By Patrick Clines Contributing Writer @fgcueaglenews The FGCU women’s tennis (9-7, 5-0 A-SUN) claimed their second straight A-SUN regular season championship in a close fashion as they defeated UNF (15-7, 5-1 A-SUN) by a score of 4-3. The win for the Eagles was the second straight win against UNF, and with the win, the Eagles are now 2-13 in the all-time series against the Ospreys. In addition to the win, the Eagles are now the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. “I am really proud of this team, and the fight they show,” said head coach Courtney Vernon. “North Florida is always tough and they

We were down and for the girls battle back and win that, it was a lot of fun.” Beginning with doubles portion of the matchup, the duo of junior Patricia Villar and freshman Madison Gallegos began with a quick win on their match at No. 3 doubles as they defeated the freshmen duo of Valentina Mariotto and Florencia Rossi by a score of 6-1, but the Ospreys would battle back as the duo of sophomore Lucia Montano and freshman Eva Nyikos defeated senior Julianna Curtis and junior Laura Falceto Font by a score 7-5 at the No. 2 doubles. After three match point chances, the duo of junior Julia Ascua and sophomore Maja Ornberg fell 6-7 (7-9) to junior Rafaela Gomez and

senior Luise Intert in a heartbreaking decider at No. 1 doubles, giving UNF the doubles point. Going into singles, Gallegos would be the first to fall as she lost 4-6, 1-6 to Montano at the No. 3 singles. Falceto Font would fall next, losing 1-6, 2-6 to Intert in No. 4 singles. With the score 3-0 in favor of UNF, the Eagles attempted to mount a comeback as sophomore Bridget Forster would open 6-4, 6-2 win over Rossi at No. 6 singles. Ascua would then follow with a win of her own at the No. 2 singles as she defeated Nyikos by a score of 6-3, 7-5. With two matches left for both teams, the Eagles were able to tie the matchup as Ornberg, who was slightly down in the second set bounced back winning 6-3, 6-4

against Gomez playing at No. 1 singles. The decider came down to Mariotto and sophomore Sofia Perez at the No. 5 singles match. Having not played UNF at all for conference, Perez would drop in the first set, but was able to mount a strong comeback, winning in the second set, thus sending the match to a third set. Seemingly unfazed at the result of the, with the final at 40-30 in favor of Perez, the Costa Rica native managed to secure the final set as she won 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. The Eagles will return to action next week when they head to Jacksonville for the ASUN tournament.

Police Beat

Eagle News writes this beat from the official UPD weekly summary On Tuesday, April 10, a complainant filed a report that someone had slashed the tires of his car in Garage B. UPD officers reviewed camera footage during the reported time frame but the cameras did not reveal anyone in the area around his car. Officers believe the damage caused to the

tires was due a low tire pressure and worn side walls. An accident in front of Garage 1 on Tuesday, April 10 at 12:00 p.m., resulted in the injury of one driver. The injured driver called 911 and received medical attention. The other driver involved in the crash suffered no injuries.

An administrative search was conducted in South Village Biscayne Hall on Tuesday, April 10, at 2:16 p.m. No residents were present when the search conducted. Housing turned the search over to UPD officers, who identified the subject living in the dorm and arrested him for drug

possession. The subject was transferred to Lee County Jail for booking. A hit and run was reported on Tuesday, April 10 at 5:27 p.m., on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway. The driver of vehicle two followed after the driver of vehicle one and arrived at Homewood Suites. A Lee County officer

was dispatched to that location. On Wednesday, April 11 at 10:46 a.m., a bike was reported stolen from outside the AB Library. The bike is blue with a whicker basked, rear view mirror, and water bottle holder.

Trump betrayed his voters

AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais President Donald Trump speaks at an event to promote his tax cut package at Bucky Dent Park in Hialeah, Fla., Monday, April 16, 2018.

By Ryan Denson Staff Writer @RD3001 An ever-increasing swamp presence, airstrikes against Syria, tariffs that will hurt the Midwest, and a growing Russian scandal with a porn star in the fold. On top of that, we’ve got word that Trump is preparing to re-enter the Trans Pacific Partnership, the trade agreement he railed against as unfair to working class America. Everything Donald Trump has promised his most ardent supporters - less regulation,

protectionism, fair trade, swamp-draining - has gone down the tubes. By the way, how’s that wall coming along? Just before the 2016 election, then-candidate Trump promised that if Hillary Clinton won, her presidency would be plagued with scandals, investigations and a cloud of doubt. As 2018 rages on, we’ve discovered that Trump was half-right, only he is the one being hunted and dogged by ever-growing scandals that would make Richard Nixon blush. The tide is turning, with Trump dropping in support

amongst all demographics, including Republicans, white people and men. As Stormy Daniels deals blow after blow (no pun intended) to President Trump’s hopes and dreams of a smooth presidency, Robert Mueller’s probe digs deeper and deeper into Trumpland, starting with Michael Cohen, the president’s controversial and combative personal attorney. Reports are now surfacing that Sean Hannity, Fox News blowhard and Trump’s primetime righthand man, is a client of the notoriously exclusive Cohen. Imagine, if you can, what the

Republican reaction would be if President Obama’s personal attorney was raided (thus being potentially implicated in criminal wrongdoing) only to discover that Rachel Maddow - more or less an Obama supporter - was also on the attorney’s dole. The rank corruption and idiocrasy that exists in the current administration is unparalleled to anything this country has ever seen. The corruption extends not only from the president himself (who sees millions of federal and RNC tax dollars flooding into his business ventures),but also with his cabi-

net. Scott Pruitt, Ben Carson, Ryan Zinke and the lot have faced unflattering and blistering headlines over their lavish spending on the taxpayer’s account. Millionaires and billionaires before they entered office, they seemingly have no qualms taking money from the working class they claim to support in order to maintain prestige and uphold an image of superiority. The “liberal elitists” that Fox News and the rest of the GOP ilk attached to Obama and Clinton are laughable when contrasted to the real-world comic book villain

persona that Trump appointees reveal themselves to be. The lies, the corruption, the illegality and the inside favors permeating from the echo chambers of conservative realpolitik is destroying our institutions, and Republicans applaud. The tribalism has reached almost the point of no return. And those who will suffer most are Trump voters in “America’s heartland.” We told you so.

Increased security in schools should not be necessary By Krista Prince Staff Writer @Kristaprince_

Following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Lee County School District officials announced plans to boost security on school campuses. The Village of Estero Council even voted to move funds toward increasing school security following the Parkland shooting. At FGCU, President Mike Martin addressed any concerns regarding the security on campus and assured students that the university is prepared for any incidents that may occur. University Police Chief Steven Moore sent out a campus-wide email following the shooting that contained information on the university’s safety precautions, such as how to register for FGCU’s text message alerts and links to safety videos. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High students returned to

school faced with a number of precautions, including clear plastic backpacks being the only bookbags allowed on campus, increased police presence, and fewer entrances, according to NPR. These clear plastic backpacks faced a lot of backlash from students of the school, but also from the public. Students took to Twitter to express that kids “in the hood” have been wearing clear backpacks since elementary school. But none of this should be necessary. According to CNN, there has been 17 school shootings in 2018 alone. It is only April. Local school districts are spending money to increase police and security presence on campuses. Maybe it seems safer because these officers carry guns, but if you had a cold would you rather spend money treating the symptoms or would you just treat the cold? Sure, adding more safety precautions and security can help the problem, but it doesn’t fix it because there will always

be room for error. The only way to fix the problem is to get rid of it, and the problem is not that there is not enough security in schools. I grew up doing lockdown drills and being trained on what to do if there was an active shooter on my campus. The problem is that there are too many guns, and they are too easy to get. Instead of spending money on increasing security at places that could fall victim to mass shootings, the weapons that are used in mass shootings should be banned. Countries like Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan all have strict gun laws. For the UK, the melting point was after a primary school shooting in 1996, according to the Guardian. For Australia, it also took a mass shooting to spark the change, but that was in 1996. There is still a problem here in the United States, and there have been 17 deadly school shootings just this year.

Beach volleyball sets program record

EN Photo / Brad Young The FGCU beach volleyball team clinched a second place seed in the ASUN Tournament after a dominant 3-1 record in four games this past weekend. The Eagles took on Jacksonville and UNF twice over the weekend, earning three wins to finish their regular season with a program best conference record of 7-3 and a program-record of 13 wins in a season.

By Matt Rothman Assistant Sports Editor @MattRothman3 Beach volleyball It was a successful final weekend for the FGCU beach volleyball team as they finished with a 3-1 record in their four games at Estero Community Park. The team also clinched a second place seed in the ASUN Tournament as well as setting a program-record of 13 wins in a season and seven conference wins. With four ASUN teams all coming to Fort

Myers, the Eagles took on Jacksonville and UNF twice on Friday and Saturday while Stetson played UNF and Jacksonville twice. The lone loss came from UNF in the second match on Friday, but the Eagles got revenge on Saturday with a 3-2 win. In the matchups against Jacksonville, FGCU won all 10 matches and earned two 5-0 wins. To open up the weekend, FGCU faced off against Jacksonville. Kellie Pernula made her debut with her partner

Kaitlan Krivdo and picked up a three set win for one of the five points. The other four pairings all won in straight sets with Kayla Whetstone and Snowy Burnham dropping just 21 points in the two sets. Karissa Rhoades and Katherine Puisis also won easily and took the second set in dominant fashion winning 21 of the 26 points. I think we learned a lot about each other so we know what we like and how we like to get set, “Rhoades said. “We are very

comfortable, Puisis said. “For us, it’s just about having fun and playing the game, nothing to serious.” After not having a break, the Eagles were right back in action against UNF, who lost a couple hours earlier in the day to No. 17 Stetson. The Ospreys were able to clinch the match with three straight wins, but both Kayla Whetstone and Snowy Burnam our up quite a fight despite falling in the three sets. The freshman pair won the the first set 21-17 then

lost 16-21 in the second. They trailed for most of the third set, but was able to get it even at 14 and after saving a couple of match points, would eventually fall 17-15. The lone wins from the Eagles came from Amanda Carroll and Mackenzie Allen, who won 21-18, 21-14 and Ashley Glickert and Giovanna Borgiotti in a 2116, 21-14 win. “We executed well in the opener, and I was really pleased with Kellie’s performance coming into the No. 5 pair for the first time this season,” said head

coach Matt Botsford. “I thought UNF pressured us from the service line throughout. Our setting didn’t allow us to be as aggressive as we would have liked.” FGCU had a much better second chance with UNF as they defeated the Ospreys 3-2. With UNF losing their first game as well as their second to Stetson, the Eagles clinches a share of second place with their win over Jacksonville again on senior day with another 5-0 win.

Baseball wins one of three in Jacksonville

EN Photo / Brad Young The FGCU baseball team suffered tough losses over the weekend, dropping two of three games to No. 1 Jacksonville. In the first and lone win over the weekend, pinch hitter Jake Smith had the game-winning hit in the tenth hitting.

By Matt Rothman Assistant Sports Editor @MattRothman3 Baseball The FGCU baseball team had a tough weekend in Jacksonville as they dropped two of three games to the first-place Dolphins. The weekend started off with an extra inning win as Jake Smith came through for a game-winning hit in the tenth inning. Mario Leon was in line for the win, but Jacksonville tied the game with a run in

the eighth off Trey Vickery. However, Kenton Herring pitched the final 2.1 innings to register his fifth win of the season. With poor weather scheduled for Sunday, the two teams agreed to play a double header on Saturday and a mercy rule after seven innings. That ended up coming into play as the Dolphins routed the Eagles 15-5. The second day of the game was closer, but FGCU scored just one run and fell 5-1 with Evan Lumbert

taking the loss. Up next, the Eagles will travel to Miami for a mid-week game with the Hurricanes on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Earlier this season the Eagles hosted the Hurricanes in Fort Myers earning a 1-0 at home. Last season, FGCU defeated Miami twice - once at home and once in Miam. At home, the Eagles swept the Hurricanes 3-0 and also earned a close 5-4 win on the road.

By Pat Clines Staff Writer @PatClines Women’s tennis The FGCU women’s tennis team (10-7, 6-0 A-SUN) have officially claimed the A-SUN regular season championship for the second straight season as they shutout Stetson (118, 3-3 A-SUN) by a score of 7-0. With the win, the Eagles are now 9-6 overall against the Hatters. “The performance was

great,” said head coach Courtney Vernon. “The girls played with a lot of focus today. They played with determination and they stuck to the plan, and it feels great and they are rewarded for their hard work and commitment to working.” The Eagles have clinched the No. 1 seed prior to the conference tournament after defeating UNF to hold a share of the regular season championship on April 12. “It’s a privilege,” said

Vernon. “We’re thankful for this opportunity, and thankful we get to play again because we’re having so much fun competing.” Beginning with doubles, the duo of sophomore Maja Ornberg and junior Julia Ascua fell 4-6 to sophomore Lucie Renault and freshman Brooke Milner at No. 1 doubles. However, the Eagles would fight back as junior Laura Falceto Font and senior Julianna Curtis defeated freshman Danel Ashirova and senior Arijana

Korac by a score of 6-2 at No. 2 doubles before junior Patricia Villar and freshman Madison Gallegos defeated freshman Vickey Geurinckx and sophomore Alexe Viaud by a score of 7-5, thus claiming the doubles point for the Eagles. Curtis earned her 55th doubles win in her career. After the doubles matches, the team gathered together at the Tom Manring court as they recognized Curtis for senior night and her accomplishments on and off the court. “I think that it was kind of surreal right now. It hadn’t really sunk in yet,” said Curtis on playing her last match. “Lau [Falceto Font] and I have done great this season after not playing as much in the fall. We did well and I think we just fought really hard.”

“We were so grateful to celebrate Julianna this evening as the special young lady she is. We’re grateful for what she has given to this university these past four years,” said Vernon on Curtis’ career performance. “Also, we are thankful for the community that supports our program and all of our donors that came out this evening for our last home match of the season. Tonight we would like to send a special thank you to Bonita Bay, who has given a scholarship to Juliana these past four years. What a gift it is to have them support us.” Transitioning to singles, Ascua began with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ashivora before Ornberg followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Korac. This was Ornberg’s 14th singles win of the season. With the score 3-0

in favor of the Eagles, sophomore Sofia Perez, who helped the Eagles clinch the No. 1 seed for the conference with the win against UNF, would once again seal the deal for the Eagles with her 10th win as she defeated Milner 6-1, 6-4 to give the Eagles the win. This was the third time that Perez clinched a gamewinner for the Eagles. “I’m just very happy that we were very loud and very energetic, and we came and got it done,” said Perez. “I didn’t even know I was clinching, but I just kept it going.” The Eagles would finish the rest of the matches as sophomore Bridget Forster defeated freshman Maxine Bateman 6-3, 6-2. In the final regular season conference games, the duo of Ashley Glickert and Giovanna Borgiotti compiled a perfect 4-0 record in their matchups with Jacksonville and UNF. Glickert and Borgiotti earned their first win of the weekend dropping just 14 points in each set in rote to a 5-0 team win over Jacksonville. The two players would be back in action just a few hours later and won 21-16, 21-14 despite their team falling to UNF. Just the next day, the pair led their team to a win over UNF with a tight two set win. Their final match was the lone match they played that went three sets, but they prevailed a 22-20, 20-22, 15-13 win and helped the Eagles set a program-best 16th win of the season.

POST SEASON TOURNAMENTS

Women’s tennis at ASUN Championship By Matt Rothman Assistant Sports Editor @MattRothman3 Women’s tennis The FGCU women’s tennis team will head to Jacksonville for the ASUN Championship as the No. 1 seed, following their second straight regular season

championship. “It’s a privilege and we’re thankful for this opportunity,” head coach Courtney Vernon said. “We are thankful to be playing again because we are having so much fun competing.” The Eagles will have a bye in the first round and then play the winner of (4)

Stetson and (5) Kennesaw State on Friday, April 20. North Florida, who the Eagles beat last week, will also have a bye in the quarterfinals and will face the winner of (3) Lipscomb and (6) NJIT. A year ago, FGCU was in the ASUN finals against Lipscomb and had a 3-2

lead, but an unfortunate injury forced an Eagle to retire and FGCU fell in the decisive match as the Ospreys reached the NCAA Tournament.

Men’s tennis at ASUN Championship By Matt Rothman Assistant Sports Editor @MattRothman3 Men’s tennis After securing the third seed in the ASUN regular season, the FGCU men’s tennis team will get ready to play NJIT on Friday, April 20. The following two days

will consist of the semifinals and finals. Should FGCU win on Friday, they will take on the winner on Stetson on Saturday. The Eagles recently played Stetson just this last week on Senior Day in the final match of the regular season, and the Hatters came away with a 5-2 win on the road.

UNF is the top seed following another ASUN Regular Season Championship. The other quarterfinal will consist of (4) Lipscomb and (5) Kennesaw State. After winning the ASUN Tournament last season at home, FGCU will look to make another consecutive trip to the

NCAA Tournament. During that run, they finished their semi-final match at 3:15 a.m. due to rain as they beat the top-seeded Ospreys. A little over 12 hours later, the Eagles won the ASUN tournament over Lipscomb before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Photo by Linwood Ferguson

championship final. The Hatters will host this championship at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Courts. “It looks like we will be playing UNF in this first round of the ASUN Tournament and that’s going to be a really tough matchup,” head coach Matt Botsford said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to prepare for them and put ourselves in the best position to succeed.”

Coming off an impressive seven conference game wins, the most in program history, the Eagles will play No. 3 UNF in the semifinals. The winner of this game will then go on to play in the final round of the tournament on Sunday. FGCU ended this season with an overall record of 13-9 and a conference record of 7-3. One of those loses came against UNF just a week before this

tournament. The Eagles suffered a 2-3 loss to the Ospreys on Friday, but came back Saturday to earn a 3-2 victory over UNF. A year ago, FGCU ended the season with an overall record of 15-9 and a conference record of 6-4. The Eagles competed in the ASUN Finals last season but suffered a 1-3 loss to Stetson. FGCU defeated Mercer and UNF to earn a spot in the finals.

Off the Record: What’s new in the music world?

Photos Courtesy of Wiki Commons

J. Cole (left) and Drake (right) have become icons in the rap community. Known for their different styles of musicality, both artists have become commercially successful.

By Sean Porter Staff Writer @RealSeanCPorter

Flatbush Zombies The rap trio dropped their second studio album last week, Vacation in Hell. This album has no skippable songs and a few bangers. Headstone and U&I were singles from the album that were released before the album, and caught the attention of many. True fans of Flatbush Zombies, knew long ago about Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick Arc Elliott, and now the rest of the world is learning their names. The feel of this album compared to their last album is much simpler and more tothe-point. Features from Joey Bada$$, Jadakiss, Denzel Curry and Portugal. The Man round this album out and make it a classic.

Kali Uchis Kali Uchis has dropped a new album, which is difficult to place in one specific genre.

Some songs on Isolation, such as After the Storm (feat. Tyler, the Creator and Bootsy Collins), have a funkier feel, whereas other songs such as Tyrant (feat. Jorja Smith), have a pop feel. Regardless, this album is a bop, and is a pivotal part of this new movement of music – which is hard to define. This album exists somewhere in the Venn diagram of neo-soul, traditional R&B, funk and pop, among other genres. This album is great to play while driving, relaxing and everything in between because it just makes you feel good.

Drake Drake’s new songs are helping to define the artist he is trying to become. He has continuously shifted away from his singing and is becoming almost 100% rap. His newest songs, God’s Plan, Look Alive and Nice For What all follow this route, and have done well on the charts. Drake also announced that he will be releasing an album, Scorpion, and while I hope for the best on this album, I know that it

won’t be Take Care. This album, however, looks like it’s going to be very interesting, and adds to the speculation of new music that will be released shortly.

J. Cole I know what I’ll be doing on 4/20. I’ll be listening to J. Cole’s new album, KOD. The title apparently has three meanings. After his last two albums, 2014 Forest Hills Drive and 4 Your Eyez Only, many expect the Dreamville team will deliver yet again. This new album has – you guessed it – zero big features, and one can only hope it will go platinum.

DIY: Stress Relief for Finals

How to keep up with finals without stressing out By Deanna Simmons E&L Editor @lvnarvinam With finals coming up, it’s becoming more obvious that things are getting stressful. There’s projects, presentations and exams, so there’s bound to be moments of stress. These simple tips will help you get through finals week and any other stressful events in your life. The first is an Orbeez Stress ball. This is really a lot of fun and a great craft to do if you’re really needing a stress ball and are a bit low on time. For this you’ll need Orbeez, a transparent balloon, water, and a bottle. First, fill the bottle up with

Orbeez. Take the balloon and fill it up just slightly with water. You won’t need much. Then, attach the top of the balloon to the bottle and transfer the Orbeez to the balloon. Tie the balloon shut and you’ll have yourself an Orbeez stress ball. The second is a detox water for stress. The most important thing about destressing is taking care of your health, and this should do the trick. For this you’ll need strawberry slices, cucumber slices, lime slices, crushed mint leaves, water, and ice. Mix all the ingredients into a container and let the mixture sit for 10 to 20 minutes. I personally prefer 20 because it lets the fruit

absorb fully into the water. Serve once the time has passed. The third is a mini zen garden. Zen gardens are really nice to have and really do help with destressing as well. What you’ll need is a shallow container, fine sand, small flat rocks,a bonsai tree, or something similar, and a mini zen garden rake. First, add a thin layer of sand to the tray so the designs you make will last. Put some decorations in, but don’t make it busy because the designs should be the most prominent part of the garden. Use the rake to create swirls and waves. The fourth is slime. Slime is a fun way to de-stress and get your attention on something else.

What you’ll need is white school glue, liquid starch, shaving cream and tiny rainbow round sprinkles. For this, you’ll start with two cups of glue, which you can really just estimate. Add one cup of shaving cream and one-fourth of a cup of liquid starch to the bowl before you stir. The slime will start to form after a minute of stirring. You can begin kneading the slime after that. Once it’s made, lay it out and add the sprinkles into the slime and wait thirty seconds so it has time to absorb. Pull it through your hand after and soon enough you’ll see the rainbows. The instructions of how to make a zen garden.
