Newspaper theft is a crime. It is also a terribly effective form of censorship. While most college newspapers are distributed without charge, they certainly are not “free.” Publishing a student newspaper is an expensive undertaking. Like other types of theft, newspaper thieves deprive rightful owners of their valuable property. If you are interested in obtaining more that one issue, please contact the executive editor in writing.

Where do I go from here? By SEAN C. PORTER EXECUTIVE EDITOR
My first year on campus was a bit of a blur. I wasn’t really sure where everything was located on campus, and I felt really confused on what to do next. Hopefully, through this guide, you will get a better
sense of belonging in this university. My first piece of advice is to get involved. Getting involved on campus not only keeps you occupied, it also gives you more experience outside the classroom. Student government is a great way to get involved on campus and help make a differ-
ence in your school. Getting involved in any specific career-oriented club can also get you a head start on your career, and it’ll help you decide if you really like your major. Joining any club sports team or playing intramural sports will help keep you in shape and are great for team-building.
Getting an on-campus job will put some extra money in your pocket without having to travel. Getting involved in any way with your school will pay dividends through your resume. By doing this, you will also accumulate service learning hours, which you need to graduate.

Tips for the Freshman Commuter By SAMANTHA ROESLER OPINION EDITOR
If you are a freshman at FGCU and you’re not living on campus, you may feel a bit like an outcast (I know I did). You fear that you won’t live the true “college experience” because you’ll still be living at home and you think it will be harder to make friends. I am approaching my third year as a commuter and I have comprised a list of tips to help you stay involved around campus and still get the most out of your college years. Do not forget about your hobbies or interests. Think about what you enjoy doing
with your free time, it is more likely than not that FGCU has a club for it. See page 10B-12B for a complete list of RSOs. Tennis club is a great way for me to get my mind off the stress of school and meet new people who share the same passion as me.
Talk to random people in class. Be brave! My first semester at FGCU I complimented a girl sitting next to me on her tattoo, and we continued to talk all throughout the semester. It is nice to have a class buddy, especially for those courses that are a little harder to get up for in
300
5
the morning. Use social media to your advantage. Since you aren’t living on campus, you might find it harder to hear about events going on throughout the semester. Go on Instagram or Facebook and follow pages that will keep you updated of fun things happening! I hope these tips will help you in getting involved around campus and feeling more confident that you’re getting the best college experience possible. Do you have your own tips you’d like to share? Contact me! I will be doing monthly advice sections and would love your input.

Best places to eat at FGCU
I
f you’re new to the area, you probably don’t know about the restaurants around FGCU. On campus, your options are a little limited. SoVi Dining is great if you live on campus, but sometimes it can get a little boring. On the main part of campus, you’ll find Chic-Fil-A, which seems to be everyone’s favorite. You can also find Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Brahma, Jamba Juice, Papa John’s and the Marketplace. Most of these places are pretty self-explanatory, but the Marketplace has sandwiches and burrito bowls, among other things. If you venture into North Lake, you will find The Boardwalk, which serves solo pizzas,
wings and other items. Tip: If you are of legal drinking age, they also serve beer and wine. Once you get off campus, you will have plenty of options all around. Gulf Coast Town Center has plenty of options at all price ranges. If you’re looking for a quick meal, there’s a Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Zaxby’s and Pollo Tropical. There’s also a Panera Bread, Chipotle, Moe’s, Cheddar’s, Olive Garden, Carabba’s, P.F. Chang, Miller’s Ale House, Outback Steakhouse, First Watch and Connor’s Steakhouse. The other nearest gathering of food places is at the nearest Publix. The mall in that di-
rection, Miromar Outlets, has some good restaurants. At the mall, you can find an Auntie Anne’s, Dairy Queen, Subway, Ford’s Garage, Luna Pizza, Naples Flatbread, Wasabi Japanese Steak House and a few others. There is also a chinese restaurant near Publix, as well
as a Beef ‘o’ Brady’s. If you’re looking for some local food, try The Eatery by Ryan and FK Your Diet. They’re both located on U.S. 41, within a few miles of FGCU. If you know of any other food places we should try, email us!

We want to hear your voice
T
he primary function of Eagle News is to inform our student body of what’s happening at our school. We have a team that is focused on giving out accurate news as it develops and focusing on the stories that really matter to students. That being said, we need your help finding these stories. If you know of something on campus that needs to be brought to light, send us an email. If you want to write an article, we happily welcome guest columns and can get you a spot in our publication. If you think there’s something on campus that’s really great but isn’t being utilized enough, let us know. We were founded to be the voice of our school, and we want to follow up on that. If you are interested in becoming a part of our team, we are always looking for new people to teach. Send us an email and we will get back to you. If you have any questions for what we do and how we work, we are more than happy to answer them. We won’t hear about everything going on around campus, but we want to make sure that Eagle News is the place to go to hear about FGCU. Go Eagles!
