a century of outdoor fun Camp Lookout to celebrate 100 years

By kate hill Staff writer This spring, Madison County Children’s Camp (MCCC), “Camp Lookout,” will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a weekend of festivities from June 17 to 19. Located on Bradley Brook Reservoir in Eaton, NY, Camp Lookout is an overnight summer camp that welcomes boys and girls ages 8-13 — regardless of economic, social, or cultural background — who attend school in Madison County. Each year, the camp serves approximately 700 kids who would not otherwise be able to have a summer camp experience. The children, who attend camp free of charge from Sunday through Friday, come from

families who are low income and/or are faced with a variety of other challenges. School nurses, the department of social services, other human service agencies, and churches help to identify potential campers. Camp Lookout’s centennial celebration will kick off with a Friday evening program for all past and present counselors. The fireside event will include “Moth Radio Hour”-style stories and live music. The weekend will also include a mixed doubles, singleelimination tennis tournament; guided tours of the main grounds and nature trails; swimming and boating; two sessions of family crafts; a formal, adults-only gala; and an open house to introduce new campers to the Camp Lookout traditions.

Camp Lookout will celebrate 100 years of operation and serving Madison County with plans for special events June 17 to 19.

Childcare for kids ages five and up will be provided on Friday (7 to 9 p.m.) and Saturday (4 to 8 p.m.). According to MCCC Board President Gerard Redmond, the centennial celebration is intended not only to acknowledge 100 years of service to the children of Madison County, but also to accomplish the following: to thank the many people who have contributed to the camp throughout the years, to help raise money to fund the capital improvements needed to support the ever-changing needs of the county’s children, and to honor two longtime camp leaders, Camp Director Jimmy Burton and board member Leo Matzke, who previously served as executive director and camp director. “Both men have inspired

generations of children to [answer the call] of service to their communities,” Redmond said of Burton and Matzke, who have served Camp Lookout for a combined 87 years. “. . . People who join in our celebration

of camp and [the] honoring of Leo and Jimmy are in for a great dinner under the tent catered by the Brae Loch, along with the opportunity to learn more about a magical place for Camp l Page 13

CAP offers financial assistance to county residents impacted by COVID-19 By kate hill Staff writer

Community Action Program for Madison County, Inc. (CAP) is offering financial assistance to eligible residents who have experienced financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The available funds are designed to assist Madison County families and individuals who have experienced an emergency that has impacted their ability to cover basic living expenses. Such emergencies include losing a job, being unable to work because of a COVID diagnosis, having to stay home from work to care for someone

with COVID-19, or being unable to work due to a lack of childcare. CAP may be able to help by providing rental assistance (arrears and ongoing assistance), mortgage assistance, security deposit/first month’s rent, transportation assistance, utility payments, and by covering other expenses. According to CAP Interim Executive Director Elizabeth Crofut, CAP applied for and received funds through the New York State Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) CARES Act to help prevent, prepare for, or respond to the COVID19 pandemic. “Funding was made

available to New York State by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, 2020, Public Law 11636,” she said. To benefit from the program, residents are required to meet the income eligibility requirement. “A family’s annual household income must be 200 percent or less of the Federal Poverty Guidelines,” she said. “CAP ’s CSBG CARES program is still accepting applications for assistance. “The program ends Sept. 30, 2022.” Income guidelines are available at capmadco. org/covidrelief. The agency provides information, assistance, and support to its clients so they can gain the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to reach their full potential. Skanda receives donation from CNY’s 100 Women Who Care By Kate Hill Staff Writer

On April 6, The Haven at Skanda farm animal sanctuary and education center was selected as the recipient of 100 Women Who Care CNY’s quarterly philanthropy initiative. As this quarter’s winner, Skanda will receive a $100 check from every woman who belongs to the organization. 100 Women Who Care CNY is a group of around 100 women who come together for one hour four times a year to network, enjoy refreshments, and pool their money to support a local charity. Members can nominate up to three local 501(c)3 organizations, which are then selected randomly to present at the group’s next meeting. Representatives of the three selected groups discuss the work of their organizations for five minutes and answer questions from the members present. Following the presentations, each member casts an anonymous vote for the charity they feel would benefit most from a donation.

The charity with the most votes receives a $100 donation from each member. Ellen Beckerman, Skanda’s executive director, was one of the three nonprofit representatives given the opportunity to present at the April meeting. Located at 4000 Mosley Rd. in Cazenovia, Skanda is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for rescued and endangered farm animals, and to offering educational, supportive, and preventative programs to the public. “We have been admirers of this organization’s work for a while,” said Beckerman. “It was an honor to be able to share Skanda’s work, and of course thrilling to have been chosen to receive their donations.” During her presentation, Beckerman highlighted Skanda’s multifaceted work with both animals and people of all ages. According to Beckerman, Skanda takes in the nation’s most severely abused and neglected animals and gives them space to recover and “emerge as

who they really are.” For the last nine years, Skanda has been caring for over 150 rescued farm animals who come to the sanctuary from all over the country through a partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ national rescue teams. “The animals are able to emerge from trauma and leave it fully in the past, living as exactly who they are in the present moment,” Beckerman said. She also explained that because the animals are role models for recovery and healing from trauma, Skanda has created a variety of programs that allow the public to experience, learn from, and interact with the animals. Beckerman also demonstrated Skanda’s dedication to responding to community needs by highlighting its COVID19 emergency childcare initiative, LGBTQ youth support group, supportive programs for children with trauma, and efforts to welcome Ukrainian families to the farm. She concluded her presentation with an over-

view of Skanda’s newest program, which brings groups of kids from Syracuse to the farm through a partnership with the Syracuse Department of Parks and Recreation. According to Beckerman, Skanda has received about $6,300 from 100 Women Who Care CNY so far, and that total could increase depending on the final number of member donations. “My understanding is that during COVID, participation was lower than usual, and that this [membership] number is actually one of the higher numbers [they’ve had] over the last few years,” she said. Skanda plans to use the funds to bring 300 kids from Syracuse to the farm this year and to ensure that the new program in sustainable and ongoing. According to Beckerman, the first group of Syracuse kids arrived on Thursday, April 14. To learn more about The Haven at Skanda, visit thehavenatskanda.org. Caz College to present spring musical

If you’ve wondered what competing in a spelling bee is like, you’ll have a chance to channel that experience when Cazenovia College presents their musical later this month. The musical comedy, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” is being presented April 21 to 24 at the Catherine Cummings Theatre on the college campus. The show depicts a fictional spelling bee set in a middle school, where six quirky adolescents compete in a spelling contest that’s being run by four equally quirky grownups. The lively show features the unusual aspect that four audience members are invited on stage to compete in the bee— alongside the six student actors—during each of the performances. The 2005 Broadway production of the play was nominated for six Tony Awards and won two, including Best Book. Performance dates and times are: 8:00 p.m. on

Thursday, April 21; Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 24. Tickets to the event are now on sale via CNY Tix. Years Ago in History By Cindy Bell Tobey

165 years ago – April 22, 1857 On Monday night of last week, John Clark, while passing along Burr Street, on a visit to a friend, not knowing that the bridge across the creek has been rendered impassable, fell through into the water. He escaped without sustaining any serious injury. He mourns the loss of a new “plug hat,” for which he thinks the town ought to pay.

130 years ago – April 21, 1892

The world of business is rapidly and constantly changing, and the firm or co-partnership which survives more than a decade is the exception, not the rule. This is well exemplified by the obsolete advertisements which we sometime run across. One of the most curious relics of previous years which has come under our notice is a lap-board, with advertising matter on both sides of it, which was gotten out in Cazenovia in 1874 by D. E. Haskell & Co. for free distribution. It contains a large number of advertisements of which 87 are for Cazenovia businessmen or firms. Of these 65 have died, failed, sold out or retired leaving only 22 who have survived the “whirligig of time.” The printing was done in the office of the Cazenovia Republican but this business, like the rest, has had its changes. Although the name remains unchanged the ownership of the paper has changed four times, and it is now printed with entirely different type on different presses and by different persons than it was at that time.

100 years ago – April 20, 1922

70 years ago – April 17, 1952

Jim Fitch who passed away April 9, 1952, at Marcy at the age of 77, was doing his stuff on the Cazenovia Presbyterian Church steeple about 25 years ago. The picture is again published now to keep a promise the editor made to Jim three years ago that the picture would be printed in connection with Jim’s death announcement should the editor outlive his old time friend. The picture was taken by Walter Chard while Jim, once of Cazenovia’s most colorful characters, was painting the steeple. One 163 feet about the ground his is doing the “double hand horizontal” – one of the most difficult stunts in aerial work. He also stood on his head on the lower ball with arms outstretched, holding himself by hooking his toes around the weathervane. 680916

state says the stone fences are disappearing and asks; “Do you know where they are going to?” They are being crushed into bits and put into macadam roads. In their place, the county gives the farmer who sacrifices his stone fence, a wire substitute – some times. The stone fences are the markers of many a back-breaking hour for the farmer and his boys who cleared the fields of these rocks. His stone fence would last a century or more, but the wire substitute never will. Another asks: “Do you remember the men who laid the stone fences?” Stone walls, they used to call these fences: The man who could lay a stone fence lived a generation ago and toiled ten hours a day for a dollar and a half. Wire fencing has put him out of business.

Stay focused

As spring gradually settles into Central New York and with the summer months just ahead, it is likely there will be more people on the road out for day trips, longer vacations, a leisurely afternoon drive, or any number of other reasons. And while it should go without saying, being behind the wheel of any vehicle is a great responsibility that while we might take it for granted, we also need to stay focused and alert to what is all around us from other vehicles to pedestrians to possible road hazards and even animals dashing across the road. According to an organization known as End Distracted Driving, Enddd.org, distracted driving is any activity that takes away from the responsibilities we have while operating a motor vehicle. According to Enddd.org, there were 36,096 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2019, which represented a 2% decrease from 2018 fatalities of 36,835. While it was anticipated that with people driving less in 2020 this downward trend would continue, Enddd.org said through November of 2020 numbers indicate 38,370 people had lost their lives in crashes. According to Enddd.org, 7% of all fatal crashes in 2019 were distraction-related resulting in 3,142 lives lost, an increase of 9.9% over 2018 when 2,858 lives were lost due to distracted driving. Enddd.org shared some other statistics worth noting, including eight percent of fatal crashes, 15 percent of injury crashes, and 14 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2018 were reported as distraction-affected crashes. About 400,000 were injured and 2,841 killed as a result of distraction-affected crashes. About 1 of every 5 people killed by distracted drivers in 2018 were not in vehiclesthey were walking, riding bikes, or otherwise outside of vehicles. Distracted driving crashes are under-reported and the NSC estimates that cell phone use alone accounted for 27% of 2015 car crashes. Research conducted by telematics and behavioral analytics company Cambridge Mobile Telematics shows distracted driving occurring in more than 36 percent of trips across the United States. The fatal crash rate for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 20 and over. Driver distraction is responsible for more than 58% of teen crashes. According to the CDC drivers aged 15-19 were more likely to be distracted than drivers aged 20 and older, among drivers in crashes where a death occurred. Nine percent of all teens who died in crashes were killed in distraction-affected crashes. According to the organization there are several types of distraction including manual distractions which are those where you move your hands from the wheel. Visual distractions are those where you focus your eyes away from the road. A cognitive distraction is when you’re mind wanders away from the task of driving. Texting involves all three types of distraction. According to some research people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%. Enddd.org also shared that cell phone users are 5.36 times more likely to get into an accident than undistracted drivers. Text messaging for commercial drivers increases the risk of crash or near-crash by 23 times. Sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds, long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. This is something drivers are aware of, according to Enddd.org, well over 84% of drivers recognize the danger from cell phone distractions and find it “unacceptable” that drivers text or send an email while driving. Nevertheless, 36% of these same people admit to having read or sent a text message or email while driving in the previous month. It is also believed that teens whose parents drive distracted are two to four times as likely to also drive distracted. To learn more visit Enddd.org.

Should eye rolls be reserved for those that can’t live without a cell phone attached to their ear in the supermarket, the doctor’s office, church, walking down the street, in labor and delivery, in the classroom and yes, in the car? Would a shoulder shrug be the reaction to language formerly reserved for stevedores who frequented bars on the waterfront and now heard from the lips of kids in middle school who resent having to put their cell phones away? Should we designate an array of hand and finger signals for those that malign their opponents during election campaigns rather than demonstrate how they, as our elected representatives, will make our lives better? Should we save some of the more colorful of those finger signals for a smugness that looks the other way as our culture coarsens and we accept school violence as inevitable? Perhaps, in the latter instance, and in some of the former, a frown is an understatement of our chagrin. Maybe we should invent something more appropriate. Botox may relax the frown muscles, but what relaxes our indignation at the faults of our culture? Maybe the best reaction comes from the space between our ears and shows itself in actions that remedy the situation rather than reacting to them. My comments

To the editor: I read the letters to the editor in your April 6 edition. (p. 7) and have these comments. To Mr. Benson’s complaints about “Concerned about Manlius Leadership” I have to say, What ?!! He tells a story about some meeting to resist the solar array on Bowman Road and then a story about a town board meeting with the DEC. Interspersed are comments about the absence of the planning board. I say again, What?!! What is he talking about. The board votes on planning and expenditures. Is his complaint that they are voting on planning and expenditures? Or is he complaining that the planning committee is or isn’t doing something? All I know about Bowman Road is that it is a swamp bordering the canal and a handy cut-through between Fayetteville and Fremont. The rest will have to be explained to me. I also read Mr. Messineo’s letter and have these comments. Mr. Messineo is complaining that the town attorney, Mr. Frateschi, answered his letter to John Deer (Manlius supervisor) about conflict of interest on solar development. Maybe the gentleman never went to a town board meeting but I have attended many and Mr. Frateschi is always at the table at board meetings as well as the board meetings of several other towns. He is a town attorney. Did the gentleman expect a personal reply to his suspicious inquiry about the board members cheating the taxpayers? We never got that in years past. I assume he is just complaining about a new administration he is unfamiliar with. I would recommend Mr. Messineo attend some board meetings and become familiar with town business.

Recent letters

To the editor: The recent letters to the editor that appeared on April 6 in the Eagle Bulletin regarding the town board of Manlius, as well as the comments about the meeting on March 23, at the East Syracuse Minoa High School, would lead the reader to believe that, somehow, the members of the town board are disingenuous at best, and in fact, sneaky. One could get the impression that the loudest, opposing voices in the room that evening, represent the majority of voters in the town of Manlius. They do not! It is very important that it be fully known that the town planning board is not an elected body. They are appointed for seven year terms by our elected officials, i.e., the town board of Manlius, who represent the will of the people of this town. I voted for the current town board members because they have integrity and vision. They are simply doing for the voters what they promised to do. And they are looking to the future for our kids and grandkids who are pleading with us all to take seriously the need for drastic change if we are to meet the climate crisis. The negative, rude, and sometimes uncivil behavior demonstrated at the March 23 meeting, brought to mind a book written in 2016 called “The Road to Character” by David Brooks, a Republican. He talks about a broad shift in our culture from one of humility to a culture he refers to as the “Big Me” in which people tend to see themselves as the center of the universe. The “Not In My Backyard” attitudes by many who spoke opposing the Bowman Road Solar

Project on March 23 suggest that “Me” and not “We” should be what matters most. What matters most to me is my kids and grandkids and their contemporaries. They are sad, disillusioned, and angry that we’re not willing to sacrifice a little of our comfort and pleasures to do everything we can to work toward a sustainable future for them. Regarding the concern of the gentleman who wrote to the Eagle Bulletin about what he called a ceremony certifying Manlius as Climate Smart Community, I would like to note that personally, I received notification by email from Sustainable Manlius at 8:33 a.m. for the brief press conference held outside the town hall at 12:30 on March 24. Receiving the certification was the result of the hard work, not only of the town planning board, but also of the Sustainable Manlius subcommittee of the town board of Manlius. The people of Manlius can be proud of their elected officials, the work they have accomplished on behalf of the citizens of our town and on their actions on behalf of our children and grandchildren. Bullying and name calling

To the editor: To Mike Friend: Thanks for your letter in April 13’s Eagle Bulletin. You identify one of the real struggles in our modern society: bullying. It’s easy to do, and it feels great. Put opponents down and you don’t have to address their (often very real) concerns. Rhetorically, it’s powerful; civically, however, it’s destructive. Unfortunately, bullying is one tactic used Letters l Page 7

by no one party or group. Bullying is a human problem. The main problem with name-calling is that it ignores a problem in order to seem superior. The Right and Left have real concerns, and these concerns aren’t simple nitpicking but the well-being and life of the United States. Our call as citizens is not to complain about the other side but find, together, constructive ways to heal, build up, and support every human being in need. Mike, my sibling, I too am a Christian, and a priest in a part of the church that often (though not always) leans left. We must ask, both as citizens of this nation and as disciples of Jesus, how to overcome rampant name-calling and bullying. We begin where Jesus did, and where many other religious leaders have: we listen. We open our hearts, minds, and spirits to those who say that something is not right. We ignore the name-calling to see the deeper picture: who is hurting,

what is unfair, and how can we build a society where everyone has a voice and a place at the table. Often, pain and anger is expressed because a serious problem hasn’t gone away. This is the case for angry folks on the Left as well as the Right. It’s hard to listen to anger, but our job isn’t to balk in the face of frustration but to look past the name-calling to the root of the pain. And then: to listen and to heal. Rev. Tim Hannon, Christ Episcopal Church Manlius

which costs the taxpayers thousands of dollars a year to monitor and turn it into a resource which will: generate two revenue streams (lease and P.I.L.O.T. agreement) for the municipality which will help reduce the costs to monitor the capped landfill; reduce the electric bill for the municipality of Manlius through a Community Solar agreement; provide an opportunity for 500 residents to sign up for Community Solar which will reduce their electric bill with a priority given to residents adjacent to the solar farm; and perhaps most important, provide carbon free, clean energy. Change is difficult, but if we are to give the next generation a chance at a future we need to address climate change not just in word but in deed. Saying we are for solar energy but not if it affects “our view shed” will not help the next generation. For the sake of those who come after us we need to work together. Happy Earth Day. Caz College alum establishes scholarship At Cazenovia College there is a saying that the colelge creates experiences and friendships that last a lifetime. One alumna is showing that to be steadfastly true through a recent gift to the college which she made at the age of 99. Jeanne Moore Cordts grew up locally, just a few miles west of the college on her family’s Pompey farm. In 1940, she was accepted to attend Elmira College to pursue a teaching education, but an unexpected change in her family’s finances upended that plan. A summer storm devastated the family’s apple crop. It was the income source the family had long planned as the means to pay for her college education. Cordts wasn’t sure she’d be able to attend college at all when then-Cazenovia College President Burritt Harrington called on the family. He offered Cordts a place in the class, a workstudy job, and a scholarship that would make college possible after all. She applied, was accepted, and graduated with her associate degree in 1942. She greatly enjoyed the environment the college offered, her chance at the first step in her education, and an educational pursuit that kept her close to home yet allowed her to enjoy many campus activities and make lifelong friends. Her days there were particularly enjoyable, she reflects, because she was new to dating then, but had a college boyfriend she really enjoyed studying with, going to dances

Jeanne Moore Cordts of the class of 1942 has established a schoalrship at her alma mater. with, and the pair often visited the family farm. They dated for several years, but World War II intervened, and they went separate ways. Cordts went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees and pursued a doctorate as well, an endeavor that led to her meeting her future husband. As a young couple, they eventually moved to Maryland to take jobs with Frostburg State Teachers College. Recently, reflecting on how the college president’s offer and act of generosity changed her life, Cordts decided to pay it forward. She visited campus in December with her son to present the college a gift of $25,000, funds that will support student scholarships. She plans to visit the college in May for a dedication ceremony for The Jeanne Moore Cordts ’42 Study at Witherill Li-

brary. She has previously awarded a small scholarship, the Jeanne Moore Cordts ’42 Academic Excellence Scholarship, which is awarded to a returning student who has exhibited academic excellence by maintaining a minimum 3.25 grade point average. She and her husband also present a scholarship at Frostburg State , where both taught for years. However, with this gift, Cordts said she wanted to do more. She has reflected on how all five children in her family, subsisting on a farmer’s income, consistently needed to work at jobs and work hard to apply for scholarships every year, in order for all to attend college. And Cazenovia College served her family well, she said. In addition to the doors her own scholarship and college pursuits opened, her

Are golf slumps real? Dr. “Gio” says…”they are real”! Everyone who plays the game of golf has had to deal with two five letter words that have plagued us since the beginning of our golf careers. One is the word “ shank”, which usually is short lived and we will deal with in a future article. The other is the word “slump” which can affect us for weeks, months or perhaps even years. The word “slump” does not discriminate between a 36 handicapper or a +5 handicap player (PGA Tour level). It is simply inevitable that we will eventually be tagged with the word “slump”. Rather than bore you with my personal “slumps” or amateur “slumps” in general, let’s investigate how the word “slump” affects PGA Tour players and how they have had to deal with it. Dr. Gio Valiante is one of the most prominent sports psychologists in the world. He has worked with many of golf ’s top players, including Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, Sean O’Hair, Davis Love lll and Alexis Thompson. Over the past decade his clients have won dozens of championships and he has become the winningest sport psychologist on the PGA Tour during that time. In 2010, The Golf Channel crowned Dr. Valiante… Guru of the Year. His book…Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game, is a standard in golf psychology. He believes the breach in confidence is best cured by a return to the fundamentals and becoming “a student of oneself ”. He describes a “slump” this way, “Suddenly, without warning, the once accurate drives find more rough than fairway. The automatic 2-3 foot putts won’t fall…the hole repelling the ball like an irritating insect. Doubt creeps in. The water faucet of the mind shifts from a controllable drip to an unmanageable monsoon, cascading the brain with negativity. It’s insular”. Now that’s the most brilliant definition of a “slump” I have ever read. Examples: * Brandt Snedeker - After winning the 2015 AT&T, ending a 19 month winless drought said, “The funny thing about golf is when you’re playing bad, you never think you’re going to play good and when your playing good, you never think you’re going to play bad. The game of golf is not easy. I don’t care who you are. Out here everyone’s had their down times. Even the best players in the world go through it. Caz shines at Westhill meet by Kurt WHeeler

The Cazenovia girls track and field team turned in a series of impressive performances at last Tuesday’s Westhill Spring Break Invitational. Multiple Lakers achieved sectional qualifying standards as the team geared up for the heart of its regular season after the vacation. Melanie Michael led the team as she set a school record in the 200 meter hurdles, finishing second in 31.85 seconds. Already the holder of the indoor track record in this seldom-run event, she improved on her personal best by more than a second. Michael also led the Lakers’ 3x100 meter hurdle relay of Skye Stanford and Angela Moskvich to a fourth place finish in that event, with only Class AA schools ahead of them. Dinah Gifford was also impressive at the meet, finishing third in the grueling 2,000-meter steeplechase event in 8:16.05 in her first attempt at it. Gifford easily met the sectional qualifying standard and was only 11 seconds from the elite State Qualifier mark. She also contributed a personal best leg of 1:07.1 to the team’s sixth place 4x400 meter relay. Grace Dolan led the 4x400 group with a personal record leg of 1:02.8, an exceptional time for this early in the season. Olivia Ruddy (personal best of 1:07.3) and Maleigha Coffie also contributed to the season-best total of 4:32.48. Katie Whitney topped the team’s sprinters with a fourth-place time of 13.30 seconds in the 100 meter dash, as she hit the State Qualifier standard. Dolan’s 13.59 effort in the event was quick enough to hit the sectional mark. Whitney also led the way in the 200meter dash at 28.85 seconds with Michael adding a 29.49 effort and Gifford posting a 30.00. Faith Wheeler led the team’s middle-distance effort as she contributed a 2:42.71 in the 800 meter. Susie Pittman had her best day ever in the horizontal jumps, placing fourth in the long jump in a personal best 15 feet 1 inch and fourth in the triple jump at 32’ ½”, also a personal record. She also scored

Other top performances in the jumps included Emmi Rightmyre’s season best of 13’8” in the long jump, followed closely by Katie Pavelchak’s 13’6”. Corinne Albicker was also close to her season best as she hit 29’1” in the triple jump for Cazenovia. Wheeler added a 7-foot effort in the pole vault in her first meet of the season. Danielle Smith led the Lakers in the

throws, achieving a season best of 24’1” in the shot put and coming within inches of her best discus throw at 73’2”. Michaela Tobin added a season best of 22’7 ½” in the shot while Olivia Morse (60’3” and Stanford (57’10”) both achieved personal bests in the discus. The girls will be back in action Wednesday against Class B-1 powerhouse Westhill in a home contest in what promises to be a preview of two of the top teams in the section this spring.

Cazenovia boys lacrosse improves to 5-1 by Phil Blackwell

Bigger games are now in store for the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team after it tore through its season-opening stretch without suffering a setback. When the Lakers faced Tully/Fabius-Pompey last Monday at Cazenovia College, it was playing for the fifth time in 10 days yet showed little fatigue in the course of defeating the Black Knights 14-7. Far more important from Cazen-

ovia’s perspective was that it was not as dependent on Brody Coleman, who had netted 24 goals in his first four games, including 10 against Chittenango a week earlier. Not that Coleman was kept quiet – he still had three goals and three assists – but it was D.B. Falge who led the Lakers by scoring four times, and Forrest Ives matched Coleman’s three-goal output, adding an assist. Jack Wright and James LaFever each converted twice, Wright tacking

on two assists. Wyatt Hartley also had two assists. After a couple of days to rest, Cazenovia would, on Friday, travel north to face Carthage, perhaps its toughest test yet, and only here did the Lakers take a blemish, falling to the Comets 10-8. Coleman, Falge and Ives each put up a pair of goals, with Tucker Ives recording nine saves. Carthage went out in front and stayed there, though, as Carter Kempney and Josh Bigelow both finished with three goals.

Caz baseball gains wins on Myrtle Beach trip by Phil Blackwell

By the time the Cazenovia baseball team made its way back from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, it knew just what it needed to improve in order to get close to the standards it set last spring. The Lakers had lost its season opener to Homer before heading south, and then took on Mercer Island, from Washington State, where it dropped a 12-2 decision. The Islanders scored four runs in the second and fourth innings, plus three runs in the fifth. Both Cazenovia runs came in the fourth, scored by Jack Donlin and Jack Byrnes. Turning it around against Clarke High School, Cazenovia prevailed 10-8 for its first win of the season, steadily building an 8-2 advantage by the fifth inning. Clarke rallied, though, so the Lakers’ pair of seventhinning runs proved decisive as Byrnes had to get the last two outs in relief of Donlin. At the plate, Donlin went three-for-five with a double, two singles and two RBIs. Jacob Grevelding also drove in a pair of runs as Byrnes, A.J. Rothfeld and Sully Clarke

earned single RBIs. Far better was Thursday’s 10-0 shutout over Newark (Section V) where nine runs in the first two innings settled matters early, Byrnes doing the rest as he held Newark to one hit and struck out nine. Grevelding and Rothfeld both drove in a pair of runs, with Donlin adding a triple, double and RBI. Clarke dazzled on the base paths with four stolen bases and three runs scored. While all this was going on, Chittenango got its season underway against Mexico last Wednesday afternoon and was on the wrong end of a 1-0, eight-inning decision. Through seven innings of regulation, Bears pitcher Carlos Torres-Carman kept the Tigers’ bats quiet, but Mexico’s Connor Dubois matched him, surrendering just two hits, one each to Torres-Carman and Cooper Smith, while earning 12 strikeouts. Though he walked seven, Torres-Carman kept it 0-0 until the eighth, when the Tigers got Trevor Coe on base and brought him home with Kian Long’s single. Jacob Poissant then blanked Chittenango in the bottom of the eighth to end it.

Caz boys track competes at Tully Invitational

The Cazenovia varsity boys outdoor track team participated in the Tully Spring Invitational last Monday afternoon, short-handed due to spring break and placing 10th out of 14 schools. Still, there were some impressive performances by the Laker contingent. Connor Frisbee took second place in the pentathlon, racking up 2,188 points in the five events (110-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, 1,500 meters), a very good score for his first pentathlon. Elijah Clement took third place in the discus throw with a sectional qualifying distance of 98 feet 2 inches and also participated in the pole vault and shot. The Cazenovia team of Blaze Dannan, Kaleb Vasquez, Elijah Clement, and Aiden Harig took third place in the 4 x 50 meter sled pull, an event unique to the Tully Invitational, in a time of 1:17.75. Branden McColm took fourth place in the 3,200 meters with a personal record and sectional qualifying time of 11:19.73 and also ran the 800 meters and 1,600. Wyatt Scott took sixth place in the triple jump (32’11.75”) and sixth place in the 100 meters (12.98), while also participating in the 200 meters and long jump. Killian Blouin took sixth place in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”. Aiden Harig was seventh in the 400 meter hurdles (1:10.19) and also participated in the high jump, long jump, and discus. Other notable performances include Willem Light-Olson in the triple jump (29’10 1/2”), high jump (4’10”), and discus (61’7”); Gabe Sanchez in the 100 meters (13.85) and triple jump (26’3 ½”); Faham Murad in the 100 (14.08) and 200 (28.36); and Kaleb Vasquez in the shot put (29’6 ½”). Cazenovia would be home Wednesday for its regularseason league opener against Westhill.

Chittenango softball splits pair of games by Phil Blackwell

One valuable thing the Chittenango softball team learned during the April school break was that it could recover from a defeat with an emphatic performance. Having lost, 8-6, to East Syracuse Minoa last Monday afternoon, the Bears returned to the diamond 24 hours later and jumped all over Solvay on the way to a 16-1 victory. Chittenango struck for 10 runs in the top of the second inning and added five runs in the third, seeing Stephanie Huckabee single twice and earn four RBIs. Lauren Machan drove in three runs and matched Madison Wagner and Olivia Jackson by scoring three times. Avree Salce also had two RBIs. Against ESM, a 3-1 lead vanished when the Spartans erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, and the Bears could not quite rally. Still, Wagner went three-for-four and Lily Callahan got two RBIs. Anna Spencer also drove in a run. Brooke Kirkpatrick (three hits) and Sara Brefka (two RBIs) led ESM.

Caz girls lacrosse routs Mexico, Oswego by Phil Blackwell

Having split its first four games of the season, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team would climb above the .500 mark thanks to a pair of lopsided victories. The Lakers netted 14 goals in the first half of last Tuesday’s game against Mexico at Cazenovia College’s Christakos Field, eventually putting away the Tigers 18-4. Madison DeAngelis led the way thanks to her five goals and three assists. Charlie Prior scored three times, with Maren Smith getting two goals and two assists. Megan Kuhn landed a goal and four assists as Katie Rajkowski, Hadley Schug and Riley Knapp joined Smith in the two-goal column. Julia Reff contributed an assist. It was much the same at Mexico two days later, the Lakers steadily gaining control and by a 14-6 margin, handling the Buccaneers and improving its record to 4-2. Nine different Cazenovia players got on the board, with Smith as the anchor thanks to her five assists to go with a pair of goals. DeAngelis scored three times, with Rajkowski and Dali Dennison also finding the net twice. Kuhn put up one goal and two assists, with Prior, Schug, Reff and Cailtlyn Smithers also finding the net. Two big Onondaga High School League road games loom this week for Cazenovia, who would travel to Marcellus on Tuesday and Westhill on Thursday night.
