SENIORS HONORED: Cazenovia High School boys track and field seniors were recognized prior to last Wednesday’s meet with Solvay, the Lakers’ last home meet of the regular season at Buckley-Volo Field. Cazenovia went on to defeat the Bearcats 118-22.

T

he Cazenovia varsity boys track and field team hosted Solvay last Wednesday and won decisively 118-22., over the Bearcats. It was the final home meet of the season, and there was a pre-meet ceremony recognizing the thirteen seniors who competed at the Buckley-Volo Field track for the last time: Elijah Clement, Blaze Dannen, Joseph Diana, Cassidy Gilmore, Cooper Hughes, Thomas Insel, Andrew Kent, Andrew Lee, Willem Light-Olson, Dan Millson, Faham Murad, Michael Senehi, and Quinn Smith. Cool, rainy weather made for slow times and short distances, which made the personal records that were broken all the more impressive. Top performances were by Connor

Frisbie and Killian Blouin, who both set personal records with sectional qualifying efforts, Frisbie winning the 110 meter hurdles in 18.7 seconds and Blouin clearing 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault. Gilmore continued gaining momentum coming back from injury, winning the 1,600 meters in a season-best and sectional qualifying time of 5:07.5. Other individual event winners were Kent in the 200 meters (24.5) and 400 meters (52.5), Frisbie in the high jump (5’ 0”) and triple jump (34’ 9 1/2”), J.P. Hoak in the 100 meters (12.1) and shot put (32’ 8”), Senehi in the 400 hurdles (1:07.4), Hughes in the 800 (2:17.3), Branden McColm in the 3,200 (11:40.8), and Clement in the discus (102’ 4”) A baton drop disqualified the Lakers in the 4x100 meter relay; however the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays took first

place. The 4x400 team of Hughes, Kaplan, Millson, and Kent went 4:10.8. Hughes did double duty on the 4x800 team with McColm, Senehi, and Will Austin running 9:24.6. Dannen took 23 seconds off his 3,200 meter time to set a new personal record of 13:55.8 and take third place. Others delivering personal record performances included: Jaden Kaplan’s 55.1 in the 400 sprint and 54-foot discus throw; Light-Olden clearing 5 feet in the high jump; Miles Weiler with a throw of 32 feet in the shot put; Aidan Harig (20.7) in the 110 hurdles; Lee (26.6) and Trey Thornton (30.8) in the 200; Sam Wilcox (1:04.8) in the 400, J.D. Dolley (2:23.3) in the 800 and Will Schimer (1:13.8) and Henn Mongeaus (1:21.3) in the 400 hurdles.

Meet the Cazenovia School Board candidates By kate hill Staff writer

This spring, three individuals are running for two seats on the Cazenovia Central School District Board of Education (BOE). The seats up for election are currently held by Jennifer Parmalee and Kathy Hahn. While Hahn will be vacating her position, Parmalee is seeking re-election. Also running for the school board are newcomers Jack Sessler and Judith Hight. Each of the candidates responded to the following questions from the Cazenovia Republican: - What is your background? - Why are you running? - What do you see as the most important issues facing the district and how would you address them? Their responses (300-word limit) are printed below.

Judith Hight

I have lived in Cazenovia since 1999, and have two sons, a junior and a senior, who have been fortunate to attend school here. I am excited to be running for a seat on the Board of Education. I am the owner of a retail wine business, here in Cazenovia, called J.S. Hight & Sons. My professional experience includes a career in human services, where I helped develop educational and work opportunities for people with disabilities. To me, the work that was most gratifying was developing in-

terventions for students with emotional and behavioral concerns that improved their academic outcomes, and reduced the incidence of difficult behaviors. I quickly learned that kids were not successful without an effective partnership between educators, the students, and their families. Although our district has many strengths, I am passionate about improving those relationships. I believe that every family should have a place at the table. As a parent of a child with special needs, and another who is considered “typical”, I know that the education process can be difficult to navigate. I am committed to improving the channels of communication, to fostering strong and effective partnerships, and advocating to ensure that all students have access to the resources and supports to achieve their goals. In a post-pandemic environment, I am mindful of the work that needs to be done to get our students back on track academically, to address the increase in mental health concerns, and to protect their health and safety. I believe that public education is the foundation for strong communities. I am hoping you will give me the opportunity to give back to a community I love. I welcome your questions and concerns. Please feel free to call me at 508.612.7042, or drop by my shop at 58 Albany St.

Jennifer Parmalee

I serve as the Deputy Commissioner and Director of Community Services for the Onondaga County Department of Children and Family Services. Prior to this position, the Director of School Based Initiatives

for the same Department and before that as the Director of Child and Youth Services with the Onondaga County Department of Mental Health. I have significant experience working with schools solving complex problems. I am passionate about education and supporting all students in the district. I have been working to address complex challenges in multiple school districts since 2008 and have a reputation as a national leader in the area mental health and school collaboration. I have dedicated my life to the education of young people in the most safe and supporting environments possible. My work is devoted to supporting the many school districts in Onondaga County in addressing the mental health crisis our youth are currently facing. I would like to offer that experience and passion to Cazenovia School district. If elected, my approach will be to engage all stakeholders (teachers, parents, administrators, support staff, students, staff, board, etc.) in open and honest dialogue to ensure the best possible decisions. The top three issues the district faces and how I would address them: - I will support the effort of the district to achieve access to the highest quality curriculum and instruction for all children through advocacy, policy development and financial considerations through the budget process. - I will support the implementation of the Strategic Plan through required advocacy, policy development and financial considerations through the budget process. - I will work to ensure a healthy financial position given the decreased funding and adBOE l Page 3

On May 9, the Cazenovia Town Board approved significant revisions to the town’s solar law by adopting “A Local Law to Amend Chapter 165 (Zoning) of the Town Code of the Town of Cazenovia with Respect to the Town of Cazenovia Solar Regulations.” The local law is intended to enable the town to address potential negative impacts of largescale solar projects by providing additional protections related to agricultural resources, town roadways, decommissioning, and uniform solar guidelines for such projects. The proposed local law would also provide clarification regarding the requirements of the Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) Agreements and Host Community Benefit Agreements associated with such uses. The first draft of the proposed local law was introduced on Feb. 14, 2022, following an in-depth review of the current solar law and regulations by the Town of Cazenovia Solar Subcommittee. A public hearing on the proposed law was conducted on March 14. As a result of the public hearing and written comments submitted to the town, the board decided to revise and amend the proposed local law to provide better clarification as to access road permeability and the allowable height for commercial solar facility panels and fencing, to require annual inspection of commercial solar facilities, and to make other changes. During its April 11 regular monthly meeting, the board sought public input on the revised and amended version. After hearing from the public, the board adopted a resolution stating that it would further revise and amend the draft law by removing a sentence relating to town-owned properties to ensure that every project must be reviewed and approved by the town planning board and zoning board of appeals (ZBA). The resolution also set a public hearing as to the enactment of the further revised and amended draft local law for the May 9 regular monthly meeting. During the final public hearing, the board received input from Dave Eilers, who commended the solar subcommittee for its work, particularly on the law’s site plan review provisions. After the board unanimously voted to adopt the local law, Town Attorney John Langey explained that the law would be filed at some point the following day, at which time the town’s moratorium on commercial freestanding solar photovoltaic systems would be lifted. Langey also noted that Cazenovia has at least one pending solar application that may proceed and that other towns he represents are currently seeing “94-c” large-scale (25 megawatts or larger) solar projects. “There is at least a couple right here in Madison County,” he said. “One of them is over 50 megawatts and there might even be a bigger one that’s on its way, [but] not in Cazenovia for now. I feel like the town is [now] a little more prepared to handle these larger projects that are coming our way.” The full text of the adopted local law is on file in the clerk’s office at the Town of Cazenovia Town Offices and may be viewed during normal business hours, Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Meet Cazenovia Public Library’s new director By kate Hill Staff writer

In March 2022, Alyssa Ali took over as director of the Cazenovia Public Library & Museum (CPL) following the retirement of Betsy Kennedy, who led the library since 1983 and served on its staff since 1979. Ali, who worked at CPL previously, has rejoined the institution after serving multiple libraries over the last several years. “The Cazenovia Public Library Board of Trustees is happy to welcome Alyssa Ali back to the library as its new director,” said Kaleb Wilson, president of the board. “. . . Her experiences and professional growth will be instrumental in leading the library out of the pandemic and into the rest of this decade and beyond. Her institutional and industry knowledge will be imperative to the library’s mission during this transition time. She has already started the process of enacting her vision and there will be exciting changes coming over the next several months. I invite the public to stop by and introduce yourself to Alyssa if you have not yet.” Ali, who grew up in Canastota, said her first job was shelving books as a page at the Canastota Public Library. She worked at the library all through college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Le Moyne. “At the time, I wanted to be a forensic pathologist,” Ali recalled. “I had to make a choice for grad school — [either] go for science and

stop working at the library or go get a master’s in library science.” She ultimately decided to pursue a master’s degree in library and information science from the Syracuse University School of Information Studies. Ali continued working at Canastota Public Library and eventually got a job as assistant director of CPL, where she worked for five years before being appointed head librarian at Bryant & Stratton College in Syracuse. Ali then served as a youth services librarian at the Manlius Library until her husband’s job brought her to Oregon for a year. After the couple returned to the area in April 2020, Ali took over as director of the Maxwell Memorial Library in Camillus. When Kennedy announced her retirement from CPL, Ali was unsure of whether she wanted to apply for the position. “I loved Maxwell and felt I had many projects I’d started [and] wanted to see through,” she said. “I decided to apply because I loved working here so much, I love the staff, and the community as a whole. It felt right to try and come back so I could be a part of that again. Cazenovia is so different from other libraries I’ve worked in; what other library has a museum, a mummy, an archive, an art gallery, tutoring, and so much more all in one?” Ali returned to CPL on March 14, 2022 and worked with Kennedy until her official retirement on March 17. “It was lovely catching up with her and seeing firsthand all the library has accomplished

since I was last part of it,” Ali said. The new director said she envisions a future in which the library, museum, and archives remain integral parts of the Cazenovia community. “I see us beginning to offer the type of programs the community will find engaging and valuable,” she said. “COVID had all libraries pressing pause on this, and the staff and I are excited to start offering things to the community again and getting patrons back in the building. My favorite time of day here is story time, when caregivers and children come in and fill the library with excitement, fun, and laughter.” According to Ali, the transition has been going smoothly thanks in large part to the “kind, supportive, and understanding” staff and the willingness of the CPL Board of Trustees to embrace the change in leadership. “Alyssa’s support of the staff, our programs and projects, and future goals has made the transition seamless and has maintained the foundation upon which the library can thrive and be the wonderful community resource it is,” said CPL Assistant Director and Archives Coordinator Elisha Davies. Both Davies and CPL Children’s Librarian Jenna Wright-Martin worked with Ali previously and said they are excited about the fresh perspective, enthusiastic energy, and ideas she has brought to her new role. “She is taking great care in getting to know the staff, the community, and the library’s collections,” added Wright-Martin. “It is evi-

I am a 2003 Graduate of Cazenovia. I moved back to raise my family in 2011 after graduating from Williams College in Massachusetts and living in Buffalo and Syracuse for four years. My wife and I have three children who will be in grades 5, 3 and K next year. I’ve served on and currently serve on several Boards locally including the Cazenovia Public Library, the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Cazenovia Community Preschool (currently Secretary) and the Cazenovia Community Foundation (currently Treasurer). Professionally, I am a Senior Vice President and Lead Commercial Lender for Berkshire Bank in East Syracuse. I am running to give back to a school that has done so much for me, my family and my community. I will help the school continue and expand its commitment to excellence. I will also help ensure that CSD continues to provide the highest quality education for our students and parents, a rewarding and meaningful workplace for our talented staff, and by doing that, provide great value for the taxpayers that I will represent. We need to ensure that CSD has the ability and commitment to meet each student where they are. My wife and I chose to move back and raise our family here in part because of the incredible economic and social diversity our district has. I firmly believe that it is one of the biggest assets of our community. I also acknowledge that it drives a broad spectrum of needs for our student body and for our staff. Supporting

OPINION

The voices we cherish T hey would not leave. Not until the legend himself stepped out on the ice. True, the Buffalo Sabres’ season was over. Despite a dramatic comefrom-behind overtime win over Chicago, the Sabres were missing the playoffs again, so why would anyone stick around one moment more than absolutely necessary? Well, they had to see the man one more time. Not a player, or a coach, but an announcer, one whose voice they had heard for half a century chronicle the ups and downs of their hometown team. Rick Jeanneret – or RJ, as the Sabres faithful call him – was finally retiring. As he said himself, his spirit was still strong, but numerous ailments made continuing the job too

difficult. Having announced one last Buffalo victory in “Oooooovertime”, as he would put it, he signed off, everyone around him fighting back tears as he left the booth. Except the fans wouldn’t leave until he took a curtain call on the ice. So, escorted by a pair of Sabres players, RJ went to the ice, heard the roars one more time, and shook hands with every other player in blue and gold, the appropriate ending for a Buffalo sports institution. Even from afar, and as a person who rarely shows that kind of emotion, I could feel the eyes welling up, too, as much for the symbolism of the moment as for the facts of it. This was not the first time an announcer received a long and celebrat-

ed farewell. Ernie Harwell got it after regaling Detroit Tigers fans for most of his lifetime. Vin Scully richly earned every tribute thrown at him when he finally stepped away from the mike at Dodger Stadium. Why is it that we cherish these announcers in a way we don’t even do with players? Probably because athletes, even the best ones, arrive and depart the scene, but the voices calling their games can stay for generations. The cliché “soundtrack of our lives” perfectly fits this phenomenon. For certain fan bases, the link to their happiest and saddest moments is the people who gave them the first draft of history. And that applied to Rick Jeanneret. He arrived in Buffalo in the second year of the Sabres’ exis-

tence and never left, so its entire history is reflected in the fluctuation of his voice – descriptive, highvolume at times, ecstatic, energetic, and totally unforgettable. RJ saw (through the fog) Rene Robert score in the 1975 Stanley Cup final, most of Gil Perrault’s 500-plus goals, Pat “Lala-la-la-la-LaFontaine”, the excellence of Dominik Hasek, the joy of the “May Day!” victory in 1993 over the hated Bruins, the foot in the crease in 1999. Yet there were also the everyday pleasures, all those times RJ got into a round of fisticuffs, often involving future broadcast partner Rob Ray, and every time a shot floated off the ice, found the net and it was “Top shelf where Momma hides the cookies!” All of that is past his-

tory now. It’s difficult to imagine any announcer, no matter how good or how beloved, staying with any franchise for 30 years, much less the 51 that RJ logged through a string of delightful Buffalo winters. Part of it is simply the evolution of media. What was once a radio-only medium evolved into television, and now the trend is toward streaming services. It’s almost impossible to imagine the same kind of tribal, parochial loyalties to particular play-by-play voices that we’ve seen before. This was part of what made RJ’s last season so particularly emotional. Back on April 1 (no fooling), his name went up in a banner right alongside the Sabres legends, just where he belonged, and the inspired Sabres rolled past Washington.

Random Thoughts

Phil Blackwell

It only figured that the last game would include a late comeback and an OT game-winner, for after years of bad teams and bad management decisions, Buffalo, at long last, seems to have a team, led by Baldwinsville’s own Alex Tuch, ready to make serious noise and end a decade-long playoff drought. With any justice in the world, Rick Jeanneret can live long enough to see his beloved Sabres chase the one shiny silver trophy it never claimed all those years he chronicled them. Maybe somewhere RJ taped a clip of proclaiming that Buffalo won the Stanley Cup. Here’s hoping he did, and that we hear it. Phil Blackwell is sports editor at Eagle News. Cornell in the community: Jumping worms Submitted by Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County

Nearly all earthworms in the Northeast today are non-native, and these European and Asian invasives are altering the soil structure and chemistry of our forests. They consume the critical layer of organic matter that supplies vital nutrients for plants and provides food, protection and habitat for wildlife. However, jumping worms are especially concerning. These Asian exotics devour organic matter more rapidly than their European counterparts, stripping the forest of the layer critical for seedlings and wildflowers. Jumping worms grow twice as fast, reproduce more quickly and can infest soils at high densities. In areas of heavy infestation, native plants, soil invertebrates, salamanders, birds and other animals may decline. Jumping worms can severely damage roots of plants in nurseries, gardens, forests and turf. They, along with other invasive worms, can also help spread invasive plant species by disturbing the soil. Jumping worms are widespread across much of the Northeast, Southeast and Midwestern US, and the first records date to the late 19th century. Unfortunately, relatively little is known about them compared to European earthworms. Where to find them? They can be found on the soil surface and in the leaf litter, making them easy to find. They can live anywhere from urban parks and suburban backyards, to rural forests. You are very likely to find them in compost piles and along roads. A highly invasive species Many worm species can reproduce without mating,

which means a single worm can start a whole population. Because jumping worms are more aggressive and their populations can grow faster than the common European species, they may outcompete existing worm populations. Adults die prior to winter, but their young survive harsh New York winters in tiny, resilient cocoons. Cocoons are very small and dirt colored, so they are nearly impossible to spot with your own eyes. Cocoons can be spread easily in potted plants, and on landscaping equipment, mulch, tire treads and even hiking boots. What to look for: Worms are smooth, glossy gray or brown; 1.5 to 8 inches long Crazy behavior! They jump and thrash wildly when handled, moving more like a threatened snake. They can also shed their tails in defense. Clitellum (the narrow band around their body) is smooth to the body, unlike most other species which have a raised and pink colored clitellum. Their clitellum completely encircles the body and is often cloudy white to gray colored. Body looks metallic. Soil signature Jumping worms leave distinctive grainy soil full of worm castings. The soil becomes granular and looks like dried coffee grounds. Timing Best time to find them is late August or September when they are largest. Stop the spread. We currently have no viable earthworm control methods, but we CAN prevent their spread! Do not buy or use jumping worms for bait, vermicomposting, or gardening. Only sell, purchase, or trade compost that was heated to appropriate temperatures and duration fol-

Clean compost, soil and debris from vehicles, personal gear, equipment, and gardening tools before moving to and from sites. Dispose of all live worms in the trash or place them in a bag and leave out in the sun for at least 10 minutes. Then throw bag away. Be careful when sharing and moving plants. Always check for worms and know where your plantings come from. Buy bare root stock when possible. Check your property for earthworms using a mustard pour (it won’t harm your plants!) Mix a gallon of water with 1/3 cup of ground yellow mustard seed and pour slowly into the soil. This will drive any worms to the surface. Teacher appreciation

For those of us who have completed our years of school, from elementary and even through college, it is likely we have some perspective that let’s us look back and think fondly of some of our favorite teachers. Even for students who are still in the midst of their school days, there are probably teachers they have already created special bonds with or moments where they feel that their teacher has made a difference in their lives. This influence can make a big difference. It can come in any of the myriad things teachers do that resonate with a student. Whether it is taking those extra minutes to listen when a young students has a story they are excited to share or taking that extra time to help work through a math problem or listening to a student’s ideas on the meaning of a classic book or showing appreciation for writing skills or fanning the flame for students with a love of the arts or music or encouraging them to go the extra mile on the athletic field, teachers have an influence that resonates. In some cases it can even be this influence that helps us on our path to follow our passions and study harder, or push ourselves to explore new ideas in college or even helping us find our path in our adult lives with careers that were inspired by those little extra bits of encouragement we got from that teacher that we remember years later. Needless to say the role teachers play in our lives is not one that is easily confined or defined by the strict parameters of the school day and can have a lasting impact on our lives. According to pta.org, since 1984, the National PTA has designated one week in May as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. Last week, the first full week of May, was set aside as that week to stop and think about the educators in our lives and the lives of our children and to show our appreciation. In recent years teachers have shown an incredible ability to adapt and keep working to offer the best possible education for students. In 2020 as everything closed there was a great deal of uncertainty about so much, including how schools would function. Teacher rose to the challenge of teaching remotely and adapting lessons to this new reality. This was no small task and one that had to come together fairly quickly. Even as schools slowly returned to normal, teachers had to adapt to split schedules where students were present part of the time and remote other days. And even now as schools have returned to more or less normal, teachers are still working to address the challenges that the past couple of years posed, often going the extra mile to help student who may need a little extra help. This is all in addition to the many hours teachers put in on evenings, weekends and holidays to grade work, prepare lessons, make evaluations and numerous other tasks that cannot be done during the regular school day. Many teachers even go above and beyond purchasing supplies and other needed materials for their classes with their own money. For many of us the pandemic may have given us a little more insight into what it is like to be a teacher and a better sense of the work they put in every day. For many of us this has helped give us a deeper appreciation for the role educators play in the lives of our children. While the appreciation week has passed, like any other profession, extending courtesy and appreciation can go a long way. It never hurts to reach out to your children’s teachers and have a conversation, ask questions and let them know the work they do makes a difference. Or for other ideas visit pta.org to get some thoughts on ways to show appreciation for local teachers.

Thanks for the support

To the editor: The Cazenovia Garden Club wishes to thank those who supported our fund drive this spring. As we noted earlier, the challenges of COVID have limited our fund raising during the past two years. We are indeed grateful to those in the community who supported our mission to keep Cazenovia beautiful year-round; not only with a donation, but also with kind words of appreciation and support. With the onset of springlike weather, we are busily planning another summer of color along Albany Street and elsewhere in the village. The Cazenovia Garden Club Cazenovia

Budget needs adjustment

To the editor: The proposed FM School budget ought to be trimmed to better reflect the context in which it is being presented to the voters. That context includes us hopefully coming out of the COVID plague. This has been a tough time for teachers, students and administrators but also for parents and grandparents. Let’s hope it’s over. But the context also includes a 14% increase in state aid, already high school taxes, inflation increases hammering consumers and double digit increases in property tax assessments. In this context the board recommends a roughly $1.2 million increase in the local tax levy. This is an increase not a decrease though some of the board’s communications seem to imply otherwise. My suggestion is that the board sharpen their pencils and adopt modest cuts to eliminate the $1.2 million increase for 2022-2023. That will allow the board and property taxpayers time to absorb the town’s large assessment increases and hopefully let us get through the current inflation spikes. This is one voter who will be trying to send this budget proposal back to the board for adjustment. George Mitchell Manlius

FFL budget vote is May 17

To the editor: Few people pay attention to or question library propositions when Fayetteville-Manlius School District budgets are presented. Library budgets are small lines in a multi-page publication and increases seem incremental. Why should we care? If you love the Fayetteville Free Library or never use it take a closer look at the library’s budget proposal for 20222023. Problems occurred at the FFL when no one paid attention. The governing board eroded. Budgets presented to voters exceeded the NYS Tax Cap and were not clarified or followed. Questions about the use of funds are still unanswered. The Fayetteville Free Library is one of 346 private non-profit libraries in New York State authorized by NYS Education Law 259 to obtain funding through a local property tax levy. Local tax dollars are the primary support for these libraries. When voters approve library budgets the appropriation becomes a permanent source of revenue that taxpayers pay annually. If a proposition requesting an increase is rejected by voters, library funding stays at the current year’s level. While public libraries are accountable to taxpayers, there are few regulations for non-profit libraries addressing transparency, governance and financial accountability. Non-profit libraries are not subject to the Freedom of Information Law. Nor do they fall under the authority of school districts or local government. Oversight is the responsibility of a volunteer board of

directors. Local property tax dollars account for 97.6 percent of the FFL’s funding yet taxpayers are not represented on the board. From 2017-2021 there was a significant increase in local tax dollars paid to the library, +$182,891 (9.5%). In 2017 FFL received $1,739,907. By 2021 the appropriation increased to $1,922,798. During 2020-2021 the library was fully funded, had surpluses, and received supplemental Covid relief funds and donations. A reserve fund of $200,000 was set up and the library expects $111,000 more in federal funds (FFL Board minutes 3/8/22). Some monies were spent for building improvements. However, these revenues and capital expenses are not reported in the 2022-2023 budget presented to voters. Why? This year FFL trustees are asking us to invest $1,959,331 (+$36,533) in the library. Approximately 25,601 people live in the F-M School District (2020 Census) and there are 12,498 FFL card holders. The cost per capita will be $76.55, or $156.77 per cardholder, if the proposition is approved. What are we getting for our investment? If you read the library’s annual report and budget proposition, it’s hard to tell. The annual report doesn’t include a financial statement. According to the condensed budget presented, taxpayers will pay for “Program and Materials,” “Information Technology,” “Building and Grounds,” “Finance,” “Administrative,” and “Personnel.” These costs are not explained. Before seeking any increase in the tax levy, the FFL should present detailed information to voters clearly explaining the library’s financial position and why more money, in addition to nearly $2 million in guaranteed tax revenue, is needed. Know what your tax bill is for. Vote on Tuesday, May 17, at Fayetteville Elementary School. Mary Karpinski Fayetteville

No on diesel buses

To the editor: Last week the Cazenovia Republican published an article concerning the BOE’s position on the new state mandate to transition NY state school buses to an all electric fleet. The approved state budget includes a mandate that all new buses will be zero emissions by 2027 and the switchover to electric will be completed by 2035. Mr Finnerty, assistant superintendent said they are not opposed to EV buses but he sees many roadblocks. He claimed, “National Grid said their infrastructure will not support the charging of these buses at this point…and that an alternative option would be to charge with a gas or diesel powered generator.” I have worked at several EV car events and found this statement not plausible, so I contacted National Grid. According to Jared Paventi of National Grid, “National Grid is ready to work with school districts Letters l Page 7

Automated trash service to roll out in the town of Manlius By John Deer

On May 31, the town of Manlius trash collection will move to an automated collection system with our existing hauler, Syracuse Haulers. This will only affect residents outside of the three villages. Our goal is to have this transition go smoothly and ensure residents have all their questions answered. Beginning May 16, Syracuse Haulers will be delivering to each residence two new 95-gallon carts; one for trash and one for single-stream recycling. These carts will be the only containers that are serviced and are marked uniquely for each home. The new pickup service will begin

May 31, but feel free to use the new carts once delivered. Due to the nature of the new trucks, these carts require placement to enable the arm to lift and empty them. Please place these new carts with the handle facing your home and at least five feet from one another or on opposite sides of your driveway. Pickup days will remain the same, and as you may do now, place your carts out the night before, or by 6 a.m. at the curbside. We have been advised that if carts are overloaded, contain unauthorized items, or containers are improperly placed, Syracuse Haulers may skip your pick-up. All garbage and recycling must be placed in the carts to be picked up.

Old trash cans can be discarded at the town of Manlius Highway Department located at 5970 Clemons Rd., East Syracuse, NY 13057 during the month of June. Old trash cans can also be used for brush pickup or repurposed. We would like to assist OCRRA in collecting as many of the blue recycling bins as possible to be reused or recycled. Please return all bins, regardless of condition, to the Highway Department or the town of Manlius Town Hall at 301 Brooklea Dr, Fayetteville, NY 13066. Recycling bins drop off areas will be marked off starting May 31 and will remain for a few months. If you would like additional carts for

your trash, please contact the town of Manlius and additional carts will be provided for a fee. Residents can request a smaller, 65-gallon set of containers for a fee of $162.00 starting July 1, 2022. Please contact Syracuse Haulers to request that change. Any questions about the new service can be directed to Syracuse Haulers at 315426-6771. If you do not receive a pair of carts, it is likely that you are not currently enrolled. If you have questions about whether you are currently enrolled in trash pick-up, please contact our trash and brush liaison at (315) 637-8815.

Should I stay or should I go? How to navigate the spring housing market By Brooke Gifford Community Bank Mortgage Loan Consultant

Buy or wait? It’s a question many homebuyers are asking themselves this time of year. Spring is in the air, and the surging residential real estate market of the past two years has led to recordhigh home prices and record-low inventory. According to data from realtor.com, the inventory of homes for sale dropped 53% between April 2020 and April 2021. And 2022 is looking to be another whirlwind year for buyers — especially first-timers. Buyer interest continues to outpace the number of homeowners willing to sell, making this year’s

real estate game a perfect seller’s market, an ongoing trend we’ve seen for months. But like clockwork, spring historically tends to be the most competitive time to buy a home. It may be the warmer weather, and the end of the school year looming that urges buyers and sellers to jump into the market. The burning question: How do you navigate the spring housing market? First, understand your finances. You need to have a clear picture of your financial situation to help you determine a realistic down payment and how much you can qualify for. The usual tips apply more than ever, like getting prequalified for your

looking to explore the transition to electric buses. Our fleet programs advise our customers looking to transition their fleet to electric vehicles, assist them to create capacity, and add the necessary equipment to support this expansion.” A NY state bond act in November includes 500 million dollars in financial assistance to school districts to purchase or lease buses and charging infrastructure. This year our school budget vote includes the purchase of three new diesel buses which the school intends to keep for eight years. As a taxpayer consider that by 2030-2031 these diesel school buses will not be able to be sold for school use anywhere in NY state, they could potentially have almost no residual value and will not be able to be used for school transportation in NY after 2035. I am asking that the voters of Cazenovia vote against the purchase of new diesel buses and begin an early transition to electric. As with most programs that have been enacted to encourage the transition to clean energy, the earlier one participates the more likely to get the most support and tax incentives. National Grid is willing and able to help with the transition, and NY state will have incentives available likely by this year. Let us postpone the purchase of new buses so Cazenovia CSD can use the opportunity to take advantage of the incentives that will be available and show that we are a forward thinking and climate smart community. Also consider that there are known deleterious effects of diesel fumes and particulates on children traveling on school buses. We can protect our children’s health by making this switch. Vote no on diesel buses and tell your BOE that we want to be an early adopter of EV buses. Laurie Feine-Dudley Cazenovia

mortgage. Especially in today’s hot market, every second counts. Take the steps to get prequalified so you’re getting an estimate of what you might be able to borrow based on important information you provide about your finances, as well as a credit check. During the prequalification process, your lender can help you learn about and understand different mortgage options to fit your needs. Many realtors and real

estate agents will encourage you to get pre-qualified before they show you a property. Getting prequalified is a smart step to take and it shows sellers that you’re a serious homebuyer and ready to take the next steps to secure a mortgage. Act quickly, but patience is key. Because of limited inventory, houses are selling before you even have time to view them online. You’re in the same boat with

hundreds of thousands of buyers. So while it’s important to be ready to see a listing and put in a quick offer at a moment’s notice, be prepared, review your contract with your attorney for contingencies, and be ready to go. Homebuying in a hot market is a marathon, not a sprint. People do crazy things to buy the home of their dreams in a hot market. Like purchasing a house sight unseen to make a

quick decision. But don’t cut corners. It’s one of the biggest purchases and investments you’ll make. Don’t waive the home inspection contingency just to strengthen your offer. While a competitive market often requires quick thinking and a potentially higher purchase price to walk away a homeowner, it doesn’t mean you should have to give up insights into the home you’re purchasing.

Years Ago in History By Cindy Bell Tobey

We called upon Mr. Johnson, in his new photograph rooms yesterday and find him finely situated in the second story of the Ten Eyck Block. At present he makes sittings up stairs in the skylight room formerly used by Mr. Mather, but will soon be in his permanent room, now being built in the rear of the Ten Eyck Block, the annex will built of brick and contain two skylight one at each end of the gallery, giving him facilities not usually found in galleries even in cities. Mr. Johnson wished us to correct the impressions many have that he was not ready for Patrons, and to say that he has missed only four days in making sittings since his removal. Call and see him and you will be more than pleased with the enterprise of Mr. J.

120 years ago – May 8, 1902

There have been several responses to the question propounded by Mr. C.S. Titus, of New York in the last issue of the Republican, as to the proper name of Cazenovia Lake. Mr. Titus evidently has some doubts as to the genuineness of the name Owahgena, believing that the proper Indian title is “Canasaraga.” Most of those who have offered evidence in the matter have referred to Mrs. Hammond’s history of Madison County, which in reference to the lake states: “The lake also was named in honor of John Lincklaen. On all the early maps the lake bore no other name than ‘Lincklaen’s Lake.’ In later years, when the village had grown into some importance it gradually came to be known as ‘Cazenovia Lake,’ and more recently the aboriginal name ‘Owahgena’ meaning the lake where the yellow fish swim or yellow perch lake, has become quite generally adopted.”

There was shipped last week Friday from the J. A. Loyster Machine Shop at Cazenovia a bottle cap machine to London, England. The machine, which weighs about 5,000 pounds, was invented and built by Mr. Loyster. It prints from a roll at high speed and automatically cuts out and paraffines the milk caps. Previously, special printing presses invented and manufactured here by Mr. Loyster have been shipped to France, China and two to Cuba. Two machines are now being built for shipment to Canada. The local plant is rushed to its fullest capacity and has been all through the dull times. In fact, the plant even in the dullest times was not able to keep up with the orders and had to have several thousand dollars of its work done in outside shops.

Pompey Center School District, No. 10 has become the 29th district to centralize with Cazenovia Central School, the result of a 36 to 11 ballot Tuesday night. Sometime ago taxpayers of that district requested the privilege of voting on the proposition of centralizing with Cazenovia, but local authorities prevailed upon them to postpone the election until their voters could thoroughly study the matter. The decision brings with it an assessed valuation of $130,000 and about 21 pupils who if distributed throughout the local school will average two pupils to each grade. The Cazenovia Central School appreciates the confidence placed in her system by Pompey Center and extends a warm welcome to her neighbors from the west.

Fayetteville native wins big at Indie Series Awards By Jason Klaiber Staff Writer

Fayetteville native Jason Cicci has never been one to sit back and wait for opportunities to come his way. That being so, the wherewithal to share his artistry regardless of how many callbacks he receives has sent him down the independent route as an actor, writer and producer—a route that has yielded gratifying results. Most recently, a pair of web shows created by Cicci together secured 16 nominations and six wins at the 12th Annual Indie Series Awards, a ceremony held this past month in Los Angeles to celebrate excellence in scripted internet entertainment. Cicci’s digital series “Cady Did” was nominated a dozen times, later taking home the awards for Best Comedy Series, Best Production Design for Scott Michael Salame, Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for its coproducer and star Cady Huffman, and best guest actor and actress roles for Scott Adsit and Joyce Van Patten respectively. “We can’t believe how great the show turned out,” Cicci said. “It came together so beautifully, and we’re still sort of in awe of it even though we worked hard to make it.” Conceived by Cicci as a fictionalized vehicle for Huffman’s humorous antics, “Cady Did” follows the titular character as she distances from the fallout of an on-camera outburst gone viral. She ends up running a public access channel after venturing back to her hometown of Hackettsville, a made-up place that resembles parts of Upstate New York. “Even in the show, there are some jokes about how it’s always winter

and how there never seems to be any sun,” Cicci said. That series features not only Huffman, who appeared in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and the Broadway production of “The Producers,” but also the fellow Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehardt and the Emmy-nominated actress Veanne Cox. It was also the project that inspired Cicci and his producing partner John Cramer to start Make Your Show, a production company that develops original, personalized showcases for its performers. From that point, the idea arose for “Searching for Sylvie,” an 11episode web series devised for Susan Jeffries that to her liking didn’t relegate her to the role of a grandmother in the background or a woman on her deathbed. With separate nominations in this year’s Best Direction, Best Actress in a Comedy, and Best Comedy Series categories, “Searching for Sylvie” nabbed the Best Supporting Actor award for David Lavine’s portrayal of a “fastidious, by-the-books” administrator at a school where Sylvie gets a job. “To be recognized for projects you initiate yourself is really something special,” Cicci said. “When you’re making these indie shows, you really count on the creative power of the actors and any collaborator to make the story that much more resonant with people.” An actor since his childhood, Cicci took part in scholastic productions year to year as a student in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, which he said accommodated a welcoming, close-knit arts community. “I can’t say enough about growing up in Fayetteville,” Cicci said.

Submitted photos

Two shows created by F-M alumnus Jason Cicci altogether garnered 16 nominations and six wins at this year’s Indie Series Awards. “It’s such a beautiful place, and it was a great training ground for what I would end up doing with my life.” Desiring an outlet for the summers, he and his friends started their own community production company as high school seniors for aspiring actors ages 12 to 20, aptly named At That Stage. Along the way, Cicci gained firsthand experience when it came to designing sets, finding costumes, and raising enough money before opening night. He went on to participate in numerous productions during his time with the Syracuse University drama department, and once he graduated from the college in 1993, he felt as prepared as could be to dive into the business and lifestyle of acting, singing, dancing and movement. In the ensuing years, while facing higher stakes and learning how to move on from rejection, he established another company called Monday Morning Productions, thus cementing a greater foothold in the industry alongside a group of former

classmates. With that company, Cicci gravitated toward on-camera storytelling as a lower-cost, better-documented alternative to theater productions, one that wouldn’t need to guarantee that the audience seats would be filled. In his approach to crafting 22minute episodic scripts, he drew influence from “true-to-life” sitcoms like “Cheers,” “All in the Family” and “Moonlighting” as well as the wordplay in the works of Neil Simon and Woody Allen. Prototypical performances of his two-season comedy “He’s With Me” allowed him to test the rhythm of his writing in front of West Village crowds, and to challenge himself more, he thought it best to tighten

up the plot lines and boil them down to around 10 minutes, a format he decided to stick with. “He’s With Me” wound up being an award winner in its own right, not to mention his archway to meeting Huffman, Debra Jo Rupp of “That ‘70s Show” fame, and visual artist Bob Giraldi, with whom he has made several short films. Now residing in Fairfield, Connecticut, Cicci has additionally taught workshops at Ethical Culture Fieldston School in the Bronx that touch on such topics as crowdfunding, comfort with on-camera acting, and the audition process. To learn more, visit jasoncicci. com or view his shows “Cady Did” and “Searching for Sylvie” on YouTube.

Travel writer releases guidebook for Syracuse area By Jason Klaiber Staff Writer A local travel writer This spring has been promoting her recently released Syracuse area guidebook—a nudge for those looking to cross a few entries off their Salt City bucket list. Counting the Community Library of DeWitt & Jamesville, a pair of local Barnes & Noble stores and Destiny USA’s Museum of Intrigue among her scheduled stops, Linda Lowen has spent time inscribing purchased copies of her new book “100 Things to Do in Syracuse Before You Die” with personalized paragraphs at each signing. In her view, the book would appeal to not only out-of-towners unfamiliar with that which is “uniquely Syracuse” but also longtime residents as they explore the overlooked parts of the city while reacquainting themselves with its popular destinations. “People do get burned out on Syracuse, but if you’re going to raise

a family and be a homeowner, this is an incredible place to be because everything is within reach,” Lowen said. “So I’d say this is a hopeful book since you get a chance to fall in love with Syracuse all over again.” Published by Reedy Press, the insider’s guide provides historical background for its numbered attractions along with personal recommendations like favorite dishes to sample and pointers suggesting the best season to visit given spots. Its 140-or-so pages span five categories, though some events, places and activities pop up in multiple sections. For example, the Great New York State Fair appears in different capacities under both “Food and Drink” and “Music and Entertainment,” as does Beak & Skiff. Lorenzo opens May 20, to host guest speaker

S

ituated in historic Cazenovia, Lorenzo State Historic Site is the 1807 Federal style home of John Lincklaen, Holland Land Company agent and founder of Cazenovia. Lorenzo was continually occupied by the Lincklaen/ Ledyard family until the property and contents were conveyed to New York State in 1968. The imprint of all of Lorenzo’s residents, including the enslaved people, servants and many employees required to run the estate, can be found at every turn. Visitors to Lorenzo enjoy guided tours of the Mansion furnished with 160 years of original furnishings. Explore the visitor center for the history of Cazenovia, building of Lorenzo, an amazing carriage and sleigh display, and to watch an introductory video. Visit the museum shop which features a unique selection of stationery, historic reproductions, design and history books, reprints, and gift items. Attend the many special events and presentations on the historic grounds including the annual “Lorenzo Driving Competition,” “Rippleton School-

house Community Day” and “Christmas at Lorenzo.” Starting May 20, the grounds of Lorenzo are open daily, year-round, dawn until dusk to stroll through the Ellen Shipman designed formal garden and Dark Aisle Arboretum or hike the connective trail through the 87-acre site. On May 21 the facility will host guest speaker Lavada Nahon who will presents “African American Foodways in Colonial and New Nation New York.” Colonists and immigrants maintain their connections to homelands and ethnic groups through the foods they eat, the ways they cook, and the recipes they pass on. But what if your link to this gateway was cut off? Nahon will offer a look into the historic kitchens of New York. Join in the conversation as she shares what she has learned of the culinary traditions of those enslaved in the colony. From the jambless hearths and gardens of the early Dutch settlers to the kitchen and fields at Lorenzo, what is there and what does it tell us about the foodways of the enslaved and their descendants.

Nahon is the interpreter of African American History for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. A noted culinary historian, she has a wealth of experience interpreting the lives of free and enslaved African Americans across the mid-Atlantic region, with an emphasis on the work of enslaved cooks in the homes of the elite class.

Golf bits and pieces… The Longest Golf Course in The World is… The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club in Lijiang, China. The course plays 8,548 yds. and is a par 72 golf course. You can expect to play some par-4’s that should be played as par5’s. However, because it is a mountain course, you should be able to hit the ball farther. Ok, great, thanks for the pep talk! The Longest Golf Course in The World By Mileage Distance and Land Space is… The Nullarbor Links course in Australia. This course spreads out over 150 miles and “must” be driven by car to complete each hole. The average distance between each hole is 41 miles…only automobiles…no golf carts. The actual course is only 6,750 yards long but…41 miles between holes would be a big pain…you know where…for me. How about you? The Longest Golf Hole in the World is… You guessed correct. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club in China has the longest. It is the par-5 fifth hole that measures 711 yards…AND…If you want to get away from what we call “traditional” golf courses, there is a monster hole in South Korea at the Gunsan Country Club that measures 1,097 yards. Are Golf Courses Playing Longer? You bet they are. Because golf club technology has advanced significantly and allowed us to hit the ball farther, golf courses have had to adjust by making them longer to maintain the “degree of difficulty”. This phenomenon has universally become known as, “The Tiger Woods Effect” on the PGA Tour. Tiger was one of the longest drivers on Tour and the game became almost unfair to the other players who couldn’t hit the ball as far. You do remember… don’t you? You might also remember that in 1980, the average driving distance on the PGA Tour was about 257 yards. The average distance today is around 296 yards. Forty yards closer to the green certainly makes your approach shot a lot easier. How Do You Determine What Yardage You Should Play A Golf Course? A research team at Athletic Motion Golf came up with a simple formula to determine TOWN OF CAZENOVIA your ideal course yardage by using your 5 iron OFFICIAL NOTICE (or 5 hybrid) distance. They admit it is not NOTICE OF PUBLIC perfect, especially for beginners, but they say HEARING itZoning is a “helpful guidepost”: Board of * If Appeals your 5 iron distance is 100 yards, your Notice herebyyardage given is 3,600 NOTICE OF PUBLIC idealiscourse yards. that a public hearing beMEETING * If your 5 iron distance is 120 yards, your fore the Zoning Board of TOWN OF CAZENOVIA Appeals of the Town of is 4,320 SEWER ADVISORY ideal course yardage yards.

Cazenovia boys tennis sweeps Chittenango by Phil Blackwell

In a season full of starts and stops and weather postponements, the Cazenovia and Chittenango boys tennis teams would confront one another again last Thursday afternoon. And it would belong to the Lakers, who were perfect in singles and close to the same in doubles on the way to defeating the Bears 5-0. Traian Cherciu, with his 6-0, 6-0 romp over Luke Dahlin, began a run where Garret Lounsbury would shut out Logan Bronner and Jake Wardell would do the same against Seth Boulter. Pushed to a second-set tiebreaker in doubles, Andrew Falso and Gabe Reagan still beat Artie Paul and Jake Simmons 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) as Carter Ruddy and Cy Lurie handled Dylan Bassett and Kaiden George 6-2, 6-3.

Before this, both sides played well last Tuesday, Cazenovia dominating Onondaga/Westhill 5-0 as Chittenango nearly upended unbeaten Skaneateles before taking a 3-2 defeat. Boulter won for the Bears in singles, topping Skaneateles’ James Lovier 6-4, 6-4, while Paul and Simmons got a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ethan Pickup an Nick Cerimeli. However, Bronner and Micah Alperuto each lost their singles matches in two sets as Boulter and Dahlin battled hard, but fell to Hatcher Gutchess and Marcus McClanahan 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). As for Cazenovia, Cherciu’s 6-4, 6-0 win over OCS/Westhill’s Shay Smyth was as close as it got. Lounsbury handled Jon Massaro 6-3, 6-2, Wardell blanked Christian Loomis 6-0, 6-0 and the doubles teams of Reagan-Falso and Lurie Ruddy also had shutouts.

Then, facing Marcellus on Friday, Cazenovia was quite impressive, blanking the Mustangs 5-0 and preserving the shutout when Falso and Reagan,in three sets, rallied past Chris Barbaro and Tyler Szalach 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Lounsbury and Wardell both won 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Dan Fox and Tucker Guerina, with Cherciu beating Matt Vitale 6-2, 6-1 as Lurie and Ruddy handled Harry Hoey and Mike Deveraux 6-0, 6-1. Chittenango defeated Pulaski 5-0 on Friday with Dahlin topping Garrett Starbird 6-3, 6-0 in singles ahead of Bronner blanking Austin Dufrane 6-0, 6-0 and Levi Mullin beating Myer Butler 6-0, 6-1. The doubles teams of Paul-Simmons and Bassett-Boulter did not lose a game between them, either.

Cazenovia girls golfers take trio of defeats by Phil Blackwell

Four matches in a span of five days composed the busiest stretch of the regular season for the Cazenovia girls golf team. It began last Monday amid wet conditions at the Links at Erie Village, where Grace Probe had the lowest round for the Lakers, yet it still lost 219-234 to Bishop Grimes. Probe shot 44 for nine holes, four strokes ahead of the Cobras’ low round of 48 by Natalie Musolino, while Claire Marris tied Ashley Ince for third place with a 55.

However, four other Grimes players, including Althea Simmons (56) and Abby Docos (60), beat the third-best Cazenovia total of 67 from Lucy Hagan as Iris Casey had a 68 and Jordan Bradley a 71. Against Manlius-Pebble Hill Wednesday at Cazenovia Country Club, the Lakers lost 235-256. Probe’s 56 and Marris shooting 62 trailed the Trojans’ Amitees Fazeli, who shot 45, and Parmees Fazeli, who had a 51. Bradley improved to a 69, equaling Molly Wilcox, with Casey and Hagan both posting 70. Cazenovia took a 234-246 defeat to Skaneateles on Thursday at Ska-

neateles Country Club. Chittenango matched up against Westhill last Tuesday and lost, 199272, to the Warriors at Camillus Golf Club. Abby VanDee shot a 64 and Emma Stanek had a 68 ahead of 70s from Claire Kelso and Christian Terasevich as Catherine Dadey led Westhill with a 46. The Bears’ match with MPH on Friday ended 262-262, a rare tie where Ava Hohl shot 62 to lead Chittenango. VanDee shot 66 and Rory Beckwith shot 67 behind the 43 from Amitees Fazeli and 57 from Parmees Fazeli.

Chittenango softball goes 2-1 by Phil Blackwell

Going into May, the Chittenango softball team was on quite a roll, having netted double-digit runs in each of its previous four games. Now the Bears would go up against state Class B no. 22-ranked Jordan-Elbridge last Tuesday afternoon, and despite a furious comeback attempt, it lost, 7-5, to the Eagles. They traded runs in the second inning, J-E scoring twice to go up 2-1, and in the third the Eagles struck for four runs, only to have Chittenango counter with a four-run rally of its own. But J-E kept the Bears quiet the rest of the way and moved to Softball l Page 15

The board appointed the following members to a comprehensive plan review special board: Kyle Reger (town councilor), Robert Ridler (planning board), Michael Palmer (ZBA), Roger Cook (zoning & codes enforcement), Elizabeth Moran (former town supervisor), and Kristi Andersen (former town councilor). The last Village & Town of Cazenovia Comprehensive Plan was adopted by the town board in June 2008. The collaborative planning initiative involved the village and town planning boards, officials, business owners, and residents, with professional consultants tasked with guiding and managing the process. The process involved the development of a vision statement, identification of community values, establishment of community goals, and development of recommended action steps. The newly formed special board will be charged with amending/updating the comprehensive plan for possible adoption by the town board. The meeting was attended by multiple residents who are concerned about drainage issues on a section of Ridge Road. Town Supervisor Bill Zupan invited all interested stakeholders to meet with the board and the town engineer on May 17 at 7 p.m. to ask questions and help develop a plan of action. “We know we’ve got to take care of the water problem, because it’s a hazard and it’s in [a town road] and the town is responsible for fixing it,” Zupan said. “That’s what we know. What we’ve got to do is find out a way to fix the problems, to try to [alleviate] everybody’s fears about what is happening.”

Caz girls track routs Solvay, stays unbeaten by Kurt Wheeler

The Cazenovia girls track and field team remained undefeated as they overwhelmed OHSL Liberty league foe Solvay 132-8 and non-league opponent OnTech Charter 137-3 last Wednesday, winning 16 of the 17 events against the Bearcats and all 17 against OnTech. Despite competing in a steady rain throughout the meet, the Lakers kept its focus and delivered a series of consistent performances to earn the wins. Katie Whitney led the team on the track, posting victories in the 100 (13.3 seconds) and 200-meter dash (28.6) and anchoring the 4x100 to first place in 54.5 seconds. Melanie Michael led off the 4x100 and earned two individual victories of her own as she captured the 100 meter hurdles in 17.8 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:15.3. Grace Dolan was also a triple winner, capturing the 400 in 1:04.1 and contributing to the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays, while Olivia Wong led the team’s effort in the distance events,

prevailing in the 1,500 and the 3,000-meter runs. Faith Wheeler earned the Lakers final individual victory on the track with a 2:44 effort in the 800-meter run. Claire Braaten, Nadia Segall, Zoey Gagne and Kate Millson teamed up for the victory in the 4x800 meter run while Olivia Ruddy, Meghan Mehlbaum and Millson joined Dolan for the 4x400 victory to ice a perfect 87-0 shutout of Solvay on the track. OnTech was able to earn second in the 100 meter dash to hold the Laker track advantage to 84-3 against them. Corinne Albicker led the Lakers in the field events, earning two victories there to add to her winning leg on the 4x100 and her second place finish in the 100 hurdles. She won the long jump at 13 feet 8 inches despite the soggy runway and prevailed in the triple jump with a 29’2” effort. Susie Pittman continued her success in the pole vault, winning at 7’6” with Wheeler one height back at 7 feet. Pittman also added a second in the high jump to back up Katie Pavelchak’s winning effort of 4’8”.

Karly Vaas led Cazenovia in the throws, winning the shot put with a 22’5” toss. Solvay’s lone win came in the discus as Emily Rolince was first at 72’9”,but the Lakers’ Danielle Smith (68’1 1/2”) and Skye Stanford (61’9”) quickly took second and third to minimize the advantage. The Cazenovia girls achieved 35 season best performances despite the wet weather. Noteworthy bests included Bonnie Pittman’s 19.0 in the 100 hurdles for third place along with Nadia Segall (5:36.5) and Mary Williams (5:39.0) who placed second and third in the 1500. Sophie Rheaume ran a career best of 14.1 in the 100 to earn third place while Meghan Mehlbaum scored in two new events (800, long jump) as she prepared for a potential postseason attempt in the fiveevent entathlon. The 4-0 Lakers would visit Marcellus, the only other unbeaten squad in the OHSL Liberty Central Division Division, on Wednesday as the two teams vie for the regular season league title.

SPRINT STANDOUT: Cazenovia girls track and field runner Katie Whitney won both the 100 and 200-meter sprints, and helped the Lakers take the 4x100 relay, during last Wednesday’s sweep of Solvay and Syracuse OnTech Charter.

Cazenovia baseball shuts Cazenovia girls lacrosse Caz boys lacrosse edged out Skaneateles, 4-0 beats Tully, LaFayette by Marcellus, Homer by Phil Blackwell

Back-to-back defeats to Christian Brothers Academy and Phoenix at the end of April had set back the Cazenovia baseball team, but now it did something about it. Capping a weekend where it won three times in a 24-hour span, Cazenovia pulled off a 4-0 shutout over reigning Section III Class B champion Skaneateles in last Saturday’s Laker clash at Dubik Field. Cazenovia did catch Skaneatlees coming off an emotional eight-inning, 9-7 defeat to Westhill the day before, but it also had pitching ace Jack Byrnes on the mound and, again, he proved tough. Though he gave up six hits and hit another batter, Byrnes constantly escaped trouble, recording seven strikeouts and pitching well with the lead his teammates gave him. A run in the first inning, two runs in the second and another in the fifth proved enough, Jack Donlin getting a pair of hits and earning an RBI as Sully Clarke also drove in a run. Joey Awald and Taven Reilley joined Donlin and Byrnes in the run-scoring column. Looking to avenge its April 4 loss to Homer last Tuesday, the Lakers could not do so, unable to contain the Trojans in a 12-3 defeat. Cazenovia scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, only to have Homer move in front for good with runs in every inning from the third onward. For its part, the Lakers only had four hits as A.J. Rothfeld got credit for an RBI. Jack Byrnes pitched four innings and took the loss as the Trojans’ Tanner Douglass went four-for-five and drove in four runs. Turning this around on Friday, Cazenovia swept a doubleheader from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, winning both games in lopsided fashion. The opening game went 14-3 over the Rebels, including a six-run third inning and five-run fourth inning. Jack Donlin not only pitched a complete game, he hit a home run as he, along with Rothfeld, Jacob Szalach and Jacob Grevelding, each scored twice. In the second game, it went 12-2 in Cazenovia’s favor. Grevelding pitched and also had four RBIs, Szalach also driving in four runs as Rothfeld got two RBIs and scored three runs. Byrnes contributed three hits. Chittenango returned to action last Tuesday against Hannibal and engaged in an exciting, back-and-forth battle that it was able to claim over the Warriors by a slim 9-8 margin. Both sides picked up runs early, the Bears seeing leads of 3-0 and 5-4 disappear before it scored three times in the top of the fourth to move ahead for good. Still, a seventh-inning tally was needed as Chittenango, up 9-6, gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but saw relief pitcher Kyle Peryer pick up the final out. Taking advantage of five Hannibal errors, the Bears saw Austin Khammar earn a pair of hits as he, along with Ben Welch and David Bruno, drove in single runs. Welch and Bruno also pitched before Peryer took over late. In Saturday’s 12-1 defeat to Bishop Grimes, the Bears fell to 4-6 overall, with still half of its schedule that it hopes to play over the next two weeks.

Having faced plenty of adversity during the first half of the 2022 regular season, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team was determined to turn it around. When the Lakers faced Tully/ Fabius-Pompey last Monday at Cazenovia College’s Christakos Field, it put together a fine all-around effort to take out the Black Knights 16-5. Building a 9-3 advantage by halftime, Cazenovia kept it up thanks to a perfectly balanced attack where seven different players picked up multiple goals. Charlie Prior, with three goals and two assists, led the way as Riley Knapp also had three goals. Megan Kuhn and Madison DeAngelis had two goals and two assists, with Katie Rajkowski and Hadley Schug both producing two goals and one assist. Julia Reff also had a two-goal outing. Cazenovia proved successful again on Thursday afternoon against LaFayette, rolling to a 13-5 victory over the Lancers with a steady, well-balanced attack. Knapp and Rajkowski each scored three times, with DeAngelis and Kuhn netting two goals apiece. Schug got a goal ane two assists as Prior and Cailtyn Smithers also found the net and Mackenzie Halladay recorded seven saves. Chittenango was 7-2 going into last Monday’s game against Christian Brothers Academy, but found itself unable to contain the Brothers’ Gracie Britton in a 6-8 defeat. Britton, with eight goals, matched the entire Bears roster, with help from Maeve Mackenzie’s three goals. Ashley O’Hara did get two goals and four assists for Chittenango as Cara Kielbasa scored three times and Brooke Walters had two goals. Caitlyn Sgambellone also found the net. In Thursday’s 14-5 loss to Homer, the Bears could not overcome a 7-2 halftime deficit. Sgambellone was the lone Chittenango player to score twice. Kielbasa and O’Hara both had one goal and one assist, with Newkirk getting the other goal. Kloey Roos (five goals) and Hannah Slade (four goals) accounted for most of the Trojans’ production. On Saturday, Chittenango met Whitesboro and lost to the Warriors 12-6. O’Hara had three goals, with Newkirk scoring twice and Skyler Brown adding a goal. Sgambellone and Kielbasa had one assist apiece. Abby Penfield recorded 12 saves.

The last week of April proved rough for the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team with four consecutive defeats to Westhill, Christian Brothers Academy and Marcellus. Of those games, the two with Marcellus were the most frustrating. In the initial encounter on April 30, Cazenovia led long stretches of the game, only to get shut out in the homestretch as Marcellus inched in front and prevailed 7-6, led by Chris Doshna’s four goals. Jack Wright had three goals to pace the Lakers, but Brody Coleman was held to one goal and one assist, matching Forrest Ives, with Chris Vecchiarelli also converting. Mustangs goalie Quenten Polkowski had 16 saves, twice Tucker Ives’ total. When these same two teams met at Marcellus three nights later, again it was a defensive battle decided by a single goal – and again Cazenovia was on the wrong end of it, this time by an 8-7 margin. Coleman was far more active here, scoring three times and getting a pair of assists. Wright netted two goals, with Ives and D.B. Falge adding one goal apiece. Yet once again Doshna burned the Lakers for four goals and, once more, Polkowski made a difference, earning 12 saves as Tucker Ives got 11 saves. Luke Spitzer, Marcus Darminio and Adam Rayfield each had one goal and one assist. After all this, what Cazenovia needed was any sort of victory – and it arrived last Thursday when it rolled past the LaFayette Lancers in a 17-5 decision. Traditionally a lacrosse powerhouse, LaFayette has struggled this spring, entering the game 3-6. And the Lakers took out its frustrations on the Lancers, roaring to an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and up 12-2 by halftime. Coleman, regaining some of his early-season form, amassed seven goals and four assists. Forrest Ives scored four times, with D.B. Falge getting a three-goal hat trick as James LeFever had a goal and two assists. Wright and Gavin Winn also earned goals as Tucker Ives got credited with an assist to go with his seven saves. With an opportunity to avenge an early-season defeat to Homer on Saturday afternoon, the Lakers were again on the wrong end of a close decision, falling 10-8 to the Trojans. Wright’s three-goal hat trick, along with Coleman’s two goals and four assists, were not enough. Wyatt Hartley got two goals and Falge also scored, with Hunter Riehlman’s five goals and Ben Bradshaw’s 12 saves keying Homer’s effort. Chittenango witnessed some history last Thursday night as it lost, 20-10, to Homer, who gave long-time head coach Tom Cottrell his 250th career win. It was 12-5 by halftime, but the Bears kept fighting as Connor Meeks-Vaughn had four goals and one assist, with Brendon Barnard adding three goals and one assist. Vince Lazzaro scored twice as Ethan Robles had one goal.

8-1 on the season, while Chittenango fell to 7-3 overall. A doubleheader with Mexico followed and the Bears swept it, taking the five-inning opener 8-3 by scoring runs in each of the first four innings. Anna Cavotta went three-for-three, scoring twice and driving in a run. Lauren Machan had two RBIs as Lily Callahan and Anna Spencer had one RBI apiece. In the second game, Chittenango completed the sweep 8-1, a five-run first inning all that pitcher Caroline Porter needed as she limited the Tigers to one hit and struck out six. Olivia Jackson’s home run provided the power for the Bears. Spencer and Brianna Tooke both doubled and matched Jackson’s two-RBI output as Cavotta scored twice. Meanwhile, Cazenovia was back in action Thursday against Homer, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning but struggling from there in a 12-2 defeat to the Trojans. Homer scored in every inning except the second, getting a home run, two doubles and three RBIs from Alexandra Kellaway. Paige Reilley and Luka Galle drove in the Lakers’ runs, with Mya Skeele and Lucy Bliss scoring them.
