We moved into what has become our only home in 1968. It didn’t take much to move us in. We had a bedframe and two twin size mattresses, a hand-crafted sofa that weighed more than my car, a bean bag chair, one floor lamp, a dining room table and chairs, one medium sized pot and a frying pan … and our wedding album. The house was a fixer-upper but we were young and willing to do the work.

We’d only been married for a little over a year and, so, we also brought the wedding gifts which included two sets of bath towels, one from my mother and one from my mother-in-law, four matching tea towels, three pot holders that my mom made, a spice rack and a set of white dishes that I bought at Grants. There were other gifts like silver trays, candlestick holders and tablecloths, but these were rarely used. Most reside where we put them in 1968.

Over the years we repaired, painted, added a family room and expanded the exquisitely tiny bathroom on the second floor and settled in to fill the house with the stuff of living. Two rooms became nurseries and the front of the refrigerator became the bulletin board of our lives.

Now, there is much more furniture, some of it that looks like furniture. Every surface is covered with photos and bookcases overflow with albums of photos chronicling our family’s growth as

Thomas Tait announces candidacy

To the editor:

I would like to formally announce my intention to run for the Cazenovia Village Board. The election will take place on June 20, 2023 at the lower level of the Cazenovia Public Library.

As a local Realtor, previous Trustee and lifelong resident of Cazenovia, I have a long and deep involvement with the Cazenovia community for the past 32+ years. My decision to run is based

well as lots of books. Truth be told, there are boxes of similar photos stashed in the attic that have been replaced by more current versions of the same people. Two drawers in the Hoosier are also filled with photographs.

And clothes …there are so many, some that reflect my spouse’s changing taste and those that are mine, most of which I no longer wear because I am no longer gainfully employed. Funny, I still find that there is not enough day to finish what I want to get done.

Don’t ask about the cellar or the attic. Please.

So, it was only this morning, as I was folding some rather ragged tea towels when I noticed that I no longer had any of said towels that could be hung over the handle of the oven without some form of housekeeping shame. Upstairs the bath towels sang the same song. I have one bath towel remaining from the ones that my mom gave us which I keep for sentimental reasons. The remaining towels could justifiably be donated to the vet or an animal rescue. I certainly could use a set of pots that didn’t scorch and an oven where I can bake on more than the bottom two shelves.

But I am more past that future and one thinks of what will happen when it comes time for our children to survey the result of more than 50 years of living in one house and figure out what to do next.

I should get rid of some stuff.

But … I would also like some new things, too. A set of tea towels primarily on a concern over issues facing Cazenovia and the surrounding area. The very sad news about the closing of Cazenovia College is certainly near the forefront of everyone’s mind. However, there are many other issues including the health and preservation of Cazenovia Lake, development pressure, aging infrastructure, ever increasing taxes, our aquifer and the vitality of the Historic Business District.

My decision to seek office comes from a strong desire to l From page 3 the kitchen director for the Friendship Inn. “They’ve been asking about it and asking about it, but with COVID jumping back up, we didn’t dare do it.”

The Friendship Inn dining hall is located in the lower level of the building at 21 Lincklaen St. shared by Summit Church and Cazenovia United Methodist Church.

Open to anyone and everyone, the non-profit meal service has provided grub such as pork chops, ziti coated in meat sauce, and hot dogs with sides of vegetables and fresh garden salads.

“You get a well-rounded meal,” said Dan Schallmo, the senior pastor for Summit Church. “There’s also a synergy between our churches, and we enjoy each other’s company. With the COVID restrictions essentially being lifted now too, we feel comfortable doing the inperson service again.”

The collaborative initiative led by the combined ministries has also welcomed helping hands from the greater community, whether it be from local businesses, the town rotary club, other churches, or random groups of volunteers who help to prepare and serve the meals. Moore calls the assistance received over the years a “blessing.”

I am truly honored to currently serve as the founder and Director of the Village of Cazenovia Tree Commission, Board Member and Director of Communications for the Cazenovia Lake Association and Trustee of the Cazenovia Public Library.

I am proud of the way our home is a kind of museum for the family from the sea floor flora that my spouse collected on his one and only scuba diving expedition to Figi to the so many examples of our children’s and grandchildren’s art and accomplishments…weedy handwriting describing spring using creative spelling and grammar, an illustrated exhortation to be kind. Priceless.

Yes, I should be deconstructing what has accumulated but even at this advanced age, I would like some new things … a freshening of mornings and days to enliven what remains. I’ve gone to so many showers for weddings and babies, I am thinking that it is time that we think about a replacement shower for us more advanced in years citizens to enjoy the surprises of unwrapping gifts while using the good China that hasn’t left the cupboard in 30 years and that no one wants.

In addition to my previous term on the Village Board I have served as Cazenovia Fire Chief, President of the Madison County Fire Chief’s Association, Cazenovia Preservation Foundation Board of ovia, Caz Sports Bowl, Tops Friendly Market, the Brewster Inn, the Lincklaen House, Heritage Hill Brewhouse and HeartStone Artisan Bakery have been among the establishments that have supplied food for the Friendship Inn’s Monday meals. The program supervisors also keep up with the contents of the monthly Food Bank of Central New York newsletter.

Because the Friendship Inn has regularly relied on Cazenovia College’s food service personnel for excess food, from pans of corn to frozen shrimp scampi, not to mention the support of administrators, faculty members and students through the semesters, Schallmo said the permanent closure of the institution after the current academic year will be a “deep loss.”

“It’s a shock wave that’s still rippling through our community,” he said. “We’ve enjoyed a good partnership and close association with them, so that’s going to be a big dent in our food supply.”

Speaking on the return of the service line to the indoor comfort of the Lincklaen Street building around the same time that the college is coming to an end, Moore said the remaining helpers will lift the food program up as best they can.

“It’s all a matter of faith, and we’re gonna make it work,” said Moore, a

My passion for serving our community is largely due to the values instilled by my parents. As a fourth generation family it is of paramount member of Cazenovia United Methodist Church.

The Friendship Inn started 10 years ago when Summit Church was located on Thompson Road off New York State Route 13. There are similar programs in Hamilton and Morrisville.

The Friendship Inn does not offer meals on national holidays or on days when the local school districts are closed due to snow.

“There is so much history in that building and such a long legacy of bringing joy and contributing to the community,” she said. “We didn’t want to see that lost, but it took us a long time to figure out what we could do that would stay within the confines of what the town allows but also fit with our vision for the space. [The Barrys] reopened Old and Everlasting near their new home in Maine, which just goes to show you how much they loved the shop; they just couldn’t live without it. So, it has always been a dream of ours to make sure the original building didn’t just sit vacant. We wanted to find a way to continue to have it mean something to this community and beyond.”

According to Woods O’Neill, her furniture refinishing work is another nod to Old and Ev- erlasting. “I really love taking pieces that no one wants and redoing them so that they live on,” she said. She explained that her process involves taking high-quality solid wood furniture that might not be in style right now and giving it a fresh look.

“. . . Buying new pieces of that quality is so expensive, so my business gives people an alternative — buying used but totally refinished during the Town Clerk's regular business hours.
