North Syracuse Family Fest returns this Saturday By Ashley M. Casey Associate Editor After being sidelined by COVID for two years, the North Syracuse Family Festival is back and is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a new location: Centerville Place, near the North Syracuse Community Center. “If we’re going to make changes, now’s the time to try them,” said Tony Burkinshaw, director of parks and recreation for the village of North Syracuse. Centerville Place — a small cutthrough street between South Bay Road and Main Street — seemed like the logical choice for relocation. Previously, the festival took place at Lonergan Park and even spent a couple of years at The Gathering Place “Centerville Place is in the heart of the village. We’re trying to promote more walkability for village residents,” Burkinshaw. Accessible parking will be available for those with disabilities, but residents are encouraged to use the network of sidewalks in the village. Over the last several years, North Syracuse has made many improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. Burkinshaw said he hopes the festival will generate foot traffic for local businesses as well. “We’re going to provide picnic tables for people to sit and get off their feet,” he added. Festivalgoers will be able to browse wares from more than 30 vendors and feast on offerings from five food vendors. The festival also will feature raffles, door prizes, a classic car show and live music by

Just Joe. “His style of music and his variety of music will hit pretty much everybody we’re trying to target,” Burkinshaw said. While admission to the festival remains free, a $5 wristband for the little ones will grant access to

the kids’ zone. Wristbands include a snow cone, a turn in the bounce house, caricatures and face painting. Families with five or more members pay a maximum of $15. If all goes well at Centerville Place this weekend, the village could host other events there in the future,

Burkinshaw said. The North Syracuse Family Festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at Centerville Place. For more information, visit facebook.com/NorthSyracuseFamilyFestival.

Whether through times of humanitarian or political crisis, civil unrest or even the personal crises that affect all of us, libraries can be places of comfort, safety, reconciliation, and hope.’ “You can count on the daily commitment of our staff and trustees to provide the services and materials to help all our users manage their way,” Wisniewski said. Also on May 17, Yvette Hewitt, Mary Schapley and Dennis McLaughlin were reelected to five-year terms to the LPL Board of Trustees. They’ll be sworn in for the new term at the July meeting. The trustees and Wis-

niewski’s management team worked for months, with long discussions about the state of the economy, before setting and approving the 2022-23 budget with a 2.49% tax impact. Find details of the budget at LPL.org/budget. Mark your calendars. Staff members are well on the way to making this a summer to remember for the Liverpool community. The kickoff for this year’s Let’s Read, Liverpool! Oceans of Possibility comes with two sessions of fun, activities and registration for the children’s, teen and adult reading clubs. During the pandemic, New York State changed regulations which previously allowed local courts to suspend the driver’s licenses of defendants who failed to pay their fines. “The state has disarmed our courts’ enforcement mechanism,” according to Liverpool Village Justice Anthony LaValle. “On top of this the state now requires that we lift past suspensions placed on a driver’s license for their failure to pay fines, once they simply appear in court.” As a result, the judge said, “New York State emboldened defendants to not pay their fines and surcharges, knowing there are no consequences for their failure to pay.” LaValle estimates that unpaid fines here total at least $160,000, but he and his staff have devised a plan to collect it. At the May 16 meeting of the Village of Liverpool Board of Trustees, the board unanimously approved LaValle’s request to increase the hours of his deputy court clerk, Lynda Kianka, so she can devote some serious time and effort to assemble the paperwork to convert hundreds of unpaid fines to civil judgments. “We’ll file the judgments with the county clerk’s office and sooner or later the judgment debtors will apply for a credit card, loan or inherit funds by estate, or perhaps hit the lottery, and the debt will have to be paid, plus interest,” the judge stated in a letter he sent to the trustees. The board — Mayor Gary White and trustees Matt Devendorf, Christina Fadden, Dennis Hebert and Michael LaMontagne — increased Kianka’s hours to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. four days each week. Kianka works alongside Court Clerk Kristen Marshall, who will also contribute to the project. LaValle hopes to continue that work schedule each month until all the unpaid fines can be fully processed.

History Mystery North

Do you know anything about this picture? By Dorothy Heller Town of Clay Historian

Question: These drawings obviously depict barrels, but do you know which local industries used them? What were these barrels famous for preserving? Last week’s answer: Pictured is the District 4 Euclid Union Free School. History of the various school sites in this district is somewhat confusing. Records show that the first school was erected at Clay Corners (now Euclid) in 1808. Maps of 1860 and 1870 show School No. 17 on the north side of Route 3 about a quarter mile west of Morgan Road. There is no sign of it now. This may have been the first school but the number 17 has always been associated with Baker School. Before 1879, School No. 4 was on Morgan Road. north of Route 31. Mr. and Mrs. Don Johnson lived there in 1976. In April 1879, plans were made for a new building, which was built soon after on Morgan Road just south of Route 31. There were two stories with a classroom on each floor. It was

torn down in the 1960s and there is a record that for awhile after some building was abandoned, school was held in the Methodist parsonage. However, it is not certain which building it could have been. Among the teachers were Cliff Larkin, Elsie Sager Ladd, Mae Martin, Cecile Hamlin, Alfred Strever and Earl Asselstine. In 1885, these names were mentioned: Waterbury, Soule, Abbot, Ware, Moyer, Strever, Wheeler, Hewes, Blakeman, Gulrett, DeLong, Young, Palmer, VerPlanck, Smith, Brown, Wetzel, Peacock and Shaver. The upstairs class in 1902, taught by Cliff Larkin, included: Floyd Lynn, Scott Sitterly, Floyd Dence, Lucy Graves, Gladys Brown, Lena Harke, Bessie Hamlin, Edith Soule, Clara History l Page 14

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is usually a festive time in many communities. Usually seen as an unofficial start to summer, many gather for parades and to listen to guest speakers and host parties and cookouts. In recent years these celebrations have been disrupted due to concerns associated with COVID-19. But as Memorial Day approaches many of the traditional celebrations are preparing to honor and celebrate the day and the people it recognizes with many of traditional activities we have come to anticipate. While it is great to gather with friends and family and celebrate the day, Memorial Day and its true meaning are something well worth remembering and well worth putting a greater focus on and sharing with friends and family as we prepare to honor this special day. The parades, the gatherings, the cookouts, the long weekend are all things we can share in and enjoy, but taking the time to consider the tradition, the history and the countless people this day represents is incredibly important. While the short answer is that Memorial Day is about honoring those who gave their lives serving their country, there is a great deal of history behind this day and it is a day that reminds us that remembering those who served deserve our respect regardless of the date. Memorial Day goes back to what was known as Decoration Day starting in 1868 following the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. While this move created the three day weekend so many have come to associate with Memorial Day, locally many organizations from municipal governments to VFWs have worked to maintain a sense of the true meaning behind the day. There will be ceremonies honoring those who served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice as wreaths will be laid at memorials. There will be guest speakers who will share their experiences and insights as veterans, people who have served and people who understand the sacrifice others made and there will be time to reflect on what this means and how much those who served and sacrificed have meant to this country. We hope that everyone, whether they are attending a community celebration or hosting their own private gathering with friends and family, will keep the true meaning of Memorial Day in mind in their own way. Whether it is with a moment of reflection or silence or sharing stories of loved ones who served and sacrificed, this is a day for honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

She knew that taking us for walks along country lanes and pointing out the different kinds of plants as we ambled by was an important part of our educations. When we stayed with her, we were outdoors most of the time, playing in the woods and along the stream that ran next to the unpaved lane behind her house. I know that I am a different person when I am in my garden. When I walk through the beauty of the woods. When I am picking berries to make jam. When I stand outside in the sunlight and watch the life all around me, the birds, the insects, the flowers, the trees … all living purposeful lives connected to the earth and each other. There is a growing knowl-

edge that being in nature is important for healthy children and adults. The premise of “The Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv tells us that we are separating ourselves from the very thing that created who and what we are. Our bodies and minds are the creation of life in nature, not changed by inventions, often stressed by the need for our ancient home. Japanese physicians prescribe time in woodlands as a doctor here would prescribe medicine. While the stresses of our modern world’s digital devices are often the biggest barrier to our being attentive to that which surrounds us, we can turn them off, or at least put them to sleep while we explore outside. From “The Last Child in the Woods” there are these words: “In our bones we need the natural curves of hills, the scent of chapparal, the whisper of pines, the possibility of wildness. We require these patches of nature for our mental health and our spiritual resilience.” I’ve got my outside shoes on, weeder in hand … I am out. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Decoration Day help needed

Liverpool American Legion Post 188 is seeking volunteers to place flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. To help, please meet at the Liverpool Cemetery at 9 a.m. Saturday May 28. “Support from the Liverpool community will enable our veterans’ graves to be honorably recognized,” said Post 188 Commander Ken Palmer. If you can be there Saturday morning, call Ken at 315-4519544.

Shooting deaths on the rise

Given the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded in Buffalo May 14, maybe it’s time for us to reflect on our troubled nation’s unsettling increase in shooting deaths. A deranged racist teenager from Broome County shot and killed 10 mostly Black individuals at a Tops supermarket that day on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo. Among the dead was 32-year-old Cicero native

Roberta Drury, who was in the Queen City caring for her convalescent brother. The New York Times and National Public Radio have recently reported that the country’s firearm homicide rate surged 35 percent from 2019 to 2020, hitting its highest level since 1994, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The nationwide gun homicide rate was 6.1 per 100,000 Americans, up from 4.6, while the firearm suicide rate increased slightly from 7.9 to 8.1 per 100,000 people. Amid the heightened stress of the pandemic and its economic fallout, some communities were hit notably harder: Counties with the highest poverty level saw dramatically higher rates, while the largest increases were seen among young black and indigenous men.

Last word

“No matter what she went through. She was full of life, caring and happy. She cared about everyone.” –Krystal Pino, neighbor of the late Roberta Drury.

Local Lions Club helps kids play safely in the shade

To the editor: Recently there was a story about the Play Safely in the Shade campaign at the North Syracuse Early Education Program. Our PTO had done a tremendous fundraiser to help reach our goal as we near the end of this fundraising campaign. But providing the original seed money, with a very generous donation of $10,000 was the North

Syracuse-Liverpool Lion’s Club. They immediately saw the need and benefit of ensuring that young kids with special needs and their caregivers are protected from the hot sun while playing and learning. They visited with us in our new play area one beautiful morning last June and presented us with the first, very special donation towards our dream of healthy shade. This local Lions Club began in March of 1956 and has been supporting those with visual impairments and other challenges in our community ever since.

CNY’s Community News Source

Last month I mentioned the importance of each person doing things like Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. But also that it is important for us to let our voices be heard at the corporate and government level. How do we do that? Sign petitions that come your way via 350.org or Sierra Club or any number of environmental organizations. Sign letters to corporate leaders and to congressman. Establish an environmental advisory committee to your town or village board. Run for local government office on an environmental platform. Since global warming and climate change are at tipping points now, it is imperative that we act not only locally, but globally. Fortunately governments and corporations are beginning to talk about the need to pay attention to their climate footprint. However, their actual movement on environmental issues is quite minimal. There seem to be supportive words but not substantive action. The reality of that inertia is unfortunately related to the almighty concern of the bottom line - the dollar. So a way forward to lean into environmental action is to remove our dollars from being invested by these companies in dirty and ill chosen technologies. The divestment movement is gathering momentum and having a positive impact on our environmental choices. You can join that movement by finding out where your money is invested and redirecting those funds into organization that care about environmental, social, and governance issues. ESG companies are producing as good and better returns than companies that invest in fossil fuels and other climate destroying technologies. Some places to find out how to divest and move your money into money making opportunities that are also sustainable and pass the ESG criteria are: Hansen’s Advisory Services in Central New York at hansensadvisory.com. Also Rivers and Mountains GreenFaith Circle provides a service to walk you through the process of divestment. They will be providing a workshop next fall from St. James’ Church, Skaneateles and on Zoom. Visit rivers-mountains-greenfaith.org/divestmentfossil-fuel. And think about where your gift money goes. Do you donate to your alma mater? Ask where they invest their money. If it is not in ESG companies, suggest to them that you would like to see a more environmentally responsible balance sheet before you give them more funds. Individual investors do nave a choice. We can make our voices heard in the marketplace. We vote with our pocket book. Buy from socially and environmentally responsible organizations and invest with socially and environmentally responsible institutions. God’s green earth will thank you.

the killers, their backgrounds, their motives, when in essence it’s the same thing over and over – manifestos of hatred, lots of guns and ammunition, then death. The monsters are not shunned or forgotten, as they should. They are elevated, their methods laid out for others of a similar evil mindset to copy and mimic. Next thing you know, another place of quiet, in another innocent city, is upended and changed forever. About the only saving grace from what happened in that Tops on Jefferson Street is seeing how the Buffalo community, individuals and businesses and civic institutions like the Bills and Sabres, have gone all-in pledging to help in any way they can, further proving the point that “City of Good Neighbors” is quite accurate. But it shouldn’t take mass tragedy to do this, or to expose the sad fact that Buffalo’s East Side lacked any real grocerystore options beyond that Tops and shouldn’t turn into a “food desert”. We’ve spent way too long setting aside the root issues that have caused this repeated cycle of horrible violence, all done by Whites, all aimed at non-Whites. And we can’t wait for ineffective governments to address it. All of us, as citizens, have an obligation to call out, expose and drive out the hatemongers whose malicious behavior guarantees that more shootings, and more heartbreaks, are around the corner. Buffalo will come back. If only we remember.

CNY SPCA pet of the week

Igor wants to be your lovely assistant

Submitted by Donna Newman

In 2013, Igor the kitten came to the shelter as a stray. He was adopted a few weeks later and happily spent the next several years as a beloved pet. Unfortunately, Igor came back to the shelter a few months ago when his family was no longer able to care for him. At 9 years old, Igor is considered a senior. He’s been well-loved and (at 17 pounds) well-fed. He gets along well with other cats and is a staff favorite. He’s mellow, but he’s not above enjoying a catnip buzz! He’s just a really nice cat. If you’d like to give a deserving cat a second chance at a happy home, Igor’s the guy for you! For more information about adoption, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

SKARTS announces funding for 2022 TheSkaneatelesAreaArtsCouncil(SKARTS) announced funding for its 2022 grant awards for art and cultural activities. Grants are awarded to groups and individuals within a 15-mile radius of the village of Skaneateles. Applications are located at the SKARTS website grants page: art4skarts.org/grant-application.The deadline for submission is May 31, 2022. All artists, arts organizations, choral groups, museums, schools, theaters and other not-forprofit organizations committed to the arts are encouraged to apply. Multiple grants are issued with a maximum of $1,000 per grant. Not all applicants are awarded grants. Grant winners are identified at SKARTS’ sole discretion through their judging process. AccordingtoLaurelMoranz,SKARTSpresident, “Thanks to our many donors’ generosity, the SKARTS board was able to approve funds for the 2022 grant program. We are so grateful that the community stepped up to help our grants funding even though we were unable to hold our fund-raising art show due to the pandemic.” Moranz also noted, “I’m happy to report that in 2022, Art4Skarts, our annual fund-raiser and juried art show, will return. This exciting event will showcase the work of dozens of local artists. The opening reception will be on Thurs-

day, Sept. 15 and the art show will continue to September 24 during the Cayuga Museum’s normal hours. We are asking all our friends and supporters to save the dates.” Since 2006, SKARTS has issued over 130 grants, contributing to the pursuit of artistic and cultural endeavors in the area. The 13 grantees for 2021 represented grant winning projects that ranged widely from purchases of art supplies and programs to sponsorship of on-line musical performances or organizations and educational opportunities. The SKARTS 2021 grantees included Auburn Public Theater, John D. Barrow Art Gallery, E. John Gavras Center, Genesee Elementary School, MasterWorks Chorale, Montessori School of The Finger Lakes, Schweinfurth Art Center, Skaneateles Area Chamber of CommerceFoundation,SkaneatelesHistoricalSociety, Skaneateles Library Association, Skaneateles Middle School, The Rev Theatre Company (formerly Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Inc.), and Victoria Fitzgerald Art. Following are excerpts from an unknown pupil of Euclid school given for the “Welcome to Clay book.” At the turn of the century (1900), it could have been any school district. “The country schoolhouse was a two story building, painted white with a bell on the roof. The schoolyard was about an acre in size with the building at the west end of the lot and two little buildings at the rear, one for boys and one

for girls, separated by a high board fence. A tributary of Mud Creek ran along the north side, over which was a narrow plank bridge. “The first floor of the building was for the younger children and the second floor for the older ones. As we entered, there were separate cloakrooms for boys and girls. Then came a large study and recreation room with a potbellied stove in the middle. Unusually large windows were along the north and south sides of the room. There were no windows on the west but along the entire length was a blackboard. The teacher’s desk was a few feet in front of the blackboard and faced the pupils. It was while the

Each Arbor Day, the school planted a maple tree and although the building has been demolished and the bell placed with the Onondaga Historical Association, all the trees still remained as of 1976. Skating was a great pastime for all ages and with Mud only a stone’s throw away from the schoolhouse, it was great fun to do speed and figure skating. Night skating parties were frequent with bonfires and cider. Nearly all who attended school walked to and from the schoolhouse regardless of the weather during the fall, winter and spring seasons — in spite of the conditions of the country roads. It was not uncommon for some pupils to walk through mud, snow or rain for a distance of two miles or more. teacher was using the blackboard with her back to the pupils that the paper wads began to fly. “Along with teaching, it became the duty of the teacher with help from the pupils to keep the stove in operation. Drinking water was secured from the town pump located in front of the hotel, about 2,000 feet from the school building. The drinking facilities consisted of a 10-quart pail and a small tin dipper from which everyone drank with no ill effects. During recess and lunch hour, if the weather was good, the boys played leapfrog or baseball. We made our own baseballs and bats because no family could afford to purchase them. The girls played blind man’s bluff, ring-around the rosey, drop the handkerchief and jump the rope. In the wintertime, we played fox and geese, and the deeper the snow, the greater the fun. In case of rain, tic-tac-toe was played inside or we tested each other in spelling or arithmetic. “Discipline was never a serious problem in our country school. A three-foot rubber strap, two inches wide, always hung on a hook on the side of the teacher’s desk and was used whenever the occasion warranted.”

C-NS baseball charges into Class AA playoffs by Phil Blackwell

No one in area Class AA baseball has played as well as Cicero-North Syracuse in the 2022 regular season. Whether it would carry over into the Section III playoffs remained to be seen. As the top seed and SCAC Metro division regular-season champions, the Northstars have won several close games against its nearest rivals and had a clean sweep of Liverpool, too. When the Northstars faced West Genesee last Tuesday, it again proved a tight one – and again it went in C-NS’s favor as it held off the Wildcats 2-1. A first-inning run by the Northstars held up for a while as the game’s only tally, Casey Gunnip going 5 2/3 innings and limting WG to three hits and three walks. Wyatt Braun, pitching for the Wildcats, was also tough, and kept it 1-0 until a C-NS run in

the top of the seventh. That proved important when, in the bottom of the seventh, Eric Korzeniewski’s single drove home Aidan Leaf, but relief pitcher Battista Wood was able to pick up the final out. C-NS’s ability to play well in close games was on display again a night later at the Gillette Road complex, where the Northstars used a late run to defeat Baldwinsville 3-2. Having topped the Bees 1-0 and 5-1 the previous two times they had met, this third encounter saw Sam Shaw get staked to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, only to have B’ville tie it in the top of the fourth, the key blow Reid Rachwal’s double. Shaw lasted until the sixth, striking out eight and allowing six hits, when Wood relieved him. Then C-NS got to Bees pitcher Aiden Milburn in the bottom of the sixth for the go-ahead run before Wood recorded the final three outs.

Three different players – Corey Cartier, Nick Klamm and Lucas Crystal – drove in the Northstars’ runs, with Mike Rockwell earning a pair of hits. Crystal, Carter King and Grayson Giddings scored the runs. When Liverpool took on Baldwinsville last Tuesday, it was another close contest, but the Warriors lost, 5-3. Liverpool took early leads of 1-0 and 3-2 as Charles Anthony got a pair of hits and scored a run, with Chris Baker adding an RBI. But the Bees used three runs in the bottom of the fourth off Jack Hoppe to go in front. Adam Blincoe pitched two scoreless innings of relief, but the Warriors could not answer against Gavin Miller or reliever Matt Carner. C-NS continued to tear through the homestretch Thursday, jumping all over Fayetteville-Manlius for six runs in the bottom of the first, all it would need in a 7-3 win over the Hornets.

Staked to all that run support, Zicaro went six innings and overcame seven hits and four walks to strike out seven. Jake Lukasiewicz doubled and got two RBIs, with Zicaro, Giddings, Klamm, King and Logan Karwowski also driving in runs. But when Liverpool faced F-M on Friday it lost, 9-5, to the Hornets, who bolted out to an 8-1 lead by the third inning. In defeat, the Warriors got two hits and two RBIs from Lance Phillips as Alex House and Nate Benjamin also drove in runs and Baker scored twice. At least on Saturday Liverpool closed strong, beating South Jefferson 9-2 as it batted around in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs to break a 2-2 tie. Tyler Vivacqua’s long home run provided a highlight as he went three-for-four. Anthony added a pair of hits as Alex Evans drove in two runs, with RBIs also going to Baker, Dylan Hograth and Gianni Toscano.

Liverpool softball shut out in rematch with B’ville by Phil Blackwell When questions about who stood atop Section III Class AA softball were asked, Liverpool could not point to a better record or to a better state ranking than its neighbors from Baldwinsville. However, the Warriors could note that, entering last week, it had given the Beees its lone defeat of the season in a lopsided

13-0 romp late in April and that it also had played a tougher schedule. But each of those talking points were quieted in last Wednesday’s rematch with B’ville at Ray Middle school where superb pitching from Taylor Tripodi and two rallies were all the Bees needed to prevail 5-0. Again facing Warriors pitching ace Cassie Wiggins, the Bees put two runners

C-NS girls lax beats Liverpool by Phil Blackwell

A year ago, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team got within inches of knocking out Cicero-North Syracuse two rounds before the Northstars earned the Section III Class A championship. Now the rivals are lined up again to meet again with a season on the line, playing Thursday in the sectional semifinal at East Syracuse Minoa Stadium with the winner to get to the May 31 final at SUNY-Cortland. It just so happened that Liverpool and C-NS would finish the regular season battling one another last Monday night at Bragman Stadium, and again the Northstars got the best of it, prevailing 11-8. They had first played on May 5 at LHS Stadium and C-NS had won by a comfortable 12-5 margin, and while the rematch was far closer, it still remained a constant chase. The Northstars jumped out in front 4-1 in the first 10 minutes, and maintained that distance the rest of the half until it went to the break sporting an 8-4 lead. At one point in the second half, the margin grew to five, 11-6, and while Liverpool did make up some of the ground, it could not put a sustained scoring run together. Brooke Molchanoff, with three goals and

one assist, led a deep Northstars attack. Mackenzie Prentice and Gabby Ciciarelli each scored twice, with single goals going to Shea Firth, Sophia Nesci, Tori Iannotti and Gabby Putman as Nesci and Iannotti also earned assists. Liverpool’s Maggie Tifft led both sides with four goals. Gianna Carbone converted twice, with Abby Geary and Grace Geary earning one goal apiece. The Warriors took as many shots, but Nicole Mirra put up eight saves. A day later, Liverpool played a close one against Class D power South Jefferson, who beat C-NS earlier this season. But the Warriors lost 12-10 to the Spartans, who had seven goals from Macy Shultz to overcome an effort that included Carbone, Abby Geary, Grace Geary and Mia Berthoff netting two goals apiece. Abby Geary added four assists as Tifft was held to a single goal, matching Lana Alampi. Just as with the girls, the C-NS and Liverpool boys would have a semifinal date with one another, meeting Tuesday night at Bragman Stadium to see who would return on Friday for the title game against Baldwinsville or Syracuse.

on base in the bottom of the first inning, only to have Bianca DeSellems hit into a double play started with a good snare from Julia Wike, who made three different strong defensive plays by game’s end. Meanwhile, Tripodi was amassing six strikeouts in her first three innings, and would get all the help she needed in the bottom of the third. Hadley Michaels reached base on an error. Two batters later, Grace Branshaw bunted and popped out, and Michaels was nearly doubled off first base, but the ball was dropped. This gave Nadzan a chance to hit - and the right-hander drilled a Wiggins pitch the opposite way, over the right-field fence for a two-run home run. Staked to that 2-0 lead, Tripodi did not allow a hit until the top of the sixth, when Brooke Tyler led off with a single. But Tyler was stranded when Tripodi recorded her ninth and 10th strikeouts of the game and induced Wike to fly out. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, the Bees clinched it with three runs. Nadzan reached on an infield hit, went to third on DeSellems’ bunt and scored on a grounder by Bella Hotchkiss. Ayla Fleming followed with an RBI single and Michaels added a run-scoring single. Cicero-North Syracuse showed further signs of emerging from its season-long struggles when it rallied from an early 3-0

deficit and defeated Fayetteville-Manlius 8-5 last Wednesday afternoon. A five-run second inning erased the Hornets’ early 3-1 advantage, and a pair of insurance runs in the fifth helped, too, as Danielle Filapello earned three hits at the plate, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs. Aubrey Coyle, Bella Julian and Sydney Nesci each scored twice, with Riley Barrett and Tahlia Gerardi getting RBIs and Lillian Hotaling pitching a complete game to earn the win. Then C-NS challenged Liverpool on Thursday, and this game far more resembled their past battles, the Warriors having to rally to beat the Northstars 3-2. Down 1-0 after one innings, C-NS went in front when McKayla Barnett connected on one of her two doubles and, along with Barrett, was able to score. Hotaling pitched well, allowing nine hits but never letting Liverpool get a big inning together. Still, single runs in the fifth and sixth got the Warriors in front, Gracie Zankowski getting three hits and scoring twice as Mackenzie Frani also had three hits and produced a pair of RBIs. Tristen LaForte drove in the other run. Then Liverpool beat F-M 7-4 on Saturday with two-hit outings from Wiggins, Frani, LaForte and Lauren Ragonese, LaForte’s pair of doubles led to two RBIs as Wiggins also drove in two runs and Zankowski scored twice.
