Parade Crawfish Festival returns May 7 prep By Ashley M. Casey Associate Editor

Chamber takes the reins of Memorial Day Parade By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer

Fred Kies, a village grocer and veteran of World War I, coordinated Memorial Day observances in Liverpool for an amazing 60 years, from 1918 to 1978. In 1979, Fred Wyker stepped up to fill Kies’ shoes to head up the parade committee at American Legion Post 188. Wyker, a veteran of World War II who served in France, helmed the Memorial Day observances here for four decades, well into the 21st century. After Wyker’s passing at age 94 in 2018, Post 188 Commander Ken Palmer and his volunteers carried on the annual tradition which was traditionally opened by a 9 a.m. ceremony with prayers, speeches, awards to local students and a somber recitation of the names of veterans who recently passed. Given its dwindling membership, however, Post 188 is no longer able to coordinate both the ceremony and the parade, and so the Greater Liverpool Chamber of Commerce has stepped up to carry the ball. “Anyone can be in the parade,” said Chamber Director Lucretia Hudzinski. “Ken at Post 188 is reaching out to some scholastic marching bands, and we’re signing up people who want to march or have their vehicles in the parade.” Over the years, parade participants have included Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, veterans, civic and fraternal groups. Village Trustee Dennis Hebert is assisting the chamber in coordinating the parade. Hudzinski encouraged those interested to call the chamber at 315-457-3895. “We’ll make sure to call back to confirm,” she said. “It should be a really fun time for everybody.” The ceremony is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Johnson Park, with the parade to follow, forming on Second Street, led as usual by a Liverpool Police cruiser. Marchers will head east toward Memorial Park which features a World War II-era cannon, then the parade will roll west on Oswego Street and north on Tulip Street toward Liverpool Cemetery at the corner of Fifth Street.

Operation Northern Comfort kicks off festival season in Syracuse with the return of the Crawfish Festival on May 7. “We’re back in Clinton Square, which is really exciting,” said Laurel Flanagan, CEO of the Liverpool-based nonprofit, which focuses on building projects for people in need. Last year’s Crawfish Festival was a takeout-only operation in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. The return to downtown Syracuse means greater visibility for Operation Northern Comfort’s major fundraiser. Flanagan said the organization is expecting as many as 7,000 attendees. Flanagan is hoping the weather works in the festival’s favor. “We’re always the first festival of the season, so it’s a little hit or miss,” she said. Festivalgoers will be able to feast on seafood, pizza, wine slushies and more from the event’s nearly 20 food trucks and stands. More than 50 crafters and other vendors have signed on as well. Families can enjoy magic shows, face painting and carnival games at the kids’ zone, and the mascot dance-off returns. ONC has also booked musical acts, including a tent for acoustic performers. As for COVID protocols, Flanagan is optimistic but prepared. “Last year we had masks and we had social distancing and we had hand sanitizer pump bottles everywhere. And then a week later they lifted the mandate so the other festivals didn’t have to [do all those preparations],” she said. “We can pivot on a dime now. We know how to do it.” Operation Northern Comfort is Crawfish

Plank Road Quilt Guild: ’Her Story’

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 29; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30 Cicero United Methodist Church, 8416 N. Main St. (Route 11) Traditionally, quilting has been a woman’s contribution to keeping her family warm and her home beautiful. Every quilt made is a record of a special time in their lives whether joyful or worry ridden or just ordinary day to day life. Recognizing the stories that go into the creation of a quilt is sometimes difficult because while quilting is an art form, the quilts were rarely signed or dated. What is “Her Story”? Shifting from history (his story), “Her Story” celebrates women who have promoted quilting. Historians like Ruby McKim, Barbara Brackman and Jinny Beyer have researched quilt patterns and have written books to preserve this information for generations to come. These women and many more will be showcased throughout the quilt show honoring their contributions. While there are men in the quilting world, there are many more women who have kept this skill alive. On display will be bed-sized quilts, throw-sized quilts, wall hangings, guild challenges, COVID quilts and miscellaneous items such as pillows and quilted bags. These pieces of art are all made by the Plank Road Quilt Guild members. A number of vendors will be available during the show with their booths filled with needed accessories, kits, threads, quilt patterns, fabric and quilting supplies. There will be a Tea Room and the Plank Road Boutique will be open to purchase fabrics, books and accessories at reduced

Raffle baskets will be on display to try your luck, and the biggest raffle will be the quilt. The raffle quilt “Bright Days” is a Dresden Plate design using Kaffe Fasset fabrics set on a black tone on tone background which makes the hand appliquéd Dresden Plates pop and spin. Kaffe Fasset (rhymes with “safe asset”) is an American-born designer who now resides in England. He is widely known for his colorful designs in decorative arts. Taking the traditional pattern of Dresden Plates and using these bright colorful fabrics gives appeal to the traditional and

modern quilting world. The border of flowers, leaves and vines is hand appliquéd. The “Bright Days” raffle quilt was created by Plank Road Quilt Guild members. It was machine quilted by Sally Mowers of Baldwinsville. It is truly a magnificent quilt that will go to one lucky winner. For more information, visit plankroadquiltguild.org.

Liverpool woman to be ordained as Episcopal priest The Right Rev. Dr. DeDe DuncanProbe, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York, will ordain Meredith Kadet Sanderson to the priesthood at 10 a.m. Easter Saturday, April 23, at the Episcopal Church of Saints Peter & John, 169 Genesee St. in downtown Auburn. The community is invited to attend the service in-person or online; please visit cnyepiscopal.org/ordination-sanderson for details. COVID-19 precautions will be in place. Sanderson is chief of staff and director of communications for the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York. Prior to joining the Diocese in 2015, she served as director of programs for Episcopal Charities of New York and as a fundraiser and data analyst with UNICEF USA in New York City. With husband Christopher Carter Sanderson, she is the parent of a preschooler and resides in Liverpool. Sanderson holds a master of divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and a bachelor of arts degree from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. She will begin her ministry as a priest with the people of Christ Episcopal Church, 25 N. Main St., Jordan, celebrating Holy Eucharist for the second Sunday of Easter at 10 a.m. April 24. She will also continue her role with the Dio-

cese of Central New York. Sanderson will be the first person under the age of 40 to be ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Central New York in several years — in a time when religious institutions are facing significant transitions due to the ongoing pandemic and changing attitudes toward religion. “I anticipate a lot of change in the years ahead! One of my favorite lines in scripture is Ephesians 3:20-21, which reminds us that the power of God within and among us can do ‘far more than all we can ask or imagine,’” Sanderson said when asked about her hopes for ministry. “God will always work through the Church and through Christian community — though the form that work takes now and in the future may be outside the bounds of what we can presently ‘ask or imagine.’” Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe, who oversees all the clergy in the 82 congregations of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York, commented on Sanderson’s journey ahead of her ordination. “Through her faithful commitment to Jesus’ Way of Love, inclusivity, and joyful optimism, Meredith has already touched the hearts of people throughout our diocesan community. With grateful hearts for our shared ministry, we joyously celebrate

Financial Literacy Month ends with Art shows budgeting workshop April 27 In every time and season, Seneca Savings has been dedicated to educating the community on making smart financial decisions. Yet April has a special place in the Seneca Savings team’s hearts. In 2004, Congress designated April as National Financial Literacy Month to raise awareness about how to save, earn, borrow, invest and protect your money wisely. This includes educating youth and instilling the financial skills and habits they need to build a secure future. Financial literacy is indeed focused on youth, but the Seneca Savings team believes it’s never too late to learn. “Financial literacy and advocacy is at the forefront of our efforts here at Seneca Savings and we’re thrilled to offer vital resources and supportive partnerships to our customers and community,” said Laurie Ucher, senior vice president of retail banking. “Right now more than ever, families and business owners are trying to find ways to be more efficient with their dollars and budget accordingly, using helpful tools and resources. That’s why we feel the month-long financial literacy series we’re offering should culminate with our ‘Budgeting for Financial Freedom’ [workshop].” The virtual workshop, which takes place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, will be led by Ucher along with special guests, Angelo Testani, senior vice president of commercial lending; Eric Morgan, mortgage loan officer; and Greg Boshart, program manager of Financial Quest. The bank’s impact to date with K-12 students is astonishing: 964 students have benefited from Seneca Savings’ financial education includ-

ONC focused more of its attention on smaller projects such as building ramps, fixing railings and landings, installing grab bars and building desks for kids who had to learn remotely in the first leg of the pandemic. “It shone a spotlight on how kids didn’t have at-home learning spaces,” Flanagan l

Seneca Savings has four branches including Baldwinsville, Liverpool, North Syracuse, and its newest branch in Bridgeport, with over 55,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide. Through substantial investments during the pandemic to meet customer needs including business owners, Seneca Savings now has a full, innovative suite of digital products and services. “We offer big bank technology with a local, personalized team of people who are truly committed to getting to know you and your family, your business, your goals,” said Joseph Vitale, CEO. “Helping you get from here to there, whether it’s a home equity line of credit, a refinance, a small business loan or a commercial real estate mortgage, it’s important that customers know we’re streamlined, seamless, and efficient in making local decisions right here in our branches in helping you get from here… to there. Wherever you’re at, we’re with you… for life’s journeys.” Banks can’t predict the future or make your finances bullet proof. But as a local, community bank, Seneca Savings is committed to doing the next best thing by providing informed advice on budgeting for your family or your business for your financial prosperity. Financial Literacy Month in April is a simple yet powerful step in that direction. To learn more visit senecasavings.com. Media coverage of the desk project boosted awareness of Operation Northern Comfort’s services. “The publicity we received for the desk initiative really raised the profile of Operation Northern Comfort,” Flanagan said. “We had three requests last week for ramps.” While ONC is happy to help people in need, building materials are not cheap, es-

This year’s festival is critical for us,” Flanagan said. “We’re hoping the support will come from the community so we can continue to do the work that we do.” In addition to the desks and small home improvement projects, Operation Northern Comfort has built sandboxes and ramps for the puppy play yard at HumaneCNY, built shelving for InterFaith Works’ refugee reset-

Stay focused

As spring gradually settles into Central New York and with the summer months just ahead, it is likely there will be more people on the road out for day trips, longer vacations, a leisurely afternoon drive, or any number of other reasons. And while it should go without saying, being behind the wheel of any vehicle is a great responsibility that while we might take it for granted, we also need to stay focused and alert to what is all around us from other vehicles to pedestrians to possible road hazards and even animals dashing across the road. According to an organization known as End Distracted Driving, Enddd.org, distracted driving is any activity that takes away from the responsibilities we have while operating a motor vehicle. According to Enddd.org, there were 36,096 fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2019, which represented a 2% decrease from 2018 fatalities of 36,835. While it was anticipated that with people driving less in 2020 this downward trend would continue, Enddd.org said through November of 2020 numbers indicate 38,370 people had lost their lives in crashes. According to Enddd.org, 7% of all fatal crashes in 2019 were distraction-related resulting in 3,142 lives lost, an increase of 9.9% over 2018 when 2,858 lives were lost due to distracted driving. Enddd.org shared some other statistics worth noting, including eight percent of fatal crashes, 15 percent of injury crashes, and 14 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2018 were reported as distraction-affected crashes. About 400,000 were injured and 2,841 killed as a result of distraction-affected crashes. About 1 of every 5 people killed by distracted drivers in 2018 were not in vehicles-they were walking, riding bikes, or otherwise outside of vehicles. Distracted driving crashes are underreported and the NSC estimates that cell phone use alone accounted for 27% of 2015 car crashes. Research conducted by telematics and behavioral analytics company Cambridge Mobile Telematics shows distracted driving occurring in more than 36 percent of trips across the United States. The fatal crash rate for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 20 and over. Driver distraction is responsible for more than 58% of teen crashes. According to the CDC drivers aged 1519 were more likely to be distracted than drivers aged 20 and older, among drivers in crashes where a death occurred. Nine percent of all teens who died in crashes were killed in distraction-affected crashes. According to the organization there are several types of distraction including manual distractions which are those where you move your hands from the wheel. Visual distractions are those where you focus your eyes away from the road. A cognitive distraction is when you’re mind wanders away from the task of driving. Texting involves all three types of distraction. According to some research people are as impaired when they drive and talk on a cell phone as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%. Enddd.org also shared that cell phone users are 5.36 times more likely to get into an accident than undistracted drivers. Text messaging for commercial drivers increases the risk of crash or near-crash by 23 times. Sending or reading a text message takes your eyes off the road for about five seconds, long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. This is something drivers are aware of, according to Enddd.org, well over 84% of drivers recognize the danger from cell phone distractions and find it “unacceptable” that drivers text or send an email while driving. Nevertheless, 36% of these same people admit to having read or sent a text message or email while driving in the previous month. It is also believed that teens whose parents drive distracted are two to four times as likely to also drive distracted. To learn more visit Enddd.org.

Should eye rolls be reserved for those that can’t live without a cell phone attached to their ear - in the supermarket, the doctor’s office, church, walking down the street, in labor and delivery, in the classroom and yes, in the car? Would a shoulder shrug be the reaction to language formerly reserved for stevedores who frequented bars on the waterfront and now heard from the lips of kids in middle school who resent having to put their cell phones away? Should we designate an array of hand and finger signals for those that malign their opponents during election campaigns rather than demonstrate how they, as our elected representatives, will make our lives better? Should we save some of the more colorful of those finger signals for a smugness that looks the other way as our culture coarsens and we accept school violence as inevitable? Perhaps, in the latter instance, and in some of the former, a frown is an understatement of our chagrin. Maybe we should invent something more appropriate. Botox may relax the frown muscles, but what relaxes our indignation at the faults of our culture? Maybe the best reaction comes from the space between our ears and shows itself in actions that remedy the situation rather than reacting to them. And after the remedy, a successful one: Give yourself a “hand”…. clapping with a big smile on your face. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. American High under discussion

The village planning board will continue its discussion about neighbors’ recent complaints about American High’s Academy at Syracuse Studios at 800 Fourth St, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 25, at the village hall, 310 Sycamore St. More than 40 neighbors turned out for last month’s board meeting at which they described bothersome truck traffic, disturbing noise, late-night lighting and littering.

On April 30, the Golden Bee Bookshop plans to relocate from its spot in the Village Mall down the street to a larger and more prominent storefront at 324 First St. The last day in April is designated as Independent Bookstore Day, so owner Casey Rose Frank chose that day for her grand reopening. “I’m still in the process of working out the finer details,” she said, “but there will be giveaways, special promotions, and a ribbon-cutting at our opening;” goldenbeebookshop.com.

Homeowners beware

To the editor: It appears that we homeowners have lost the security of our homes. The proof is: That on Feb. 26, 2022, two teenagers broke and entered my home at 10-12 Sunset Terrace, Baldwinsville, during the dark hours at 6:41 p.m. Village police were called, apprehended the girls, spent several hours drawing up the paperwork necessary to charge them and submitted them

Perry Noun is the former executive director of the Northeastern NY PGA as well as a competitive amateur golfer and winner of the New York State Super Senior Amateur Championship. Perry Noun can be heard on “Tee Time With The Pronoun” on... News Radio 570 WSYR and 106.9FM.

Tom Watson - Once in a rut, what’s a golfer to do? Tom used to preach that, “it’s how you rebound from adversity that measures a player”. Dr. Valiante says Tom was referring to “cognition and mental awareness”. * Jordon Speith - In 2015 Jordan was acclaimed as the Best Golfer for the Foreseeable Future. From 2017 to 2021 his erratic driver and shaky putter put him in a bad place. “It’s just one of those things where you’ve just got to block out the noise…stay the course…and believe in yourself. * How about Rory Mcllroy ranked # 1 in 2012. By 2013 he called his “Golf brain dead”. * Forgot this about Tiger - From 2013 until August 2015, he had more “missed cuts” (10) than made cuts (7). He also didn’t have a Top 10 finish. In 2004, Dr. Valiante completed a study where he interviewed 50 of the top golfers in the world. “One of the questions I asked was…When you look back on your career, when you finally found ‘it’, from darkness to light, is there a pattern to the problem solving? ALL OF THEM: Nick Price, David Toms, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Vijay Singh - they said yes, FUNDAMENTALS! There was: GRIP, POSTURE AND BALL POSITION”. MORAL OF THE STORY: Valiante says, “Think of the word discipline. What is the etymology, what is the genesis? It’s a student. Self discipline is being a student of oneself ”. MY TAKEAWAY: PATIENCE & FUNDAMENTALS When you THINK you are in a “slump”, you might be able to recover. When you BELIEVE you are in a “slump”…. YOU ARE! Solution: GRIP, POSTURE AND BALL POSITION….It works every time. The Top 50 players in the world said so.

Everyone who plays the game of golf has had to deal with two five letter words that have plagued us since the beginning of our golf careers. One is the word “ shank”, which usually is short lived and we will deal with in a future article. The other is the word “slump” which can affect us for weeks, months or perhaps even years. The word “slump” does not discriminate between a 36 handicapper or a +5 handicap player (PGA Tour level). It is simply inevitable that we will eventually be tagged with the word “slump”. Rather than bore you with my personal “slumps” or amateur “slumps” in general, let’s investigate how the word “slump” affects PGA Tour players and how they have had to deal with it. Dr. Gio Valiante is one of the most prominent sports psychologists in the world. He has worked with many of golf ’s top players, including Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, Sean O’Hair, Davis Love lll and Alexis Thompson. Over the past decade his clients have won dozens of championships and he has become the winningest sport psychologist on the PGA Tour during that time. In 2010, The Golf Channel crowned Dr. Valiante… Guru of the Year. His book…Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game, is a standard in golf psychology. He believes the breach in confidence is best cured by a return to the fundamentals and becoming “a student of oneself ”. He describes a “slump” this way, “Suddenly, without warning, the once accurate drives find more rough than fairway. The automatic 2-3 foot putts won’t fall…the hole repelling the ball like an irritating insect. Doubt creeps in. The water faucet of the mind shifts from a controllable drip to an unmanageable monsoon, cascading the brain with negativity. It’s insular”. Now that’s the most brilliant definition of a “slump” I have ever read. Examples: * Brandt Snedeker - After winning the 2015 AT&T, ending a 19 month winless drought said, “The funny thing about golf is when you’re playing bad, you never think you’re going to play good and when your playing good, you never think you’re going to play bad. The game of golf is not easy. I don’t care who you are. Out here everyone’s had their down times. Even the best players in the world go through it. You just have to keep fighting.” * Davis Love lll - When he was in a slump, he remembered a simple mantra his father taught him….” Try less hard”.

providers.” Lori A. Schakow, executive director of Child Solutions CNY said, “I sincerely appreciate Senator Mannion for championing an increased investment for child care in the New York State budget. The state’s commitment of $7 billion over the next four years will more than double the current investment for child care. The $1.8 billion investment this year will increase the eligibility for a child care subsidy to assist working families pay for child care. The new budget also includes $340 million for grants focused on stabilizing the child care workforce, and $50 million for capital projects. This historic investment in the child care system will make access to highquality child care more affordable for all children in our community.”

Are golf slumps real? Dr. “Gio” says…”they are real”!

immediately.” Childcare functions as a social and learning environment for many students. It is a productive and much-needed early introduction to the classroom. Children have opportunities to exercise small acts of independence through interactions with peers which helps them develop important social skills, such as sharing, taking turns, negotiating, and self-control. It helps them to foster relationships, to learn social etiquette, and allows them to learn from controlled interactions with peers. The average cost for a toddler in daycare is $9,000. This, coupled with the fact that most areas in Central New York qualify as childcare deserts, is detrimental to families and the regional economy. The $100M is for areas of New York State in the most need for expanded childcare options with $70 million going toward opening new childcare programs and $30 million to ex-

Senator John W. Mannion (D-Geddes) today highlighted the state budget’s historic $1.1 billion childcare investment during a visit to the True North Center for Children in Clay. Senator Mannion also strongly urged Central New York childcare providers and entrepreneurs to submit applications to a new $100 million state fund to expand or launch new businesses. “Addressing the inadequacy of quality and affordable childcare was a top priority for the Senate in budget negotiations and I’m pleased to deliver this historic $1.1 billion investment for Central New York families and childcare providers,” Mannion said. “There is also $100 million available right now for childcare providers to expand or start a business. I am determined to make sure that Central New York gets its fair share of these resources and anyone who needs assistance with the application process should contact my office

OBITUARIES Marian Berry Loftus, 98

Helped start first nursery school in Skaneateles Marian Berry Loftus passed away April 4, 2022, having just celebrated her 98th birthday with her family 10 days before. Born and raised in St. Louis, she was the eldest of seven children. Her life took a turn when her mother died when Marian was a teenager and she became the “mother” of her younger siblings. She attended the RosatiKain High School in St. Louis, where she graduated top of her class. Marian met her husband, David, in St. Louis, where he was attending the St. Louis University School of Dentistry. After David graduated, they married, spent a few years in Brooklyn while David finished service in the United States Navy, and then moved to Skaneate-

les where they spent their entire lives. Marian’s greatest joy was raising her family of 10 children. The low point of her life was losing her daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) in a boating accident in 1966. Despite a busy home life, she made several significant contributions to the Skaneateles community. Working with a few of her good friends, she helped start the first nursery school in Skaneateles, which still exists today. She was also a founding member of the Skaneateles Vincent House Guild. Her faith was very important to her and she was a life-long communicant at St. Mary’s of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Skaneateles. As part of her religious duty, she served many terms as president of the Stella Maris Retreat Guild. For many years, she also made dinners for the men at Unity Acres in Orwell, N.Y., and worked annually as a captain of a

team going door to door to collect money for the American Cancer Society. Marian was predeceased by her husband, David; daughter, Elizabeth, and five of her siblings. She is survived by her children David Loftus Jr. (Jane), Pamela Pidhirny (John), Jo Ann Loftus, Mary Ann Loftus, Margaret Newland (Fergus), Jon Loftus, M.D. (Tayloe), Philip Loftus, Amy Kimm (Todd ), Mark Loftus (Linh) and sister, Pat Berry. She also has 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Services were held Saturday, April 9, at St. Mary of the Lake Church in Skaneateles at 10 a.m. For much of her life, Marian asked her family to make contributions to the many charities she supported instead of giving her gifts. Please help continue this tradition and in lieu of flowers, make a donation to SAVES in Skaneateles,

Liverpool tennis team beats West Genesee 5-2 by Phil Blackwell

It proved quite a good debut for the Liverpool boys tennis team in the 2022 season. Amid sunny, windy conditions, the Warriors went to Camillus to face West Genesee last Tuesday afternoon and, taking all three points in singles, was able to beat the Wildcats 5-2. Cole Potrzeba claimed a forfeit, while in the two contested matches Evan Miller shut out John Diem 6-0, 6-0 and Justin Barrett got his own 6-0, 6-0 win over Justin Palmieri. WG countered with two points in

doubles, one of them a three-set battle where William Baduf and James Welch, two games from victory, could not hold on in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat to Noah Ruston and Joe Paoli. But Brett Ritter and Mason Pinchin won in straight sets over Sam Barth and Taylor Young 6-4, 6-2, while Jimmy Bul and Aydan Presley got yet another 6-0, 6-0 win, this one over Jonah Hanlon and Cooper Corcoran. Liverpool is not playing again until an April 27 showdown with CiceroNorth Syracuse, who has non-league matches against Central Square and East Syracuse Minoa late this week.

Against defending sectional Division I champion Fayetteville-Manlius Green in last Wednesday’s opener at Hickory Hills, the Warriors had solid scores, yet still lost 163-189 to the Hornets. Jewelyana Daniels shot a 42 for nine holes, ty-

Liverpool would fare better against West Genesee a day later at Westvale, doing enough in warm, windy conditions to secure a 226-244 victory over the Wildcats. Daniels, with a 50, edged out WG’s Sophia Simiele (51) for individual honors. Turck shot a 55, with Fenwick earning a 59 and Aija McIntyre picking up a 62. C-NS, Liverpool track stars at Westhill meet by Phil Blackwell

Before they entered the heart of their respective schedules, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool track and field teams would get a glimpse of each other at last Tuesday’s Westhill Spring Break Invitational. And both sides would emerge with winning performances, especially the Northstars, whose girls team claimed several events, including two from Lilly Capria. In the triple jump, Capria’s top attempt of 33 feet beat out the 32’10” from Tully’s Emma Byrne, with Ava Schiff seventh. Then, in the high jump, Capria was the only competitor to clear 5 feet as Grace Murray (4’6”) was sixth. The Northstars’ 4x400 relay quartet of Kate Putman, Marissa Navarra, Grace Murray and Hannah Boyle went 4:06.61, more than 16 seconds ahead of Baldwinsville’s 4:23.37. C-NS also won the 3x100 shuttle hurdles, finishing in 55.48 seconds to Liverpool’s second-place 57.10. The boys Warriors were fourth in the 3x110 shuttle hurdles in 1:01.83. In the invitational 400-meter dash, Kate Putman was second in 58.75 seconds and Hannah Boyle third in 1:00.45. Marissa Navarra was fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 5:00.04. Liverpool broke through in the girls 100meter dash, where Sophia Jarosz won in 13.10 seconds to edge the 13.18 from C-NS’s Jaydin Mackey. Allie Cary added a shot put victory with a throw of 32’9” that beat teammate Janea Hamilton-Brown’s second-place 32’2 ½” as the Northstars’ Cha’Nya Jones finished sixth. Mia Wright was third in 13.23 for the Warriors as Mackey took third in the 200-meter dash in 27.02 seconds, edging Wright’s 27.14

in fourth place. Jarosz, Lena Young, Sophie Hoy and Emily Aiello were third in the 4x400 in 4:25.38. Beatrize Gugol went 32.67 seconds in the 200-meter hurdles, getting third place as Kaitlyn Burt (33.47) was sixth. Addison Ziegler was fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:32.30 and Hoy fifth (14’7”) in the long jump. To win the high jump for Liverpool, Bennett Robb had to clear 5’8” with fewer misses than C-NS’s Trevon Walker, who settled for second place. The Warriors’ Michael Purvis finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:59.22, trailing only the 10:28.97 from Pulaski’s Luke Tighe. Joe Guindy was third in the discus, heaving it 98’7” to go with a sixth (38’10 ½”) in the shot put. Ryan Hagan took third in the invitational 3,200-meter run in 9:17.30, with Nick Dailey fifth in the 200 hurdles in 29.03 seconds. C-NS had Gavin McAllister win the pole vault, clearing 10 feet, with Liverpool’s Declan Fahy fourth at 8’6”. Carlton Garnes went 20’2” in the long jump, second to the 20’10” from JamesvilleDeWitt’s Caleb Smith as Liverpool’s Ny’Quez Madison was fourth with 19’3”. Then, in the triple jump, Garnes went 41’3”, just behind Baldwinsville’s Owen Weaver (41’7”) as Trevon Walker was fifth with 37’6” and Anthony Johnson sixth with 36’10”. Ashton Murdock gave C-NS a third-place time of 4:46.22 in the 1,600-meter run, with the Warriors’ Austin Ziegler sixth in 4:50.26. Gavin McAllister was fifth in the 800 in 2:03.45.

History Mystery North

Do you know anything about this picture? By Dorothy Heller Clay Historian This week’s question: The children in this photo attended a school that was unique for its time. Do you know the name of the school and what set it apart? Do you recognize any of the students? Last week’s answer: Pictured are the infamous Melvin brothers at an early age. Standing is Myron S. Melvin and seated is his brother Crandall Melvin, four years younger. It is wellknown that they started a law firm of Melvin and Melvin on Jan. 1, 1921). Following is the history that led to this event. The first Melvin to arrive in America was Patrick Melvin from Scotland. Landing in Massachusetts in the early 1700s, it is said he brought with him the canny Scottish knack of doing business and making money. He stayed a short time in Melvin Village in New Hampshire and then went on to Melvin Mills on the

Warner River, where his two sons established a grist mill, woodworking shop and a village. Twenty-two ancestors of Myron and Crandall fought in the Revolutionary War. Around 1850, Jewett Melvin settled in the Woodard part of Clay, where he became a farmer. His son Ansel, the father of Myron and Crandall, also became a farmer and moved with his wife, May Soule, to a 50-acre farm in Euclid where his sons were born. Ansel was a hard-working man who grew tobacco, potatoes and fodder for his 15 cows. He bought and sold cattle, pigs and tobacco. During the panic of 1890, he bought very cheaply all the case tobacco he could get and stored it in his farm buildings. After the panic, he sold it at a handsome price. He also taught school and was justice of the peace of Clay. The Melvin brothers learned from their parents to buy something if it is cheap, to work hard and to be thrifty and to put their dollars to work to make more dollars. They were also taught that “early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” From Euclid the family moved to a 200-acre farm on Buckley Road where Ansel became justice of the peace of the town of Salina and later a councilman when Salina became a first-class town. From observing the trials conducted

before their father, the brothers decided they would become lawyers. The Melvin enterprise expanded. There was more farming done, more wheeling and dealing. The Melvin boys rose at 3:30 a.m. to milk the 35 cows as the peddler arrived at 4:45 a.m. The Melvins got 2 ½ cents a quart and it was delivered retail by the peddler for 5 cents a quart. After milking the cows and having breakfast at 5 a.m., the brothers would start for school, which began at 8 a.m., returning home to milk again at 4 p.m. One day while Myron was walking home from school, he met a man who owned a lot with a shack on it and the man offered to sell it to him. Myron bought it for $100 and shortly after sold it for $300. That was the beginning. By 1964, the Melvins owned at least 15 farms in Onondaga County and thousands of acres in the Adirondacks plus other types of real estate, from houses to office buildings. The brothers both attended Syracuse University and Syracuse Law School, joining law firms when they graduated. Crandall joined the 317 Field Artillery during World War I. When he got out in 1919 he joined a firm, but by 1921 both he and Myron found themselves alone, so that’s when they formed the Law Firm of Melvin and Melvin. Each of them had a son who joined the firm. When Crandall became president of the Merchants Bank on April 4, 1938, he operated the bank and Myron operated the law office. Crandall became chairman of the bank board in 1963. Both Myron and

Crandall held the office of president of the Onondaga County Bar Association and became members of the New York State Bar and American Bar Associations. It is said that the brothers Melvin had the most to do with the development of Onondaga County. During the depression in the 1930s, Crandall headed up (for free) the Onondaga County Emergency Work Bureau, directing the efforts of unemployed men who worked on county projects for 40 cents an hour. He had them build Onondaga Lake Park, Highland Park, Pratts Falls Park and Jordan Park. Plus, he had them build county roads and clean up all the little abandoned cemeteries in the county. He was a moving force in the Onondaga Historical

Association. Closer to home, for many years the brothers represented the town of Clay and other local municipalities. They truly believed in living as they did on the farm ending with early to bed, etc. Myron’s son Merle is 93 today.
