Pride Fest, inaugural Pride Parade planned School budget approved, By kate Hill Staff Writer

This June, Cazenovia will celebrate Pride Month with the second annual Pride Fest Weekend from June 17-19. This year’s festivities were organized by Travis Barr, Meg Tobin, Lori Lewis, Alison Boissonnas, Kate Schwartz, and Tammy Tanner. Leading up to the celebration, Cazenovia Pride will present “Story Hour with Anita Buffem” in the Cazenovia Public Library (CPL) Community Room on Saturday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Barr, in drag as Buffem, will be reading two empowering children’s books, “Not Quite Narwhal” by Jessie Sima and “Dolls and Trucks are for Everyone” by Robb Pearlman. The event will also feature rainbow themed crafts. This story hour is not sponsored by CPL. “I think we all benefit from a feeling of being uplifted and loved,” said Barr. “No matter who you are, how you identify, or where you come from, you are important and have a very special place in this world. You are needed in this community, and what makes you unique is exactly what is needed here. My hope is that our local youth feel and believe that. The stats for suicide, homelessness, and trafficking disproportionately affect LGBTQ+ youth, and we can combat that by educating our community and most importantly by empowering all our kids.” On Thursday, June 16, Meier’s Creek Brewing Company will host “Drag Queen Bingo with Anita Buffem.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and games start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5, and all proceeds will benefit Caz Pride. Reserve tickets at hgreysupplyco.com. Pride Fest will officially begin on Friday, June 17, at 4:30 p.m., with “Reading with Purpose” at Purpose Coffee Co.

Reading with Purpose is a new, ongoing series of story times that allow families to connect over coffee and chocolate milk while the “Brew Crew” reads stories. The June 17 session will feature kidfriendly books related to Pride, as well as baked goods and coffee house drinks available for purchase. The event is free and open to all. The event will be followed by a “Pride Fest Family Kickoff ” at 6 p.m. at Madison County Distillery. On Saturday, June 18, at noon, Cazenovia’s first Pride Parade will assemble from 11 to 11:30 a.m. behind CPL. All are welcome to walk. Groups, businesses, and organizations can register at HGreySupplyCo.com/CazPride. The parade will step off at noon and make its way along Albany Street to Lakeland Park, where Buffem and DJ Amanda of We Heart CNY will host the Pride Fest celebration. The event will begin at 1 p.m. and feature performances, food trucks, lawn games, and the presentation of “The Amy Bradstreet Ally

Award” at 3 p.m. During last year’s festivities, the ally award was posthumously presented to former Cazenovia community member Amy Bradstreet, who was killed at her home in 2014. Bradstreet was the daughter of former Nelson Town Supervisor Roger Bradstreet and his wife, Bonnie. Barr created the award to honor Bradstreet and her family for the role they played in his youth and in shaping who he is today. “Amy made me feel like I was one of the cool kids,” he said. “She showed me that love abounds, and joy is abundant, you just have to choose it. She gave me a feeling of confidence and belonging that has stuck with me to this day. It is so important to continue Amy’s legacy by honoring another member of the community who radiates that positivity and support just by being who they are. Through honoring our allies, we not only thank them but also highlight how essential Pride

Post 88 shares Memorial Day plans Memorial Day began officially in 1868 after the conclusion of the Civil War to honor soldiers killed in that conflict. After World War I those memorialized began to include all military deaths in all conflicts in which the US military had fought. Today many Americans, many more who have served in any branch of the military and those who have lost loved ones in any conflict know the importance of honoring those who have “paid the last full measure of devotion” annually. That will be done on Memorial Day observed in Cazenovia on Mon-

day, May 30 with a parade and a program at Memorial (Cannon) Park. Parade - All those organizations/ units marching in the parade will line up in front of Cazenovia High School at 10 a.m. in the order of march designated by Post 88 member Kevin Murkowski. The parade will step off at 10:30 a.m. and will be led by the American Legion Post 88 Color Guard as usual. The parade will stop at Memorial Park at 11 a.m. for the program. Discussion of electric school buses continues By kate hill Staff writer

On May 17, the Cazenovia Central School District Board of Education (BOE) continued its discussion regarding New York’s commitment to electrify the state’s entire school bus fleet by 2035. The approved state budget includes a mandate requiring all new school bus purchases to be zero emission by 2027

and all school buses on the road to be electric by 2035. BOE member JoAnne Race initiated the conversation by requesting that the electric bus issue remain on the board’s radar. She noted that she has received inquiries from community members regarding the funding that might be available to facilitate the transition to electric. BOE President Dave Mehlbaum

announced that the April 27 edition of the Cazenovia Republican inaccurately quoted Assistant Superintendent/School Business Official Thomas Finnerty as stating that the May 17 school vote included a proposition for the purchase of three “diesel engine” buses. “In fact, there are not diesel buses being purchased or proposed,” Mehlbaum said. “. . . Groups team up to restore historic caz cemetery By kate Hill Staff Writer

On Saturday, May 14, over a dozen members of Cazenovia Heritage and Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF) completed the first stage of restoring the historic Farnham Cemetery off Grassy Lane Road in Cazenovia. Cazenovia Heritage is a community organization that seeks to conserve the area’s cultural resources, including the historic architecture, neighborhoods, sites, and objects that contribute to Cazenovia’s unique sense of place and character. Judith Hight, left, and Jennifer Parmalee earned seats on the Cazenovia Board of Education. By kate hill Staff writer On May 17, voters in the Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD) approved a proposed $34,372,000 school budget and two additional propositions. They also elected incumbent Jennifer Parmalee and newcomer Judith Hight to the CCSD Board of Education (BOE) The 2022-23 budget was approved by a vote of 720 to 377. The budget, which represents a 4.64 percent spending increase, is supported by a 2.33 percent tax levy increase, which is at the New York State tax levy limit. Residents also authorized the purchase of three 65-passenger replacement school buses (gas) at a total maximum cost of $347,883 and authorized the levy of a library tax to support the Cazenovia Public Library in the amount of $470,038.68 and the New Woodstock Free Library in the amount of $182,285 for a total of $652,323.68. The bus proposition was approved by a vote of 733 to 367, and the library proposition passed by a vote of 877 to 222. “As a school district, we cannot thank our community enough for their support of our students and schools,” said Superintendent Chris DiFulvio. “The results emphasize how vital our schools are to our community.” Three individuals ran for two BOE seats that are currently occupied by Parmalee and Kathy Hahn. Parmalee was reelected with 594 votes and Hight was elected with 721 votes. Jack Sessler, the third candidate, received 515 votes. “Thank you to the over 1,000 voters that showed up for our kids last night,” Parmalee said on May 18. “This community’s dedication to our children is tremendous. I am grateful for the public’s trust put in me to continue on the board and welcome new board member Judith Hight.” Hight also thanked the voters for their support. “The turnout of over a thousand people indicated that people were strongly invested in the future of our schools and were looking for a candidate that would make sure they had a place at the table,” she said. “I am very excited to begin my service to educators, kids and families in our district, forging stronger partnerships in the interest of success for every student.” The BOE is the official policy-making body of the school district. The board is composed of seven members who serve a three-year term of office without pay. Parmalee and Hight’s terms will begin at the July 11 reorganizational meeting. “Thank you to the community for supporting this year’s budget, as well as the proposition for the bus replacements,” said BOE President David Mehlbaum. “Congratulations to Jen Parmalee on her re-election and to Judith Hight for her election to the board.” BOE meetings are generally held on the third Monday of each month in the District Office in the Middle School. In the April 27 edition of the Cazenovia Republican, a story titled “BOE discusses state’s commitment to 100% electric buses by 2035” inaccurately quotes Assistant Superintendent/School Business Official Thomas Finnerty as stating that the May 17 school vote included a proposition for the purchase of three “diesel engine” school buses. In fact, the bus proposition, which was ultimately approved by a vote of 733 to 367, authorizes the purchase of three 65-passenger replacement gas buses at a total maximum cost of $347,883.

The team won six first place overall awards for dances in the following categories: junior/teen production number, teen contemporary group ages 13-15, petites acrobatics group ages six and under, junior jazz duet ages 11-12, junior jazz trio ages 9-10, and teen jazz trio ages 13-16. The abandoned cemetery, which is located on land adjacent to Beyer’s property, had many fallen tombstones covered in years of accumulated leaves and vegetation. According to Ferguson, Cazenovia Heritage thought the cemetery clean-up would be a good event for National Preservation Month, both in terms of preserving a historic site and providing recognition to some of Cazenovia’s earliest settlers. “When Anne approached me and asked if CPF might be interested in helping with this project, I thought it was a great idea,” said CPF Executive Director Jen Wong. “CPF’s dedicated stewardship volunteers are accustomed to doing work on trails and completing other maintenance projects on our properties. was an opportunity for them to put their skills to work and learn a little more about one of Cazenovia’s early families, while fulfilling an important aspect of our mission, which includes protecting the historical resources in and around Cazenovia for the benefit of the community.” The first stage of work involved sweeping the flattened tombstones clean and removing wild raspberries, honeysuckle, and other invasive brush. The second stage is scheduled for Oct. 16, 2022, when a few tombstones will be raised by a professional gravestone preservationist. “The goal is not to restore the cemetery as a pristine site, but to maintain its rural character, raise and protect the stones from further damage, and to restore some dignity and honor to its occupants,” explained Ferguson. I’ve made in my life joining the competition team.” On Saturday, May 21, Allure held its ninth annual recital. In June, the dancers will compete in a national competition in Atlantic City, New Jersey. To learn more about Allure, visit the studio’s Facebook page.

Jonathan Farnham (1779-1851) purchased the land on which the cemetery is located (Lot #20) in 1812. Eventually, Farnham was buried there with his wife, their five adult children, and two of their children’s spouses. Today, the cemetery can be found in the woods on its own unclaimed lot. The 33 graves represent just 10 families. “Most all of those buried here were either close friends or related to the Farnhams,” said Ferguson. The earliest grave is that of Lodema Cowles Tillotson (1787 - 1814), wife of Ephraim Tillotson (1786 – 1864) who purchased the neighboring Lot #22. Ephraim is buried with his three wives and his daughter Orange, who married George Atwell, grandfather of Christine Atwell (18871939), an author on Cazenovia history.

According to Ferguson, the oldest age represented in the cemetery is that of Rufus Lyon, 90, and the youngest is that of Laura Farnham, four months. Ferguson also highlighted the following cemetery occupants: Revolutionary War veteran Zenas Hays (1759-1837) and his wife, Sarah. Hays enlisted at age 17 as part of the Connecticut line and served nearly seven years. John M. Reed (1775 – 1845), who arrived in Cazenovia in 1821, and his wife and daughter. ‘Learn to Row’ event returns to Cazenovia Lake By kate Hill Staff Writer

On June 4, the annual Cazenovia Rowing Club (CRC) “Learn to Row” event will return after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. The free event, which is open to anyone age 18 to 90, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Gypsy Bay Park, located on Route 20 across from Lorenzo State Historic Site. During the three-hour workshop, participants will learn rowing terminology and the basics of the rowing stroke and spend time in a boat with experienced rowers. Attendees are encouraged to wear tight fitting pants, socks, and shoes that are easy to remove. Interested community members can preregister by visiting cazenovia.recdesk.com and clicking on “Programs.” Select “Sports” and

scroll down to “Rowing.” Active for nearly 30 years, CRC is a recreational and competitive club that provides community members of all experience levels with the opportunity to enjoy the sport of rowing. The club is a member of the United States Rowing Association and operates with oversight from the Town of Cazenovia and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Central Region. According to CRC President Mindy Holgate, the goal of the Learn to Row event is to introduce adults to rowing and hopefully help the club grow as a result. “[Rowing is] a sport that you can do well into your older years,” said Holgate. “It is a non-impact exercise, so even people with back and joint issues can enjoy participating in a competitive sport. In addition, we love that we are offering rowing to the Cazenovia community. Communities that are rich in exciting and

Snap-Ed creates a wellness culture

I

t goes without saying that since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in March of 2020, inperson programs have been and sometimes continue to be very challenging. Nevertheless, our Madison County Snap-ed team has made their presence known within the County and especially at Edward R. Andrews Elementary. It was spring of 2017 when Peter Cribb, CATCH Global Foundation trainer, traveled from Texas to deliver a training for school classroom teachers, food service, support staff and administrators that has resulted in a whole new wellness culture at Edward R. Andrews. Fortunately, even during the pandemic SNAP-Ed was unstoppable! Now, with approved virtual education we can visit your classroom anytime any day. Nutrition Educator Neisa Pantalia has been providing 20–25-minute videos once a month to Edward R Andrews. The lessons provided are from CATCH, which is a Coordinated Approach to Child Health. CATCH has one main goal to pursue a healthy environment for children through activity and healthy eating. Beyond the MyPlate CATCH categorizes food into three sections called Go, Slow & Whoa and uses the traffic light to do so. Go foods are green and the healthiest, they need to be chosen most often, slow foods are yellow and may have some added fat, sugar, or salt so we need to slow down on them, and whoa foods are red and considered treat foods because they have lots of fat, sugar or salt added, and should be eaten once and awhile. An apple is a go food, but sometimes we add a little sugar when we make into apple sauce making it a slow food, and then I can turn it into a whoa food by making it into apple

pie. No foods are eliminated or should never be eaten, just recognizing what foods we need most. Teachers can play the YouTube video link when it’s convenient for them. Lessons are interactive with pausing and cues for students. Games and student responses make this fun and simple for teachers. Virtual education has provided an effective and innovative solution to time management and the demanding roles of teachers. Here’s the link to a video that students, teachers, support staff and administrators put together to kick off the CATCH program for 2022: cornell. app.box.com/file/905291181745. Snap-Ed Nutrition educators are ready to create a whole new wellness culture in schools throughout Madison County in the upcoming 2022-2023 school year. Our educators are fully trained to implement the CATCH training within the school setting, and it is completely free. CATCH stands for coordinated approach to children’s health which is based on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health Model. In this model there are eight components that work interactively to educate young people about and provide support for a healthy lifestyle. The eight components are health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling and psychological services, healthy school environment, health promotion for staff, and family/community involvement. The CATCH program provides in depth materials for classroom teachers, child nutrition services staff members, physical educators, and families. All the materials were designed to complement and integrate with one another, when implemented, the entire school environment is affected. The CATCH training workshops are fun, dynamic, and multi-dimen-

sional clinics designed to provide the knowledge, skills, and tools to successfully implement and support the CATCH program. Establishing a process that “sets everyone up to succeed” is the key and training does just that.

Screening of ‘Utica: The Last Refuge’ set Nearly 30 million people worldwide are seeking refuge. Many of them were once prosperous and comfortable like you and me. Many others had little to leave behind but left what little they had. Nearly all were driven from their homes by war or famine or persecution or natural disasters. It’s a massive, overwhelming problem and so difficult many of us just turn away in frustration. But not everybody. Cazenovia Welcomes Refugees (CWR), an organization founded in 2016, has as its mission “to support Cazenovia as a welcoming community to refugees.” CWR’s first resettled family has been here for four years. A second family will be moving this June into a village home that was made available by Cazenovia College and that has been renovated by CWR. To highlight the solutions possible to the refugee issue, CWR and the Cazenovia Forum will present a screening of the film “Utica: The Last Refuge” Friday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the Catherine Cummings Theater, 16 Lincklaen St. The event is free and open to the public.

Produced by veteran journalist and Utica native David Chanatry, the film tells the story of how refugees’ presence in Utica has led to a cultural and economic revitalization of the community. It tells the stories of individual refugees and talks to experts who have compiled data that help explain a city that defies the conventional wisdom regarding refugees. Among the refugees’ stories are those of a Bosnian hairdresser who started the first female-, refugee-owned business in the area; a Burmese grocer; a Bosnian with a thriving construction business; and a Burmese nurse practitioner. At the same time, the film follows the efforts of the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees (MVRCR) as the agency responds to constant changes in policy produced by executive orders and court rulings. The film also talks to local politicians who extol the virtues of diversity in Utica and comment upon the hard work and dedication of the refugees. Local companies now work with MVRCR when they need employees and look optimistically on refugees as

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is usually a festive time in many communities. Usually seen as an unofficial start to summer, many gather for parades and to listen to guest speakers and host parties and cookouts. In recent years these celebrations have been disrupted due to concerns associated with COVID-19. But as Memorial Day approaches many of the traditional celebrations are preparing to honor and celebrate the day and the people it recognizes with many of traditional activities we have come to anticipate. While it is great to gather with friends and family and celebrate the day, Memorial Day and its true meaning are something well worth remembering and well worth putting a greater focus on and sharing with friends and family as we prepare to honor this special day. The parades, the gatherings, the cookouts, the long weekend are all things we can share in and enjoy, but taking the time to consider the tradition, the history and the countless people this day represents is incredibly important. While the short answer is that Memorial Day is about honoring those who gave their lives serving their country, there is a great deal of history behind this day and it is a day that reminds us that remembering those who served deserve our respect regardless of the date. Memorial Day goes back to what was known as Decoration Day starting in 1868 following the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. While this move created the three day weekend so many have come to associate with Memorial Day, locally many organizations from municipal governments to VFWs have worked to maintain a sense of the true meaning behind the day. There will be ceremonies honoring those who served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice as wreaths will be laid at memorials. There will be guest speakers who will share their experiences and insights as veterans, people who have served and people who understand the sacrifice others made and there will be time to reflect on what this means and how much those who served and sacrificed have meant to this country. We hope that everyone, whether they are attending a community celebration or hosting their own private gathering with friends and family, will keep the true meaning of Memorial Day in mind in their own way. Whether it is with a moment of reflection or silence or sharing stories of loved ones who served and sacrificed, this is a day for honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It may be his Italian heritage that kept him connected. As you drive along the Autopista in Italy you will see acres and acres of small gardens, cultivated by city dwellers. Even the most sophisticated urbanites retain the need to be close to the earth. My English grandmother, too, retained that connection, knowing the signs of when to plant and when to harvest. She knew that taking us for walks along country lanes and pointing out the different kinds of plants as we ambled by was an important part of our educations. When we stayed with her, we were outdoors most of the time, playing in the woods and along the stream that ran next to the unpaved lane behind her house. I know that I am a different person when I am in my garden. When I walk through the beauty of the woods. When I am picking berries to make jam. When I stand outside in the sunlight and watch the life all around me, the birds, the insects, the flowers, the trees … all living purposeful lives connected to the earth and each other. There is a growing knowledge that being in nature is

important for healthy children and adults. The premise of “The Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv tells us that we are separating ourselves from the very thing that created who and what we are. Our bodies and minds are the creation of life in nature, not changed by inventions, often stressed by the need for our ancient home. Japanese physicians prescribe time in woodlands as a doctor here would prescribe medicine. While the stresses of our modern world’s digital devices are often the biggest barrier to our being attentive to that which surrounds us, we can turn them off, or at least put them to sleep while we explore outside. From “The Last Child in the Woods” there are these words: “In our bones we need the natural curves of hills, the scent of chapparal, the whisper of pines, the possibility of wildness. We require these patches of nature for our mental health and our spiritual resilience.” I’ve got my outside shoes on, weeder in hand … I am out. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Broken democracy

To the editor: Our democracy is broken. While there are lots of ideas about how to improve politics and elections, one idea that doesn’t get a lot of attention is changing the way we vote. Being able to vote for only one candidate in an election because of our chooseone voting method can cause lots of problems, including candidates winning without support from most voters. That’s why I think we should bring choose-multiple voting methods to the towns and villages of Madison County. Approval and STAR voting are the top choose-multiple voting methods. Approval voting is an alternative voting method that allows voters to vote for all the candidates they approve of, and the candidate with the most votes wins. This simple reform incurs minimal cost to taxpayers and would improve elections by eliminating vote splitting and the spoiler effect, allowing voters to always vote for their favorite candidate without throwing away their vote. STAR allows voters to score all candidates to find the best two finalists, and then the majority preferred finalist wins. I believe that implementing choose-multiple voting in our local elections would greatly benefit our residents. A greater diversity of candidates and ideas would have a platform, and winning candidates would be more likely to receive broad support from the electorate. Negative campaigning would go down, as choose-multiple mitigates the “us-versus-them” dynamic of our current system. Voters would be able to support all the candidates they believe in, rather than being forced to choose just one. Let’s take a step toward a better, healthier democracy. Let’s take a step toward better representation for voters. Let’s take a step toward freer and better voting. Matthew Kouba Jr. Cazenovia

Just what we need

To the editor: Just what we need, another traffic blocker in the village. I wonder if any of the planning folks took a trip down the road to DeWitt where Starbucks opened in a ancillary building in the former Kmart parking lot. Ten or fifteen minutes there would preview what conditions will prevail when the drive though opens. Last week, I pulled into the lot to make my way from Erie Blvd East to the Lenscrafters location. The car in front of me turned in also. He came to an abrupt stop immediately after entering the lot. I was forced to stop half in and half out on the boulevard. The car behind me stopped in the driving lane of Erie, like wise the car behind. So car A just sat there happily waiting in the Starbucks drive through line, oblivious to three and maybe more cars at a dead stop waiting to have a domino effect set of rear-ender collisions on Erie Blvd. This same pattern of behavior will back up traffic headed toward Lyndon from the village, not to mention the caffeine cravers waiting to make a left hand turn hoping to join the Starbucks cue. Except it’s worse because of the gotta have my coffee folks coming from Lyndon and wanting to make a left turn into the maelstrom. This will probably block traffic coming from Fville on FM Rd. Throw in some school buses, and you will need to get a cup from Cafe Kubal before getting in the Starbucks line. I guess the powers that be are different from the ones who sensibly looked at similar blockage when Dunkin Doughnuts drive through application was blocked as a potential traffic hazard when they opened. Hope everyone’s collision insurance is paid up, and your patience level is at max. Good luck folks, stay alert, pay attention, and check your brakes. Greg Gonya Manlius

Keep our curbs

To the editor: I live in a small neighborhood in the town of Cazenovia known as the Jephson Estate or Hillcrest. This is a historical place known for its hundred year old maples and original structures once owned by the creator of the Dixie Baking Powder Company. Our town leaders have embarked on a plan to replace our road and drainage system. This project affects only seven or eight properties just outside the village line. Whereas we unanimously agree the drainage needs to be replaced, we do not agree that we should lose our curbs. Our town supervisor has instructed us that if we want them replaced, then we have to pay for them ourselves. This change, if approved, will lead to the commonly seen “Muddy mess” that can be seen along many rural roads. Our roadside does not look like this now and we would like the curbs to be there when construction is completed. There are an enormous amount of residents in the area that walk, bike and run through our neighborhood that understand how beautiful this area looks. This will all be different if the town gets its way. We believe that the town has the responsibility to put our road frontage back to its original condition. Rob Arnold Cazenovia

Thanks for your support

To the editor: I am writing this morning to thank the many people in our community who supported my recent campaign for the FM Board of Education. Many friends and friends of friends agreed to have lawn signs. The FMTA saw fit to endorse us based on our survey Letters l Page 7

A Card To The Public – Again are we called upon to assemble to perform the sacred duty of paying homage to the memory of our departed comrades. This day is held in deep reverence by the Grand Army of the Republic and is a day that is becoming more and more hallowed to us each year. There are more graves to strew with flowers and very few left to perform this duty and so we turn to you, to ask you to unite with us in the observance of this day. To that end we invite all citizens, churches, schools, soldiers and sailors of the World war and all organizations and societies to join with us in honoring the memory of our brave and our beloved. Walter Brown has purchased from Mrs. Lester Hendrix what is known as the J.A. Loyster residence on upper Lincklaen street. The purchase also includes the barn and about three acres of land. Mr. Brown expects to move there within a few weeks. The Loyster tract consists of about 18 or 19 acres. Harold Britt has purchased about three acres fronting on Lincklaen Street, and Otto Schlecht about five acres also fronting on Lincklaen Street. Both plan to build houses. Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Sunderman have purchased about three acres fronting on Corwin Street where Mr. Sunderman expects to build a shop.

Cazenovia’s Fourth of July celebration should reach a new high this year. According to Einar Hansen, member of the committee planning the activities, the 101st Airborne Division training at Camp Drum will send a helicopter squadron of paratroopers to jump from the sky over Cazenovia. All that’s needed, Mr. Hansen said, is a clear field 1,200 by 1,800 years for the parachuters and the helicopters. Anyone who owns such an area should call Mr. Hansen. After landing, the paratroopers will march in the parade.

Reaction to last week’s sale of the Lincklaen House to a partnership consisting of Cazenovia College and Cazenovia residents Dan Kuper and Charles Morgan is being seen as positive throughout the community. “I think it’s terrific,” Cazenovia Town Supervisor Pay Costello said “It’s a plus all around. I just can’t say enough about it.” Costello said he believes the Lincklaen House will help bring additional people and tourists into the area which will help the community. “I think it’s great,” said Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce Chair Frank Gallucci. Gallucci said the Lincklaen House will help bring visitors and their money in for events. It will be a key to the business area, he said.

The monsters are not shunned or forgotten, as they should. They are elevated, their methods laid out for others of a similar evil mindset to copy and mimic. Next thing you know, another place of quiet, in another innocent city, is upended and changed forever. About the only saving grace from what happened in that Tops on Jefferson Street is seeing how the Buffalo community, individuals and businesses and civic institutions like the Bills and Sabres, have gone all-in pledging to help in any way they can, further proving the point that “City of Good Neighbors” is quite accurate. But it shouldn’t take mass tragedy to do this, or to expose the sad fact that Buffalo’s East Side lacked any real grocerystore options beyond that Tops and shouldn’t turn into a “food desert”. We’ve spent way too long setting aside the root issues that have caused this repeated cycle of horrible violence, all done by Whites, all aimed at non-Whites. And we can’t wait for ineffective governments to address it. All of us, as citizens, have an obligation to call out, expose and drive out the hatemongers whose malicious behavior guarantees that more shootings, and more heartbreaks, are around the corner. no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.” It means Rowe vs. Wade was “wrong from the start” and “must be erased from the Court’s legal memory.” While affirming this, I offer my further reasoning as to why Roe vs. Wade was “wrong from the start.” Our founders brilliantly offered the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution that made us the strongest nation in the world. The Declaration clearly stated that, “all men are created equal by their Creator.” And, the Constitution affirmed this when its preamble called for government to secure our God-given blessings of liberty. Both fully recognized that we are His creations. As such, it can never be mankind’s choice of when to end God’s created life. It is for this reason I disagree with Justice Alito’s further opinion that the abortion issue should be returned to the people’s elected representatives. No, the Supreme Court must settle this once and for all. Only this will keep us true to our Constitution, begin to heal our wounds, and help us return to the great nation we once were--an outstanding religious republic. Charles Mirucki Fayetteville

Clean up began right away, and a “GoFundMe” page was set up to help offset the costs of the damage. “Once we had the boats looked at, we learned that one of the eights was repairable,” recalled Holgate. “It was an expense, but compared to the cost of replacement, we were thrilled to be able to keep that eight, the ‘Doris Soladay’ from Syracuse University. In addition, we were able to retain two of the fours that we originally thought were lost, although one of them was an older boat that we never used anyway. Unfortunately, our best and favorite boats were the ones we lost.”

According to Holgate, the GoFundMe campaign raised approximately $3,000. Holgate noted that although some of the boats lost during the storm have been replaced, the club has decided to maintain a smaller fleet than it has in previous years. Currently, CRC is working on replacing the storage shed and reinforcing its boat racks. “The destruction definitely had a substantial impact on us, but we are remaining positive and moving forward,” said Holgate. Albert Einstein…on golf and life In the late 1930s Albert Einstein was invited to join the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton University in the U.S. The founder of the institute loved to play golf and invited Einstein to play with him. I never imagined that Einstein was ever a golfer. I was right. He never played the game. However, because he was fond of the founder, Louis Bamberger, who loved the game, he agreed to visit the Springdale Golf Club where lessons were arranged with a young, enthusiastic golf Pro. The rest of the story is told by Anne Cain, a golf instructor at Amelia Island Golf Club, in Florida where she found out about the lesson from Dr. Robert Lewis, an 84 year old member at Springdale who said he witnessed the lesson… The Pro decided that the first lesson would cover putting and chipping. It didn’t take long for the young Pro to realize that his celebrity pupil was not as skilled with his hands, as he was with his mind. Desperate to help, the Pro continued giving further instructions each time Einstein did not make contact with the ball. This, of course, caused him to become increasingly frustrated and confused. Finally, Einstein asked the young Pro to give him a few golf balls. Although the Pro was a bit puzzled, he gave him the balls. Einstein decided to throw all of the balls at his instructor and shouted, “catch”. The Pro gave it the old college try, but did not catch a single ball. Mr. Einstein paused for a moment, raised his finger and said, “Young nan, when I throw you one ball, you can catch it. When I throw you four balls, you catch nothing! So when you teach, make only one point at a time”. As Ms Cain concluded, the story provided “a simple but profound message, about teaching or learning any difficult task, including golf: Keep your thoughts simple and work on one key at a time”.

Rather become a man of value”. * “Any fool can know, the point is to understand”. * “I am thankful for all of those who said NO to me. It’s because of them I’m doing it myself ”. * “The value of achievement lies in the achieving”. * “Life is like riding a bicycle, you must keep moving”. * “Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution”. * “Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better”. * “The only thing more dangerous than ignorance is arrogance”. * “Fear or stupidity has always been the basis of most human actions”. * “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school”. And finally…”NEVER give up on what you want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts”. The Law of Realivity…it works every time. Thank you Mr. Einstein.

Caz girls lax takes 9-7 record to sectionals by Phil Blackwell

During this spring, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team has made slight, but noticeable improvements, most importantly turning its 7-9 record from 2021 around. Ultimately, the Lakers had a 9-7 record, and hoped that, when the Section III Class D playoff brackets were released, had an easier time of it than it did a year ago, when it was ousted by Westhill in the quarterfinals. But that might not have proven the case. With the no. 5 seed, Cazenovia would have to face no. 4 seed Marcellus in Tuesday’ s quarterfinal, the winner likely getting top seed South Jefferson in Thursday’s semifinal at Liverpool. Cazenovia had won five of six prior to last Monday’s regular-season finale at Skaneateles, where the reigning secLax l Page 17

tric buses, which cost four times the amount. . . I would love to go forward and push for EVs, but unfortunately, we are not there yet. It’s definitely a conversation we should start.” Mehlbaum proposed that a discussion of the district’s infrastructure needs be included on the agenda for the July facilities committee meeting. The committee will then report to the BOE during its next public meeting. Finnerty next informed the board that, at the suggestion of a taxpayer, he started looking into hybrid buses earlier that day. He explained that he reached out to the district’s transportation supervisor, who immediately reached out to the district’s bus providers, including New York Bus Sales and Leonard Bus Sales. According to Finnerty, Leonard Bus Sales responded, via email, to say that they do not have any hybrid buses available because the focus is now on electric buses. “You can’t even get hybrid buses now because of the state mandate to go to electric,” Finnerty said. “She did make the comment ‘If you were to plan infrastructure today, it would take you about two-plus years in order to complete it before you could place a bus in your fleet. Ordering the bus is the easy part.’” Superintendent Chris DiFulvio then announced that National Grid has already been contacted and is planning to work on an assessment of the district. In the meantime, DiFulvio has volunteered to serve on a committee with some OCM BOCES (Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services) superintendents to investigate electric buses/infrastructure further. He has also volunteered to be part of a statewide group related to electric buses.

hopes that many members of the Cazenovia community will wear their poppies throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Post 88 Memorial Service – Following the morning’s activities at 1:30 p.m., Post 88 will hold a brief memorial service at its Garden of Honor located in front of the Post 88 Post Home, 26 Chenango St. The service will honor veterans buried in any of the community’s cemeteries. The Garden of Honor includes bricks named to honor any individual with a Cazenovia connection who is serving or has served in any branch of the US military. Those honored include some who served as long ago as the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The public is invited to attend.

Later in the discussion, Finnerty clarified that he is in support of the transition to electric buses for the sake of the environment, and that his intention is simply to inform the board that there are going to be hurdles. He also announced that on May 25, he, the director of facilities, the director of transportation, and bus mechanics will be attending an event in East Syracuse where they will be able to see an electric bus and learn about the infrastructure needs. The board also discussed potentially electrifying other district-owned vehicles and contemplated whether the district will qualify for funding to help with the transition to electric buses. “I’ll keep you informed, and we will make informed decisions,” said Finnerty. “That’s what we do.” Finnerty later commented that based on the district’s “2030 And Beyond” long-range facilities plan, the next planned project is a bus garage. “Timeline-wise, we would be looking at a vote to approve that project a year from December, so December of 2023,” he said. “The timing really couldn’t be better for us as far as we might have enough information at that point to be planning infrastructure for electric buses, etcetera.” At this point, Finnerty stated, the district can afford about a $5.5 million project tax neutral. “But that was pre-electric bus infrastructure, so it will be interesting,” he said. “But the timing is good, I think.” CCSD BOE meetings are usually held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. Meeting dates are listed on the district website and the school calendar. For more information, visit cazenoviacsd.com/board-of-education.

Cazenovia baseball set for Class B playoff push by Phil Blackwell

Despite a fair amount of ups and downs, the Cazenovia baseball team had mostly done well in the latter stages of the regular season and could prove dangerous for any Section III Class B playoff opponent. More evidence of the Lakers’ quality was on display in last Tuesday’s 10-0 shutout of Hannibal, where it scored three times in the fourth inning, four times in the sixth and got on the board in ever inning except the second. Off a poor outing against Westhill May 11,

Jack Donlin threw a two-hit, complete-game gem here, striking out seven while also getting two hits at the plate and adding an RBI. Jack Byrnes was three-for-four as he and A.J. Rothfeld both drove in a pair of runs. Single RBIs also went to Taven Reilley and Logan Nowak as Reilley, Rothfeld, Sully Clarke and Jacob Grevelding had two hits apiece. When it was Byrnes’ turn to pitch against Bishop Grimes a day later, the Lakers rolled again, topping the Cobras 8-1 for its seventh win in eight games. Runs in five of the first six innings helped

Byrnes, who limited the Cobras to five hits and recorded nine strikeouts (giving him 81 for the season) to overcome issuing five walks. Byrnes also got two hits at the plate, equaling Donlin, Reilley and Clarke as Donlin and Reilley each contributed a pair of RBIs and Byrnes scored twice. Seeking another big win Friday against another playoff-bound team, Solvay, the Lakers almost attained it, only to take a 6-5 defeat to the Bearcats. Cazenovia trailed, 1-0, when it nearly batted around in the top of the third, netting four
