from 20th Avenue westbound to South Park Avenue. •No through traffic from Koeller Street to South Park Avenue. Local businesses on Koeller Street may be accessed from 20th Avenue. •Northbound exit ramp from U.S. 41 to South Park Ave-

nue will be closed from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily Monday, July 23, through Friday, July 27, and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. This is in place to expedite the traffic flow leaving AirVenture during these hours. Exit ramps from U.S. 41 to Wis. 26/Waupun Road will remain open during these hours, providing access to the AirVenture grounds from the south via Poberezny Road. •Ramps to and from U.S. 41 at Omro Avenue/Oshkosh Avenue (Wis. 21) will be closed throughout AirVenture due to reconstruction. Ford creates Red Tails Tuskegee Airmen Mustang for Young Eagles Ford Motor Company has built another one-of-a-kind, aviation-themed vehicle for auction to benefit the EAA Young Eagles program. The unique Red Tails Mustang will go to the highest bidder at the Gathering of Eagles Thursday night. The Red Tails Mustang honors the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. It will be on display inside the Ford Hangar, which is saluting “the greatest generation in the air” all week. Ford’s continued generous support for the EAA Young Eagles program has raised more than $1.5 million in recent years, helping inspire and motivate our next generation of leaders, aviators, and innovators. Young Eagles, introduced in July 1992, has flown more than 1.7 million young people at no charge, making it the largest youth aviation education program in history. Modeled after the P-51 Mustangs flown by the Tuskegee Airmen, the Red Tails Mustang features a polished aluminum and silver chrome finish with red and yellow accents. Under the hood, the

Mustang generates more than 600 hp with its 5.0L engine, Ford Racing 2.3L Whipple supercharger, and handling pack. It also has custom Recaro race seats with an embroidered Red Tails logo, unique side exhaust, quad rear exhaust, Forgiato custom wheels, and many other custom features. EAA AirVenture is one of Wisconsin’s unique events that enable the state to attract tourists from around the world, according to the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. “We are reaching out more to international audiences and inviting them to Wisconsin,” said David Fantle, WDT deputy secretary. “There are only a few events in the state that are an immediate draw for international tourism to Wisconsin, and EAA is certainly among them.” AirVenture annually draws visitors from more than 60 nations, and attracts media from five continents. EAA’s annual fly-in also provides a significant amount of Winnebago Coun-

ty’s economic benefit from tourism. The county, of which Oshkosh is the county seat, ranks 10th in Wisconsin tourism spending with $201.7 million spent in 2011. That accounts for 4,600 jobs in the county and $26.7 million in local and state tax revenue each year. University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh studies have put AirVenture’s annual economic benefit to the Oshkosh region at $110 million. More important to Wisconsin, more than 70 percent of all event visitors come from outside the state. Additional events held on the EAA grounds, such as the Wisconsin Public Service Farm Show, supply additional tourism revenue to the Oshkosh area. AVT

Growing demand has brought an increased supply of homebuilt aircraft parking and camping spots for AirVenture 2012, in an area that has become more and more popular since it first opened about a decade ago. More than 75 parking and camping spots for homebuilt aircraft owners and pilots will be added adjacent to the current homebuilt camping area, immediately north of the P-1 taxiway. This new parking area was formed by the annexation of the former Red Lot auto parking area and closure of a secondary admission gate. “Among the ideas we’ve heard from EAA members and homebuilders is to expand the parking and camping areas that are near the Honda Forums Plaza and the homebuilt exhibitors, and give the homebuilders the sense of community we see in other AirVenture aircraft areas,” said Chad Jensen, EAA’s communities manager. “This marks the third time that homebuilt aircraft camping areas have been expanded since they first opened

about a decade ago. It creates more specific homebuilt aircraft parking area than ever at Oshkosh.” Homebuilt aircraft parking continues along the AirVenture flightline all the way to the entrance to the Phillips 66 Plaza showcase ramp. Among other projects in support of homebuilts at AirVenture 2012 is the remodeling of the Homebuilders Hangar building, an expanded Homebuilts in Review presentation series that focuses on a particular type of homebuilt, and the new Innovation Hangars with special displays and presentations that center on the latest innovations in sport aviation. Honda’s ASIMO robot returns to AirVenture Back by popular demand, ASIMO, the world’s most advanced humanoid robot, will once again appear at the AirVenture Honda Aircraft Company exhibit. ASIMO will amaze the audience this week with two daily performances, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday. ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, is capable of independently walking forward, backward, up and down stairs, in straight lines, and on curves. It is the only bipedal humanoid robot in the world capable of running up to 4 mph.

Along with demonstrations of ASIMO’s physical capabilities, HondaJet test pilot Stefan Johansson will conduct chats with pilots Michael Goulian and Sean D. Tucker, and the AeroShell Team will be signing autographs. Visit their exhibit to see the complete schedule. Junkers Ju 52 makes first Oshkosh visit A rare Junkers Ju 52 tri-motor will be a main attraction along the AirVenture flightline as part of the airplane’s North American tour. The airplane’s visit is sponsored by the German-based company RIMOWA, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high-quality luggage and a first-time partner with EAA at Oshkosh. The Junkers Ju 52 was designed by the legendary Hugo Junkers and first appeared in May 1932. Within six years, the model was flying 75 percent of all German

air passenger flights and remained an important part of European aviation for more than three decades. “We are proud to be one of the stops of the RIMOWA Ju 52 tour and know there is no place where the airplane will be more appreciated than in front of the world’s aviators gathered at Oshkosh,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA’s vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. The aircraft was built in 1939 in Dessau, Germany. At that time it was directly transferred to Switzerland, where it has

been used for sightseeing flights since 1982. On April 19, 2012, RIMOWA announced that the airplane would make its first North American tour, including a trans-Atlantic flight that will bring it to select cities in the United States and Canada. “To be part of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh with the RIMOWA Ju 52 is simply fantastic!” said Dieter Morszeck, CEO of RIMOWA and grandson of the company’s

founder. “The stop at the world’s largest aviation gathering in Oshkosh is definitely one of the highlights of our North American tour, and we are really looking forward to it!” See or tour the Ju 52 throughout the week; it will be parked just to the south of AirVenture’s showcase ramp, Phillips 66 Plaza. Flying Musicians’ nightly jams The Flying Musicians Association will again hold nightly FMA AirVenture MusicJams this year. Everyone with a passion for music is invited to this jam session, which runs 7-10 p.m. Monday through Friday at Honda Forums Pavilion No. 9. After kicking off each night with a featured performer, FMA invites the crowd to participate in open-mic performances. By the end of the night, it will turn into an all-out jam session. All instruments are welcome, with a keyboard and bass guitar available for those who want to play them. FMA seeks to combine two passions,

flying and music, encouraging and educating youth and adults in the science and art of aviation and music. Vets invited to participate in parade on Friday All veterans in attendance on Friday, July 27, are encouraged to participate in the annual Parade of Veterans starting at 2 p.m. from Scotts Warbird Alley, where they will be saluted as they march along the flightline. The parade is proudly presented by Oshkosh Corp. The parade will conclude at Phillips 66 Plaza, where the veterans will be welcomed by EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower and an Oshkosh Corp. representative for a ceremony that will honor their service. The parade is just one of several special events scheduled for Salute to Veterans Day, presented by Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., on July 27, which will also feature an expanded Warbirds Spectacular air show, the Honor Flight welcome home ceremony, and a special evening performance from country star Phil Vassar.

Also on July 27, all veterans and active military personnel can pick up a free Salute to Veterans commemorative hat, courtesy of Oshkosh Corp., the Disabled American Veterans, and EAA Warbirds of America. EAA Warbirds of America is implementing the use of QR codes to provide an easy and effective way for attendees to quickly get more information about display aircraft with their smartphones. The new QR codes will be displayed on or near the aircraft, each code specific to an individual warbird. Simply scan the code with your smartphone and you’ll be taken to a website that includes its history, specifications, images, and

additional links. If you are new to QR codes, you will need a couple of things to use the system. First, you must have a smartphone. Second, you must have an app that can read QR codes. Many of the new smartphones have QR scanners built right in. If yours does not, you can download one of many apps available, such as Red Laser, on any smartphone. EAA cracks open the vault: aviation treasures for sale Countless aviation items will be available for public purchase from the EAA AirVenture Museum Surplus Shop for the first time during AirVenture this week. “The AirVenture Museum is opening EAA’s attic to reduce the overwhelming size of our stored artifact collection,” said Jeff Skiles, EAA vice president of chapters and youth education. “We’re giving our members a chance to purchase some truly historic items.” Whether you are an avid flier or a history buff, the sheer variety and

quantity of artifacts tucked away in this storehouse—located in the same building as Paul Poberezny’s Airplane Factory—is incredible. Here’s just a sampling of what will be available for purchase when we open up the vault at 8 a.m. Monday, July 23. Assorted parts If you are looking for miscellaneous airplane parts, this shop is worth a walk-through. Engine parts of various models and sizes fill the shelves’ wooden bins, some

of which haven’t been cracked open in years. A few identified pieces include cylinders from Continental 220s and Pratt & Whitney R-985s and OX-5 engine parts. There are stacks of benches and paratrooper seats, an original-condition ejection seat off a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, assorted oil pumps and gauges, wire wheels from the 1920s, wood and metal propellers of all kinds, aircraft floats and skis, and many more artifacts just waiting to be discovered in this treasure trove. The B-17 propeller blades in the shop would make a great decoration or conversation piece. And just imagine an outstanding new addition or three to decorate your chapter hangar or pilot cave. Special engines Sitting directly outside the shop is a Wright 3350 turbo compound engine with a propeller off a Douglas DC-7. The engine is not in immediate working condition, and three of the prop blades have been shortened, but it sure would make a strong visual statement. A 28-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engine is the biggest piston engine ever built. We have one, with four rows of cylinders arranged in a spiral, inspiring the engine’s “corncob” nickname. Although WWII ended before this engine could power airplanes in combat, it did power the last generation of large piston-engine aircraft before being replaced by jets.

Crash remains A large, rusted piece of a landing gear from a Twin Beech stands ominously in the shop as the only part ever found after a crash into Lake Michigan. The Twin Beech saw military service during and after WWII for the United States Army Air Forces and the Navy.

Just for fun Interested in practicing tailwheel ground maneuvers? Although not designed for flight, there is an EAA Penguin, a non-flying tailwheel aircraft trainer, in fairly good condition that could be pulled behind a car to practice flying control exercises. A variety of EAA commemorative artifacts will also be available for purchase, including old patches, brochures, posters, and mounted newspaper clippings. Operating and maintenance handbooks from the 1950s and ’60s fill a table in the shop’s second room. Then there are stacks of old Aviation magazines dating back to the 1940s, carefully protected in plastic wrapping for years. Some items in the shop will be priced ahead of time, but the majority will be available on a “best offer” basis, Skiles said. The EAA AirVenture Museum Surplus Shop is located directly south of the EAA Fly-In Theater and will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 23-29. “This is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime,” Skiles said. “Make sure and drop by before it’s gone.” AVT

Tora! Tora! Tora! debuts in Warbirds Spectacular The Tora! Tora! Tora! aerial reenactment of the events of December 7, 1941—one of the most dazzling warbird air show performances flying today—will be part of the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh afternoon warbird shows for the first time this week. Tora! Tora! Tora! is a re-creation of the attack on Pearl Harbor, staged with the volunteers and aircraft of the Commemorative Air Force, that includes ground operations, maintenance, pilots, and pyrotechnic experts. Its purpose is to create a dynamic history lesson about the event that propelled the United States into

World War II. The re-creation is usually the feature performance at air shows throughout the nation, complete with professional narration, pyrotechnics, and dozens of World War II-era aircraft. “The incredible flying and pyrotechnics reinforce the story behind the events of December 1941 that forever changed the course of world and American history,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. They’re the penultimate example of birds of a feather—flying together in their annual migrations to EAA AirVenture from points scattered around the continent. It started years ago with Bonanzas to Oshkosh—a gathering of Beechcraft Bonanza singles and Baron twins. Over the years owners of other types and brands found the idea appealing, and the mass arrivals grew. Today the groupings include Cessnas, Piper Cherokees, Mooneys, and others who’ve started and stopped as interest flowed and ebbed. Homebuilt performance: Team RV makes first Oshkosh appearance Team RV, the world’s largest air show team that combines precision formation flying and formation aerobatics, will make its first EAA AirVenture appearance at the opening day air show on Monday, then again on Wednesday. The daily AirVenture air show is presented by Rockwell Collins. Team RV members fly the RV kit aircraft from Van’s Aircraft, the most popular amateur-built aircraft in the world with more than 7,000 currently in the air. As the RV aircraft are built by individuals, no two are exactly alike, and the multitude of paint schemes creates unmatched color swaths across the sky. “Team RV is changing the face of air shows throughout the country with its unique and exciting performance,” said Jim DiMatteo, EAA’s vice president of AirVenture features and attractions. “The team’s appearance is noteworthy as Van’s Aircraft founder Dick VanGrunsven will be honored during AirVenture 2012 for his contributions to sport aviation.” In fact, on Monday AirVenture celebrates the 40th anniversary of Van’s

RV aircraft with a salute to its founder, Dick VanGrunsven. Team RV consists of 12 aircraft that are capable of speeds in excess of 200 mph and gravitational forces of up to 6g’s. The team flies tight formations of recognizable shapes and carries out difficult rejoins within the aerobatic box at show center. Its four-ship aerobatic wing integrates diamond loops, Cubaneights, line abreast hammerheads, barrel rolls, and more. Back on the ground, all ships salute the audience with a formation pivot turn and full smoke. “Our routine requires intense concentration, highly developed stick and rudder skills, and complete trust in fellow wingmen,” said Mike “Kahuna” Stewart, Team RV founder and flight lead. “The reward of carrying out an action-packed performance with multiple aircraft can only be attained as a result of the passion and dedication of all team pilots.” Stewart started Team RV in 2002, and since then the team has evolved to a 12man group that now headlines national air shows throughout the eastern United

States. It has opened for the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and Snowbirds. Team RV members also took part in the 2007 and 2009 world record flights for the

largest civilian formation ever recorded, both at Oshkosh, when more than three dozen RVs flew in formation over the AirVenture grounds. AVT

Get around town with Oshkosh Transit System The Oshkosh Transit System will once again offer a public transportation route to and from the EAA grounds during AirVenture 2012. This special service route runs Sunday, July 22, through Sunday, July 29, with the first bus departing from Gruenhagen Hall and the last bus departing from the EAA Admissions Gate. Service hours: • Sunday, July 22: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. • Monday, July 23-Thursday, July 26: 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m. • Friday, July 27: 6:30 a.m.-11 p.m. • Saturday, July 28: 6:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. • Sunday, July 29: 6 a.m.-3 p.m. Buses run approximately every 30 minutes from the previous departure time, with more service provided

during peak morning and evening travel times. Route stops include Scott/Gruenhagen Halls on the UW-Oshkosh campus, EAA Admissions Gate, Transit Center, and Wittman Regional Airport. However, no OTS bus service will be provided to or from the airport after 3:40 p.m. each day. Customers should use the EAA shuttle service to and from the Admissions Gate after that time. One-way tickets are $1.50, or get a special weeklong $20 EAA pass from the Guest Reservations Center at the Gruenhagen Conference Center on the UW-Oshkosh campus. Children under 6 ride free. Runway 5K run/walk to benefit local organizations

George Lucas return, ‘Disney Night’ highlight Fly-In Theater Legendary filmmaker George Lucas returns to Oshkosh 2012, headlining a diverse collection of nightly presenters and feature films at the popular EAA Fly-In Theater, presented by Ford Motor Company and supported by Hamilton Watches. After last year’s exclusive AirVenture preview of the Tuskegee Airmen story Red Tails, Lucas returns to present the finished film Wednesday night. Making the evening even more special, Lucas will present the movie with surviving Tuskegee Airmen as well as Ford Motor Company’s Edsel B. Ford II. Returning on Tuesday, July 24, is pilot and EAA member David Ellison, presenting his 2011 film, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, plus trailers for two of his upcoming movies. NASA returns to AirVenture in a big way Af ter a several-year absence, N A S A returns to AirVenture with a new exhibit and several peeks into the future in aviation and space. Located in Innovation Hangar South, NASA will have three exhibit areas featuring a mobile space exploration experience, commercial space partners, the Johnson Space Center team highlighting the International Space Station, and the humanoid robotic project “Robonaut.” “Drive to Explore” is a free multimedia exhibit that immerses visitors in the

story of NASA using technology to connect them with the space program and show visitors research activities and flight missions, plus a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch a 4-billion-year-old moon rock brought back on the last moon mission, Apollo 17. Let’s go shopping at AirVenture There are hundreds, probably thousands, of reasons pilots and airplane owners come to AirVenture Oshkosh every year. As many as 30,000 airplanes will come and go during the week, so there are at least that many reasons to be here. When EAA surveys people at AirVenture and asks about their top reasons for attending we get the expected responses: to see the afternoon air show, or warbirds—always near the top of the attractions—and antique and classic airplanes, which hold strong allure for most. But for airplane owners and pilots the top reason to be at AirVenture is to see the hundreds of manufacturers’ exhibits. Every kind of aircraft from business jets to powered parachutes is on display, and representatives are anxious to tell you about their machines. And the four main exhibit halls at AirVenture are filled with every type of avionics, headset, pilot supply, and aircraft building material

BY J. MAC McCLELLAN you can imagine. What really makes AirVenture Oshkosh special is that the show has grown to dominate the market for personal aviation of all types. That means that no manufacturer can afford to skip AirVenture, so you will see here every aviation product and service of significance. Even more importantly is that the dominance of AirVenture makes Oshkosh in July the target date for nearly every major new product or service introduction for the year. Naturally enough, manufacturers’ want to maximize the impact of a new product introduction. There is no better way to do that than to plan to roll out a new airplane, accessory, or service at AirVenture. More pilots, airplane owners, and personal aviation enthusiasts are at Oshkosh than any other single spot during the year. And the aviation media also focuses maximum attention on AirVenture. Every significant aviation magazine,

website, and video service attends. Manufacturers can get more media exposure in a few days at Oshkosh than would be possible for the rest of the year. As pilots, airplane owners, and shoppers we all benefit because at Oshkosh we get to see, touch, and maybe even fly the latest in personal aviation. Video and magazine ads are great, but you can’t beat hands-on when it comes to evaluating the latest in aviation. Best of all many—actually most— manufacturers have special show discounts valid only here at Oshkosh for the week. Not only can you be first to have the newest goodies, but you will also probably pay less than those who don’t come to the show. Another major reason to come to AirVenture is to learn. There are, of course, hundreds of seminars on the basics of aircraft building, such as welding, wood working, fabric covering, and sheet-metal construction techniques. But there are also seminars

and demonstrations on the latest technology and accessories. This year at Oshkosh companies are rolling out a tidal wave of new equipment to receive and display the information the FAA is broadcasting over ADS-B. The issues are complex, and the equipment choices and capabilities widely varied. And there is the looming requirement for all airplanes to be equipped with approved ADS-B out to fly in regulated airspace by the year 2020. At AirVenture you can see the many ADS-B systems in action, and listen to explanations of what the equipment and software does. Garmin has even created the Garmin ADS-B Academy that is offering daily seminars on the topic. AirVenture is the show and Oshkosh is the place where aviation comes together and shows off the latest and greatest. AirVenture is many things, to be sure, but for pilots and airplane owners and builders, it’s the greatest shopping mall on earth. AVT

Sunday AirVenture preview: An evening with champions For the 27th year, AviationSpeakers.com presents AirVenture’s pre-convention warm-up tonight at 7 at Theater in the Woods. Master of ceremonies will be Tye Mortensen, who makes his second appearance after succeeding his father, Danny, in 2011. Tye, who says, “I cannot imagine a summer without a trip to Oshkosh,” has been a regular here since the age of 4, is a private pilot, and lives in Kentucky. Here is the rest of Sunday night’s lineup. 7:30 p.m. - Betty Geiger-Darst portrays Katharine Wright and shares her insight into the world of the Wright brothers in an accurate, honorable portrayal. A gifted historian, Betty brings history to life through a multimedia presentation, showing seldom-seen photos, letters, and diaries. The presentation includes personal interviews with the family. After seeing Betty’s gift for re-creating history firsthand, Paul Poberezny said, “I gained a new appreciation for the Wrights.” Betty is the navigator for her husband who pilots their Piper Arrow. 8:15 p.m. - Gregory Feith worked at the NTSB for 22 years as a senior air safety investigator and was investigator in charge on many high-profile air disaster

investigations including the 1996 ValuJet crash in the Everglades; the 1997 CFIT accident in Guam involving a Korean Air Boeing 747-300; and the 1994 American Eagle ATR 72 crash in Roselawn. ATP-certificated and trained on numerous air transport and GA aircraft, Greg flies his PA-260. As a self-proclaimed evangelist for aviation safety, he speaks about risks and hot issues that compromise flight safety in the GA and airline industries. Greg is seen regularly as a safety expert on NBC, MSNBC, The History Channel, PBS, and other networks. He works as an aviation safety and security consultant and expert witness. 9 p.m. - Dr. Jay Apt spent more than 35 days in space on four space shuttle missions, including two space walks. He’s been to the Russian space station Mir and is a recipient of NASA’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medal. Apt is now a tenured professor at Carnegie Mellon University. With 5,500 hours in 25 types of aircraft, he’s flown personally to Greenland, Guatemala, England, and Alaska. His program, “Spacewalking and What’s It Really

Like Up There?” shares the human side of spaceflight, from how astronauts are chosen, to training, the night before a launch, leaving Earth, working and

RV-1 to be donated to EAA Monday The “original” airplane Dick VanGrunsven designed and designated the RV-1 will arrive in style on AirVenture opening day, Monday, July 23—specially designated as A Salute to Van’s Day. The airplane, originally a Stits Playboy, was modified by Van more than 40 years ago with a new cantilever wing, canopy, cowling, and other mods. Van’s Aircraft is donating the RV-1 to EAA for display in the EAA AirVenture Museum. The airplane has made its way around the United States on a tour that began at Sun ’n Fun in April. It flew up the East Coast, over the border to and across Canada, and back down across the West Coast before making its way to Oshkosh. The official opening day arrival is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. at Phillips 66 Plaza right before the air show. (Time subject to change due to weather.)

The RV-1 will lead a parade of all RV models produced by the company over the years, with a special flyby tribute from the RV formation group Falcon Flight. EAA President/CEO Rod Hightower will be on hand to accept the keys to the historic aircraft and host a brief ceremony dedicating the airplane as it makes its permanent home in the cradle of homebuilt aviation, Oshkosh. Among the special activities planned for the week: • Van has a special appearance scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Theater in the Woods. • The Team RV formation group will perform throughout the week. • The RV-1 will be the featured airplane in the Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Homebuilders Hangar on Tuesday morning. Around the Field BY JACK HODGSON The North 40 camping area at AirVenture is a great big neighborhood. It’s also a collection of smaller neighborhoods of focused interest. For example, each of the type clubs will gather into a little N40 community of like-minded pilots and family members. The Cherokees to Oshkosh (C2O) group is but one of those neighborhoods. Formed three years ago to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the PA-28, C2O is one of many type clubs that arrive at AirVenture as a group, camping together to better enjoy each other’s company. C2O arrived Friday afternoon and as of Saturday morning, the excitement of the mass arrival has calmed. The group’s members are enjoying the morning air, gathered in circles near pitched tents and tied-down airplanes. Two small groups sit chatting across a taxiway from one another. Sandra Harding from Wadsworth, Ohio (15G), is one of a group of women in a circle of camp chairs. Sandra is a pilot attending her fourth AirVenture. She’s participated in the C2O event all three years. Asked if C2O

is like a neighborhood, she expresses a different view: “It’s more a family than a neighborhood. “Being a family we try very hard to mix with all the other groups that come in, rather than just keep to ourselves.” The other women agree. “It’s the people,” says one. They enjoy coming back to the fly-in each year and resuming their friendships. What do they look forward to each year? “Meeting the people again,” says one. “Catching up on the year’s activities and what we’ve done and going to the mini-clinic and performing there.” Sitting with Sandra are Carol Bailey from Greenville, Pennsylvania (4G1), and Dory LeBlanc from Lakeway, Texas (3R9). Terry and Karen Hocking from Hibbing, Minnesota (HIB), are the leaders of the C2O group. Karen is away from the campsite, but Terry is sitting across the way beside a tied-down airplane with a half dozen other guys, also talking and enjoying the morning at Oshkosh. And he agrees with Sandra. “We consider it a family.”

In what way? One of the guys in Terry’s circle quips: “We can’t stand each other.” Big laugh…but it’s clear these people enjoy each other’s company. Both of these C2O circles agree that, though they only meet up face-to-face once or twice a year, they enjoy staying in touch via e-mail and social media. “The bond that has formed is incredible,” Dory says. She tells of the newcomer to their group who was impressed with how well they knew one another. “‘Wow,’ she said to me, ‘you’re all so close!’ but I said, ‘No, I haven’t seen these people for a

year.’ But there’s something about it. You just become like a family. An extended family.” And it’s addictive. “We think that [since] we’ve come a few years now, maybe next year we’ll take a break,” says Dory. “And then we get here, and we go, ‘Oh gosh, I’m not sure I could go without seeing these people next year.’ So it’s on the agenda again for next year.” Learn more about Cherokees to Oshkosh at their website, www.
