L’pool beats ESM, West Genny by Phil Blackwell

Establishing itself as the favorite in the Section III Class AA picture, the Liverpool softball team continued to put together impressive efforts during its most crowded stretch of the season. Liverpool had started the week with 7-2 win over East Syracuse Minoa last Monday that featured another late-game comeback. For five innings, Spartans pitcher Olivia Goff had stymied the Warriors, but it changed in the top of the sixth when Liverpool batted around and struck for all of its runs. Mackenzie Frani, the winning pitcher, also had an RBI in that decisive sixth, joining Joelle Wike, Lily Stevens, Cassie Wiggins and Ava Falvo driving in runs. Stevens was the only Liverpool batter with two hits off Goff. This momentum carried over into a doubleheader sweep of West Genesee a day later. A close opening game went 4-2 in Liverpool’s favor, Wiggins striking out 12 and limiting the Wildcats to five hits. Lauren Ragonese had two hits at the plate as she, along with Joelle and Julia Wike, drove in runs. It was far more lopsided in the second game, the Warriors bashing WG 14-4 as Frani pitched, struck out eight and also had three hits and three RBIs. Wiggins went four-for-four, scored three times and drove in three runs. Joelle Wike’s trio of hits led to two RBIs as Gracie Zankowski also got three hits and scored four runs. In Saturday’s action at Carrier Park, Liverpool was shut out 7-0 by Section V’s Fairport, unable to get on the board despite earning six hits, two each by Stevens and Joelle Wike, one each by Frani and Lauren Ragonese. Next game Section II’s Ballston Spa, who also managed to beat the Warriors 7-0. Wiggins struck out six, but Liverpool again could not get a run, even with Julia Wike going three-for-three. Cicero-North Syracuse was still going through its fair share of struggles, symbolized by last Thursday’s 13-0 defeat to Baldiwnsville at the Gillette Road complex. A five-run first inning got the Bees in front, and it kept adding to the margin, notching 17 hits. Bella Nazdan went five-for-five and scored five runs as Leah VerSchneider’s double and two singles led to five RBIs. Even better was the way B’ville pitcher Taylor Tripodi shut down the Northstars, limiting it to just one hit, by Sydney Puttkamer, and four walks while

Liverpool pitcher Cassie Wiggins (44) delivers during last Tuesday’s doubleheader against West Genesee. Wiggins struck out 12 as the Warriors defeated the Wildcats 4-2 in this game and 14-4 in the other game. recording 10 strikeouts. Like Liverpool, C-NS would also play twice Saturday, but do so at the Mudville Sports Complex, where it split those games. Against Fontbonne Hall Academy, a private school from Brooklyn, C-NS won 22-4, peaking with a nine-run second inning, but it lost the other game 11-0 to Section II’s Ichabod Crane.

VFW Auxiliary to hold ‘Flamingo Flocking’ fundraiser By Ashley M. Casey Associate Editor

Lori Newcomb

Syracuse roots-and-blues singer Colin Aberdeen performed at the Syracuse Food Truck Association’s #SYRFoodTrucksTakeover at Great Northern Mall in Clay on May 11.

If you happen to wake up to a bunch of flamingos in your yard next month, don’t fret: you’ve just been flocked. Throughout June, the Cicero Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is holding a “Flamingo Flocking” fundraiser. Donors can pay to prank their friends with a 48-hour invasion of plastic flamingos. “Flockees” can pay to have the kitschy birds removed — and even relocated to another unsuspecting homeowner’s lawn. Organizer Cathy Barling said the idea hatched when she participated in a similar fundraiser for the Gillette Road Middle School ParentTeacher Group several years ago. “We probably had maybe 25, 30 people that we flocked,” she recalled. “I just went on the internet and looked for fundraisers for schools.” A squad of volunteers planted the

flamingos at dusk, and most of the “flockees” were good sports about it. Onlookers got a kick out of it as well, Barling said. “Usually nobody was home [when we did it] but neighbors saw us and said, ‘Oh, that’s a great idea — can I donate?’” she said. Barling floated the flamingo concept to the Cicero VFD Auxiliary, and they agreed it was a fun idea. You can arrange for a flocking of a house in the Cicero-North Syracuse area (no businesses or apartment complexes) for $10. If you have been flocked, you can pay $10 for a “trained technician” to remove the flock early or relocate it elsewhere. Flamingo flocking insurance to safeguard your home from future flamingo invasions is available for $10. The flocking calendar is filling up quickly, so the auxiliary encourages interested donors to contact Barling as soon as possible at 315-699-3160 or cathy.barling@cicerofd.org.

The story goes that Roberta fell for Bobby Johnson in kindergarten, where he won her over with a candy bar. Roberta worked briefly for the New York Telephone Company until Bob proposed. With their children onto their independent lives, Bob and Berta sold their LaFayette Road home and Skaneateles camp that had belonged to Bob’s parents, to purchase a year-round home closer to the village on East Lake Road. When Bob retired from the business his dad founded, BR Johnson (& Son), they sold the East Lake home and moved across the lake to a smaller year-round home. During the Skaneateles years, Roberta delivered Meals on Wheels, ready with a meal and her warm smile to those on her route. After Bob’s passing in 2002, Roberta was able to continue enjoying her lakeside home, tending her flower baskets and endless enjoyment watching the

McMahon announces departure of County Health Commissioner

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon recently announced the departure of Onondaga County Health Commissioner Dr. Indu Gupta. For the last seven and a half years, Gupta has led the county health department through several public health crises and secured the departments’ first accreditation from the National Public Health Accreditation Board. “Onondaga County has been incredibly lucky to have had the leadership and guidance of Dr. Gupta for the last seven and a half years,” McMahon said. “She has served as a trusted advisor, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am eternally grateful for her service. Dr. Gupta has admirably led one of the biggest departments in County government and she leaves big shoes to fill, but I know we will always be able to rely on her for her advice and counsel.” Gupta has been a trusted source in our community in all matters related to public health. She has led the health department with transparency and a focus on public engagement. Among her many accomplishments includes two brand new public health programs to address the opioid crisis and a tri-county tobacco prevention program as well as securing recurring funding for the programs.

Gupta made every decision with a focus on the overall mission of the health department which is to improve and protect the health of our community in collaboration with community partners to address and improve the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of the community. She passionately believes in the value of respect, excellence, accountability, collaboration and equity when it comes to addressing matters of public health. She took her leadership and advocacy to the state level when she became president of the New York State Association of County Health Officials. Under her leadership, NYSACHO secured increased reimbursement for Article 6 public health programs in the New York State Budget which will result in savings of local dollars. Gupta’s last day will be July 1. There will now be a nationwide search to find a new Health Commissioner. “In partnership and collaboration with our many partners in the health field, we will begin a nationwide search to find our next health commissioner,” McMahon said. “Dr. Gupta leaves an incredibly strong and robust Health Department and I am forever thankful for her service and commitment to our community.”

The jazziest Jazz Fest ever! 36th Syracuse Jazz Festival blends bebop, funk & fusion downtown, June 23-25 By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer

L

ast staged five years ago in 2017 at Onondaga Community College, the Syracuse Jazz Festival is back in 2022, and it will return to downtown Syracuse, June 23, 24 and 25. As usual, admission will be free. “Jazz Fest is moving back downtown to Clinton Square Friday and Saturday and at area night spots on Thursday,” said founder and artistic director Frank Malfitano, one of Central NY’s most prominent impresarios. This year will mark the festival’s first time back downtown after 20 years at other venues.

Malfitano is especially proud of this year’s jazz-centric programming. “In order to grow festival audiences to attract sponsors, many jazz festivals have been forced to veer away from programming jazz, the music they’re supposed to be representing,” he said. “But this year Syracuse Jazz Fest has returned to its jazz roots in a big way with 28 of our 30 acts, artists and groups being 100 percent jazz.” When Clinton Square hosted the Syracuse Jazz Fest in the 1990s, it drew thousands of people each year. That scenario is likely to be repeated as the main-stage headliners feature saxophonist David Sanborn’s Electric Band, pioneering bebop vocalist Sheila Jordan and the Scottish funk septet the Average White Band on Friday.

Downtown venues will be hoppin’ on opening night

More than 100 local musicians and groups including national recording artists Nancy Kelly, Ronnie Leigh and Bob Holz & A Vision Forward will perform on opening night as part of this year’s Syracuse Jazz Fest on Thursday, June 23 in downtown Syracuse. Twenty CNY-based jazz groups will be showcased at 20 different venues that day to kick off this year’s festival. “The Syracuse jazz scene has so much incredible talent, we wanted to do everything we could to showcase our homegrown stars at Jazz Fest 36 for all of the out-of-town visitors and guests who will be coming in from all over the U.S. and Canada,” said festival Director Frank Malfitano. “Syracuse has had so many great jazz musicians and artists over the years, and they all deserve to be seen and heard by a wider audience. With more than 100 Syracuse jazz artists appearing on our stages and thousands of visitors expected to attend, this year’s programming may prove to be our finest ever.” Participating opening-night venues include the Press Room Pub, Pastabilities, The Fitz, Mulrooney’s, Benjamin’s on Franklin, Clinton Street Pub, Saltine Warrior, Tasting Room at Epicuse, Modern Malt, The Gilded Club, Kitty Hoyne’s, Funk’n’Waffles, Wunderbar, The Weighlock Lounge, Bar and Board, Redfield’s, King of Clubs, The Corner Bar, Kasai and the grand mezzanine of the Landmark Theatre; syracusejazzfest.com Eagle Newspapers entertainment writer Russ Tarby recommends: 4 p.m. Joe Davoli’s Hot Club of Syracuse at Kitty Hoyne’s. 5 p.m. The DiCosimo-Pagan Latin Jazz at Wunderbar. 6 p.m. The Carol Bryant Quartet at The Gilded Club. 7 p.m. E.S.P. at The Corner Bar 8 p.m. Jeff Stockham’s Jazz Horn Legacy Sextet at the Press Room Pub 9 p.m. The Jazz Mafia at King of Clubs.

Saxophonist David Sanborn fronts his Electric Band at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 24 the Syracuse Jazz Festival’s main stage in Clinton Square. And on Saturday, Louisiana’s Zydeco Cha-Chas take the stage before Massachusetts saxophonist Boney James followed by former 5th Dimension singers Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. The festival was last staged at Clinton Square in 2000, when headliners Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, Pete Fountain and Diana Krall drew an overflow crowd estimated at more than 35,000. New York State 127th District Assemblyman Al Stirpe was among them. “The best thing I can remember from years ago when I used to come to Jazz Fest downtown was how many people would be here visiting after the shows,” Stirpe said April 19 as Malfitano announced this year’s headliners. “They’d go to the bars and restaurants,” Stirpe said. “There’d be more music there. Everybody stayed downtown for a long time, spent a lot of money and I think that’s really the best thing we can do right now.” Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse have each pledged $125,000 to support this year’s 36th ever festival, and Malfitano also secured another $150,000 for a new presenting sponsor, Amazon.com. “We couldn’t possibly be more grateful to New York state, Onondaga County, the City of Syracuse, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and Amazon for bringing Syracuse Jazz Fest back to downtown Syracuse this June,” Malfitano said. “We’re all thrilled to see this longtime Syracuse summertime tradition coming back, and that would simply not have been possible without Amazon’s support.”

The CNY Diaper Bank is a volunteer-run nonprofit that was founded in May 2016 after local mother Michela Hugo learned that agencies in the area were forced to turn away families in need of diapers. Hugo used the support and guidance of the National Diaper Bank Network to start a diaper bank in Syracuse. Though diapers are an essential need for babies, they are not covered by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or by Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits. Since an adequate supply of diapers for a single child can cost $100 per month, diapers become an expense many families can’t afford. For more information about the CNY Diaper Bank and diaper need, please visit cnydiaperbank.org.

All funds raised will go directly toward diaper purchases to support local families in need. To double the impact, donations will be matched up to $10,000, thanks to a grant awarded by The John Ben Snow Foundation & Memorial Trust. “Diaper need is an overlooked consequence of poverty that affects thousands of babies and families in our community. This ongoing hardship takes a tremendous mental toll on mothers and guardians who only want to take care of their babies,” said Michela Hugo, founder of the CNY Diaper Bank. “A donation to the CNY Diaper Bank can provide comfort to babies, peace of mind to mothers and the op-

Back to basics

Organizations like Mental Health America and the National Alliance on Mental Health among others, are working hard to let people know they are not alone, particularly during the month of May. According to Mental Health America, mhanational.org, since 1949, Mental Health America and its affiliates across the country have observed Mental Health Month each May. Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the Mental Health America organization, then known as the National Association for Mental Health. These organizations, NAMI and MHA, have worked to reach out to millions of people through various outlets like media, local events and social media to raise awareness about mental illness, as well as show those who are living with their mental illness that there is support and many people interested in lending a helping hand. According to Mental Health America, the past few years living with COVID19, has changed so much. From people living with limited contact or no contact with other people for significant periods of time along with concerns over personal health and the health of others, there have been factors that may have made many people feel alone, isolated, depressed or may have exacerbated other mental health conditions. This informed the theme for this year’s awareness campaign. According to mhanational.org this year, the theme of MHA’s 2022 Mental Health Month Toolkit is “Back to Basics.” “After the last two years of pandemic living, many people are realizing that stress, isolation, and uncertainty have taken a toll on their well-being,” the website said. “Our goal is to provide foundational knowledge about mental health and mental health conditions and information about what people can do if their mental health is a cause for concern.” But, according to Mental Health America, the stigmas associated with mental illness often keep people from seeking help when they need it even under normal circumstances, and the past few years of the pandemic may have only made that worse according to the organization. For Mental Health America, an important first step to reaching people is sharing information. Mental Health America, NAMI and other organizations are utilizing their websites and other outlets to reach out to people and share information, strategies and resources for people who may be going through a difficult time. Information on topics like stress management, healthy eating, exercise and building a support network among many other topics are available on these organizations’ websites. According to Mental Health America while 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime, everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health. With this in mind MHA’s Tools 2 Thrive series provides information, tips, and practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency regardless of the situations they are dealing with. This portion of the organization’s website has information on connecting with others, supporting others and eliminating toxic influences among many other topics that could be useful for those seeking information. These organizations are using this time to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health and acknowledging that it’s OK to not be OK in an effort to help remove the stigmas around mental health. For more information visit mhanational.org/mental-health-month or nami. org. Anyone who may need immediate help is encouraged to contact healthcare professionals as soon as possible.

How do we wage peace? It’s difficult not to think about war. The awfulness of what is happening in Ukraine permeates so much of what we hear and how we profess support from wearing blue and yellow ribbons to making a donation to a reputable organization. Why is it that war is so pervasive among our species? Is there some set of genes, a meshing of DNA that propels us to solve problems by sending our young men and women to shed their blood for often very enigmatic reasons? I’m thinking of the Russian mothers whose sons are dying for the ego of one man and the Ukrainian men and women who have had to become soldiers in a war not of their making. If you examine any textbook of American History, it is laid out in what we call the war cycle. You study the ramifications of the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, the

struction of port cities and the blockage of ports will have a detrimental effect on not only Ukraine but all of the countries that import that wheat. While young men and women are dying in Ukraine, others will suffer in places like Africa and other countries that are facing multiyear droughts have come to depend on the import of Ukrainian wheat. Think of the stress on the resources of the countries that have accepted the millions of Ukrainians who have fled their homeland. What adjustments will European countries make that depend on Russian oil and gas? And we know that this war has had a fallout effect on the price of gas here as well as a powerful prod to inflation. Is there something about homo sapiens that tends to lead us into aggressive rather than thoughtful, diagnostic, problem-solving behavior? Does our focus

War of 1812, The Civil War, the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War and all the “in-betweens” wars. War becomes the criteria for learning who we are. Were there not other things going on? Were not inventions being made? Books written. Laws crafted to modify everyday life? Epidemics? Were there not beautiful works of art, plays, poems created? Of course, but they become the less important events, happenings, etc. because war eats up so much of everyday life, modifying economics, geography, the lives of our young men and women, etc. War changes so much because of the way that we spend not only the lives of the combatants, but the consumption of other resources. Take Ukraine again. As the breadbasket of Europe, as an exporter of wheat, the inability to plant or harvest, to export because of the de-

on adversarial relationships represent just another version of aggression? Even some of our sporting events are surrogates for aggression, for bloodless (although sometimes getting hurt happens) war? Does the rise of bullying among school children or the current creation of “us and them” around political parties say something? The armed insurrection on Jan. 6 says a lot about that. Ask yourself, who has created the division that loom so clearly among us? Who is benefitting from divisiveness . Does the term “divide and conquer” ring any bells? How have we come to the situation where nations have to commit substantial portions of their budgets to the creation of defensive and offensive weaponry? Why isn’t the truth of international relationships one Peace

From the supervisor: Spring has sprung By Janet Aaron Skaneateles Town Supervisor

Finally, spring arrived last week, and we were more than ready to get out the lawnmowers and visit our local greenhouses and watch all the kids enjoy their spring sports. There never seems enough time in the day to get everything done. Longer days and sunnier skies present plenty of opportunities to get out and about. With people enjoying the fresh air and exercising outdoors, there will be an increase in foot and cycling traffic. That’s why the town is asking you to do your part in obeying the speed limit, slow down and drive safely.

You all know by now that the swap shop has moved to a new, more accessible location at the transfer station and each week Amy Rolleri and her dedicated volunteers make sure useable items stay out of the waste stream and are repurposed in another home. The town board is holding our meetings in person and by Zoom. Meetings are typically the first and third Monday of each month but there are exceptions if a holiday falls on our meeting date. The town website at townofskaneateles.com/calendar/ will keep you informed on what is on the agenda for all town meetings. Please be sure to check skanlakeinfo.org that is continually being updated with additional lake data.

The town boat launch at Mandana and the NYSDEC boat launch on Rt. 41A are both open for the season. There is a fee $20 to park at town’s parking lot in Mandana for nonresidents. There is no charge for residents with a valid transfer station tag or proof of residence (pay town of Skaneateles taxes). Memorial Day encompasses pride that comes with being an American. On May 30, people across our nation will make it a point to remember and honor the many sacrifices of our military service members who have given their lives to fight for our country. Sending heartfelt wishes on Memorial Day.

‘American Pickers’ are headin’ this way! The History Channel’s “American Pickers” are hittin’ the road and headin’ our way! Host Mike Wolfe and his brother, Robbie, are lookin’ to buy some “rusty gold” right here in Central NY. The popular antiques-oriented TV program plans to return to the Empire State in August. “So we’re looking for leads throughout the state,” said Jasmina Joseph, Cineflix Media producer based in Manhattan. “We’re specifically seeking interesting characters with fascinating items and lots of them.”

Seeking ‘rusty gold’

Over the course of the season, “American Pickers” scour the country for hidden gems in junkyards, basements, garages and barns, meeting quirky characters along the way. Part antique experts and part cultural historians, they have a knack for finding forgotten treasures in unusual places. So if you have an estate sale planned or you want to divest yourself of all that old stuff up in the attic, or if you have a personal collection of vintage toys, games, ephemera, signs or motorcycle parts you’re ready to sell…contact “American Pickers” at americanpickers@cineflix.com or by calling 646-493-2184. Include your full name, city/state, contact information, and a brief description of the items. The producers seek private collections only; commercial retailers will not be considered.

Livin’ in Liverpool

Land of Broken Dreams

It’s too bad that Bob Smith passed away Russ Tarby 14 years ago. A proud member of “Liverpool Heid’s Boys,” Smith and his family ran a septic serves for a half-century, but he was better known as the creator of “The Land of Broken Dreams,” a funky sculpture garden on his property at 163 Duerr Road. Because his collection of whirlygigs, commercial signage and primitive folk art could be seen by motorists traveling west on the NYS Thruway, he became known as the Bird Man of Exit 38. Debra Jane Seltzer, the author of “Vintage Signs of America,” reports that Smith’s ambitious found-artwork “is now in disarray.” On her website, roadarch.com, she runs several photos snapped there in 2001, seven years before Bob died at age 75. His widow, Elma Gerhardt Smith, followed him in death in 2016. “Smith used found and natural objects, hung decorations from logs, created pathways from old carpeting and made small buildings which he used to house rabbits and birds,” Seltzer wrote. “I don’t believe that anyone is maintaining it.” Otherwise, it would’ve made for a perfect destination for the “American Pickers.”

Not all of us bet

Taking full advantage of a torrid opening pace and saving his best speed for the homeRandom stretch, he tore down the rail, passed the two front-runners, and sped under the finish line Thoughts first in the Kentucky Derby. Phil Blackwell Rich Strike was his name. And he wasn’t even in the field until the night before. He was sent off at odds of 80-1. So if by some crazy chance you had the exacta with second-place Epicenter, it paid $4,100. Get the trifecta? Nearly 15 grand. And whoever stole the DeLorean, took the sports almanac and figured out the top four…well, you took home $320,000 and should never, ever have to bet on anything again. Here was a rare, and welcome, instance where explaining the odds and payouts made perfect sense, because they were so absurd. Almost like those 5,000-to-1 odds that Leicester City would win the Premier League in 2015-16 – if 100 people said they did, chances are 99 (at least) are not telling the truth. Ah, but those are blissful exemptions to what has turned into a terrifying tsunami of having every second of sports coverage smothered in references to over/unders, point spreads and payoffs. Tune into a game, any game. Within minutes they’re advertising for a sports book or a daily fantasy game, the action within the action, as if the contest itself isn’t reason enough to watch. Cut to the commercials – oh, the commercials. It isn’t just the enticements to bet. It’s the superstars. Drew Brees here, the Manning family there, Wayne Gretzky (!), one legend after another telling you that the only real way to enjoy sports is to plunk down dollars or various types of virtual currency. Don’t expect a refuge on pregame shows. Tuning into ESPN’s “College Gameday” one Saturday last fall, it seemed like half the time was spent expounding on the odds of games, and not, you know, the games. On one level, I get it. Without question, a portion of the audience only tunes in to see how their bets turned out. That’s held true for decades and no amount of tut-tutting will change that reality – you ever seen those big rooms in Vegas where dozens of games are on big screens? We know why. Something has turned, though. With states beyond Nevada legalizing sports books, every elected official searching for revenue streams other than taxes have jumped on the betting bandwagon. Just like how they once trumpeted state lotteries, the bait is selling the dream of quick riches. That only a very few get them, while millions sink into debt, is a truth only uncovered through time. And where once bettors had to shuffle off to an OTB or a racetrack to get their fix, now all it takes is a couple of taps of the phone, the right app and, presto, hundreds, thousands or more are won or, more often, lost. It’s all an addiction, really. Sports leagues, government bodies and organizations are addicted to seeking as many profits as they can. People then pick up those habits, some of them might find a little success and, inevitably. Want to win bigger, only to find out, too late, that they’re sinking in the kind of losses that can’t get made up. Sad to say, it will likely require masses of people getting into trouble before most of us will wake up to the danger of leaving too much of our sports at the mercy of gambling. Long before the Internet and cell phones, a group of Chicago White Sox agreed to throw the 1919 World Series. Paul Hornung and Alex Karras got suspended. College basketball in New York City nearly got destroyed by point-shaving. Pete Rose, enough said. Somewhere in this era without rules (the Wild West analogy is tiresome), a major sports event will get affected by the billions getting thrown around at sports books or daily fantasy games. All it takes is one or two vulnerable athletes, plus one or two unscrupulous types, to author a disaster. Either that, or everyone involved in sports, at all levels, will wise up to the flood of gambling they have unleashed. Profits do not lead to honor. Usually, it goes the other way. For those who don’t know, Unified basketball is an inclusive athletic program in which the teams are made up of a mixture of typical kids and kids with special needs. Boys and girls play on the same teams. Usually, there are three special needs kids and two typical kids on the court at any given time. They act as rebounders and passers, setting up their teammates with special needs for crowd-pleasing buckets. For the most part, the refs swallow the whistle and let the kids do what they need to do to succeed. Dribbling? That’s optional. Stiff defense? It’s discouraged. Cheering for the home team? Absolutely! But you’ll find yourself cheering for the away team just as hard. Winning is nice, but giving kids who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance to participate on a team an opportunity to feel that spirit of camaraderie is more important. You’ve never seen joy like the smile on the face of a person who hears an adoring crowd chanting her name for the first time. If you can watch a young man with Downs Syndrome howl with happiness after hitting a three-pointer without a little tear welling up in your eyes, you’re a stronger person than I am. Your heart will sing when you see a kid with autism, usually so emotionally opaque, pump his fist and gleefully high five his teammates after sinking a shot. Last Thursday afternoon, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt Unified teams squared off at F-M. The final score indicated that F-M had won, but all

the kids on both teams showed themselves to be winners. As the game wore on, the stands filled up. Full teams of student athletes who had finished their practices piled into the bleachers to root on their classmates. Parents, teachers, siblings, classmates all joined in cheering on kids who in past generations would never have gotten this chance to shine in the spotlight. As the clock ticked down in the fourth quarter, F-M’s Stella Barlow found herself with the ball underneath the basket. The J-D defenders cleared away to give Stella a clear shot, but try as she might, all her attempts fell short of the rim. With an assist from the student clock operators, who stopped the clock before the final seconds ticked away, senior Michael OuYang hoisted Stella up toward the rim. With the crowd chanting her name, she made that final shot and the gym erupted with joy. A few seconds later, the buzzer sounded and the crowd spilled out on the court to congratulate the players from both teams. Everyone in the gym wore a smile. As I left the high school and walked to my car, I thought about the kids in the stands cheering on their classmates and the kids on the court doing everything they could to ensure the students with special needs succeeded. This next generation, I thought, they’re going to be just fine. Editor’s note: Many Unified teams have wrapped up their seasons, but a few game remain, including: CNS @ ESM, May 19 at 4 p.m.; Cazenovia @ F-M, May 20 at 4:30 p.m.; Chittenango @ J-D, May 20 at 4:30 p.m.; F-M @ Cortland, May 23 at 4:30 p.m.

Does your golf game suffer because… * You know you have the potential but you just can’t perform over an entire round? * You are fearful of embarrassing yourself in front of your friends or playing partners? * You have trouble bringing your game from the driving range to the first tee? * You have several good holes only to blow up on 2-4 holes to ruin your round? * You make too many silly mistakes? * You struggle with your putting and chipping yips? * You can’t seem to focus for an entire round of golf? If you answer “yes” to any of questions above, don’t feel like the Lone Ranger. Sooner or later, all golfers suffer the same consequences with their golf game. Bad shots are just part of the game…from PGA Tour players to someone who picks up a club for the first time. Think back on the times you have hit a ball fat and chunked it into a pond or creek. How about the hundreds of times you missed a two and a half foot putt or three putted from 10 feet. Let’s not forget the balls you hit out of bounds with a 60 yard wide fairway in front of you or hit the dreaded “shank”… dead right into the bunker. They all add up to “silly, fearful, embarrassing, lack of focus or an angry reaction” to the bad shot. I have often said to beginning golfers as well as accomplished amateurs…”Success in golf is directly related to what you do, after you screw up”. They have coached players on the LPGA Tour, PGA Tour, European Tour, Ladies European Tour and Japan Tour to over one hundred tour victories…including ten different major winners and four #1 ranked players in the world. They are also the authors of four best selling books on golf. Their thoughts about those bad shots and angry reactions is spot on. They say, “The more you replay it, the more prominent the memory becomes. Because of those negative reactions, your brain starts to associate golf shots with something scary, something to

That’s what you should evaluate, not the shot’s result”. Next time I will honor my gut”. And how should we react after hitting a good shot? They say, “When you do something well, you should celebrate for about 15 seconds, even if it’s just internally. Anything from great, to good, to good enough, you need to recognize and take in and be proud of it”. They also recommend talking about your good shots after your round because, “If I practice reminding myself of the good shots and what I do when I hit good shots, it’s going to be easier to repeat them more often”. Liverpool, C-NS boys both fall to West Genesee by Phil Blackwell

When the Cicero-North Syracuse boys lacrosse team staged its memorable comeback to top Liverpool in overtime on May 6, the question was how that result might affect all which would follow. In Liverpool’s case, the answer partially arrived when it tried to avenge an earlier defeat to West Genesee last Tuesday night and, instead, fell 8-7 to the Wildcats. That it was just as close as their 11-10 decision on April 21 wasn’t surprising. Both sides played strong defense early, but in the second quarter WG outscored the Warriors 4-2 to take a 5-3 edge to the break. Stepping up its own defense, Liverpool kept the Wildcats off the board in the third period, converting twice and getting back even, 5-5. That set up a tense stretch drive where WG would go back in front, and hang on. Jackson Furr and Dom Osbeck each scored twice, Furr getting two assists and Osbeck one assist. Aaron Clouthier had one goal and one assist. Owen Michaud and Jalen Graham had the other goals. WG featured six different goal-scorers, with only Liam Burns and Patrick Linton converting twice. Owen Salanger’s 16 saves kept it close as he doubled the total of Wildcats counterpart Dylan Desena. Now Liverpool would face reigning sec-

tional Class A champion Baldwinsville two nights later, and would ultimately end up with the same result as their April 26 encounter, which was tied at halftime before the Warriors saw the Bees get away. Here, the final score was 13-8, an identical margin to the 15-10 score of the first meeting, Liverpool a bit stingier but still unable to keep up with the Bees’ pace and all-around game. Meanwhile, at Mike Messeere Field, C-NS took its own shot against West Genesee and seemed to have things in control, only to have it slip away in a painful 9-8 defeat. All through the first half, the Northstars’ defense shut down the Wildcats, but though it had modest success on offense, it could only muster a 4-0 advantage. WG got on the board in the third quarter and cut C-NS’s margin into half, to 6-4, and then sprinted out in front late as Liam Burns scored three times in the final period, four goals overall. Mason Blakeman and Mason Ciciarelli each scored three times for the Northstars, Blakeman adding a pair of assists. The other goals went to Elijah Martin and Mike Koehler. C-NS recovered on Saturday and romped past East Syracuse Minoa 20-6, spreading out its attack as six different players put up multiple goals. It was Carter and Kohler stepping up, each scoring four times to set personal season marks. Ciciarelli and Blake-

Leahey got two goals and two assists, Martin and Jack Oswald also finding

the net twice. Cy Liberman and Emmit Porter had single goals.

C-NS, Liverpool track battle again C-NS baseball tops Liverpool twice by Phil Blackwell

A mere 48 hours after they battled one another at Bragman Stadium, the CiceroNorth Syracuse and Liverpool track and field teams had a rematch of sorts. It took place at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium where Friday’s Baldwinsville John Arcaro saw the boys Northstars get 61 points, trailing only the host Bees (74 points), while in the girls meet it was the Warriors second with 65 points and C-NS fourth with 55 points. Doing well in relays, C-NS prevailed in the 4x400 when Dan Henry, Josh Adams, James McConnell and Gavin McAllister finished in three minutes, 33.68 seconds, well clear of the 3:36.92 from Fayetteville-Manlius. Another win for the Northstars came in the 4x800 relay, where McAllister, Nathan Connors, Ashton Murdock and Dante Melfi went 8:19.40 to top the field, Liverpool finishing sixth in 9:22.69 after taking fifth (3:54.26) in the 4x400. McAllister cleared 10 feet 6 inches for fifth place in the pole vault. Carlton Garnes had a secondplace long jump of 20’8 1/2” and was second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.79 seconds to the 14.97 from Jamesville-DeWitt’s Nick Dekaney, while Melfi got second in the 800-meter run in 2:03.37. Trevon Walker took sixth in the 100meter dash in 11.57 seconds and, with Garnes, Adams and Andrew Vinette, earned third place in the 4x100 relay in 45.59 seconds, just ahead of Liverpool (45.83) in fifth place. Liverpool, meanwhile, saw Ny’Quez Madison arrive in the long jump and, with a top attempt of 20’9 1/2”, beat Garnes by one inch. Joe Guindy throw the discus 107’2” to take sixth place as Andrew Corrigan got sixth in the

3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:00.61. Liverpool won on the girls side in the 4x400, seeing Kaitlyn Burt, Lena Young, Taylor Page and Emily Aiello post 4:18.38 to edge the 4:18.95 from B’ville. In the 4x100, the Warriors had Mikayla Greene, Sophia Jarosz, Janea Hamilton-Brown and Mia Wright second in 51.57 seconds, with C-NS (54.12) sixth. Page, Kaleigh Buck, Eva Woodworth and Addison Ziegler took second in the 4x800 relay in 10:17.89, with C-NS fourth in 10:47.11. Page also took third in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.75, with Young (1:04.04) in sixth place. Burt took third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.14. Meghan Moyer grabbed fourth place in the 2,000 steeplechase in 7:56.16 and Hamilton-Brown threw the shot put 30’11” to finish fifth. Deidre Wiliams was fifth in the discus with 79’6” and Beatrize Gurgol was fourth in the triple jump (32’8 1/4”) and fifth in the long jump. On C-NS’s side, Hannah Boyle went 2:10.39, pulling away from Jordan-Elbridge’s Vassi Klock (2:13.00) to prevail in the 800, with Kaleigh Bosimenu getting second in the discus (87’9”) to go with a seventh in the shot put. C-NS boys tennis shuts out Liverpool by Phil Blackwell

It’s fair to say that the Cicero-North Syracuse boys tennis team is enjoying one of its best seasons in program history, capped by the sweep it pulled off over main rival Liverpool. Having already defeated the Warriors 5-2 on April 28, the Northstars were even better in the rematch, not letting the Warriors get a point on the board on the way to a 7-0 shutout. The singles matches were all lopsided, Wyatt Dupell putting away Mason Pinchin 6-0, 6-0 as Matthew Jordan stopped John Ioannidis 6-1, 6-1 and Brandon Nguyen rolling past Jimmy Bui 6-0, 6-1. Liverpool put up far more of a fight in doubles, where Aiden Hunter and Andrew Caimano got to a third set with C-NS’s Ryan Keil and Peter Geil, but the Northstars pair still won it 6-3, 6-7 (10-8), 6-2. Dan Jordan and Brady Petranchuk won 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 over James Welch and William Balduf, with Timothy Mai and Joe DeGroat handling Brett Ritter and Anthony Ranieri 6-3, 6-1 as Mike DeGroat and Andrew George worked past Evan Miller and Cole Potrzeba 6-4, 6-1. C-NS did not find the same success against unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius a day later, the Northstars shut out 7-0 by the Hornets. Keil, going to singles, did make a second-set tiebreaker against Xavier Sul, but still lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) as F-M gave up just one game in four doubles matches, with Nguyen and Matthew Jordan only picking up a game apiece in their singles defeats. But C-NS turned it around

Wednesday in a 6-1 win over West Genesee, with Dupell blanking Nathan Smith 6-0, 6-0 and Matthew Jordan putting away Ian Palmieri 6-1, 6-0 as Nguyen beat John Diem 6-0, 6-1. Taking three of the four doubles matches, the Northstars had Mai and Joe DeGroat beat Josh Pierce and Sam Barth 6-0, 6-4, with Gill and Keil beating Barth and Nate Ruston 6-2, 6-1 as George and Mike DeGroat won 6-1, 6-0 over Jameson Bard and Tanner Young. When Liverpool met F-M on Wednesday, it was dealt its own 7-0 defeat, though Balduf nearly got a point in singles, pushing Sul to a third-set tie-breaker before losing 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6). Hunter and Caimano played the closest doubles match, falling to Justin Dunn and Kaelem Michel 6-2, 6-1. Then two matches followed on Thursday, Liverpool able to beat West Genesee 5-2 as Balduf and Potrzeba each won in singles in straight sets, with the doubles teams of Caimano-Welch, Raineri-Ritter and Jimmy BuiAydan Presley also gaining points. But Liverpool lost 7-0 to Baldwinsville. Raineri played the closest singles match , a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Logan Bolton. Caimano and Hunter played a close second set in doubles, but fell to Aidan Delaney and Zach Pendergast 6-0, 6-4. Another 7-0 defeat to the Bees followed a day later. C-NS lost a rematch with F-M 6-1 on Friday, at least getting a point when George and Mike DeGroat beat Anay Dalal and James Hoehner 6-3, 6-4. The Hornets swept the others, with Mai closest in singles as he lost 6-1, 6-3 to Sul.

Even as the Cicero-North Syracuse baseball team seemed to establish itself as the favorite for Section III Class AA honors, its rivals from Liverpool were starting to put things together. This made the two head-to-head meetings between the Northstars and Warriors late last week so important, even though it came at a busy time in the schedule, which may have affected how the games went. They first played Thursday at the Gillette Road complex, and it was all C-NS as it prevailed 18-1, setting the tone with a sixrun second inning where Jake Lukasiewicz hit a three-run home run and Logan Karwowski had a two-run triple. An eight-run fourth inning followed as Lukasiewicz finished with four RBIs, while Bryce Zicaro and Logan Battista joined Karowski in driving in a pair of runs. The rematch on Saturday at Liverpool figured to be a better game – and it was, with the Warriors in it all the way to th end, but C-NS again victorious, this time by a 5-3 margin. Down 1-0, Liverpool scored twice off Bryce Zicaro in the bottom of the second to briefly go in front before the Northstars tied it in the third and got two runs in the fourth for a 4-2 lead as Lukasiewicz and Corey Cartier both hit home runs and got two RBIs apiece. Liverpool cut it to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but Zicaro blanked the Warriors the rest of the way, only allowing four hits overall. Andrew Contos took the loss as Jack Hoppe and Lance Phillips drove in runs for the host. Zicaro again pitched well in a high-profile game as two key swings – one by Lukasiewicz, the other by Karwowski – produced a 5-1 win for the Northstars over Baldwinsville last Monday afternoon. In their first meeting April 22, C-NS won 1-0 when Zicaro threw a two-hitter. Now it was Gavin Miller on the mound for the Bees, who got a quick 1-0 lead when Cameron Brennan singled home Matt Carner in the top of the first inning. Miller kept it that way until the bottom of the fourth, when Lukasiewicz’s two-run single put C-NS in front. Then, in the

sixth with two on, Karwowski turned on a Miller pitch and sent it over the fence, a three-run home run. After surrendering that first-inning run, Zicaro blanked the Bees, striking out five and giving up just four hits and four walks before Wood worked the seventh inning in relief. C-NS was also impressive beating Class A contender Auburn 12-3 on Wednesday, scoring three runs in four different innings as Lukasiewicz, Cartier and Nick Klamm had two RBIs apiece, while Anthony Testa scored three runs. Liverpool met Christian Brothers Academy for the second time in five days – and again beat the Brothers, this time in a 3-2 decision. Building on the 1-0 win it had over CBA May 7, the Warriors saw pitcher Jack Hoppe give up six hits, but strike out seven and limit the potent Brothers offense to single runs in the first and sixth innings. Liverpool tied it 1-1 in the second and, with single tallies in the fifth and sixth, went ahead 3-1, ultimately staying in front as Sam Michalak drove in two of the runs and Charles Anthony doubled twice, adding an RBI. A day earlier, Liverpool faced West Genesee last Tuesday and, with steady offense and great pitching by Lucas Bradley, upended the Wildcats 8-3. After surrendering a two-run home run to Jake DePalma, Bradley blanked WG the rest of the afternoon, using solid defense to overcome the six hits he allowed. Steady at the plate, Liverpool managed a run in all six innings, capped by a three-run second that gave it the lead for good. Michalak and Chris Baker had two RBIs apiece, with Hoppe and Tyler Vivacqua also driving in runs. And in between the two games with C-NS, Liverpool rallied from a 6-0 deficit Friday to beat Fayetteville-Manlius 11-8, getting eight straight runs in the third through fifth innings and three runs in the seventh to break an 8-8 tie. The trio of Vivacaqua, Michalak and Anthony led the comeback, each of them earning three RBIs and combining for eight hits as Dylan Hograth got two hits and drove in a single run. Chris Baker got the win pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

C-NS girls lax beats West Genny, Westhill by Phil Blackwell

The Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse Thursday beat West Genesee 8-6. The Northstars trailed, 4-3, at halftime, but then netted three unanswered goals and moving in front before the Wildcats tied it again, 6-6. For the rest of the game, though, C-NS never let the Wildcats convert, so the pair of goals it scored four minutes apart down the stretch proved enough. Northstars Brooke Molchanoff, Mackenzie Prentice and Sophia Nesci scored twice, with single goals going to Tori Iannotti and Gabby Putman. Nicole Mirra, in goal, had seven saves. The Northstars, last Tuesday against Westhill, beat the Warriors 11-10. Westhill would make its push behind four goals from Kara Rosenberger and two-goal outings from Grace Winkler and Rosemary Mahoney. Matching those numbers, Iannotti led C-NS, scoring four times as Prentice and Molchanoff both got two goals. Nesci had a goal and two assists as Putman and Sam Klein also converted. Shea Firth earned an assist. Liverpool was in prime position midway through its own game with West Genesee, but could not hold on to its advantage, taking a 1210 defeat to the Wildcats. Fired up at the outset, Liverpool grabbed a 3-0 advantage, and then,

when WG threatened, restored the margin until it led 7-3 in the waning moments of the first half. Here, though, the Wildcats’ defense clamped down and kept the Warriors off the board for more than 10 minutes as it pulled even, 7-7. An exchange of goals followed until, at 9-9, consecutive goals by Julia Miller, Reis Pagan and Sophia Snyder gave WG the lead for good. Mia Berthoff netted three goals for Liverpool as Maggie Tifft, Gianna Carbone and Addyson Graham had two goals apiece. Michelle Sacco got the other goal, Clara Maracle earning nine saves. Liverpool Thursday lost 15-11 to Baldwinsville at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium. Tifft amassed five goals. Geary had three goals and one assist, while Carbone scored twice and added an assist. Berthoff had one goal and one assist. In another tight game on Saturday, Liverpool lost, 13-12, to Jamesville-DeWitt in double overtime, a game it led most of the way before the Red Rams rallied, forced the extra periods and then won it. Berthoff and Tifft both netted four goals, with Carbone and Caitlyn Guilfoil getting two goals apiece. Berthoff also had two assists and goalie Gianna Tantalo had eight saves. And all of this was before Liverpool would meet C-NS in Monday night’s regular-season finale at Bragman Stadium.
